5-0 out of 5 stars This Is a Work of Art
Iuse this book as a resource guide in comparing and contrasting various writings/teachings among Native Peoples worldwide as it relates to the Sasquatch, Mande Burung, Yeti, Alma, Yowie, Yeren, Fear Liath, Baramanou, Ngýi Rng, Orang, and similar peoplesin our world. I LOVE ALL the AMAZING images of the Honorable Fathers, Mothers, Children, and other works by the Indigenous Peoples of this Land. I invite my friends worldwide to read this book as a further resource guide towards better understanding not only towards the Sasquatch People BUT also as a way of further appreciating the many aspects of Native-American tradition in all of it's richness and beauty.AND THERE IS INDEED MUCH BEAUTY AND RICHNESS IN SUCH THINGS.

It was wonderful to have met Scholar Kathy Strain in person as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why In The World!
Why in Gods name did it take so long for someone to write a book like this! I have been waiting years for a book like this it is about time and Kathy Strain did a wonderful job! I have heard some people complain though that this book was a bit slow and boring my question is well what book were you reading I read this book in one day then turned around and read it again the next day and all i can say is I hope Kathy Strain writes another one soon. She did the subject justice as well as the Native Americans. Thank You Kathy Great Job!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
I have always been fascinated with Native American folklore and bigfoot so I was pleasantly surprised to find this book. First of all, it is probably the most beautiful book I have ever seen. The photos are done in sepia - giving the book an historic feel - something worthy of having been produced by a museum. I love how the photos are presented so that you can see the faces of the people these stories belong to - and I find it fascinating that while the faces change from culture to culture - the stories are remarkably similar. Whether you are a bigfoot fan or into Native American folklore - I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Totally AWESOME!!!!!
This book is absolutely beautiful. The historical photos and artwork used to illustrate it are nothing short of breathtaking. Whether you believe in the existence of Bigfoot or not, the stories that Kathy has assembled here from so many different Native American peoples make for fun and interesting reading. She has done an outstanding job in putting this all together. I loved it!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT overview of Native American Legends!!!'

This book, which only took me about 3 1/2 days to finish, is chock-full of Native American Legends of the Sasquatch from all over the United States and even a bit into Canada, and Strain writes the book so well that it is a breeze to get through. She has obviously painstakingly searched different databases and historical records and found all kinds of really interesting legends. The result is many tribes having essentially the same legends (with some variations in each), with characteristics such as giants with baskets on their backs collecting wayward Indian children; usage of fire from all the giants; taking Native women as their brides; cannibalism and other traits which match up quite well with each other. I would give this book not 3 or 4 or even 5 stars, but 10!!!!!! I highly recommend this one, which is available at Amazon. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Focus is on existence, not myth
Carrie Carmichael, author of Bigfoot: Man,Monster, Or Myth?, attempts to convince the youthful reader that Bigfoot (Sasquatch) is real.Carmichael reviews accounts of encounters with Bigfoot in the US, including accounts of an Albert Ostman (who was allegedly kidnapped by a Sasquatch family for a week), a tale retold by none other than President Teddy Roosevelt about another person's experience, and Patterson and Gimlin's Sasquatch filming adventure.

Carmichael concludes, "Killing a Sasquatch is not a smart idea. It's too big a chance to take.'What if we only kill one,' said one small child, 'and it was the only one left?'Destroying something to prove it exists doesn't make any sense. The Bigfoot searchers should go on looking for this rare breed.Someday all the answers may be known about the Bigfoot. Today the creature remains an unsolved mystery" (p. 48).

This book was published in 1977.So more than 30 years later, there has really been no change in the general Sasquatch mystery. No body. Please don't hurt the remaining Sasquatch. The people who see Sasquatch and its tracks are those who go out looking for it.

For a review of the current research behind the mystery, I recommend Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science, by Jeff Meldrum.

