    Extractions: The Center for Wetlands at the University of Florida, the first of its kind in the world, was founded in 1973 by H.T. Odum. His goal was to use the Center as a focal point for both basic ecological research on wetlands as well as their sustainable use in meeting environmental management needs of the society. The Center quickly became the forum for interfacing traditional engineers with ecologists especially regarding the use of natural and constructed wetlands for waste water treatment. Not only was the Center the first academic group to propose and implement the use of natural systems for waste treatment, but this effort was largely responsible for the development of the entire field of ecological engineering. Currently, such "green" engineering has become the focus of major engineering schools throughout northern and central Europe.

    Extractions: Wetlands prevent flooding by holding water much like a sponge. By doing so, wetlands help keep river levels normal and filter and purify the surface water. Wetlands accept water during storms and whenever water levels are high. When water levels are low, wetlands slowly release water. A Marsh in Scotland Wetlands also release vegetative matter into rivers, which helps feed fish in the rivers. Wetlands help to counter balance the human effect on rivers by rejuvenating them and surrounding ecosystems. Many animals that live in other habitats use wetlands for migration or reproduction. For example, herons nest in large old trees, but need shallow areas in order to wade for fish and aquatic life. Amphibians often forage in upland areas but return to the water to mate and reproduce. While wetlands are truly unique, they must not be thought of as isolated and independent habitat. To the contrary, wetlands are vital to the health of all other biomes and to wildlife and humans everywhere. Unlike most other habitats, wetlands directly improve other ecosystems. Because of its many cleansing benefits, wetlands have been compared to kidneys. The analogy is good one. Wetlands and kidneys both help control water flow and cleanse the system.

    Extractions: Wetlands Educational Site of the North Alpena, Michigan Just south of Alpena, Michigan is the brand new outdoor facility currently called "The Wetlands Classroom." It is a ten acre piece of prime coastal wetland property that has been adapted into an educational experience. The present "classroom" is a small building that serves as the interpretive center for the complex. The property has all the classical components of a Great Lakes Plustrine wetland, of the lagoon and barrier type. Several ancient beach ridges cross the property. A beautiful and extensive boardwalk system has been contructed across the wetland. Three educational gathering areas have been built into the design, which is all ADA approved. Here we see the view from the lakeside platform in panorama. The wet meadow with the fringing cattail marsh beyond is clearly seen behind the bird feeder. A shingle, shrubby beach ridge rises in the center part of the photograph, falling off to a beach swale on the right. To the right of the shore line, Thunder Bay and Alpena can be seen in the background. Another ancient beach ridge is just out of sight on the left. This platform is on the west side of the property and overlooks the shrub zone and wet meadow.
