A Doctor's Opinion. Fraught with bias this book cannot meet the standard it holds to others.
As part of my work, I have taken part in numerous trials for the NIH.Some of these involved integrative medicine and as such I became acquainted with a number "alternative medicine" physicians.In my experience, western medicine and alternative medicine have similar distribution of personality types among doctors. The quacks and greedy to the brilliant and genuine exist in both camps.Therefore good and evil can be selectively and easily found and proven in all disciplines.

I am a skeptic by nature and felt the need to look up and review the references listed in this book.They were unquestionably cherry picked to support a predetermined bias. This serves no useful purpose as it dose not seek to tell the truth.What actually helps patients improve should be the ultimate goal whether it be medicine or natural medicine.Again, my experience, and the scientific evidence proves that there is both harmful and efficacious treatments in use today by natural and western medical practitioners.

But hospitals and doctors have a problem too. The scientific evidence often conflicts with their ideology. They could address this problem in several ways. Hospitals could modify their specific ideological beliefs on the basis of scientific evidence. Doctors could question whether ideology has had an inappropriate impact on the promulgation and validation of their recommendations. Both those approaches would involve a threat to cherished and often dogmatic beliefs. They, therefore, have taken a different approach. They've tried to claim "evidence based practice." while ignoring scientific evidence.

Medicine, is a pragmatic, probabilistic activity. It requires that decisions be made on the basis of available evidence, within a limited time.Particularly evidence-based medicine as it is currently practiced, aspires to a scientific standard of proof.

But medicine, is an art of probabilities, or at best, a science of infinite uncertainty.One can better practice medicine by using other evidentiary standards in addition to the scientific.To employ only the current scientific standard of proof is inappropriate, if not impossible; furthermore, its application in medicine is fraught with bias as is this book.

One of the best ways to determine relative risk of a given specialty in health care is to look at the malpractice insurance rates.My counterparts in alternative medicine enjoy insurances rates so low as to shame every medical doctor into silence if they were honest about its true implication and meaning.When compared to my premiums from the same insurer, the alternative doctor pays tens of thousands of dollars less per year.Granted, this only applies to safety, not efficacy, but the fact is that they simply win hands down when it comes to overall safety.Not to mention that patient satisfaction is rated much higher than medical treatments.

Bottom line there can exist a balance where beneficial therapies from all sources operate in an integrated setting.We must dispel the myth that this book seeks to perpetuate and find what works best.

Nice to read the other side of the marketing stories, especially it's about our health
I admire the author's conviction and courage to write against the crowd and resourceful merchants selling false hope with billions of ad money, though I dont think her book will be effective to convince users of Alternative Medicine that they are suckers indeed. Afterall, AM is now such a mammoth cult of huge followers whose faith cant be shaken by a book or two. Neverthelss, I am obliged to state that some data, in particular the history and pharmacology on Chinese Traditional Medicine, is not accurate. Despite the minor defects, it is still readable and informative. Recommended!

Best book for laymen
I became interested in quackery more than 30 years ago, when I was a pharmaceutical scientist (not a pharmacist).Ms. Shapiro's book may be the best written for the layman (I have read the others; I used to think Kurt Butler's "Consumer's Guide" was the best- it remains useful despite its age).Shapiro excels at comprehending quackery, and writing in terms that non-technical people can understand.

It all depends how you use natural treatments.This book is so inaccurate, natural treatments are the only treatments I would use.The author has an axe to grind, maybe she tried a wrong treatment, but most treatments from reputable suppliers are good value, why would you kill yourself with chemotherapy?There are no good tests on natural treatments as they do not earn big money for 'big pharma', so no-one is able to say that they do not work.The best advice is to try, as I did.Follow the advice from the supplier for 3 months.

Suckers is an excellent book that critically reviews the many problems with all forms of alternative medicine. Any person using or considering the use of any form of alternative medicine (CAM,integrative, complementary, etc.)should read this well researched book. It covers a broad range of ineffective practices, nicely exposing the weaknesses of those practices, many of which could be dangerous and contribute to the delay of the application of an appropriate therapy. Unlike other excellent books exposing the problems of alternative medicines (SNAKE OIL SCIENCE, TRICK OR TREATMENT)this book covers the increasing use of alternative medicine practices in infants and children, practices which I believe should be considered malpractice or even criminal. I am not aware of any alternative medicine practice that could be justified for infants or children.

Mark Clifton is the greatest science fiction writer ever. After reading his collection, I pretty much gave up on sci-fi since, in comparison to his work, so much in the genre seemed contrived and devoid of substance.

Hisbackground was in personel which provided him with the opportunity tointerview 250,000 people in his career.This comes accross brilliantly inall the characters which populate his stories, everyone of them infusedwith a richness and truth that is rare in all forms of fiction.His worksare perfect examples of the medium, meaning that they could not be told inany form other than sci-fi.

