Among the Paleozoic plants, the Pennsylvania-aged collections are particularly significant, especially the Cannelton/Mansfield, Lacoe, and Oleksyshyn collections. Tertiary holdings include collections made by invertebrate and vertebrate paleontologists from localities previously unknown to paleobotanists and the excellent and large collections of Green River flora. Our collections from Monte Bolca, Italy, are the largest in the country and are of great value for study and exhibit. Extractions: The research group working with fossil plants at Penn pursues paleoclimatic and paleoecologic questions. Our research approach is multi-disciplinary with data synthesis from the biological, geological, and ecological areas. Such an approach allows us to consider and address evolutionary, taxonomic, and biostratigraphic problems at the global scale. The geologic ages that we are most concerned with at this time are the Late Paleozoic and Tertiary, with most of the work being conducted using macrofossils. Current projects include: studies of the impact of the Carboniferous ice age on flora in the tropics and subtropics ( Hermann Pfefferkorn ) based on fossil localities in North America, Peru, and Europe and an understanding of Eocene age forests that grew above the Arctic Circle in the Canadian high Arctic during the last warm interval on Earth ( Ben LePage

He is Professor of Botany, and Professor and Chair of the Department of Systematics and Ecology, and Senior Curator of Paleobotany at the Natural History Muesum and Biodiversity Research Center at the University of Kansas. His research interests, in addition to Antarctic Permian, Triassic and Jurassic plants, include fossil fungi through time and fossil symbioses. He is co-author with Edith L. Taylor of the text book, "The Biology and Evolution of Fossil Plants". Edith L. Taylor University of Kansas ( etaylor@falcon.cc.ukans.edu Edie is a Profssor of Botany and Senior Curator in the Division of Paleobotany of the Natural History Museum, University of Kansas. Her first field season was at the Beardmore Glacier camp in 1985-86. This year marks her 6th season collecting fossil plants in Antarctica. Her research interests include Permian, Triassic and Jurassic floras from Antarctica. She is especially interested in studying fossil plants for evidence of ancient climates and is analyzing tree rings from Antarctic fossil forests.

Extractions: Welcome to the Paleobotanical Database! This project initially began as an in-house bibliographic database of our reprint collection in order to do away with an ever-enlarging card index. Since then, the database project has grown so large that we wanted to make it available in a searchable form on-line for other paleobotanists to use. As of August, 2002, there are close to 48,000 entries in the database. In almost all cases, the complete reference is included. A small proportion of the entries have been indexed for keywords, mostly the newer literature, and this indexing is continuing. For the most part, the database reflects our research interests of many years. Thus, there are many references on Antarctic paleobotany and palynology, as well as Antarctic geology and stratigraphy. Since I lead a seminar course on Women in Science every year, there are also many papers from this subject area. Sorry, but we cannot be a lending library, so please do not request copies of articles from us. Please use the interlibrary loan service at your institution.

Extractions: Kubla Kahn , by Samuel Taylor Coleridge There are two fascinating and favorite stories about living "fossil trees," which have been widely publicised and often repeated. Much detailed information is available on many easily found websites, so these two narratives will be brief: (A) Metasequoia glyptostroboides (Dawn Rewood): This tree was described from Japanese fossils by Dr. Shigeru Miki, professor of botany at Osaka City University in 1941. There were well known fossil redwoods from 20 million to 100 million years ago, found widely throughout the northern hemisphere from as far north as Spitsbergen Greeland and artic islands of Canada and extending south into Alaska, Western Canada and western U.S. and also present in Europe, Russia and eastern China. It was believed that all of these were the same tree as the California Coastal redwood, Sequoia sempervirens.

Extractions: Paleobotany Collection MSE Home Information Staff Collections Programs Natural Areas The collection has its roots in the private collection of Alonzo Yates, a recognized amateur invertebrate paleontologist who lived in Santa Barbara a century ago. Yates collected and traded material, assembling a fine small collection of invertebrates, especially Mollusca. He published several new species, and the type and illustrated materials for these descriptions are deposited with the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History for safekeeping. Other early collections were made by faculty of UCSB, particularly focusing on the fossils of the South Coast and the Channel Islands. Since the 1980s, the collection has been augmented by substantial teaching materials, including vertebrate casts and replicas gathered by Prof. André Wyss and plant materials gathered by Prof. Bruce Tiffney, including Carboniferous peels collected by Profs.
