On the one hand the Munich studies concentrate on the sedimentary response to geographical changes. On the other hand there is a focus on palaeobiogeography, the biological reactions on the change of continental or marine connections or disconnections, the shift of climatic zones and other factors influencing the spatial distribution of plants and animals. This aspect is a by product of many studies in systematics and evolution. Today investigations on palaeoclimatology have to contain palaeogeographic as well as palaeobiogeographic data.

The western part of the marine foreland, at Löderup, is eroding, threatening the vacation homes built on the beach. Recently a number of groins have been constructed in an attempt to restore the beach, or at least, stop further erosion. To put this erosion in perspective, we here offer some maps showing the shoreline changes at Sandhammaren and Löderup (just east of Kåseberga on the maps) since the last deglaciation some 13,000 years ago. High water level, higher in the north than in the south relative the present. During the regression, Sandhammaren Bank has accumulated (about 1 km of sand). After that followed a stillstand or minor transgression, in which the easter slope of the bank was eroded (the situation shown below). The climate was cold, a birch tundra. When the Baltic Ice Lake was emptied, the water level fell below -45 m and the whole map area became dry land. Small rivers eroded valleys that still can be seen on the bottoms, and the pine was dominating. We skipped the events during the Ancylus lake and went directly to the Litorina transgression. The Sandhammaren foreland has still not formed.

Remnant magnetism Polarity - The overall North-South orientation of the remnant magnetic field in the rocks. This can be either normal (as it is today) or reversed (with north and south magnetic poles changing places.) Magnetic reversals Declination - Like a compass needle, a remnant magnetic field also points in a straight line toward the magnetic pole. Dip To summarize, the remnant magnetic field in a rock gives an indication of the direction to the magnetic pole and the latitudinal distance from the pole when the rock was magnetized. Unfortunately, nothing about remnant magnetism gives any indication of longitude (i.e. the position around the circumference of the Earth). Wandering Poles wandered in the past, occupying positions far from its present location. However, an observation soon developed that cast doubt on the theory of polar wandering. When the polar wander paths obtained from rocks in North America and from rocks in Britain were compared, they were found to be different - as if to suggest that the magnetic pole had been in two different places at the same time in the past. Clearly, this was impossible. The solution to this puzzle was obtained when North America and Europe were adjusted on a map to connect to one another along the mid-Atlantic ridge. Assuming that the two continents were once joined brought the polar wander paths together until about the Jurassic - just when Wegener had suggested that they had begun to drift apart!