Please give him a try.If you do pick upthe collection, then I highly recommend the last two stories, "WhatNow, Little Man?" and "Hang Head, Vandal!"The former storyimpressed me with the most profound sense of the meaning(andmeaninglessness) of life that I have ever encountered in literature.He issuch an underated and unknown master of sci-fi, it would really be greatfor some of you to discover him as I did.And if you like what you see,then you might want to try one of his few novels, "When They Came fromSpace."Don't let the cheesy title fool you.It's a wonderful satireand contains an inspired debate on the differences between faith in scienceand faith in miracles. ... Biomass-derived black carbon, charcoal or "biochar", as it is nowadays called, can be used as a soil amendment to improve nutrient retention and availability and therefore increase crop yields. Such a use of biochar is a significant advance over conventional organic matter management, as the biochar is more stable in soil and is better able to retain nutrients. In combination with sustainable biomass production, such a biochar sequestration can be carbon negative and therefore be used to actively remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, with obvious significance for mitigation of climate change. Biochar production can also be combined with bioenergy production through the use of the gases that are given off in the pyrolysis process. Bad title, great writing.
The title of this book is somewhat misleading - the stories within (with one exception) are not really (in my opinion) "science fiction". All are alternative history stories, although somewhat atypical of the genre. It seems that some authors have alternative timeline theories and write stories to support them. The authors in this book use alternate timelines as frameworks for good stories. Being a fan of both SciFi and alternative history, I gave this book a read and was quite impressed with the quality of the writing. I'm not familiar with all of the authors, but will be looking out for their other works. "The Winterberry" stood out. At first you don't see the connection with alternate history, but eventually you catch on, with sad realization. Worthwhile reading for all.

Very Entertaining
A highly entertaining series of short stories. The stories in this book are very original and are not reprinted in many other collections of Alternate History, with the exception of two. If you love alternate history, I encourage you to read, if not buy this book.

The social sciences in Asia, like most other disciplines, were introduced by the West and continue to look towards them for inspiration, affirmation and legitimacy. There is now a growing awareness amongst scholars and students about the need for developing Asia-centric social sciences in order to better appreciate Asian realities. Written against this background, this book addresses a set of problems surrounding the state of the social sciences in Asia. It contextualizes these problems by pointing to the historical and continuing dominance over Asian social science discourses by Western paradigms and concepts. This report examines the state of knowledge and the future promise of guayule Parthenium argentatum Gray, a little known shrub native to the desert of southwest Texas and northern Mexico that was a commercial source of natural rubber during the first half of this century.

This perennial shrub thrives in arid conditions and can survive heavy frosts. Guayule, after thorough drying, has been found to contain as much as 26% rubber. This rubber can be used to make vehicle tires or any other item currently made with natural rubber. It is a promising plant for use in reforestation of desert fringe lands and is easy to grow. Extraction of the rubber is not technically difficult; in fact, small-scale household extraction is possible. The plant can be cut down to the ground and will grow again from the roots.

The book covers: background and history, botanical information, rubber extraction, agricultural production, rubber quality, economics, research needs, selected readings and recommendations.

When guayule grows actively, it produces little or no rubber. If the plant is stressed, growth slows and the products from photosynthesis are diverted into rubber production. Science and Health
"God's Perfect Child" is a powerful expose of Christian Science. Christian Science Reading Rooms are ubiquitous downtown in cities, and they look inoffensive. They teach positive thinking, an inclusive view of Deity ("Father-Mother God"), they have male and female readers on Sundays... on the surface, it looks good. Beneath its sentimental exterior, there is a decrepit interior. Caroline Fraser goes in-depth about institutional crises after Mary Baker Eddy died, children who died from the lack of necessary medical care (from ailments such as cancer and meningitis), the appalling conditions of Christian Science nursing homes (such as Arden Wood in San Francisco), where nurses are reprimanded for feeding the elderly who cannot feed themselves. Fraser connects Christian Science with Scientology, as well as its more benevolent offshoots of Religious Science and Unity. She also connects it with the self-help movement of Marianne Williamson (The Gift of Change: Spiritual Guidance for Living Your Best Life),A Course in Miracles: Combined Volume,and Dr. Andrew Weil (Why Our Health Matters: A Vision of Medicine That Can Transform Our Future) She also tackles Mary Baker Eddy's abusive, controlling personality.

"God's Perfect Child" is an engrossing, powerful book. It's a perfect companion for Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (Authorized, Study Edition) Christian Science is an All-American take on Christianity, and this book is excellent.

A Harvard Graduate?
It is sad, yet predictable that a person whose career has never found success has played upon the hype and naivety of the general population. I would expect more from a person who possesses a PHD from an elite university; however, it should not come as a shock to most that this author published a book based on fallacies and sensationalism, seeing as she has never found respect in her own field of study (Literature).

If you believe all Muslim extremists, and those who bombed the US on 9/11, are representative of the Islamic tradition, then by all means buy this book, which similarly portrays a handful of extreme behavior as emblematic of the Christian Science religion.

Excellent book
Very well written, exhaustive study of Christian Science from it's inception as a strange little sect to the present "cult of respectability". After I read this book, I felt like I knew everyting I needed to know about this odd religion.

Factual and very well written.
As a child of a mother and grandmother who were rabid Christian Scientists and whoabused me with their denial of all my bad feelings (error), both physical and emotional, this book was of great interest to me.

I can attest that everything I read was fact, regarding CS beliefs and ways of "denying" sickness, pain and unpleasantness.This author obviously did her homework and knows of what she speaks.

For anyone in recovery from Christian Science or anyone who just wants the "facts", this is an excellent book.

In my opinion, this author was factual and possibly overly fair to this dangerous religious cult.

Also, in my opinion, Mary Baker was mentally ill, but highly charismatic, so was able to found a "religion" based on her personal (mentally ill) beliefs.

Not a typical CS experience
Christian Science is a religion that one must make their own. There are no rules about seeking medical attention or information as the author implies. Yes, the CS textbook is old. It was written in the 19th century with ideas pertinent to that era, but the ideas, the principles, are what is important in Christian Science. I lived a very happy and healthy Christian Science childhood. The experiences of extremists must not be used to color the perception of Christian Science or Christian Scientists in general. ...
