Incomplete field guide for vacationing naturalist
Includes multiple color photographs of certain species, and lacks any color photographs of ~1/3 of species described.Species lacking color photos are represented by black and white line drawings of head and in some cases the entire body.Would not recommend for a casual visitor to the region.

Excellent field guide
This book is perfect for anyone interested in herps in the Maya Forest. Complementary to Campbell's field guide, but also includes great line drawings, range maps, and characteristics to distinguish from similar species. Also, better photos than in Campbell's guide. If I were to buy one field guide for the area, I'd choose this over Campbell's.

Very useful

The standard by which all others should be judged
This book is the yardstick that all other field guides should be measured against. Detailed and concise, Hammerson gives an excellent account of Colorado herpetofauna. I have two copies, one for my car and one for home.

For those only mildly interested in snakes, lizards, frogs and other 'creeping things', this book will change your life's direction forever! The first edition of this book was a treat: a field guide to the herpetofaunaof Colorado, complete with photos, descriptions and distribution maps. Iwas highly pleased with it, and looking forward to the release of thesecond edition (due out in 1998, I think). The wait was worth it! Bad Kindle formatting
This review is for the Kindle formatting, not for the novel itself.Unfortunately the publisher has decided that the author should be alphabetized on the Kindle by his first name instead of his last name.Most of the Western world prefers to list authors by last name, but this publisher must be trying out something new.

Still in love

Still in love with Ichthyandar
When I was 10 year old, my brother gave it to me as a gift  on my birthday. I fell in love with Ichthyandar, and his world.
Years later, and halfway around the world, I am still smitten. I scoured local and online bookstores trying to find an English version of the book a few years ago. The one I read as a young girl was translated in Bengali. I finally found it in a little 2nd hand online bookstore in MN.
I highly recommend this SciFi/ fairy tale to anyone with an open mind.

Ichthyander, 'The Human Merman', 'Prince of the Sea'
"The Amphibian" is such a beautiful book. It is enchanting and absorbing concerning the fascinating, yet sad, life story of Ichthyander the Amphibian. Ichthyander is such a winsome character. He's loveably sweet and cute (and, of course, very handsome!). Plus, he's kind, and very sensitive. You'd want to give him a big hug and say 'Everything will be just fine. We love you just as you are -- gills and all!" It's a pity in the story that he is disliked and misunderstood by the main creep, the villain Don Pedro Zurita, and practically everybody else. One cannot help feel sorry for Ichthyander.

In the section "A Day of Ichthyander's", the reader gets to see how happy he is being in the water, and among the sea creatures. One can easily imagine hearing his laughter of delight when the dolphins arrive to play with him under the warm sun. Ichthyander is really a human merman: the 'Prince of the Sea' --- if there ever was one. The only thing he's missing is a fishtail where his legs are. Not to sound sexist, "The Amphibian" can be considered the male version to "The Little Mermaid". By the way, the book actually gives us the real meaning for Ichthyander's unusual name. They are Greek stem words for "fish" (ichthy-) and "man" (ander or andr). Thus combined, Ichthyander's name is actually 'Fish Man'. He is a 'manfish'; or merman. A human merman, that is.

"The Amphibian" was written about 1928, before the age of snorkeling and scuba diving. Belayev, in describing Ichthyander's undersea ventures, gives some interesting descriptions of undersea life. Had Belayev lived a bit longer, he would have seen his prevision of mankind mastering the ocean be realized. No, people wouldn't be literal amphibians. But people would be using aqualungs to explore underwater. The early aqualungs came about in the mid-1940's during World War II. By then, Belayev was already dead, having passed away in 1942. Also had Belayev lived, he would have seen this famous book of his get turned into a magnificent Russian science fiction film classic, "The Amphibian Man" (1961). There are some changes to the story. But, nevertheless, it's an amazing film. Belayev, himself, would have been pleased.

And if Ichthyander really existed, he would have enough friends, as there are so many scuba diving enthusiasts the world over. Including, perhaps, the late great Jacques Yves Cousteau. At least Ichthyander's new friends wouldn't be scared of him as most divers pretty much have similar underwater gear. -- Oh! And I would have been his friend, too! I've never scuba dived; but I love swimming!

