Excerpt: American University (AU) is a private United Methodist-affiliated research university in Washington, D.C. The main campus is located at the intersection of Nebraska and Massachusetts Avenues at Ward Circle, straddling the Spring Valley, Wesley Heights, and American University Park neighborhoods of Northwest. Roughly 6,000 undergraduate students and 3,912 graduate students are currently enrolled. Though there is sometimes confusion, American University is separate from most "American Universities" around the world. It is served by the Tenleytown-AU station on the Washington Metro subway line, which is located roughly one mile from the main campus in the neighborhood of Tenleytown. AU is a member of the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area, allowing students to enroll in courses offered by other member institutions and students at other member institutions to enroll in courses at AU. A member of the Division I Patriot League, its sports teams compete as the American University Eagles. The American University The School of International Service An inspiration for the founding of American University was a letter written by George Washington in which he expressed a desire for a "national university" to be located in the nation's capital. The university was established in the District of Columbia by an Act of Congress on February 24, 1893, primarily due to the efforts of Methodist Bishop John Fletcher Hurst. It, like most of the universities in the District of Columbia (Georgetown University, The George Washington University, Howard University, Gallaudet University, and The Catholic University of Americ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=80734 ... Excerpt: Arnold Arboretum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Sign at the main gateThe Arboretum was founded in 1872 when the President and Fellows of Harvard College became trustees of a portion of the estate of James Arnold (17811868). In 1842, Benjamin Bussey (17571842), a prosperous Boston merchant and scientific farmer, donated his country estate Woodland Hill and a part of his fortune to Harvard University "for instruction in agriculture, horticulture, and related subjects". Bussey had inherited land from fellow patriot Eleazer Weld in 1800 and further enlarged his large estate between 1806 and 1837 by acquiring and consolidating various farms that had been established as early as the seventeenth century. Harvard used this land for the creation of the Bussey Institute, which was dedicated to agricultural experimentation. The first Bussey Institute building was completed in 1871 and served as headquarters for an undergraduate school of agriculture. Sixteen years after Bussey's death, James Arnold, a New Bedford, Massachusetts whaling merchant, specified that a portion of his estate was to be used for "...the promotion of Agricultural, or Horticultural improvements". In 1872, when the trustees of the will of James Arnold transferred his estate to Harvard University, Arnolds gift was combined with 120 acres (0.49 km) of the former Bussey estate to create the Arnold Arboretum. In the deed of trust between the Arnold trustees and the College, income from Arnolds legacy was to be used for establishing, developing and maintaining an arboretum to be known as the Arnold Arboretum which "shall contain, as far as practicable, all the trees shrubs ... either indigenous or exotic, which can be raised in the open air of West Roxbury". The historical mission o... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1672512 ... Read more

Chapters: Bartlett Arboretum and Gardens, Dinosaur State Park and Arboretum, Stamford Museum and Nature Center, Connecticut College Arboretum, New Canaan Nature Center, Highstead Arboretum. Not illustrated. Excerpt: The Bartlett Arboretum and Gardens contains 91 acres (37 hectares) of parkland, gardens, and landscapes that focus on the regional plants, ecology and character of Southwestern New England. The Arboretum is open and accessible to the public every day of the year. It is located at 151 Brookdale Road in Stamford, Connecticut, USA. The Arboretum started in 1913, when Dr. Francis A. Bartlett, an eminent dendrologist and founder of the F.A. Bartlett Tree Expert Company, acquired "30 acres more or less" of North Stamford woodland to use as his residence, training school and research laboratory for his company. Over the years he assembled a large number of plant specimens on the property from all over the world. In 1965, when the research laboratory moved to North Carolina, the Stamford site, then covering more than 60 acres (24 hectares), was purchased by the State of Connecticut and designated the Connecticut State Arboretum. In 1993, the land and overall operation of the Arboretum were transferred to the University of Connecticut at Stamford. In 2001, the land was transferred to the City of Stamford and operations were transferred to the Bartlett Arboretum Association an independent non-profit organization. The Bartlett Arboretum Association continues to operate the grounds today. In January 2007, the Arboretum started offering a landscaping class for Spanish-speaking landscapers. Although taught in English, key words and expressions are translated into Spanish. The landscapers are taught subjects such as proper planting, mulching and pruning... Excerpt: Fort Scott National Historic Site -In 1842 Fort Scott, named after Winfield Scott, was established on the American frontier on the military road between Fort Leavenworth and Fort Gibson. It was established due to the rapid immigration of settlers from the Eastern United States out west. Fort Scott became one of a chain of forts intended to protect the new settlers from the Indians, and protect the Indians from the settlers. The United States government hopes of permanent Indian lands west of the Missouri River proved for naught, as settlers continued to encroach on the Indian settlements. Fort Scott's most active days were between 1842 and 1853. The Cherokees of Oklahoma were upset with the presence of Fort Wayne in their proximity. Excerpt: Hidden Lake Gardens colloquially known as Hidden Lake 755 acres (3.06 km), is a botanical garden and an arboretum operated by Michigan State University situated in the Irish Hills of southeast Michigan. The Gardens are known for their large collection of native and nonnative trees, shrubs and flowers. HLG was given to Michigan State University by Harry Fee in 1945. Today it is visited by nearly 45,000 people annually.. Hidden Lake Gardens mission is to preserve and enhance the natural beauty of the gardens and to display plants for the inspiration and education of the public. Hidden Lake Gardens began with Harry Fee, an Adrian businessman, purchased 200 acres (0.81 km) of land surrounding the "Hidden Lake" upon his retirement in 1926. He began with the intent to farm, but after realizing the land was not suitable for agriculture, he began to grow nursery stock instead. Fee decided that he did not want to compete with local nurseries during the Great Depression, so he began planting his trees and shrubs on the property. Fee sought to create picturesque landscape scenes, embellishing on the natural beauty of his property to create a "series of pictures." In 1945, Harry Fee would donate Hidden Lake Gardens to Michigan State University, and his generous Financial endowment continues to develop the gardens with additional land acquisitions, building construction, and educational programs and visitor services. A large portion of Hidden Lake Gardens has been planted as an arb...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3319589 ... Read more

