These provinces are primarily influenced by the following first-order controls: depth and structure of the basement, original thickness of Jurassic mother salt, and the thickness and distribution of Tertiary clastic depositional sequences. Each province exhibits a unique salt inflation/deflation history that differs from adjacent provinces (Hall, 2001). Additionally, current depositional models have effectively tied the up-dip sedimentation on the shelf using well control to deep basin seismic stratigraphy outboard of the present day Sigsbee escarpment. However, regional depositional studies have generally left a large gap across the complex and poorly imaged sub-salt terrain across the outer shelf and deep water. An integrated regional approach is used in this study as a predictive tool to address the remaining sub-salt play potential in the Gulf of Mexico. The methodology utilizes an understanding of salt geometry and loading history on a regional scale to predict the age and nature of lithologic facies in areas that are poorly understood due to sub-salt seismic imaging issues. Stratigraphic objectives, structural play-types, and salt evolution for each tectonostratigraphic province are presented with an emphasis on sub-salt exploration. Finally, this integrated approach is combined with well, seismic, gravity, magnetic, and biostratigraphic data to produce a suite of paleogeographic maps for the Gulf of Mexico. These paleogeographic maps combine the structural and stratigraphic history of the Gulf of Mexico in a unique manner. This integrated methodology is an effective way to illustrate the dynamics of salt/sediment interaction on a regional scale.

With the motion and collision of the plates that make up the earth's crust the location and climate of familiar 'hot' or 'cold' places bears little relation to the present. In the North Atlantic area the Silurian marked the closure of the great 'Iapetus' Ocean that separated North America from Northern Europe. At that time, even though the boundary of the Eastern edge of North America was more or less in the same position as today, Newfoundland and a portion of Eastmost America was on the South of the ocean together with England and Ireland. Northern Ireland and Scotland were on the Northern flank. The end of the Silurian saw the forming of massive mountain ranges along the edges of the two continental margins, and in England a move to deposition of sediments derived from the new mountains so creating the Devonian system. The deposition of Silurian rocks was widespread worldwide.

Extractions: Paleogeography ("ancient geography") is an historical geologist's best description and interpretation of the distribution of major features of the Earth (i.e., global scale) and fine details of ancient environments (i.e., local scale). Important factors in determining paleogeographic reconstruction are the movement of Earth's crustal plates (and the continents upon those plates), and the changing of global sea levels. Both the position of crustal plates (continents) and global sea levels have been changing constantly over geological time and continue to do so today. Crustal plate movement creates zones of instability (marked by great crustal faults, explosive volcanoes, and great earthquake belts). Eventually, continental collision and resultant mountain building occur because plate motion does not stop. Global sea-level change inundates continental margins creating continental shelves and vast interior seaways on continents. Given long spans of time (say several hundred million years), continents tend to cluster together and attach themselves by collision. As recently as 250 million years ago, all the continents were joined in a great L-shaped supercontinent called Pangaea ("all lands") that straddled the equator and there was one great global ocean, Panthalassa.

They provide both large scale flooding periods as well as secondary "heart-beat" pulses and even some faster flutter of coastlines. These will be combined at all stages with specific outlines as delineated in several sources from interpretation of local stratigraphy, which include the additional local effects of downwarped foreland basins inland from orogenic zones, etc. The many inbetween stages of inland seas are only hinted at here (see various paleomaps). The West is a Cordilleran Seaway throughout this period. Many subsiding basins are filling with sediment shed from various eroding uplifts throughout this period (for example Ozark dome into Illinois Basin). These features and processes are identified but are not specified in the minimal outline below. CAMBRIAN/ORDOVICIAN Wrangellia superterrane arc is already migrating via transverse faulting along the Pacific subduction zone from the Ural Mountains in the form of the Talkeetna and Bonanza arcs, to later become part of BC as colliding Gravina Arc (Film 2).

Black Canyon of the Gunnison River, Colorado: The Black Canyon has the greatest depth to width ratio of any canyon in the Colorado River system. It appears to be very young, and there is an impossible contradiction in the "standard explanation" of its origin. A new model for its origin is given.
