5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect introductory text in anthropology
This book provides helpful insights into the four fields of anthropology: physical, socio-cultural, linguistic, and archaeology. The book begins with a look at the development of Homo sapiens and how H. sapiens has come to populate the world. The book then delves into the topics of political structures, religion, psychology, economics, linguistics, etc. One of the most intriguing aspects of this book is that it discusses the many specialties within anthropology, including forensic anthropology, medical anthropology, and paleoanthropology.

I highly recommend this book to those who wish to gain an understanding of the many fields of anthropology. Whether you are reading this book for leisure or as a student, you should find this to be and enjoyable and informative text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seems an unbiased attempt at basic anthropological issues
This was an excellent introduction to the world of anthropology, with an attempt to remain culturally-fair with all topics touched upon, including its example of Christianity being "not perfect" by pointing out some of the problems introduced as a result of adopting Chrisitianity over another religious following. It prepared the reader for further studies in anthropology quite well, although (probably since I have already read more in-depth books in the field) it left me somewhat bored with the basic level of writing used. Would highly recommend this book for anyone wishing to be introduced to the very fascinating and diverse field of anthropology!!! ... Read more

This book is great for first-time anthropology students; it teaches basic as well as advanced concepts without seeming overly preachy or didactic. Book Description

Seeing Anthropology continues to be the only cultural anthropology text available that allows for easy integration of ethnographic films into the introductory cultural anthropology course.

This text truly incorporates films within the text by blending textbook content with sixteen ethnographic film clips that are put in the hands of students. One reviewer says, “The greatest strengths of this text are its unique and skillful use of film clips to enhance student learning…I can think of no better way to extend student learning in anthropology than the use of films.”

5-0 out of 5 stars A Small, Concise, but Complete Introduction to the Field
This small book is intended to be a rapid and concise introduction to basic ideas that form the central concepts of cultural anthropology. The format of the book is to have a short chapter on each of the major aspects of anthropology such as: culture, religion, politics, economics, kinship, marriage, and capitalism.

Each subject is given a few pages of discussion (around ten) and then a bibliography for further reading. In these few pages, the reader will grasp the central ideas that represent the current thinking in the field.

It has been successfully used as a textbook by making this the cental theme of the class, but then supplementing the study with a significant amount of outside reading. This is the third edition of this book. it has several sections expanded to reflect greater depth in areas like neoliberalism, transnational citizenship, human rights, and so on. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great introductory book
I bought this book for a lower-division anthropology class, and found it one of the few books used for college that i actually enjoyed reading. The writing is clear and straightforward, and the book has many maps, pictures, tables, and diagrams for understanding major points and for visual stimulation. Besides the evolution of modern humans from primate ancestors, the book also provides an introduction to genetics, primate behavior, important archaeological finds, human variation and adaptations, and more.I'm not an anthropologist so I can't attest to the accuracy of the book, but as a biology student I enjoyed it thoroughly and recommend it. 5-0 out of 5 stars A newly updated and expanded fourth edition
Now in a newly updated and expanded fourth edition, "Research Methods In Anthropology: Qualitative And Quantitative Approaches" by H. Russell Bernard (Professor of Anthropology, University of Florida) is a basic, comprehensive, 803-page introductory textbook on the research methods used in anthropology today. Written in a thoroughly 'reader friendly' conversational style that combines rigorous scientific methodology with Professor Bernard's wry sense of humor and experienced-based common sense, this new edition of "Research Methods In Anthropology" has an extensive bibliography and copious real-world examples, as well as sections on computer-based interviewing methods, management of electronic field notes, recording equipment and voice recognition software, text analysis, and the collection/analysis of visual materials. Ideal for college level courses in anthropology, "Research Methods In Anthropology" is also to be strongly recommended as accessibly informative for non-specialist general readers with an interest in anthropological research.

2-0 out of 5 stars Long, Repetitive and Bland
I find this book, though filled with decent (not excellent) content to be very long and bland. The author continually repeats himself within chapters, extending the length and making it almost confusing to follow, not reinforcing. This is not exciting, neither in writing style nor content.

Book Description

An ideal complement to standard anthropology texts or as a stand-alone text/reader, the best-selling Conformity and Conflict continues to offer an in-depth look at anthropology as a powerful way to study human behavior and events.

The 37 articles cover a broad range of theoretical perspectives and demonstrate basic anthropological concepts. The twelfth edition retains the accessibility of the previous editions and the view that anthropology provides a fascinating perspective on the human experience.

The twelfth edition has been shaped by the current concerns in both anthropology and American society, including globalization, the study of women's lives, race and ethnicity, and the practical applications of anthropology and the ways it leads to everyday careers.

The newly revised table of contents reflects the suggestions of Conformity and Conflict users. Thirty percent of the readings are either revised or entirely new to this edition.Nine new articles appear in this edition of Conformity and Conflict (Readings 7, 12, 15, 18, 22, 25, 29, 32, 33), three of which were expressly commissioned for this edition (12, 29, 25).Four articles (5, 28, 31 and 35) have been updated for this edition.

More attention is paid to cultural ecology, to the impact of the world market and world systems on human social life, and to human change in increasingly large and complex societies. An entirely NEW section on globalization includes three new articles that introduce readers to key concepts -how popular culture spreads to different societies, the processes by which cultural artifacts, social structures, and how ideas are adopted and changed as they reach new societies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Anthro Book I've Read
Definately, this is one of the best Anthropology-oriented books I've read, academically or for pleasure. The fact that it is mostly exerpts from actual ethnographies helps to get points across while still more than keeping my attention.

Well Done

5-0 out of 5 stars School Book
got this book for an anthro class at my University.its basically just a compilation of short stories (3 pages - 10 pages) about case studies in anthro.its an easy read and actually was pretty interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection, a standard in anthro -- and the 12th is DIFFERENT from the11th
I've used this collection off and on for years in teaching Introduction to Cultural Anthropology. It's a great book, a real standard in anthropology.Honestly, I think the relevance and quality of the essays varies from edition to edition.I liked the 11th more than the 12th.Sometimes a 'favorite' essay gets replaced; and then in the next edition it is returned.Go figure.

I note that sellers of used copies are claiming that the 11th edition is virtually the same as the 12th, that nearly every article is the same.THIS IS NOT TRUE!!!!!!!!I can't tell you how often I have students believe this and buy the 11th edition, then struggle all semester because they don't have the chapters I've assigned.Only someone who has never used the book in class, either as a student or a teacher, would make such an egregiously wrong claim. So, if you're looking for a nice, cheap, used version, make sure that you buy the edition being used in your class. Most teachers will not assign every single chapter in the book; most select 8-12 chapters, and they can well be the chapters that are not in the older edition.

Caveat Emptor ...