5-0 out of 5 stars MOST AMUSING,EXCITING,AND MYSTERIOUS BOOK ABOUT BIG Foot!
If I was to recommend an interesting book to a friend I would definitely recommend BIG FOOT.I think it's a book that has action, suspense, and mystery. It has lots of mysterious things that might get you spooked. There is lots of history involved in it.I think if you like these kind of books this is a book you might want to check out.I checked this out from my school library. It's easy to readand very exciting. So if you're looking for a good book to read you might want to check it out and read it. I got this for my dad for christmas to go with his sasquatch t-shirt. he started reading it right away and finished it in about 2 days.

3-0 out of 5 stars Following In the Footprints of Others
This was a very quick and easy read. If you live in NY or any of the New England states, and/or have an interest in Bigfoot/Sasquatch, you'll likely want this on your shelf.

Many of the "sightings" detailed here you will have read about elsewhere, particularly if you are a Bigfoot fan/believer. But it's very nice in this case to have them all listed out in chronological order at the back of the book.

All in all, a solid addition to the Bigfoot hunter's bookshelf.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good update of Monsters of the Northwoods
This book, clocking in at just over 145 pages, is a pretty worthy successor and update to an earlier book both authors co-wrote with Bill Brann and Bruce Hallenbeck in 1992. It covers sightings and reports in the Empire State, but also covers reports in New England States (Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and even all the way to Maine). The brother authors do look at the different theories as to the possible existence of the Sasquatch, even delving into alternate explanations (though they are quick to point out they do not necessarily believe those explanations). I would give this one 4 out of 5 stars, but it is still not quite as good as MOTN. ... Read more

Product Description
The Field Guide to Bigfoot and Other Mystery Primates is a comprehensive study of the astonishing variety of puzzling primates that are being reported by eyewitnesses around the world – but that science has failed to recognize. This fully illustrated volume not only contains the references, range maps, and typical footprints that appeared in the first edition, but it also contains a new, complete index and new preface that updates the discoveries made since this book was first published.
"The thousands of worldwide sightings of unclassified bipedal primates, including the Yeti, may be confusing because these sightings entail more than one species. This field guide attempts to sort out the different creatures, coming up with a classification of eight possible mystery primates. But this book makes no real attempt to persuade skeptics of the existence of any of them. It's sort of speculative taxonomy, but I think it is one of the most useful texts in the ongoing controversy over Bigfoot." – Kevin Kelly, Whole Earth Review
"If only one of these creatures is verified by naturalists, it would be a biological sensation...The book is well-researched with a good bibliography." – William Corliss, Science Frontiers
"This book looks like any other field guide you might pick up. It has drawings, maps, tracks, descriptions of the organisms, and the details of the most prominent sightings or evidence....Anyone interested in folk zoology – especially anyone interested in how legends and animal lore intersect with modern scientific research – would find this to be an intriguing volume....It is an extensive...catalog of all the variations on the 'mystery primate' theme organized geographically and annotated extensively."– Andrew J. Petto, Reports of the National Center for Science Education ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars So ludicrous, it's funny.Sci-fi packaged as science.
How can a book that treats mermaids, lake gremlins, and dozens of different species of apemen as real, biological entities be taken seriously?Well, it can't...But it's fun to read never the less!

I have no doubt that Coleman can't SERIOUSLY believe any of the stuff in his book. Can ANYONE give honest consideration to reports of legless, fish-tailed water monkeys?I mean, without the assistance of some pharmaceutical substances.

Coleman yet again shows that he is completely unfamiliar with any sort of paleoanthropology or primate systematics when he mixes and matches genus and species names and utilizes taxonomies from nearly a century ago.But hey, he's only throwing out 10 cent word to try to convince the gullible that he's up on the latest, greatest, scientific information...he clearly is not.

The drawings are comic-book quality and many look more like Jim Henson creations than real primates. The text is full of unverified speculation, and the whole mess would have benefitted greatly from at least a once-over by an editor. If you're a fan of this sort of thing (and I am), it's worth buying this book just as a novelty.Don't make the mistaken assumption that there's any useful or new information in it.You've seen or heard this all before in more detail, and with better writing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ups and downs....
While I honor the purpose and effort applied to this work, I think the choices of the authors may do as much harm as good! The study of unknown hominids/hominoids/pongids is fraught with controversy, particularly within the scientific community, as they really have a tough time dealing with Cryptozoology as a whole in any case.