I purchased both an original out-of-print copy of "The Amphibian" (from Amazon[.com] Z-shops in October), with a drawing of Ichthyander riding his beloved dolphin, Leading, on the jacket cover; and, this month, the reissued edition of the book, with Ichthyander on the cover brandishing a dagger. It was the reissued one I took back-and-forth in my travels. I didn't want to lose my out-of-print copy. That edition stays in my library at home.

I recommend as an excellent companion piece to this book the movie "The Amphibian Man", which "The Amphibian" is based. Both the movie and book are excellent. But get the DVD version of "The Amphibian Man", for the picture quality is visually stunning and better. ... Read more

Lots of cool facts on Toads - also a FRA 2008- 2009 book
I found this book because it is one of the 2008 - 2009 Florida Readers Association children's books. But this is one cool book on toads and frogs. The book is broken up in the 1 season in the life of a toad and has beautiful poems on each page. The illustrations are nice and well done. At the bottom of 98% of the pages are facts on toads and frogs but mostly on toads. I learned a lot and would be perfect for any child who is interested in toads and frogs.

The poetry is beautiful... here is one of the shorter ones and ones I liked called a summer day: A game with sun, I play all day. Sun sneaks up close, I dance away. Sun's breath flares hot. Sun's touch can scorch. But I am saf, beneath the porch!

Birder/Botanist reviews the book
A good set of lists, with location, for the various natural species found in Big Bend. Unfortunately drawings are not to scale and are not near the plant descriptions. The decriptions do not include any identifying characteristics such as bundles and number of needles, etc. The drawings are in black and white. It would be difficult to take with you as it is not eay to identify items by the descriptions and or drawings. You would need a plant book and bird book and tree book all in color to help you.

A good start
This field guide give a good general introduction to Big Bend, but is disappointing when it is time to go deeper.Also, there is almost nothing on the geology of the region, a topic that deserves attention.

Functional and exciting!
I've been to Big Bend National Park several times. But this book introduced some plants and animals that I have seen, but not given much notice to. That will change on my next visit.

Nature boy, this book's for you
Naturalist's Big Bend is a comprehensive overview of the flora and fauna of the Big Bend National Park region in Texas.Big Bend is unique for a couple of reasons.First, because the US/Mexico border dips south there, many species are found in the US only in this region.Secondly, as the climate changed following the last ice age, other species found themselves islanded in the cooler mountain ecosystems as the plains around them became deserts.These "sky islands" hold unique flora and fauna that has remained isolated for thousands of years.

Authors Wauer and Fleming have comprehensive first-hand knowledge of the park that comes through in every chapter.The book provides the advantage not only of their expertise but of their access to many unpublished Park Service and other reports and surveys of the park.The bibliography is the definitive go-to guide for anyone wishing to research any aspect of Big Bend's ecosystem.However, for a more personal tour of the park, you might prefer For All Seasons: A Big Bend Journal by author Wauer.

The book makes an excellent reference for the knowledgeable biologist or biology buff planning, enjoying, or remembering a visit to Big Bend National Park.Casual tourists will find the detail overwhelming and the illustrations miserly.With a bigger budget, this could have been a stunning illustrated field guide.As it is, most species rely on description alone for identification.There are a few black-and-white plates of plants, a limited number of fascinating black-and-white photos of animals, and a select group of stunning color photos that illustrate the diverse habitats found within the park.

Good general naturalist's info
My husband and I both found this useful and interesting for our recent weeklong trip to Big Bend.I would recommend it more as preparatory reading before the trip, or evening reading at your room or campsite while in the park, than as a guide to specific areas or species.Also it is best used with oher books accompanying it rather than relying on it alone, such as hiking, lizard, flower, or birding book too, depending on your interests.The bibiography uses up about the last quarter of this rather slim book.So you may want to get it way ahead of your trip then order more books from the bibliography or elsewhere. ...
