Extractions: Physical Anthropology Physical anthropology deals with the biological nature of humans past and present. The physical anthropologist looks beyond purely biological phenomena to understand how biology, behavior and environment interact. Paleoanthropology documents the biological history of humans and, in conjunction with archaeology, analyzes those relationships for past humans. Human biology studies physiology, genetics, nutrition and epidemiology in modern human populations throughout the world in order to understand those relationships. The physical anthropology concentration within the CWRU Anthropology major provides an excellent overview of general anthropology, introduction to the subfield of physical anthropology, and an opportunity for more advanced study in paleoanthropology and human biology. Three physical anthropologists in the Anthropology Department and two in the Department of Anatomy of the School of Medicine offer courses regularly. In addition, undergraduate students have the opportunity to conduct independent projects at other institutions including the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. A physical anthropology concentration would provide the student with the background and skills for further graduate study and for professional study in the medical sciences (or course with the addition of necessary prerequisites). It provides the students with many other transferable skills including a biocultural perspective on human biology and culture, the ability to analyze data, interpret findings, and communicate them effectively.

It starts at least 4 million years ago, when a population of apelike creatures from eastern Africa turned onto a unique evolutionary road. Thus, the anthropologist's comparative perspective must be expanded to include more than prehistoric human societies, for behavior has primate roots as well. To fully understand humankind we must learn more about its place in the natural habitat of living things. Biological (or physical) anthropology looks at Homo sapiens as a genus and species, tracing their biological origins, evolutionary development, and genetic diversity. Biological anthropologists study the biocultural prehistory of Homo to understand human nature and, ultimately, the evolution of the brain and nervous system itself. Extractions: Links to Forensic Sites: The focus of the program in forensic anthropology is to apply skeletal and biological principles and techniques to the identification of skeletal and badly decomposed human remains. While the Forensic Identification Certificate is to prepare undergraduates for introductory level positions in forensic science, similar preparation is offered at the graduate Masters Degree level. The arrival of Dr. Turhon A. Murad in 1972 at CSU, Chico saw the development of the academic service of forensic anthropology to northern California which was enhanced by the addition of Dr. P. Willey in 1989. Both Drs. Willey and Murad are Fellows of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and Diplomates of the American Board of Forensic Anthropology. Together Drs. Murad and Willey represent over 70 years of experience in general physical anthropology and human skeletal biology. Additionally, they permit CSU, Chico to be listed as the only university throughout the country which supports two ABFA certified forensic anthropologists. By offering its identification services for over twenty-five years, the Physical Anthropology Human Identification Laboratory (PAHIL) has proven to be valuable throughout northern California and to neighboring states of Nevada and Oregon. The forensic anthropology faculty, staff, and students at CSU, Chico have played an important role in assisting various county sheriffs and coroners, county district attorneys, local police departments, as well as the California Department of Justice and arson investigators throughout the University's service area and beyond.
