Lemurs are primitive primates that live in trees and are found only on the island of Madagascar and the nearby Comoro Islands off the east coast of Africa. Mouse lemurs have heads that are no bigger than a human thumb and weigh just a few ounces (one ounce is 30 grams). Many of the animals, which have long noses, agile limbs, and piercing round eyes, are endangered because their forest habitat is being destroyed. Island collection An international research team compared the physical characteristics of mouse lemurs - their teeth, skulls, length, and body size - from 12 geographic locations.

Extractions: We identify three traits that are transmitted in humans in a Mendelian fashion: Aggression (A), Perfectionism (P) and Narcissism (N). We believe that the genetic loci corresponding to these traits will soon be identified. Thus, DNA analyses in the near future will allow one to trace personality traits and even personality types in ancestral hominid lineages. The trait of perfectionism is not a basic drive of ambition and is not associated with a rage reaction. Rather it is a mediator of the unbridled drives of aggression and/or narcissism. The stereotypic acts associated with the trait of perfectionism are obsessiveness, compulsiveness, repetition, and the maintenance of neatness, order and symmetry. It is concluded that certain autistic and schizophrenic individuals are those in whom the two components of ambition, i.e., aggression and narcissism, have been suppressed by genetic or environmental factors, either congenitally, in childhood, or after maturity, thus revealing in the individual a primitive state of perfectionism.

Extractions: Overview Of The Investigation In Texas During April 11-13, 1996, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed that two monkeys in a private quarantine facility in Texas were infected with a filovirus, the Reston subtype of Ebola virus (Ebola-Reston). The infected monkeys had been imported from the Phillippines in a shipment of 100 primates and were housed in two rooms at the Texas quarantine facility. Although infection with Ebola-Reston virus can be fatal in monkeys, this subtype of Ebola virus has not been known to cause disease in humans; in contrast, infection with other Ebola virus subtypes, such as Ebola-Zaire and Ebola-Sudan, is often fatal in humans. This document answers some of the questions related to the biology and spread of filoviruses, the investigation in Texas, and Ebola virus hemorrhagic fever. What are Filoviruses? Filoviruses belong to the family Filoviridae , one of several groups of viruses that can cause hemorrhagic fever in animals and humans. Filoviruses use ribonucleic acid (RNA) as their genetic material. When magnified several thousand times by an electron microscope, filoviruses have the appearance of long filaments or threads. The virus structure is sensitive to many ordinary disinfectants, and therefore filoviruses can be readily inactivated (killed). Because filoviruses can be extremely hazardous, laboratory studies of these viruses must be conducted in special maximum-containment facilities.

Extractions: AREA-[ ARTICLE ] by Dr. John D. Pettigrew Primates share a half-dozen brain pathways not found in any of the other 20 mammalian orders. These features are quantitative and are believed to reliably distinguish primates from non-primates. They provide a unique signature, enabling us to recognize a primate brain after a set of tests which involve labeling the pathways going from the eye to the brain. Imagine my surprise when I found these features in the brain of a Gray-headed Flying Fox (Pteropus poliocephalus) during a routine investigation! Subsequent work by myself and others confirmed that this is true for all of the flying fox species thus far examined. Flying foxes belong to the order Megachiroptera, commonly referred to as megabats. The nearly 200 species of these bats are vegetarians that feed on fruit and nectar. They are mostly large, with wingspans measuring from two to six feet and navigate by their excellent vision. Recently, working with Dr. Howard Cooper of the INSERM Laboratoire de Neuropsychologie in Lyon, France, we extended the comparison to include more visual nuclei, as well as more species of megabats and more prosimmian primates (lower primates, including lemurs and lorises). Under the microscope, the affinities between megabat and lemur brains are so striking that it is quite difficult to tell them apart! So far as one can tell from the intricate details of the wiring of thousands of nerve cells, primates and megabats shared a common ancestor not shared by any other group of mammals.

Otherwise, the order is found in the Americas from eastern and southern Mexico to southeastern Brazil, most of Africa, Madagascar, the southwestern part of the Arabian Peninsula, south-central and southeastern Asia, Japan, and the East Indies as far as Sulawesi and Timor. Included under the Primates here are 13 families , 71 genera, and 233 species. Since people themselves are primates, the order has attracted much interest and investigation, and there are numerous views on classification, especially between the order and family levels. A basic scheme that has been widely followed is Simpson's 1945) division of the Primates into two suborders: Prosimii, for the families Tupaiidae, Lemuridae, Indriidae, Daubentoniidae, Lorisidae, and Tarsiidae; and Anthropoidea, for the families Cebidae, Callitrichidae, Cercopithecidae, Pongidae, and Hominidae. Two major problems with this plan involve the status of the Tupaiidae and Tarsiidae. The tupaiids long had been considered by some authorities to belong to the Insectivora. Now, however, there has been general acceptance that the tupaiids represent an entirely separate order, the Scandentia, and that view has been accepted herein.