Excerpt:The Brenton Arboretum 121 acres (490,000 m²) is a new arboretum and botanical garden in early stages of development, located at 2629 Palo Circle, Dallas Center, Iowa, USA. The Arboretum aims to display all Iowa native trees and shrubs suitable to the site, as well as many other tree species which can grow in central Iowa, and currently contains over 1,500 trees and shrubs. The Brenton Arboretum is a non-profit organization and open to the public. The Brenton Arboretum was founded by Sue and J.C. (Buz) Brenton and their children, on land which was part of the original "Home Farm" acquired by Dr. James Brenton and his son, William Henry, soon after they arrived from Indiana in 1853 by covered wagon. Its first trees were planted in 1997. The Master Plan was created by Anthony Tyznik, Batavia, Illinois, who for many years was the landscape architect for the Morton Arboretum. The Arboretum features a lake, pond, wetlands, several streams, walking paths, bridges, prairies, wildflowers, and a small library. The native grasses Buffalograss, blue grama, little bluestem, and sideoats grama are being planted to bring the land back to its pre-agricultural setting. Chapters: Carleton College Cowling Arboretum, Linnaeus Arboretum, Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, Saint John's Arboretum, Northland Arboretum. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Carleton College Cowling Arboretum (also referred to as the Arb) consists of approximately 880 acres (360 hectares) of land adjacent to Carleton College. It was created under the leadership of President Donald J. Cowling and Professor Harvey E. Stork in the 1920s. Professor Stork and Superintendent of Grounds D. Blake Stewart ("Stewsie") were responsible for much of the early development of the Arb, and their influences can still be seen and felt in many places. Stork and Stewsie were remarkable land managers, and it can be argued that they were among the nation's first restoration ecologists. In particular, their planting of upland forest trees and wildflowers in the Upper Arb (Stork Forest) decades ago is now coming to impressive maturity. The original Arboretum has been augmented both by absorbing the Carleton Farm as it was closed down in the 1960s, and by purchases of adjoining farmland. Cultivated land, which originally made up much of the property within the Arboretum, has slowly been phased out since 1970, and will probably be eliminated within the next few years. The Arb is divided by Highway 19 into the Upper Arb (south of the highway) and the Lower Arb (north of the highway; "lower" because it contains the low-lying floodplain of the Cannon River). The two portions of the Arb differ in character and in the pattern of visitor use. Since the Upper Arb is closer to both the campus and most Northfield residents, it receives more traffic and is being developed for heavier use. The Upper Arb has greater trail density, some trails designated for bike use, and generally smaller area... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2158327 ... Read more

Chapters: Riverview Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Park, British Columbia, Dominion Arboretum, Morgan Arboretum, University of Guelph Arboretum, Lauber Arboretum. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Riverview Hospital (Coquitlam) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia In 1872, Royal Hospital in Victoria was converted to British Columbia's first facility to house mentally ill patients. Due to overcrowding, Royal Hospital was closed and the patients moved to the new Provincial Asylum for the Insane in 1878. Again facing problems of overcrowding at the turn of the century, in 1904 the provincial government purchased 1,000 acres (4.0 km) in then-rural Coquitlam for the construction of Riverview Hospital and the adjacent Colony Farm lands. Patients were originally housed in temporary buildings, and in 1913 the building that would eventually be called West Lawn began treating the 300 most seriously ill male patients. By this time, Colony Farm was producing over 700 tons of crops and 20,000 gallons of milk in a year, using mostly patient labour. British Columbia's first Provincial Botanist, John Davidson, established an arboretum, nursery and a botanical garden on the hospital lands, often with the assistance of patients as there was a belief in the therapeutic value. The botanical garden was moved to the new University of British Columbia in 1916, but the arboretum and nursery remained. In 1924, the Acute Psychopathic Unit, later called Centre Lawn, opened. Then in 1930, the 675-bed Female Chronic Unit (later called East Lawn) opened. The first phase of what would eventually be called the Crease Clinic, the Veteran's Unit opened in 1934, with the second phase opened in 1949, giving Riverview its most iconic building. Finally in 1955, the Tuberculosis Unit (now called North ... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=21661578 ... Read more
