A Study in Trust and Possibility. A Revealing Psychological Journey into a Great Mystery
Get it now! It will blow you away if you have an ounce of trust left in you. If you want to analyze scat and hair DNA remnants this may not be the book for you. Nonetheless, this book presents fascinating possibilities, and the author is of unquestionable sincerity. More than anyone at this time, Autumn Williams seems to have catalyzed a major change that is now running through to the core of Bigfooting. I have heard repeatedly expressed the sentiment that "proving" the Bigfoot/Sasquatch to the world would only endanger them and threaten their very survival. On her Oregon Bigfoot site and blog she has clearly delineated the reasons why decades of Bigfoot field research have largely failed to produce conclusive results. Autumn is forging a new attitude both toward the "Creatures" and the witnesses, recommending respect for both. This book offers more than the interesting, often humorous story of Mike, a loner who encounters and bonds with Skunk Apes somewhere in Florida; it will also teach you methodology in how to approach anecdotal accounts and deal with the difficulties witnesses face in relating their experiences. A result of exhaustive research
The skeptics can deny the existence of North American cryptids but they cannot deny the existence of the huge catalogue of reported sightings spanning such a long period of time.This books is obviously the result of a lot of hard work and exhaustive research.This book is an absolute must-have for the Sasquatch enthusiast.It is a study of the subject from a historical view and also from a sociological view.

Groundbreaking Research
Chad Arment has produced another winner, with this outpouring of archival research that lays the groundwork for any understanding of modern hominid or "apeman" sightings. Silly anonymous claims that another reviewer "could have slapped this together over the weekend" smell of sour grapes from someone who's never spent five minutes in newspaper archives. No one interested in Sasquatch or natural mysteries will want to let this volume slip away.

More accurately... The Misleading Bigfoot
This "book" is in fact only a slapped-together collection of news articles and blurbs which reference "wild men" sightings. There is the sparsest introduction which pretends to some kind of academic Bigfoot elitism, but never delivers, as there is absolutely no narrative, no attempt at context placement, no explanations of any of the relevant themes etc. There are only the articles, reprinted as is, and organized by state, that's it.

I could have slapped this together over the weekend.

The title though technically accurate is misleading in that there is no actual reference to Bigfoot, only to "wild men" etc that may or may not have been a Bigfoot since the articles all predate the term Bigfoot, and hence the post modern legend. The worst part though is that most of these stories are more or less identical, and the best one's (such as Jacko's) are all familiar from being included in far better and more inclusive Bigfoot books. If your OK with paying a hefty price for what is essentially a flip through, go for it, otherwise save your money and invest in a more substantial Bigfoot book you can actually read, like the Bigfoot Casebook Bigfoot Casebook updated: Sightings And Encounters from 1818 to 2004 which has the best of the Historical Bigfoot plus!

Three stars for being about Bigfoot, zero for effort. The Historical Bigfoot is for hardcore Bigfoot aficionados and paraphernalia collectors only!

Finally, a collection of old newspaper articles about Bigfoot, all in one place!! This gives both a historical spin to the story of Bigfoot, and an interesting view into the opinions of and storytelling abilities of those who reported on Bigfoot in the past.

Mysteries Magazine review
Chad Arment's third book on cryptozoology is the result of prodigious archival research on unknown primate reports filed from 41 states and six Canadian provinces between 1785 and 1946. The book effectively disproves the claim that Bigfoot was "invented" by a Bluff Creek, CA, hoaxer in 1958 or by a mercenary cameraman in 1967. If The Historical Bigfoot achieved that goal alone, it would be worth the cover price, but Arment offers a great deal more.

A skeptic in the purest sense, Arment opens with a thorough discussion of every conceivable explanation for false Bigfoot sightings, including hoaxes and stories contrived for ulterior motives, or misidentification of known animals or human beings. When all else is eliminated, only one possibility remains: that an unknown species still dwells in the wild reaches of North America.

The beauty of Arment's work is that he allows the historical record to speak for itself, through newspaper articles relating 143 separate sightingsacross North America. Nor do classic cases from the Pacific Northwest predominate. British Columbia and Oregon present only six cases each while Washington and northern California share another six between them. The entire region falls short of Pennsylvania, which has 19 cases on file while neighboring Ohio boasts 15.

