Product Description
The National Aerospace Initiative (NAI) was conceived as a joint effort between the Department of Defense (DOD) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to sustain the aerospace leadership of the United States through the acceleration of selected aerospace technologies: hypersonic flight, access to space, and space technologies. The Air Force became concerned about the NAI's possible consequences on Air Force programs and budget if NAI program decisions differed from Air Force priorities. To examine this issue, it asked the NRC for an independent review of the NAI. This report presents the results of that assessment. It focuses on three questions asked by the Air Force: is NAI technically feasible in the time frame laid out; is it financially feasible over that period; and is it operationally relevant. ... Product Description
Principles of Flight Simulation is a comprehensive guide to flight simulator design, covering the modelling, algorithms and software which underpin flight simulation.

The book covers the mathematical modelling and software which underpin flight simulation. The detailed equations of motion used to model aircraft dynamics are developed and then applied to the simulation of flight control systems and navigation systems. Real-time computer graphics algorithms are developed to implement aircraft displays and visual systems, covering OpenGL and OpenSceneGraph. The book also covers techniques used in motion platform development, the design of instructor stations and validation and qualification of simulator systems.

An exceptional feature of Principles of Flight Simulation is access to a complete suite of software (www.wiley.com/go/allerton) to enable experienced engineers to develop their own flight simulator – something that should be well within the capability of many university engineering departments and research organisations.

  • Based on C code modules from an actual flight simulator developed by the author, along with lecture material from lecture series given by the author at Cranfield University and the University of Sheffield
  • Brings together mathematical modeling, computer graphics, real-time software, flight control systems, avionics and simulator validation into one of the faster growing application areas in engineering
  • Features full colour plates of images and photographs.

Principles of Flight Simulation will appeal to senior and postgraduate students of system dynamics, flight control systems, avionics and computer graphics, as well as engineers in related disciplines covering mechanical, electrical and computer systems engineering needing to develop simulation facilities. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good and necesary overview
I have been working on flight simulation around 10 years.. i think this is a good guide for work in this area.. it covers many differents aspects and refer to differents sources for further reference. Althought it has some detectable errors.. but the general balance is positive.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, some errors and ambiguity
I've worked in flight simulation several times during my career, and am currently back in the field.
I was looking for a good reference for state of the art info on flight simulation and this seemed to meet that requirement.I'm only about a quarter of the way through it so far, and based on that, I feel it was well worth the price. However, I'm a bit disappointed at a few errors I've found, and the fact that I can't seem to find an Errata sheet anywhere on Wiley's website.

The snippets of C code included provide very good illustration of how one might code portions of a simulation, but no one should buy this book with the idea that they will be able to code any type of realistic simulation just from the examples given.I think Stevens and Lewis provide more complete examples of code in their book (Aircraft Control and Simulation).I would also recommend the book by Rolfe and Staples (Flight Simulation)...it doesn't provide code examples, and is a bit dated, but also contains a lot of good background info on flight simulation.

As for this book, Principles of Flight Simulation, I would definitely give it 5-stars if the minor errors get updated in a future printing, or if Wiley at least would put out an Errata section on their website.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is exactley what I looking for
I have several books introducing to the aerodynamics simulation.

but I wanted to have whole comprehensive bible.

because this field requires various theories and understanding about many queues.

for most, this may not the entire one but for sure, this is the guide to

world of flight simulation I expected.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nonlinear Control System
Be prepared with differential manifolds before start with this book. I enjoy the way the author explained his thought flow. If there is more examples it will definite help people from engineering side.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rigorous analysis, Different take on Nonlinear control systems
It is an excellent book to understand the theoretical foundations of nonlinear control systems. Although I have taken 2 graduate level courses in this subject, I have not seen such rigorous analysis in the courses. The books provides the mathematical backbone, which I missed in the courses (which jump straight from dot(x) = f(x), to designing filtered states). Key examples are provided to strengthen some ideas. Equivalents of Reachability and Observability in nonlinear systems are provided with a differential geometric perspective. This is as far as I have come in this book. I guess I will edit my review if my opinion changes further down the lane!