The problem is that so many times the really interesting, credible, and scientifically valid Cryptozoologic cases get lumped in with the most preposterous reports, with everything from 'boogie-men' to space aliens and mermaids.Few self-respecting scientists are willing to invest a lot of time or effort in the field, and often write off the whole subject as merely hallucinations or folk-tales (and if you examine some of the tales, it is easy to see why!).

This is a mistake, as there ARE very credible and scientifically useful cases and evidence that can provide the basis for sound investigations, and a few good people are beginning to do just that (Jeff Meldrum is a shining example). This book creates a compendium of different types of unknown creatures, and is intended to be used in the field when speaking to eye-witnesses, etc as a basis for identification.Fair enough!Unfortunately, there is also included a bunch of frankly, quite fanciful creatures ('mer-beings' and others) that really have no business in a work of this type, and can only draw the ridicule of the scientific community if it is used as the basis for any sort of reporting. In addition, the drawings are quite crude, and while this allows a certain amount of flexibility when used as intended, the cartooonish nature of many of these illustrations just is not up to snuff when the level of knowledge and scientific interpretation already obtained is considered.

In sum, if you are looking to get much in the way of the current level of knowledge on this subject, then this is not really the book for you, but instead, I can suggest two other works, the venerable 'Abominable Snowmen, Legend Come to Life' by Ivan T. Sanderson (get the unabridged version), which is STILL, after forty years one of the best investigations into the subject, and second, 'Sasquatch; Legend Meets Science' by Jeff Meldrum, which is the best recent work, and includes analysis of the most recent cases.

4-0 out of 5 stars Covers Every Inhabited Continent
Bigfoot, Yeti, Yowie, Orang Pendek, and Agogwe. All the most recognizable names in the world of mystery Cryptozoological primates are here. But the not so recognizable names really sale this book. Names like the Jimbra, Ngoloko, Tjangara, and the Tano Giant. And then there are those you may be a little more familiar with, like the Alma and the Didi. How about the Chinese Wildman, or the Yeren? Whether familiar or not, its probably mentioned in this guide. But that is also one of the shortcomings of the Field Guide; so many subjects, too few eyewitness accounts. My one reason for not giving it a 5 star rating. Hopefully more page additions are forthcoming in future revisions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Coleman hits another homerun!!!
This book, originally released in 1999, was controversial for the sheer number of different species covered in it. Perhaps the most controversial classification was the oceanic primates, or "mer-beings." This book is not exactly a "straight" reprint of the original volume from 1999; there is a new preface in the beginning and a new index in the back. The rest of it is the original 1999 material, but a good deal of it is relevant to the present-day reports, and the book can be very useful for those searching for these animals. The illustrations are very well-done from other's descriptions (and in some cases, photos and film) and show a diversity of sizes and shapes and colors in these mysterious primates. I do highly recommend this volume (both versions) to give the reader an idea of the different hairy bipeds around the globe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book ever
Go out and buy it from Amazon.com.It's usually less than a dollar. It's about a woman who decides to take a break from modern society and relationships in order to clear her head and simplify her life. She takes off and "goes native" in the forest. The more time she spends there, the less need she has for human contact, materials, or even sustenance. There are other huge eco-issues and feminism statements repeated.Nioka meets Bigfoot :)and DB Cooper (see criminal airplane hijacker from 1971).Through the first half of the book, we see the woman as she is in the forest. Periodically, we digress a little in order to learn bits and pieces about her past, such as the motivations that eventually brought her to this point in life.In the second half, the character seems to grow into the forest, and changes into something beyond a typical human form. She is able to transform herself into light at will and can project herself into different places. Two thought provoking statements are made in the book.1."Everything that ends with Z, begins with A again".2. "Don't feed the crocodiles".

I wish there were more books out there by Paul Doyle. But this one's a fluke. It kinda looks like Doyle was simply an average business owner who decided to write a book, then created his own publishing company when he couldn't find any publishers to take on the book.I can't find any more information than a transcript of an interview with him dated from the early 90's.