Arment does not interpret the specific cases, nor does he dismiss them out of hand. Rather, he presents an archive so that readers can pursue specific items at their leisure.

Most of the stories collected in The Historical Bigfoot will be new to readers of the classic literature and to many field researchers. In that respect, the book performs an invaluable service. Casual Bigfoot buffs and serious cryptozoologists alike will rue the day they let this volume pass them by.

Bigfoot, Yesterday and Today
Call this a labor of love. While browsing about Amazon I was surprised to see that John Napier's book Bigfoot has no reviews. This is little short of sacrilege. Admittedly this is an old book, it was first published in 1972, but it is none the worst for that. At the time this book was written Dr. Napier was director of primatology at the Smithsonian Institute and he combined a scientist's mind, a believers awe and a little wit to produce a highly intelligent book that manages to be thought provoking and entertaining at the same time.

It is not a long book but he still manages to cover almost the whole range of the Bigfoot phenomenon. Beginning with a discussion of the role of the monster myth in today's world he progresses to some of the most classic stories that were then known. After discussing the Bigfoot phenomenon in Asia (the yeti) and in North America ( Sasquatch) he then subjects the evidence to a scathing scientific scrutiny. As a primatologist Dr. Napier brings an understanding of primate behavior and physiology that is the envy of many other authors. Since footprints are the principle evidence for the existence of Bigfoot these are treated first and by the time he is done you may have learned more than you want to know about foot prints. This is followed by similar treatments of natural history and the fossil evidence along with an analysis of the Patterson tape. His treatment of the Minnesota Iceman alone is worth the price of the book.

If you are looking for a thoughtful sifting of the evidence by someone with no ax to grind this is a book that is still worth reading. There is a lot of sloppy thinking present in many of these tales and he was not shy about exposing it in a manner that some people may find uncongenial, yet doubt remains. In the end he admits that it is not possible to prove absolutely that Bigfoot does not exist. What it does show is that it is possible to subject the evidence to a thoughtful analysis that allows anyone to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Good Examination - Fair Treatment of Topic
This is a great examination of the facts behind the Bigfoot legend.Keep in mind that this book was written in 1972, but much of the basic information is timeless.The book lacks in the more recent facts in the quest for a North American primate.The book could have also used a little tighter editing, Napier repeats himself several times and the book is full of misspellings.Napier also seems to focus on the lack of evidence for the yeti rather than focus on the North American sasquatch.More recent evidence for (and against) the existence of the yeti is worth examining after reading this tome.DO NOT let these little issues dissuade you from buying this book.It is still a GREAT read.Overall, I feel fortunate to have found this fair and accurate examination of the evidence to date (1972).The conclusions are fair, but the reader can draw and reach their own conclusions.Highly Recommended!

Fun Book to Read!
I love the Wiley & Grampa series by Kirk Scroggs. BigFoot Backpacking Bonanza is great for the Christmas season. It's 5th in the series. So, be sure to check out the rest. Steenberg's Alberta
Steenberg has several books out on the sasquatch phenomenon. For the size of this book (about 135 pages) it's really more of a thick pamphlet. The content within is limited but he is dealing with more localized people to the Alberta area, though he does jump into British Columbia in this book also. For a beginning book on the subject this is a good introduction into the sasquatch. It's by no means the best book on the subject but it will peak your interest. His second book, "Search for Giants" is much better. The 5 stars on this book is for it being easy to read, you can read it in a few hours, and the content vs page number is good. You don't get bogged down by listings of all the local names for a bigfoot. Just straight forward stories from alleged witnesses. The author lets you know he 'believes' in bigfoots but lets you decide on your own, he's not pushy about it in this book.

The nice part of his books is that he sticks to the areas he knows - Alberta, Canada. He does a great job in his retellings and 'research' of sightings/footprints. He covers many fresh stories and tends to stay away from the well known ones and U.S. occurances.

Steenberg spends alot of time travelling and produces some good interviews, as seen in his other book. Easy and quick to read and pretty enjoyable because you aren't getting rehashings of all the popular stories (Bauman, Ape Canyon, Patterson/Gimlin, etc). These deal with the more private citizens that just happened to have witnessed something out of the ordinary.