Warning: One needs to be very familiar with concepts of real analysis and differential topology to begin with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Isidori's Magnum Opus
This is simply the best book written on nonlinear control theory. The contents form the basis for feedback linearization techniques, nonlinear observers, sliding mode control, understanding relative degree, nonminimum phase systems, exact linearization, and a host of other topics.A careful reading of this book will provide vast rewards.A fantastic book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Useful
Even though I bought this book back when it was fresh of the printing press, and payed the price for it, I am still glad I bought it. Now with a much more sensible price tag, this is a great book for people, especially students who are or want to do research in this or related area.

As an edited collection of research by the editors and others, it has over two hundred references, and gives you nothing but relevant information from them. The first two chapters of the book, the introduction, and "Aircraft Structural Health and Usage Monitoring" give all the relevant background information you would require if you were just starting or studying in the area. Next the book gives a concise overview of "Operational Load Monitoring Using Optical Fibre [strain] Sensors." The chapter give an insight into current optical fiber strain sensing implementations and methods of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). Following this is a chapter dedicated to SHM with ultrasonic waves. The chapter is predominantly based on detecting acoustic signals with piezoelectric transducers. The next chapter is on of the most useful, especially for those going from NDE to SHM, which is "Signal Processing". Ideally, the section could have been longer, with an important topic such as wavelet analysis being summarised in a couple of pages. To off set this, the section has the largest number of references, so additional material can be easily located. The book concludes with what can be considered case studies which show "Structural Health Monitoring Evaluation Tests."

Overall this is a well written reference book that with supplements could be used as a text book. I would say 4.5 but having to choose between 4 and 5, I have to give it a 5, as it is certainly above a 4.

    Worth the investment.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible book
From a student perspective, this book is harder to read than a foreign language. It is full of equations that have no practical examples and you're stuck with the homework problems that you can't figure out. The examples given in the book do not correlate with the homework problems and I spend most of my time on the internet or sitting in my teacher's room trying to figure out what the book wants. It appears to be a book that assumes you remember everything that you ever learned in all of your classes. The book is too small and it seems that more information could have been included to help students better remember how to find certain values for a set of equations relating to a signal. If you can talk your teacher into excluding this book from the class and just teaching the concepts you'll be better off.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just What I Need
For many years I have taught a graduate/undergraduate pair of courses, EE5811 and EE 5821 in biomedical instrumentation and modeling. The central challenge each semester is an idependent student investigation from concept to method to outcomes. Peer reviewed papers are the principal information sources and this text has a remarkable sense for filling in the gaps for a wide range of engineering and life science curricula.

    Product Description
In placing this book before the public the author wishes it understood
that it is not his intention to produce a scientific work on
engineering.Such a book would be valuable only to engineers of large
stationary engines. In a nice engine room nice theories and scientific
calculations are practical. This book is intended for engineers of farm
and traction engines, "rough and tumble engineers," who have everything
in their favor today, and tomorrow are in mud holes, who with the same
engine do eight horse work one day and sixteen horse work the next day.
Reader, the author has had all these experiences and you will have them,
but don't get discouraged. You can get through them to your entire
    satisfaction.

Don't conclude that all you are to do is to read this book. It will not
make an engineer of you.But read it carefully, use good judgment and
common sense, do as it tells you, and my word for it, in one month, you,
for all practical purposes, will be a better engineer than four-fifths
of the so-called engineers today, who think what they don't know would
not make much of a book. Don't deceive yourself with the idea that what
you get out of this will be merely "book learning." What is said in this
will be plain, unvarnished, practical facts. It is not the author's
intention to use any scientific terms, butplain, everyday field terms.
There will be a number of things you will not find in this book, but
nothing will be left out that would be of practical value to you. You
will not find any geometrical figures made up of circles, curves,
angles, letters and figures in a vain effort to make you understand the
principle of an eccentric. While it is all very nice to know these
things, it is not necessary, and the putting of them in this book would
defeat the very object for which it was intended.Be content with being
a good, practical, everyday engineer, and all these things will come in
    time.
