World Wetlands Day About Ramsar Key Documents The Convention on Wetlands, signed in Ramsar, Iran, in 1971, is an intergovernmental treaty which provides the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. There are presently 136 Contracting Parties to the Convention, with 1263 wetland sites, totaling 107.5 million hectares , designated for inclusion in the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance. Mission Statement: "The Convention's mission is the conservation and wise use of all wetlands through local, regional and national actions and international cooperation, as a contribution towards achieving sustainable development throughout the world" (Ramsar COP8, 2002). Extractions: Wildlife Tours The Chanslor Wetlands Wildlife Project protects approximately 250 acres of crucial wetlands habitat in the historic fishing village of Bodega Bay, California, 1.25 hours north of San Francisco. The mission of the organization is to establish and operate an economically self-sufficient environmental education facility and wildlife preserve. The Project was dedicated in June of 1993 and is supported by the hospitality and recreation businesses operated by Chanslor Wildlife, LLC on this unique property. The Project area is part of the Salmon Creek Watershed and encompasses brackish marsh, a tidal lagoon, freshwater marsh and pond, riparian habitat, wet meadow and seasonal pools. The northern border of the property is Salmon Creek, a breeding stream for threatened coho salmon and steelhead trout. Located on the Pacific Flyway, this varied ecosystem attracts myriad migrating shorebirds, waterfowl and raptors. Red-legged frogs, western pond turtles and rare forms of plant and animal life thrive within the preserve area. The Wetlands Project is part of the historic Chanslor Ranch originally part of Rancho Bodega established in 1844 and a rich human history is part of the property. Former residents include Coast Miwok, Spanish explorers, Russian settlers, and Italian sheep and cattle ranchers.

Extractions: The Ohio Wetlands Foundation, a non-profit organization, was formed in 1992 by the Ohio Home Builders Association. The Foundation's mission is to provide cost effective, high quality, wetland off-site compensatory mitigation credits and to fund wetlands research and education. The Ohio Wetlands Foundation restores and enhances land that was previously environmentally sensitive wetland. The development of compensatory wetland mitigation credits follows the guidelines developed by a federal interagency task force and published in the federal register in 1995 by the Army Corps of Engineers. Any entity wishing to use off-site compensatory mitigation must follow the rules and laws governing wetland impacts and must obtain a permit from the Army Corp of Engineers and/or Ohio EPA. The Ohio Wetlands Foundation was the first banker in the country to construct a wetlands mitigation bank and to complete the required five year monitoring period. The Ohio Wetlands Foundation has sold all of its credits in its first three banks representing approximately 500 acres of wetland restoration at three different locations: Hebron, Big Island, and Sandy Ridge. Credits are available at three banks: Slate Run, Three Eagles and Trumbull Creek.

It marks the date of the signing of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea. WWD was celebrated for the first time in 1997 and made an encouraging beginning. Each year, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and groups of citizens at all levels of the community have taken advantage of the opportunity to undertake actions aimed at raising public awareness of wetland values and benefits in general and the Ramsar Convention in particular. No wetlands - no water! The suggested theme for World Wetlands Day 2003 is " No wetlands - no water " (the slogan taken from the title of our new poster), in honor of the UN's International Year of Freshwater. The Ramsar Standing Committee thought it fitting to urge celebrants of World Wetlands Day to associate their activities with the IYF in order both to strengthen that worthy effort and to raise the prominence of their own WWD efforts by being among the first International Year of Freshwater celebrations of the year. The International Year of Freshwater The United Nations General Assembly in resolution 55/196 proclaimed the year 2003 as the International Year of Freshwater. The resolution encourages governments, the United Nations system and all other actors to take advantage of the Year to increase awareness of the importance of sustainable freshwater use, management and protection. It also calls upon governments, national and international organizations, non-governmental organizations and the private sector to make voluntary contributions and to lend other forms of support to the Year.
