Book Description

Quality assurance (QA) in chemical measurement is one of the major challenges in the work field of chemists. It is hard for the beginner to find information on all those topics related to QA. This book contains a compilation from different areas which deal with QA. Topics covered in this book include: Accreditation - ISO 17025, Certification - ISO 9000, Proficiency Testing, Basic Statistics, Measurement Uncertainty, Glossary / Institutions, Fit for the purpose (Philosophy), Quality Manual, Validation of Methods, Accreditation vs. Certification, GLP, Calibration - Detection Limit, Reference Materials, Control Charts, Metrology/Traceability, TQM and Cost of Quality.

Standards such as ISO 17025, accreditation, measurement uncertainty amongst many others are topics which are often not covered in university classes. Especially first time employees or those switching to the field of analytical chemistry measurements are stressed by many special terms and requirements, they have not heard of before. Sometimes it might be necessary to introduce other newcomers to the field with some startup information.

Book Description
Spreadsheets provide one of the most easily learned routes to scientific computing. This book uses Excel®, the most powerful spreadsheet available, to explore and solve problems in general and chemical data analysis. It follows the usual sequence of college textbooks in analytical chemistry: statistics, chemical equilibria, pH calculations, titrations, and instrumental methods such as chromatography, spectrometry, and electroanalysis. The text contains many examples of data analysis, and uses spreadsheets for numerical simulations and testing analytical procedures. It treats modern data analysis methods such as linear and nonlinear least squares in great detail, as well as methods based on Fourier transformation. It shows how matrix methods can be powerful tools in data analysis, and how easily these are implemented on a spreadsheet. It describes in detail how to simulate chemical kinetics on a spreadsheet. It also introduces the reader to the use of VBA, the macro language of Microsoft Office, which lets the user import higher-level computer programs into the spreadsheet. ... Read more

I'd give it 5 stars, but I've only used about 3 pages thus far.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to use Excel in Analytical Chemistry by Robert de Levie
Excellent book setting out applications in Chemistry using Excel.Well chosen examples embracing spectroscopy, chromatography, electrochemistry, kinetics and acid-base theory illustrate the ease of minipulation of data via Excel. The section on Fourier Transform I really liked, and this is followed by a good coverage of noise filtering and deconvolution.

3-0 out of 5 stars Didactic and academic
This is a book which wold like to be a text book and not a popular one. No CD or disk with the exampels is provide. Only the macros could be downloaded from the web. This book contain many exampels. Most of the exampels are in the sort of instructions i.e.1. open a new spreadsheet 2. enter the label..3.In row 11, starting with cell A11 enter the labels pH, [H+]....

15.anchor the graph on cell b1,... etc.

The point is that there are much words in this book and less figures which show the Exell worksheet after each/everal instruction. That make this book to be less fraindly then other books on Ecell. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative but broad
An informative book that covers a wide range of topics in chemometrics.About a third of the book deals with statistics, giving a good review to signal processing, ANOVA, t-tests, etc.For someone that wanted a book dealing only with chemometrics, it is disappointing to find a big portionof the book dedicated to basic statistics.A lot of topics are covered butnot all in much detail. For example, there are 3 pages on SIMCA, 4 pageson PCR and PLS.There are more details when you get into the sections onneural networks and fuzzy theory. The examples are OK but not always easyto follow if you are not familiar with a particular method because stepsare skipped. This book is a great overview of chemometrics-useful torefresh memories or get new ideas for data treatment- but needs to besupplemented with additional resources to learn more any one particularmethod.Fortunately the author includes a "general reading"section at the end of each chapter which provides references for books withmore details. ... Book Description
In the recent past quantitative chemical analysis textbook writers included selected experiments to complete and complement the text and thus give instructors a choice to select the experiments to be performed by students in quantitative analysis course. On the other hand, this is not so for courses in instrumental analysis which is a sequential course to quantitative analysis. This is, perhaps, due to the numerous instrumental techniques that have been developed over the years for chemical analysis. In its stead, textbooks on experiments in instrumental analysis are common, and these are as diversified as the topics covered in lecture courses. Most of the experimental topics covered, especially, in quantitative analysis, lean heavily on determination of materials or compounds of inorganic chemistry origin. This seems to be the tradition with only a few exceptions. However, recently, textbooks on quantitative analysis have emerged and continue to emerge, without any experimental section. This is not quite surprising though, since many instructors nowadays, tend to design their own experiments to suit and complement their lecture materials. On the other hand, the trend in the production of books on instrumental analysis experiments has remained the same. The objective of this book is therefore two fold. One is to design a reasonably comprehensive laboratory text that embodies both areas of analytical chemistry. The other is to shy away from the tradition of making quantitative analysis experiments lean too heavily on inorganic materials. To this end, several topics ranging from inorganic to organic materials are included in this laboratory text book.A new element is also introduced in this book. That is, students are exposed throughout the book to the analysis of compounds of pharmaceutical relevance. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A too much teorical book
Who consults the index of this book may be sure of finding there all the aspects of quality control, from quality assurance to mathematical aspects rarely found on books of this purpose (like "Data Filtering" or"Furrier Transforms of Data"). Whatever, all this mathematicalaspects have their development of a very theorical way, with a very smallnumber of examples. If we wish to tell in other way, this book is not anindicated one to implementation of a quality control, being in fact verymathematical "strong" in presentation of some concepts (alwayswithout examples). There's no necessity of demonstrations not even ofmathematical integers even in the aplication of some advanced concepts ofstatistic. It has a good chapter about sampling, in the diverse phisicalforms, and after a huge chapter about "data analisys" where, withso many themes and so mathematical material, none of them is very wellexplained making impossible any pratic aplication. A more correct name tothis book would be "Further Analysis in Quality Control" or" Advanced Subjects in Quality Control." The sub-chapter about Filtration of Noise, between others, seems very mathematical being lots ofothers simpler aspects to ilustrate. For being a small book, even thecomplex is detailed. ...
