5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to the biology of the hive
Finding this book outside of the local library is difficult, I encourage beekeepers and laymen interested in the social insects to give a read.Dr Caron covers both the biology of the social insects and the management of the bee hive. His treatment of bee communication alone (via pheromones and dance) is worth the price of the book.

I hope he will take the time for an updated edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars A definite must read. Two thumbs up!
This is one of the best books on the subject of bees and beekeeping that I have found. It's coverage of honey bee history, biology and management has made it part of my short collection. Thanks

4-0 out of 5 stars Honey Bee Biology and Beekeeping

This book not only encompasses facts but also provides topics forfurther discussion, thus leading to further inquiry into the fascinatingworld of honey bees. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical Beekeeping: A review
I think this is a very good beekeeping book. It has very detailed information on all aspects of beekeeping. there is even a section to help out commercial beekeepers. It is made up of several chapters written by both Enoch H. Tompkins and Roger Griffith. The only thing that I would change about the book is I would elaborate how to start out in beekeeping and how to install package bees. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Companion to All Beekeepers
This Reference book on beekeeping is writen by 2 prominent figures in the field of beekeeping; their formerly published books were long used as practical guides and examinations companions in the academic beekeeping diploma degrees.
Their joined work "Illustrated Encyclopedia of beekeeping" came to crown their long publishing careers in beekeeping.
The book follows a systematic description in A-Z order. Each section under the Alphabetical letter is well illustrated and written in a lucid scientific language that is easy to follow. The book is a mine of useful information and practical tips based on the expertise and the long experience of these 2 authorities in beekeeping. It is a Must for All beekeepers, particularly the Academically orientated beekeepers and the book is certainly an important reference source for all beekeeping examinations. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars my first book on beekeeping
"Teach Yourself Beekeeping" is intended to be an introductory work on beekeeping which assumes the reader has no former knowledge of the hobby. I am interested in starting a hive in the near future so thought this would be a good place to start after having watched a number of interesting youtube videos on the subject.

This book is certainly helpful and seemingly thorough on the topics it covers. There are color illustrations (about 16 pages) and a few diagrams which help illustrate the text.

The author's writing style is easy to follow and in that regard, I feel I gained a general understanding of beekeeping. Unfortunately, the chapter on hive details was quite sparse with no clear diagram as to the components of a hive. This an area I thought most important, so in that regard the book was quite disappointing.

Another problem I found with the book was that the author was British and is writing to a British audience (I live in North America). This affects his discussion on equipment, weather, and general practices (among other things).

The book is small and has 141 pages of written material. It is a quick read and in that regard, takes little time to gain some useful information. I suspect there are a lot better introductory books available and so in that regard, I only rate this book 3 stars.

2-0 out of 5 stars For Beekeeping Beginners
This little book is written in a simplified language for newcomers or beginners in beekeeping.the book is not illustrated and avoids the scientific jargon and is written as a useful introduction to arouse the awareness and interest among the ordinary people to become beekeepers.

1-0 out of 5 stars No Respect
I ordered this book from my library to see if I may like to buy it. When I got the book, I was shocked to realize that the cover photo was made with a dead bee. How can I respect the author/authors for this kind of obvious lack of respect for their readers. ... Read more

Product Description
Experts in the art and science of sustainable, eco-friendly beekeeping condemn "modern" commercial methods of large scale honey production for creating the poor state of health and general decline of honeybees in the 21st Century, and warn that only a return to the chemical-free traditional methods of the village, small-farm and backyard beekeeper can ensure that the bees, as well as our ability to harvest and enjoy fresh, pure honey, survive and thrive for generations to come. Mysteries of Beekeeping Explained was first published in 1853, and explains every aspect of traditional American 19th Century, pre-chemical-era beekeeping methodology, including the building and maintenance of hives, breeding, dealing with pests, swarming, harvesting honey, preparing bees for winter and much more. This classic reprint belongs in the permanent library of every homesteader, micro eco-farmer and backyard honeybee enthusiast. ... Read more

PLANTS AND BEEKEEPING an account of those plants, wild and cultivated, of value to the hive bee, and for honey production in the British Isles by F. N. HOWES, D. Sc. PREFACE: There has been a marked increase of interest in beekeeping and the production of honey throughout the country in recent years. This may have been initiated by the Second World War, with the consequent shortage of sweetening materials, and partly by other considerations, such as the better understand ing of some of the major bee diseases that now prevails. The num ber of beekeepers has been doubled or trebled in many localities according to the statistics of Beekeepers Associations and doubtless the total production of home-produced Honey ka MDeen stepped up considerably. It is to be hoped this increase in the Nations annual honey crop will continue, and, what is of even greater importance, that this increase in the nations bee population will also be main tained, for it has been proved that the main value of the h ... Product Description
A scientist before he was a beekeeper, Mark L. Winston found in his new hobby a paradigm for understanding the role science should play in society. In essays originally appearing as columns in Bee Culture, the leading professional journal, Winston uses beekeeping as a starting point to discuss broader issues, such as how agriculture functions under increasingly complex social and environmental restraints, how scientists grapple with issues of accountability, and how people struggle to maintain contact with the natural world. Winston's reflections on bees, beekeeping, and science cover a period of tumultuous change in

North America, a time when new parasites, reduced research funding, and changing economic conditions have disrupted the livelihoods of bee farmers.

"Managed honeybees in the city provide a major public service by pollinating gardens, fruit trees, and berry bushes, and should be encouraged rather than legislated out of existence. Our cities, groomed and cosmopolitan as they appear, still obey the basic rules of nature, and our gardens and yards are no exception. Homegrown squashes, apple trees, raspberries, peas, beans, and other garden crops require bees to move the pollen from one flower to another, no matter how urbanized or sophisticated the neighborhood." ...