For a good coverage of Western Canada, pick up Steenberg's books and "Raincoast Sasquatch" by Robert Alley and you'll have some excellent reports thoroughly covering this region.

Absolutely wonderful book, beautifully descriptive
I bought this book in Northern California at a Ranger station.I asked what book to buy and was directed to this one.The descriptions of nature - the flowers, trees, animal life - is a pleasure to read.If you can't actually be there, just reading about the beautiful places is satisfying.Also the author's love for this natural country and his awareness of how precious it is, and how endangered, is moving.All of the places he describes are in danger of being logged or abused by grazing cattle, and in fact I noticed both in some of the hikes I did based upon his book.The most beautiful place I visited was Young's Valley.I highly recommend visiting there if you can.It is 17 miles into the wilderness on a dirt road which can be traversed by auto, though the last couple of miles are very rough and have to be taken extremely slowly.You'll come to a large pond before the final stretch.Stop and take a look.There are flowers around but what you'll be struck by the most is the absolute quiet.Look in the water.It is filled with Western newts!Then drive the last couple of miles, park and hike down into deeply forested country below.You'll find abundant meadows on all sides, fragrant white Azaleas wherever you see water running, flowers of all kinds....Once you come to Young's meadow you'll find a huge expanse of grass and wildflowers with many smaller meadows around and snow-topped mountains ranging around.At the bottom end of the meadow you'll find a trail which follows a creek, ranging through deeply forested country with mossy rocks along side the creek.Red monkey flower adornes the creek and other flowers grow along the banks where there is some sun or opening in the forest.All I can say is it is beautiful country and I hope to God it is not destroyed.The author has done his best to insure that these beautiful places are kept that way for posterity.

Wonderfully written precious resource
This little (fits in a jacket pocket. Handy!) book is a masterpiece and worth every penny. Not only do you get detailed maps and descriptions of trails in the Kalmiopsis wildland, Red Buttes and High Siskiyous, but you are also given good advice: walk it(don't ride, bike or drive). Pack everything out with you (rather than burying it. The bears *will* dig it up). John Hart tells you how to access some very obscure and little-known trails, how to follow trails which are faint, neglected and devastated by natural or human-inflicted disaster(s), gives you a "heads up" about areas where you might otherwise unwittingly trample salamanders and/or rare plants and speaks about wilderness areas that were (and still are) threatened by the activities of loggers and miners in Northern California and Southern Oregon. He gives potentially life-saving information, pinpointing locations of clean drinking water and shelter, weather conditions and recommendations for clothing and gear. Even if you never get off the sofa and go for a hike, this book is a terrific read! ... Read more

In pursuit of things to complain about
I was excited to get this book, I thought great! a book written about my area! Little did I know that in his quest to save the wilderness from horses and horse poop the author felt the need to change ALL of the locations and place names. Anyone in this book who rides a horse or carries a gun in the woods is automatically damned as unfit for the authors wilderness to which he is brand new himself! This is not a good book for those interested in bigfoot or research.

Bigfoot and the Rebel
If it wasn't for coming across the documentary video (Bigfoot and the Rebel) on Youtube, I would have never heard of this book or this author (Wilson). [...]I'm open minded about the possibility of this creature, though I haven't been following the current debate and developments closely. Wilson speaks with a passion and an intrigue about his experiences and his encounter. The video offers a great visual which I appreciated, showing him climbing up a snow capped mountain where he heard a Bigfoot, while offering biological/philosophical insights like I'd never heard before.

The book details his rookie initiation into the Bigfoot search and his reintroduction to the wilderness, only somewhat familiar from his youth. He struggles with himself as much as the wilderness and there are times when he thinks he must be crazy to be searching for a creature that may not exist. Wilson is the idealistic sort (probably overly so) and those types always get crushed by reality. He does harbor opinions, and lays himself threadbare in his honesty at times, but most of his digs are self-deprecating and aimed squarely at himself and, surprisingly, come with a sense of humor and irony. By its very nature, the search has left him isolated and has laid himself open to those who take offense with his search, his wilderness ideals (leave no trace camping, etc.), and the manner in which he leads his life.

