Book Description
The most exciting moment for an aeronautical engineer is when his or her design becomes a working aircraft, the endpoint of a journey that begins in the classroom. This textbook provides the resources that students need to understand the methods and thought processes involved in designing aircraft. Students learn through the use of specific analytical principles and practical examples taught to them through examples, case studies, and corresponding problems to solve.

For professors, this textbook comes complete with end-of-chapter homework problems that provide a summary of the concepts and features contained in the chapters. The problems provide students with an excellent opportunity to analyze and synthesize industry examples, ensuring they understand the key concepts and their applications.

A Windows-based software package on CD-ROM, entitled AeroDYNAMIC, provides a single integrated package with one universal user interface providing access to virtual laboratories, simulations, and design synthesis and analysis software based on the methods presented in the text.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not so good
Quite hard to follow. The organization is pretty weird and jumps all over the place. Diagram that are being refered to and are usually on the next page, so you end up fliping back and forth. Formulars are organized pretty badly. End of chapter has a summary which give the important parts, so that's a plus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information source
This is a great book for students just entering the world of aeronautics. It starts with the basics and gradually moves up, at a pace comfortable for almost anyone.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
This is a great book to understand the principles of wings, stability and structures, I recommend for the ones who does not know a lot about aeronautics and want to know a bit about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Motivation
Dr. Brandt did really great job on this book. The way of his approach to the idea of becoming aerospace design enginners is excellent, and most of the problams and exercises he describe are also outstanding.

Product Description
"Commissioned by the European Space Agency, this book details specific propulsion technologies as envisioned by 2020. Each technology has been considered in terms of concept, associated key technologies, development status and proposed roadmaps. The reader is led through all the steps that propulsion will likely take between now and the 2020s in a clear, concise, and detailed way, including market and feasibility perspectives when applicable.
The 16 chapters follow a developmental logic. The material starts with the future of SRM, grounded on R&D done at present, goes through the development of LOX/HC liquid rocket engines, a technology based on U.S. and Russian work of the 60s and 70s. It then looks into future technologies, and systems just beginning to make their impact felt now, such as superconductivity applied to electric propulsion, MW-class ion engines (perhaps utilizing a nuclear power source), solar sails, laser propulsion, nuclear propulsion (such as the promising VASIMR), and ISRU." ... Book Description
A New Edition of the Most Effective Text/Reference in the Field! Aerodynamics, Aeronautics, and Flight Mechanics, Second Edition Barnes W. McCormick, Pennsylvania State University 57506-2 When the first edition of Aerodynamics, Aeronautics, and Flight Mechanics was published, it quickly became one of the most important teaching and reference tools in the field. Not only did generations of students learn from it, they continue to use it on the job-the first edition remains one of the most well-thumbed guides you'll find in an airplane company. Now this classic text/reference is available in a bold new edition. All new material and the interweaving of the computer throughout make the Second Edition even more practical and current than before! A New Edition as Complete and Applied as the First Both analytical and applied in nature, Aerodynamics, Aeronautics, and Flight Mechanics presents all necessary derivations to understand basic principles and then applies this material to specific examples. You'll find complete coverage of the full range of topics, from aerodynamics to propulsion to performance to stability and control. Plus, the new Second Edition boasts the same careful integration of concepts that was an acclaimed feature of the previous edition. For example, Chapters 9, 10, and 11 give a fully integrated presentation of static, dynamic, and automatic stability and control. These three chapters form the basis of a complete course on stability and control. New Features You'll Find in the Second Edition
* A new chapter on helicopter and V/STOL aircraft- introduces a phase of aerodynamics not covered in most current texts
* Even more material than the previous edition, including coverage of stealth airplanes and delta wings

