Book Description
Hardbound. People spend most of their time indoors, and indoor air pollutants can cause both long and short term health effects. Awareness of indoor air pollution as an environmental issue, however, is relatively new. This book has been prepared to offer an up-to-date, comprehensive reference manual on indoor air quality to scientists and professionals active in this area. The intention of the book is to bring together a collection of contributions from specialists in the specific disciplines of indoor air quality, covering all points of view from various angles, from building design and building sciences, to health effects and medical diagnosis, toxicology of indoor air pollutants, and air sampling and analysis. One of the characteristics of this book is the multidisciplinary approach that integrates the expertise of medical doctors, architects, engineers, chemists, biologists, physicists and toxicologists. The resulting product is of great educational v ... Read more

Book Description
With the recent tightening of air quality standards as mandated by the U.S. EPA, has come great pressure on regulatory bodies at all levels of government, along with the industries and groups affected by these standards, to better assess the hazards and risks that result from air pollutants. Risk Assessment and Indoor Air Quality carefully ties together the tools and methodologies of Risk Assessment to the study of indoor air quality. This informative text takes a look at the problem of long-term exposure to low-level concentrations of toxins. In addition tocommonly found toxins, such as chemical fumes from furnishings and carpeting, and indoor use of pesticides, this unique volume discusses risks associated with exposure to indoor allergens and infectious disease pathogens such as Legionnaires Disease.Because few scientific models exist for understanding the dynamics of indoor air quality, Risk Assessment and Indoor Air Quality is an essential resource for all students and professionals involved evaluating, testing and monitoring indoor air quality. ... Description:
One of the most prominent of characteristics of the western United States that affects its meteorology is the complexity of its mountainous terrain. The meteorological Mesoscale Model, version 5 with Chemistry (MM5-Chem), an online-coupled atmospheric chemistry model, was used to investigate the effect of this terrain on a high air pollution event in the free troposphere. The simulations were evaluated by comparisons with data from the North American Regional Reanalysis (NARR). Complex terrain was shown to have an important influence on the vertical transport of air pollutants on the regional scale; emissions from ground level were vertically mixed as high as 5km above sea surface level for the wintertime conditions simulated. The simulations showed that the vertical transport of emissions from the Earth's surface could have a more significant effect on mid and upper level chemical concentrations than chemical production. The vertical transport was caused predominately by terrain forced flow over the mountains' ridge-line and the terrain forced flow was affected by the mountain peak height and the complexity of the terrain downwind. ... Description:
Currently, most local authorities in the UK use well-established Gaussian-type dispersion models to predict the air quality in urban areas. The use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in integrated urban air quality modelling is still in its infancy, despite having an enormous potential in assessing and improving natural ventilation in built-up areas. This study assesses the suitability of a general CFD code (PHOENICS) for use in integrated urban air quality modelling for regulatory purposes. An urban air quality model of a designated air quality management area in the city centre of Glasgow has been developed by integrating traffic flow data for urban road networks, traffic pollutant emission data and a three-dimensional CFD dispersion model of a complex configuration of street canyons. The results are in good agreement with field measurements taken during the continuous monitoring campaign, and show that a general CFD code has indeed the potential for regulatory use. Although this numerical tool has demonstrated satisfactory performance, it is observed that small differences in monitoring station positioning may yield significant variations of the measured mean concentration, due to large values of horizontal and vertical local concentration gradients. Although, at this stage, the accuracy of the developed Glasgow urban air quality model is highly dependent on the experience of its users, it is believed that use of a CFD code (such as PHOENICS) could benefit urban planners, architects, HVAC engineers and all other professionals interested in public health. ... Book Description
This book presents the background and application of receptor models for the source identification and quantitative mass apportionment of airborne pollutants. Over the past decade, receptor models have become an accepted part of the process for developing effective and efficient air quality management plans. Information is provided on the ambient and source sampling and chemical analysis needed to provide the input data for receptor models. Commonly used models are described with examples so that the air quality specialist can see how these models are applied. Recent advances in several areas of the field are presented as well as the perspective of both U.S. Federal and State level air quality managers on how these models fit into the development of a management plan.

