I started realizing its significance after reading a short article in the French Edition of "Vogue". The article was about the "desexualization" of our society. It convincingly pointed out how people talk more about sex in magazines and on TV shows, but have less and less sex in real life. Her earlier work was primarily in symbolic anthropology and cultural production, especially in relation to drama, and she recently returned to this area with researchon popular ritual opera, especially mulianxi. Since 1985, she has been conducting research in the north China countryside, examining changes in rural social organization in the wake of the rural economic reform. Much of this work has involved examination of the reformulation of gender in the countryside, and this led to concentrated work on the contemporary women's movement. Teaching was rated "excellent" in the 1995 Teaching Quality Assessment. In the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise social anthropology research was given a rating of 4. We offer a single honours BSc in Social Anthropology as well as joint degrees with the other groups that make up the Department of Human Sciences: Sociology, Communications and Psychology. We participate in the SOCRATES international student exchange programme, which provides opportunities for undergraduates to spend a semester at another European university. The work placement system , which is a key feature of the undergraduate programme, provides the opportunity for students to gain experience in ethnographic research. Work-placements may be arranged overseas, and roughly half our students spend their second workplacements abroad, engaged in research. Students are regularly offered research placements in South Africa, Botswana, India and Nepal. Students doing these programmes work under the guidance of a supervisor and are expected to have done a taught masters training course before embarking on their research. This programme is designed as an advanced course in Social Anthropology and is intended for students who have already studied Anthropology as a degree course or a major part of a degree course at undergraduate level. It is recognised by the Economic and Social Research Council as of Research Training status and the Department has Mode A recognition. This means that on successful completion of the course students are considered by the ESRC as sufficiently prepared to embark on research in Social Anthropology. Many of our students do in fact go on to do MPhil and PhD research.