3-0 out of 5 stars THE SECOND EDITION IS NO BETTER THAN THE FIRST
I have both editions of this book. The first one was not so good; the second is still worse. It is the first edition with some few changes and many misprints. The introduction of some computer programs does not make this book an up-to-date one.
It is still an old book with just a colorfull cover.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not an easy read, but a good reference book;
I plead that this not be used as text for any course, as it is a lousy teaching book. It lacks continuity and contains far to many typos. Does make a good desk ref, lots of real world data, but with an under used index individuals unfamiliar with the text might have a hard time finding what they are looking for.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could be better
As I read in another review, the quality of the book depends on what you need it for. Although it covers a breadth of topics, it is poor for learning from. There are misprints and not enough examples. It also annoyed me that the derivations weren't always worked out completely, sometimes introducing other variables without explaination. You'd have to have read and absorbed all the previous chapters to make those leaps on your own. There is a very good list of notations in the back, however, and the author is consistent with it which somewhat lessens this problem. A pet peeve from the book, however, is how the author assigns writing computer programs as problems, and then refers to those programs as derivations of other principles later in the book. For a better introduction on aeronautical principles, I recommend Anderson's text, which is an easy read and is very clear in its derivations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book, but it depends on what you need it for
I had this book while in college, and now I use it frequently at work. As a teaching tool it is horrible. It is vague and lacks detailed explanations. For real world use it is invaluable. I use it a lot and it is an excellent general reference book. If you need a general reference for aerodynamics and aircraft flight get it. If you are looking for a teaching tool look elsewhere.

3-0 out of 5 stars Definatelly not 5 stars...
We used this book for my Stability and Control class in UCLA and I have to say that almost all of my classmates hated it!It is full of mistakes and misprints, almost no examples and the very limited ones are hard tounderstand. You need a very strong back ground or a really good professorto understand this book. On the other hand, it was handy for Boeing 747 andCherokee stats. Therefore I can not say "do not buy it" but atleast look for a better one. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
This text is a practical guide to building Kalman filters and shows how the filtering equations can be applied to real-life problems. Numerous examples are presented in detail showing the many ways in which Kalman filters can be designed. Computer code written in FORTRAN, MATLAB®, and True BASIC accompanies all of the examples so that the interested reader can verify concepts and explore issues beyond the scope of the text.

Sometimes mistakes are introduced intentionally to the initial filter designs in order to show the reader what happens when the filter is not working properly. The text spends a great deal of time setting up a problem before the Kalman filter is actually formulated in order to give the reader an intuitive feel for the problem being addressed. Real problems are seldom presented in the form of differential equations and they usually don't have unique solutions. Therefore, the authors illustrate several different filtering approaches for tackling a problem. Readers will gain experience in software and performance tradeoffs for determining the best filtering approach for the application at hand.

5-0 out of 5 stars A well written and practical textbook
I purchased this book primarily to gain some basic understanding of kalman filtering, but have found the book so interesting and engaging that I have taken the time to rewrite the code to pascal and run the examples etc, as presented in the book. Being a systems engineer by education, but not by profession, the approach used in the book allowed me to apply some of my previous but unused training very efficiently.

The practical approach, along with just enough notation to be rigorous, makes for a thoughtful read, but is still easily understood. When combined with the examples, the alternative approaches presented and the code it achieves exactly what the authors state as their objectives.

5-0 out of 5 stars information
Although I am disappointed in the second reviewers comments he is wrong concerning the code. Complete code is presented in the text and is on CD for all of the examples. Readers can now make up their own mind before purchasing the text. If you go to the Google Book Search and type in Zarchan you will be able to read the entire text. I suggest people who have previously been terrified of Kalman filters and want to learn how to build one, read the Introduction and possibly the second Chapter to see if the text meets their needs and is in accordance with their individual learning styles. I know that many readers have found the text useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
This book builds up the concepts needed to understand Kalman filtering from very basic ideas like least squares, and tries to keep things grounded in practical examples. It is, as advertised, the practical approach, totally unpretentious, and clearly written.

The commenter referred to as the 'second commenter' in the author's comment has apparently withdrawn his comment and is not me. ... Read more