The aim of the book is to provide a practical guide to persons who may be given the task of implementing receptor modeling as a part of some air quality management problem. The intention of all the chapter authors is to furnishboth the basic information needed to begin doing receptor modeling as well as some insight into some of the problems related to the use of these models. These tools like any others used in solving complex technological problems are not a panacea, but do represent powerful aids in data analysis that can lead to insights as to how an airshed functions and thus, to effective and efficient air quality management strategies. ... This book will be suitable forresearchers including students, consultants, local authority officers(such as environmental officers), and environmental scientists workingin industrial sectors (chemical, environmental, and transport). Veryfew scientific international conferences specifically address the areaof air pollution in cities and towns. This is despite the growingconcern about the health and environmental impacts that result fromair pollutants in urban areas. The need to have a forum for discussingand exchanging scientific results in this field is hence overwhelming. It is clear from the response of scientists and other experts workingin this area that these UAQ conferences are helping to address thisneed. ... Description:
Currently used dispersion models, such as the AMS/EPA Regulatory Model (AERMOD), process routinely available meteorological observations to construct model inputs. Thus, model estimates of concentrations depend on the availability and quality of meteorological observations, as well as the specification of surface characteristics at the observing site. We can be less reliant on these meteorological observations by using outputs from prognostic models, which are routinely run by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The forecast fields are available daily over a grid system that covers all of the United States. These model outputs can be readily accessed and used for dispersion applications to construct model inputs with little processing. This study examines the usefulness of these outputs through the relative performance of a dispersion model that has input requirements similar to those of AERMOD. The dispersion model was used to simulate observed tracer concentrations from a Tracer Field Study conducted in Wilmington, California in 2004 using four different sources of inputs: (1) onsite measurements; (2) National Weather Service measurements from a nearby airport; (3) readily available forecast model outputs from the Eta Model; and (4) readily available and more spatially resolved forecast model outputs from the MM5 prognostic model. The comparison of the results from these simulations indicate that comprehensive models, such as MM5 and Eta, have the potential of providing adequate meteorological inputs for currently used short-range dispersion models such as AERMOD. ... Description:
To study the impact of emissions at an airport on local air quality, a measurement campaign at the Zurich airport was performed from 30 June 2004 to 15 July 2004. Measurements of NO, NO"2, CO and CO"2 were conducted with open path devices to determine real in-use emission indices of aircraft during idling. Additionally, air samples were taken to analyse the mixing ratios of volatile organic compounds (VOC). Temporal variations of VOC mixing ratios on the airport were investigated, while other air samples were taken in the plume of an aircraft during engine ignition. CO concentrations in the vicinity of the terminals were found to be highly dependent on aircraft movement, whereas NO concentrations were dominated by emissions from ground support vehicles. The measured emission indices for aircraft showed a strong dependence upon engine type. Our work also revealed differences from emission indices published in the emission data base of the International Civil Aviation Organisation. Among the VOC, reactive C"2-C"3 alkenes were found in significant amounts in the exhaust of an engine compared to ambient levels. Also, isoprene, a VOC commonly associated with biogenic emissions, was found in the exhaust, however it was not detected in refuelling emissions. The benzene to toluene ratio was used to discriminate exhaust from refuelling emission. In refuelling emissions, a ratio well below 1 was found, while for exhaust this ratio was usually about 1.7. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Made Sense of It All
This is a terrific, clear explanation of air pollution rules. As a plant manager, I got more useful information from this book than I got in five years of paying attorneys and consultants. It's an easy read and it's easy to find the information you need. In the 700 pages (not 1,500 like somebody else said) Mr. Trzupek makes sense of all of the rules that nobody can understand, gives you weapons to fight with and provides a bunch of resources to use. This is a book I can actually use.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth It
Three hundred pages of generalities, very little specific. 1200 pages of appendix. The book was over price, considering it is really nothing more than a dictionary of air quality compliance and permitting. The chapters and topics over and over suggest the topic at hand is complicated and changing and to variable to go into specifics. For 90 dollars and 1500 pages I want to know specifics for different processes, at different levels, in different regions, in different states. On page three he suggests that if you are looking for a book that covers every possible contingency this book is not for you...he is correct...yet the book should be renamed to 'If You Are In Business, You Can't Afford Not To Hire Someone That Can Understand Air-Quality Compliance...But Not Write A Comprehensive Text On The Subject in 1500 Pages or Less". ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview
This book provides a good overview of air permitting and good explanations of many of the issues involved. I don't think it "...shows facility air quality managers, regulatory agency staff, and consultants how to prepare permit applications for Title V Federal Operating Permits or for New Source Review (NSR)or Prevention of Significant Deterioration (PSD) perrmits for new or modified sources of air pollutant emissions, and how to comply with permits obtained." The differences between different facilities and states are too great for one book to do all that. Most books providing advice about air permitting imagine the reader is working for some "Mega-firm" with a team of eager co-workers. They might prove more useful if they focused on the poor guy locked alone in a room with six inches of forms and a bad calculator. Still, Leonard knows his material and provides many useful insights into the permit process. He writes clearly, has organized his material well and does a better job with a huge topic than any other book I have found.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book on Air Quality Permitting in the U.S.
I used this book last year, as a text book in a class at UCLA that Iteach.I am also using it this year. The book was very well received bythe students.I found it very useful to teach from, and as a referencebook. It is the only book of its kind, as far as I know. Thanks, Leon! ... Read more
