Product Description
On 17 December 1903 at Kitty Hawk, NC, the Wright brothers succeeded in achieving controlled flight in a heavier-than-air machine. This feat was accomplished by them only after meticulous experiments and a study of the work of others before them like Sir George Cayley, Otto Lilienthal, and Samuel Langley. The first evidence of the academic community becoming interested in human flight is found in 1883 when Professor J. J. Montgomery of Santa Clara College conducted a series of glider tests. Seven years later, in 1890, Octave Chanute presented a number of lectures to students of Sibley College, Cornell University entitled "Aerial Navigation." This book is a collection of papers solicited from U. S. universities or institutions with a history of programs in Aerospace/Aeronautical engineering. There are 69 institutions covered in the 71 chapters. This collection of papers represents an authoritative story of the development of educational programs in the nation that were devoted to human flight. Most of these programs are still in existence but there are a few papers covering the history of programs that are no longer in operation.A comprehensive treatment of the early beginnings of aerospace education are documented in Part I as well as the rapid expansion of educational programs relating to aeronautical engineering that took place in the 1940s. Part II is devoted to the four schools that were pioneers in establishing formal programs. Part III describes the activities of the Guggenheim Foundation that spurred much of the development of programs in aeronautical engineering. Part IV covers the 48 colleges and universities that were formally established in the mid-1930s to the present. The military institutions are grouped together in the Part V; and Part VI presents the histories of those programs that evolved from proprietary institutions. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Start at Understanding Aerospace Engineering Education
Anniversaries always spark historical publications celebrating whatever anniversary that is in vogue. The centennial of the first flight of the Wright brothers in December 2003 was no exception. This book is one product of that commemoration. It is essentially a collection of papers about the history of aerospace engineering education in the United States, each written by a different author or set of authors, especially focused on institutional history of 69 separate institutions created to train engineers in the mechanics of flight.

The work is divided into six major parts. The first contains a general overview of the origins of aerospace engineering education. Part II focuses on the founding institutions in the field--MIT, the University of Detroit, the University of Michigan, and New York University. Part III explores the Guggenheim Foundation's efforts to further flight since the 1920s. Part IV, by far the largest section of the book, has individual chapters chronologically arranged about the major institutions of higher learning training aerospace engineers. In this section, there are capsule summaries of such stellar engineering schools as Caltech, Auburn University, and Purdue University, to name only a few. In Part V the authors review the role of the military service academies in training aerospace engineers. And to conclude the volume, Part VI contains succinct accounts of training programs evolved from corporations and other propriety institutions such as Boeing and Northrop.

This is a useful work of compilation for bringing together the summaries of these various institutions. There is very little commonality of ingredients from chapter to chapter, and no sense of a single theme or thesis, so anyone using it to build a picture of the discipline will have to be creative in the use of the information. Some articles are referenced, others not. Some contain curricula over time, some do not. None ask overarching historical questions about the development of the aerospace engineering discipline. There is a discernable focus on individuals and heroic research and teaching. There are basic components of any work of non-fiction that are missing, such as an index.

In the end "Aerospace Engineering Education During the First Century of Flight" is very much a history written by and for aerospace engineers. For all its virtues, and there are some, the overview offered here is replete with the linear process of aerospace "progress" to the very great exclusion of any social or cultural factors that might have influenced the evolution of the discipline. There is little of the obscurity of choices about research and training that might have enriched this story. We await a comprehensive and innovative history of this important subdiscipline in engineering education. There is yet to be written for aerospace engineers such a work as C.R. Day's "Education for the Industrial World: The Ecole d'Arts et Mtiers and the Rise of French Industrial Engineering" (MIT Press, 1987), which provides an outstanding case study in the evolution of technological consciousness, or even John Hubbel Weiss's "The Making of Technological Man: The Social Origins of French Engineering Education" (MIT Press, 1982). Even so, this is a moderately useful book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good technical resource, but ignore the last two chapters
This book is a collection of chapters written by various academics and industry representatives.Overall, it is an excellent resource for anyone interested in 3D scanning and reverse engineering, especially as they relate to manufacturing and mechanical CAD/CAM/CAE.Chapters 1 - 4 cover the technological aspects, and do a very good job of it.Because each chapter was contributed by a different group, they are somewhat repetitive, but given the complexity of the topic it's actually useful to get a few different points of view. The only problem with these chapters is that the information is a bit outdated already, but this isn't that surprising given the pace of development in 3D scanning and RE technologies.Of important note is that the book does not cover the so called 3rd generation process of making a parametric CAD solid model from 3D scan data, which is a newer development and is often the best method for mechanical reverse engineering.

Chapters 5 & 6 cover rapid prototyping (RP), which is somewhat off-topic for the premise of the book, but many organizations use reverse engineering and RP together, so it's understandable that the editors included some information about RP technology.

Chapters 7-9 offer various real-world case studies of how 3D scanning has been used by various companies. These 3 chapters were all contributed by a single software vendor in the industry, but generally seem to be impartially written and not just marketing fluff. They serve as useful examples of how different companies make use of 3D scanning/RE.

Unfortunately, the last 2 chapters of the book are not really helpful at all.Chapter 10, Legal Aspects of Reverse Engineering, is especially out of place - it covers software reverse engineering (read: decompiling software to discover its source code).I'm not sure what the editors were thinking when they included this chapter - the book is about industrial RE of physical objects, which has nothing to do with decompiling software. The chapter is at best completely irrelevant and at worst gives the false impression that mechanical RE is akin to software code RE.As for the legal aspects of 3D scanning and mechanical RE, there isn't much case law to refer to, but in general the courts have found that 3D scanning and remodeling of a legally obtained object is legally similar to taking a photograph of an object (Search Meshwerks v. Toyota for a recent decision on the topic). The final chapter on Barriers to Adopting Reverse Engineering isn't particularly helpful either, as it seems to be a general article on capital purchase decisions and has no specific connection to 3D scanning/reverse engineering technology purchases (Chapter 4 does a much better job of informing potential buyers what to look for).

Again, overall I would recommend this book to anyone interested in 3D scanning, and particularly to anyone considering acquiring the technology - just focus on the first four chapters and forget the last 2! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The textbook I wished I had 12 years ago
One reviewer said this book wasn't right for US readers. I can understand this: I went to a UK university, did flight mechanics as a 2nd year undergrad and got mired in thousands of symbols for things.

The only books available to us back in 1995-6 were the excellent Etkin and the superb Stevens & Lewis... BUT both were expensive, used totally different symbology and conventions, and ft / lbs / secs. as units too (we used the SI system). This cost us a lot of time and effort -flight mechanics is about understanding aircraft, not about translating symbols between lecture notes and textbooks. It wasn't helped by the fact that we had a flight dynamics lecturer who neither liked nor understood what he was teaching (he told us!).

But a year or two later, this book came out and it was exactly what we should have used. The book used the same notation as our (British) lecturer had done. Better still, there were clear, step-by-step explanations, no nasty surprises, plenty of worked examples, no cop-outs like 'we intuitively see that...'The writing is clear and simple, no matter which system of symbols you're used to. If you're USA-based, you might be better suited to using Etkin, but if you work in the UK system, buy this book ! ! !

1-0 out of 5 stars Wrong book for the US market
This book itself is okay. But it's not the right book for the US market. This is the first time my professor used this book, he thought it could be an improvement. But he gave up using it completely after a month into the course.

Some of the reference parameters are quite different from US standards, since the author is British. If you are a self-learner in the US, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. ... Read more
