Chapters: Arboretum of the University of Central Florida, Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park, John C. Gifford Arboretum, Deerfield Beach Arboretum, Palm and Cycad Arboretum, Palma Sola Botanical Park. Not illustrated. Excerpt:Arboretum at the University of Central FloridaThe Arboretum of the University of Central Florida is located on the main campus of the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida, USA. Covering 80 acres .32 km), it contains more than 600 species of plants, including more than 100 bromeliads, in cultivated gardens. Due to the hurricanes of 2005, the Arboretum is receiving a major restructuring that will lead to new collections arranged by geographical area. The new design also entails picnic tables, running trails, and a disc golf course. Established by President Trevor Colbourn in 1983, The Arboretum began with approximately 12 acres (49,000 m) of a disturbed pond pine community on the east side of the developed part of campus, east of the present biology building. In 1988, at President Altmans direction, the University expanded the Arboretum to include a 5-acre (20,000 m) Cypress dome, an oak hammock of about 3 acres (12,000 m), and about 15 acres (61,000 m) of sand pine and Florida scrub, connected to the original Arboretum by Sabal palmetto community and increasingly rare Florida longleaf pine flatwoods. During this time the director of the Arboretum was Dr. Henry O. Whittier. He would remain director of the Arboretum until his retirement 2003, when Dr. Whittier was replaced as director by Dr. Martin Quigley. In 2004, Hurricane Charley decimated the pond pine community on the original 12 acres (49,000 m) destroying most of the canopy. This area is currently being restored to its original state by the UCF Environmental... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1799872 ... Read more

Excerpt: Tower Grove Park is a municipal park in the City of Saint Louis. Most of its land was donated to the city by Henry Shaw in 1868. It is on 289 acres (1.17 kmĀ²) adjacent to the Missouri Botanical Garden, another of Shaws legacies. It extends 1.6 miles from west to east, between Kingshighway Boulevard and Grand Boulevard. It is bordered on the north by Magnolia Avenue and on the south by Arsenal Street. The park features eleven pavilions of picturesque design, dating from the Victorian era, which provide shady rests from which visitors can enjoy the many lovely views. Its landscape includes a lily pond and formal plantings; the Piper Palm House, the site of music and other special events; as well as tennis courts; a wading pool for small children; open expanses of green; softball diamonds and soccer fields; and tall specimen trees and a great variety of bushes. The park has been designated a National Historic Landmark. Many events, from picnics to weddings, are held in the park throughout the year. During the summer, a number of large festivals are held in the park, including ones featuring themes such as international, pagan, and Gay Pride. Since 2005, from May through October, a farmers' market is held from 8:30-12:30 Saturday mornings just west of the Wading Pool Pavilion. It features local and organic farmers offering fresh produce, baked goods and preserves, as well as prepared foods and drinks, teas and coffees. The park features nearly 400 species of trees and bushes. The park is a well-known birdwatching area, particularly during the spring and fall bird migration seasons. It is part of the Mississippi Flyway and migrating birds rest in the park along their journey. Forty percent of North American songbirds and waterbir... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1324473 ... Chapters: Hayes Arboretum, Christy Woods, Huntington University Arboretum and Botanical Garden, Taltree Arboretum and Gardens, White River Gardens. Not illustrated. Excerpt: The Hayes Arboretum is an arboretum of 355 acres (144 ha) located in Richmond, Indiana, USA. It is open free to the public during daylight hours on Saturday. It is the primary project of the Stanley W. Hayes Foundation, a private operating foundation. The Arboretum is an educational facility and a managed nature preserve, collecting native wild plants indigenous to Wayne county and the Whitewater Valley Drainage Basin (an area encompassing 14 counties in west-central Ohio and east-central Indiana). It had claimed to include 172 species of trees, plants and shrubs native to the basin, but a 2007 study actually found 525 species. It also contains a renovated 1833 dairy barn, Beech-Maple Trail (3/4 mile), Habitat Trail (1 mile), Springhouse Trail (1/5 mile), Fern Garden Trail (329 ft), and History Trail (1 mile). The Arboretum was first established in June 1915 when Stanley Hayes began purchasing tracts of land to preserve the local old growth Beech-Maple Forest. He began reforesting the land, planting thousands of native trees and creating experimental plots, hoping to restore the land as when the first pioneers arrived. His estate now includes: Although not native to the Arboretum, the Arboretum includes the geology collection of a former Earlham College professor Dan Kinsey, who donated his collection in 1968. It contains at least one example of every type of rock native to Indiana. A small historic gas station that was moved to the site has been restored for use as a museum documenting the history of the Hayes Family and the Hayes Track Appliance Company.