Book Description
This book is about the theory and methods of controlling the temperature of a satellite. It is the first to present satellite thermal control as an organized engineering discipline systematically derived from the principles of heat transfer. The treatment is thorough but consciously readable and requires only basic prerequisite knowledge of physics and mathematics. Although the main thrust is to give spacecraft managers and systems engineers a background for directing and advising during the evolution of a satellite thermal design, there is enough to attract students and aerospace engineers of all specialties. For those already involved in satellite thermal control, the book provides a valuable source of data and a definitive reference to the problems and methods of solution encountered in their trade. All the illustrations and numerical examples refer directly to actual situations. The author uses his wide experience to explain many of the difficult points that have made thermal control often a confusing subject. Significant selections are cited from the innumerable publications that have appeared since the launch of Sputnik in 1957. In addition, the author draws on vital material that, for one reason or another, has never been reported in general publications. The result is a comprehensive textbook on one of the most essential aspects in the design of satellites. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Satellite Thermal Control for Systems Engineers
This is an interesting reference book for satellite thermal control. There are a few quite significant examples in most chapters that give readers deep impressions on the application of thermal control. However, the last chapter (Thermal Verification Tests) is the weakest place and needs to be improved greatly in this book because only brief descriptions and statements (without any good examples like the previous chapters) in the thermal balance test. From my personal experience, the verification by test is the most important and formidable area for, not only thermal engineers but also system engineers, in the satellite thermal control development. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Comments from author on 5th edition
The fifth edition has three new chapters on important topics related to improving missile guidance performance and several important new concepts in the Appendix. The first new chapter presents several alternative ways of developing guidance laws numerically. These techniques can be used to derive more advanced guidance laws when the missile guidance system dynamics become very complex. An example is presented showing the advantages of a new advanced guidance law over more conventional guidance laws. Previous editions of the text have shown that intentional or unintentional spiraling maneuvers on the part of a tactical ballistic missile can also make it particularly difficult for a pursuing missile to hit.Estimating the target weave frequency is a critical component in advanced guidance laws that can be used to counter these spiraling threats. The second new chapter presents a linear Kalman filter bank approach, originally introduced in the 1960's, for accurately estimating the target weave frequency and improving missile guidance system performance. So far, all of the engagement simulations presented in this text have either been in one or two dimensions. This was done to make it easier for the reader to more easily understand all of the concepts presented in the text. The third new chapter provides several examples on how to convert previous engagement simulation code to three dimensions in both the tactical and strategic worlds. A simplified mapping database is included with the text in order to demonstrate how geographical context can be provided in three dimensional strategic engagement simulations. An example of one of the new concepts presented in the Appendix is the use of the discrete Fourier Transform for calculating the miss due to weaving targets. The new topics are treated from both an analytical and simulation point of view so that readers with different backgrounds and learning styles can benefit from the new material.
On a personal note, it has still been very gratifying for me to learn that many people working with or having to learn about missile guidance have found Tactical and Strategic Missile Guidance useful.Over the years many readers have contacted me and have asked questions when the book's material was not clear to them.Material in the existing chapters has been clarified so that all will benefit from my interaction with the readers. It is still my hope that this fifth edition will be of value not only to new readers, but will also be worthwhile to those who have already read the previous editions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tactical and Strategic Missile Guidance, Fourth Edition
Ordering was easy and product arrived quickly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some problems
The matlab scripts do not follow the matlab programming style, and many of the buildin functions of matlab should be used for simplicity and efficiency, such as ode45.

There is a possible error in the 2nd chapter .
On page 13.The closing velocity is defined as

Vc = -d(Rtm)/dt

The author says that" In other words, from calculus we know that the closing velocity will be zero when Rtm is a minimum(i.e.the function is either minimum or maximum when its derivative is zero)."

But the function must be contineous and *differentiable*.
Just think a case with target and missile both on x axis, and missile fly with a constant speed. You will see that the Rtm function is not differentiable at x=0.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding text for learning about missile guidance

Professor Zarchan's text is an outstanding
treatment of missile guidance and control.
The derivation of proportional navigation and
other missile control laws provides insight
and the additions for ballistic missiles are
particularly relevant for today's missile
specialists. The computer programs provide a
quick reference, and enhance the derivations.
A must have for developers, testers, or
anyone with an interest in missile guidance
and control. ... Read more

A new demand for advanced Internet and IP services, entertainment, and multicasting services as well as advanced applications related to multimedia, telecommuting, etc. are the driving forces behind new satellite and communications research and development.

This book challenges the conventional view of the future of satellite communications in terms of technology and services. The text includes not only detailed descriptions for near-term trends but also includes descriptions of far-future trends.

Although this book addresses very advanced technology and applications, it does not contain a large amount of equations or technical jargon. Business executives and other telecommunications and networking personnel who are interested in monitoring future trends will be interested in this book as well.

Much of the content was originally written or presented at professional conferences, but the book also includes new material developed especially for this volume. This book will give readers many hints and insights for future development of satellite communications. ... Read more
