Editorial Review

Product Description
This series examines topical issues concerning the environment. Here, the subject of acid rain is introduced to the young reader - its detrimental effects on rocks, lakes, forests, buildings and people, and the role of prevailing winds and pollution. The author describes how rainwater becomes more acid as a result of air pollution. Measures to reduce the problem are discussed, the author suggesting practical steps we can each take to reduce the risks, such as the reduction or the filtering of emissions of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. Finally, international attitudes to the problem and encouraging responses towards resolving this problem are discussed. The author has played an active role in environmental education with the EEC, Council of Europe, United Nations Environment Programme and UNESCO. He has also written "The Environment". ... Product Description
The authors argue that present American policy for pollution control is inadequate because it does not account for institutional biases. The authors demonstrate a methodological approach to the acid rain issue whereby emissions trading could be performed through a controlled leasing policy instead of outright trades. ... Read more

Although acid rain and ozone layer depletion are highly-publicized issues, they have not received the legal attention they warrant. This detailed analysis fills this gap. With a thorough scientific background and a review of technically feasible countermeasures, it addresses the applicable rules of international law, exposing the tension between the traditional concept of sovereignty and the need for international cooperation. ... Product Description
'Acid rain' is a broad term used to describe several ways that acids fall out of the atmosphere. A more precise term is acid deposition, which has two parts: wet and dry. Wet deposition refers to acidic rain, fog, and snow. As this acidic water flows over and through the ground, it affects a variety of plants and animals. The strength of the effects depends on many factors, including how acidic the water is, the chemistry and buffering capacity of the soils involved, and the types of fish, trees, and other living things that rely on the water. Dry deposition refers to acidic gases and particles. About half of the acidity in the atmosphere falls back to earth through dry deposition. The wind blows these acidic particles and gases onto buildings, cars, homes, and trees. Dry deposited gases and particles can also be washed from trees and other surfaces by rainstorms. When that happens, the runoff water adds those acids to the acid rain, making the combination more acidic than the falling rain alone. Prevailing winds blow the compounds that cause both wet and dry acid deposition across state and national borders, and sometimes over hundreds of miles. This new book combines an excellent background article with over 900 abstracts and book citations. Easy access is provided by title, author, and subject indexes. ... Read more