The struggling writer was a subplot that moved the book along during those periods of time where he doesn't find any Bigfoot evidence. I read it as a potential warning to the singlemindedness of any pursuit which can end in extreme failure. In this regard it serves as a remarkable parallel and commentary upon the Bigfoot search itself. But Bigfoot/the Bigfoot search is the spoke that makes this book go. It was a raw (in a good way) firsthand account.

Great experiences. Tedious company.
This is my second draft of a comment on this book. My first was intemperate and combative. I've counted to ten, but that doesn't obviate the problems I had with T. A. Wilson's approach.

On the subject of Sasquatch, the author has a refreshing perspective: open-minded, curious, grounded in physical science yet capable of awe. Just getting into some of these areas yielded experiences that I can tell were very powerful, and he does a good job of bringing the reader with him.

On the subject of... well, everything else, the author is self-important beyond belief. Apparently Wilson is the only human being, out of all 6.7 billion of us, who possesses any sensitivity or respect for Mother Earth. His complaints about the rest of us are a drumbeat through the book. He takes the melodramatic step of changing all the place names, because he doesn't want anyone to explore the same areas - even though all of his trips were on public land, for which the National Park Service publishes maps and issues permits. And, despite a pretty continuous display of wilderness skills, this astonishing mistake on p. 116: "Thunder cracked. I counted to twelve before lightning veined the sky." Can you spot it?

He's also morose. He can't bring himself to stray far from the theme of his forlorn, sputtering career as a writer, and I wore out several of the world's tiniest violins reading about his plight. Reference to one's own life as "Sisyphean"? Check. Description of a banal coincidence as "Jungian synchronicity"? Check. I especially liked the part where he said that having to submit his writing to agents and editors for their approval amounted to "censorship" worthy of Stalin. Good grief, son. Here's the thing: I'm a writer too. And I know that you can get a job, live a grown-up life, and have plenty of time and integrity left over for creative output. Plus, you don't have to have your mail sent to your mom's house.

Get over yourself immediately, T.A. Wilson. Are you hearing me? Imagine that you're Gilligan and I'm the Skipper, wailing on you with my hat. Get. Over. Your. Self. Congratulations on finally getting published, though.

In Californian Bigfoot country without leaving your house
I felt like I was hiking with the author in the CA wilderness, it was great. This book is detailed and thoughtful and told by a conservationist and wildlife lover who is truly concerned about the environment and what man has shamefully done to it in a very short period of time. One review said this book was about camping as much as anything else which is partly true but it wasn't boring by any means and doesn't get into beginner lessons on how to start a fire etc.(in fact TA Wilson doesn't use fire in the wild). The only thing I didn't like was the use of fictitious names for places because I like to envision where I am as a reader and even pinpoint it on the map sometimes, but I understand why he did it. He loves the land and doesn't want people tramping all over it because of his book. I don't want to give anything away, I just want to say that it was a pleasure to read and I really hope that it is completely true because I want to believe it very much. I hope Wilson does a sequel or even a series of books on Bigfoot because this one was exhilarating to read and takes you to a place out under the stars that is a mystery to most of us 9 to 5 couch surfers.

Great read, not the typical bigfoot book.
I had my doubts when buying this book, I really enjoy the sightings type of bigfoot book but this was a pleasant surprise.The day to day description of the author's trips into the wilderness make for very interesting reading!Although he does not use the real names for any locations (to protect them) you still get a good feel for the forest's of California.The story kept me interested up to and including the end with many harrowing moments.I will not give anything away but just take my word for it, if you are interested in the bigfoot/sasquatch phoenomena, this would make an excellent addition to your collection. ... Basically, this is a book for young readers, ages 8-11 maybe. This does nothing for your bigfoot collection but it will get a young person excited about bigfoot (for about 2 days). There are quick blurbs about chupacabra, mothman, and a few water creatures but 3/4 of the book is for bigfoot. It's very cut and dry and the title is a bit misleading as the only 'caught on film' that is covered is, of course, the Patterson-Gimlin footage. It's your typical scholastic reader book; eye catching but not nearly enough info even for a kid. Not worthy of your bigfoot collection but maybe for your child. ... Read more
