5-0 out of 5 stars From the Early Days of Rockets
By the 1930's the art of flying had become fairly commonplace. The art of rocketry was just beginning. And when there's any question, form an association for like minded people to get together. The results were several: The Institute of the Aeronautical Sciences and the American Rocket Society were formed in 1930 and 1932.
From here came the early experimentors who helped to put the field into the public's eye. Here were the people who began the early work to design rocket engines. For instance there was James Wyld. He bagan designing a rocket engine with regenerative cooling, circulating the propellent around the engine to keep it from melting. His engine became a series of engines, eventually a company Reaction Motors Inc. A few years later an engine from RMI powered the Bell X-1 with Chuck Yeager to break the sound barrier. in 1958 RMI merged with Thiokol who builds the solid rocket boosters for the shuttle program.

This is a fascinating book, filled with the names of people who did a lot to bring about the world we live in today. Dr. Crouch, a senior curator at the National Air and Space Museum has a writing style that makes these days come alive. ... Read more

Product Description

Science in Flux traces the history of one of the most powerful nuclear test reactors in the United States and the only nuclear facility ever built by NASA. In the late 1950s NASA constructed Plum Brook Station on a vast tract of undeveloped land near Sandusky, Ohio. Once fully operational in 1963, it supported basic research for NASA’s nuclear rocket program (NERVA).

Plum Brook represents a significant, if largely forgotten, story of nuclear research, political change, and the professional culture of the scientists and engineers who devoted their lives to construct and operate the facility. In 1973, after only a decade of research, the government shut Plum Brook down before many of its experiments could be completed. Even the valiant attempt to redefine the reactor as an environmental analysis tool failed, and the facility went silent. The reactors lay in costly, but quiet standby for nearly a quarter-century before the Nuclear Regulatory Commission decided to decommission the reactors and clean up the site.

The history of Plum Brook reveals the perils and potentials of that nuclear technology. As NASA, Congress, and space enthusiasts all begin looking once again at the nuclear option for sending humans to Mars, the echoes of Plum Brook’s past will resonate with current policy and space initiatives.

Product Description
"This is the first full-length history of the X-43 project, written by the project historian at Dryden Flight Research Center. The project achieved the first in-flight testing of a scramjet engine, at speeds of nearly Mach 7 and Mach 10. Based on that exclusive access, the book illustrates ñ with real world examples ñ how groundbreaking technology unfolds. It details the development of the scramjet over the last half-century, providing the reader with an understanding of how external factors influence a new technology.
The book begins with the invention of the scramjet concept, and then details the projects of the 1960s through the 1980s and why they failed. It describes how the X-43 developed from these events, and follows the transformation from the original idea through hardware development and testing, the loss of the first vehicle, the return to flight, and the success of the second and third flights, and explains what was accomplished.
The book is written with the engineering student in mind, to provide an understanding of what they will experience once they join the work force.

This volume was produced in cooperation with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating insider's look at the X-43A program
Curtis Peebles wrote this book about the Hyper-X based on his unique vantage point as NASA project historian. Based on internal and published documents, interviews with project participants and his own personal observations, the book offers a detailed insider's view of one of the most exciting flight research projects in several decades. As befits a book published by an organization of aerospace engineering professionals, this book is highly technical in places. While not an engineering textbook, the author assumes that the reader has a good background in the full range of aerospace technologies. If the sentence "The computational-fluid-dynamics data were used to quantify the ground-to-flight scaling and unsteady-flow phenomena during the dynamic separation." fazes you, this book might not be for you.

For those who are undaunted by the required level of technical knowledge, the reader is rewarded with a detailed but readable story that begins with a background of scramjet research and continues on to Hyper-X design, manufacturing, integration and checkout, and flight operations. The first flight tumbled out of control shortly after release from the B-52, but the second and third flights successfully demonstrated scramjet-powered flight at Mach 6.83 and 9.68 respectively. Peebles provides an excellent description of all the missions as well as the mishap investigation.

There is an adequate number of good photographs in the book. Unfortunately the photographs are reproduced in black and white rather in color. A more significant omission is the absence of line drawings of the vehicles and its systems. At several points in the book, intricate mechanisms are described, but with no supporting illustrations it is difficult for even the intended audience to visualize the systems.

Quibbles about illustrations aside, this book is an outstanding recounting of an exciting and notable project. Those with a professional interest in modern flight research at the leading edge of technology will benefit greatly from reading it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn how to take a critical look an an aircraft design
A great semi-technical flight test guide.Part aircraft design guide, part novel, part flight test guide.Very similar to the aircraft design book by the same author. If you are looking for a step by step part 23 flight test guide, get Kemberlin's book. Then buy this one for another reason. This book, and Stinton's design book foster a critical approach to evaluating an aircraft design. The author shows the reader how to look at an aircraft and see what the issues might be even before the first flight is made.

Stinton's experience is unique amongst flight test and aircraft design authors. All homebuilts designed and flown in the UK must be flight tested.Stinton flew a great many of these aircraft. Some were fantastic designs.Others were not.it is this eclectic flight experience that sets him apart from other authors.I've read his design book and I own this book.I would say about 40% or more of the material is common between them. Both give a good understanding of how to look critically at a design.(a necessity when you've been hired to fly an aircraft that has absolutely no engineering analysis backing up the design)The design book is a bit better for light aircraft designers. The flight test book is a bit better for flight testers.I like them both.

This book also demonstrates low-budget flight test techniques as you won't find a instrumentation system in a replica Nieuport!

Product Description
This book focuses on an area of approximations in applied mathematics known as asymptotic analysis and perturbation theory and the relatively new and powerful technique - multiple scales theory - that rests on these theories. This new theory has been applied to a large number of diverse advanced engineering systems. Engineering analysts and designers will benefit from the simplicity of the concept and applicability of the method. This book is intended to bridge the gap between esoteric mathematical theory and practical, real world applications. The book is organized into six parts. Part I presents the basic concept, foundations, and the techniques of asymptotic analysis, perturbation theory, and multiple scales. Part II treats the important areas of linear systems by the multiple scales theory. Part III covers the basic ideas governing the dynamics of flight vehicles in the atmosphere and in space. Part IV discusses aircraft applications operating within the earth's atmosphere. Space flight applications are presented in Part V, and Part VI presents some related but separate topics in appendices. ... Read more
