1. SETI: The Drake Equation
http://www.activemind.com/Mysterious/Topics/SETI/drake_equation.html

Extractions: SETI: The Drake Equation Description Try the Drake Equation for Yourself Description The Drake Equation was developed by Frank Drake in 1961 as a way to focus on the factors which determine how many intelligent, communicating civilizations there are in our galaxy. The Drake Equation is: N = N* f p n e f l f i f c f L The equation can really be looked at as a number of questions: N represents the number of stars in the Milky Way Galaxy Question: How many stars are in the Milky Way Galaxy? Answer: Current estimates are around 200 billion. f p is the fraction of stars that have planets around them Question: What percentage of stars have planetary systems? Answer: Thanks to advances in technology, new planets are being discovered every month. Within a few years we may have a reasonably accurate estimate. For now we'll say 20% (a standard estimate given my many including Frank Drake). n e is the number of planets per star that are capable of sustaining life Question: For each star that does have a planetary system, how many planets are capable of sustaining life?

Extractions: First, thank you for all the support everyone has shown. As you may be aware I have decided to re-write SetiQueue for the latest version of the Seti@Home client. The new version is very different from the old in both code and operation. To read about how the new version compares to the old check out what's new The current SetiQueue version is: If you are unfamiliar with SETI check out about and the SETI At Home web site If you wish to provide feedback on SetiQueue please check the Wish List to see what has been suggested and for my email address. If you are looking for the SetiQueue statistics information please see the Wish List . This is on-top of the priority list for the new version. Seti@home has been recently experiencing bandwidth problems. SetiQueue can help with these connect problems, but such problems makes it more difficult to configure and prime a new setiqueue. 9. Howstuffworks "How SETI Works"
Looking for ET It's the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (seti).Find out what would happen if ET were to phone! How seti Works.
http://computer.howstuffworks.com/seti.htm

Extractions: Are we alone in the universe, or are there intelligent beings out there with whom we could communicate? We may never know if we rely on space travel distances between the stars are unimaginably vast, and our most advanced ideas for space rockets , such as light propulsion nuclear propulsion solar sails and matter-antimatter engines , are many years away from becoming reality. How can we detect signs of extraterrestrial (ET) life? One way is to basically eavesdrop on any radio communications coming from beyond Earth. Radio is not only a cheap way of communicating, but also a sign of a technological civilization. Humanity has been unintentionally announcing its presence since the 1930s by way of the radio waves and television broadcasts that travel from Earth into outer space everyday.

http://seti.index.hu/

Kezdõdik a földönkívüli-vadászat - [origo] 2003.03.14. Új szakaszába érkezett a SETI at Home program: az eddigi adatok alapján megkezdik a 200 legígéretesebb célpont részletes vizsgálatát. Március 18-20. között a University of California (Berkeley, USA) kutatói a világ legnagyobb egyedi rádióteleszkópja, a 300 méter átmérõjû Arecibo teleszkóp segítségével a 200 legérdekesebb rádiójel nyomába erednek. Ezeket mintegy 5 milliárdnyi jel közül választották ki. A felhasználók nevét napokon belül közzéteszik a program honlapján.

seti The Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence. NASA joined inseti efforts at a lowlevel in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
http://history.nasa.gov/seti.html

Extractions: Since the beginning of civilization, people have wondered if we are alone in the universe or whether there is intelligent life somewhere else. In the late twentieth century, scientists converged upon the basic idea of scanning the sky and "listening" for non-random patterns of electromagnetic emissions such as radio or television waves in order to detect another possible civilization somewhere else in the universe. In late 1959 and early 1960, the modern SETI era began when Frank Drake conducted the first such SETI search at approximately the same time that Giuseppe Cocconi and Philip Morrison published a key journal article suggesting this approach. NASA joined in SETI efforts at a low-level in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Some of these SETI-related efforts included Project Orion, the Microwave Observing Project, the High Resolution Microwave Survey, and Toward Other Planetary Systems. On Columbus Day in 1992, NASA initiated a formal, more intensive, SETI program. Less than a year later, however, Congress canceled the program. For more background on SETI history and the cancellation of NASA's SETI program, you may want to read an

http://www.zrlm.com/highstress/setimon/

Extractions: SETI Monitor is a free add-on for SETI@home. It allows you to monitor the activity of your SETI@home client and see what it finds using virtually no CPU power. SETI Monitor shows the signals found by your SETI@home client and saves information about completed work units. It will also tell you if you find something interesting. You can see the signals found in your current work unit, browse through previous results and see the totals. SETI Monitor is extremely efficient as it uses less than 0.01% of CPU power. SETI Monitor also features the easiest to use work unit caching system for SETI@home in existence. It allows you to download several work units at once, which SETI@home will process one after another without the need to connect to the server. It will then connect, return all the results and get new work units. All you need to do is to set the cache size, and it will start working right away. The cache works with all versions of SETI@home for Windows, including the text and graphic clients.