I gotta give Doyle credit. This book is frickin brilliant!I think any publishing company had to have been crazy to not take this one on.It is REALLY good!More so, I gotta give him kudos for DIY-ing it and getting the book out there himself.

Yep, this one's going on the shelf next to "Nisa".

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, funny, not what you'd expect (in a good way)
I first read this book in Chicago in 1993 during a huge winter storm that seemed to go on forever. This book reads a lot like a Tom Robbins novel...it draws you in and doesn't let you go, and has many unexpected twists and turns that will make you laugh, cause you to think about things you haven't thought about for years. I was so impressed with the book that I referred several others who reported back similar experiences. The only question is: WHEN IS HE GOING TO WRITE THE SEQUEL?

4-0 out of 5 stars Even Wild Women Get the Blues...
You MUST read this book! Paul Doyle has written a fantastic book filled with adventure, humor and wit.He is very funny as he pokes fun at the dogma of political, spiritual and environmental correctness while he effectively underlines the values that dogma intended to support. He clearly loves the Pacific Northwest rainforest he describes in fine detail. No matter if you have been there or not you will see it in it's glory and feel the love and respect he has for the natural world. I loved Nioka.I wanted to be Nioka. And I must admit, I have always hoped that Bigfoot really exists and continues to elude capture. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bigfoot Mystery
My three children, Elizabeth 10, Jacob 9, and Spencer 7, just finished this book. They read it out loud taking turns for two days. I couldn't get them to put it down. I liked the way that Robert Leiterman used the family as his adventurers, as we also look for Bigfoot whenever we can. Robert kept their attention and the book was very exciting for them to read. Thank You Robert, we're looking forward to reading the other books too. Sharon Cline and Family, Reno, NvBigfoot Believers

3-0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Mysterious Adventure full of interest, mystery, and adventure.
Yes, read the review title, that happens continuously in this book. Everything was "mysterious" or "an adventure" and a little "interesting". These words are used far, far too much in this book. Sorry had to get that out of the way. Otherwise, what Lieterman does here is take your standard 'every book' anecdotes from bigfoot books and weaves them into a fictional story involving some kids and a disbelieving father. These would include Alberts Ostman, Roosevelt's Baumann story, Patterson-Gimlin film, Jerry Crews, and standard eye-witness sumation statements. Even the events involving the kids are stereotypical "sightings" with real witnesses. He also gives some scenes in which the POV is from the bigfoots. The 'bigfoot expert' characters are modelled largely after real researchers. The kids are believable and predictably the father becomes a believer.

This book is targetted towards a younger audience, say 10 to 15 years old. It's readable as an adult but you will not enjoy it as much because it is written for younger people. On the positive side, this is a great series for younger people to become interested in the bigfoot phenomenon or even to read as a story about strange creatures in the woods. For the armchair bigfoot enthusiasts, some will gush over what a great story he wrote; for me it was just 'all-right' and a nice way to incorporate the common stories into a way to inspire kids. Unfortunately, there are a plethora of editting and mis-spelling errors throughout the book (why is the author using bigfoot as a proper noun?). We'll see what the other two books have to offer. This would probably be great to read with your kids while camping.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yeti - Sasquatch - Big Foot : Pretty Big shoes to fill!
This first book in a series of Bigfoot mystery novels for young readers is an excellent book. It's a nice introduction to the world of cryptozoology and a good informational source of natural resources. Writers get better with each practice and the sequel to this book is "Yeti or Not, Here we come!" is even better!
If Yeti's aren't your thing, buy this book for its insight into natural resources and I also strongly recommend his natural resource book, "Great Valley Grassland Adventure."

5-0 out of 5 stars Bigfoot mystery
The title says it all. The author does an excellent job of weaving his tale through the eyes of two young brothers who stumble upon an unusual site while hiking in the redwoods. After their encounter they go searching for answers with their family and find more questions at times than answers. The author keeps the story interesting with a mix of science, natural history, and good characters based in a family atmosphere. Great for young and older readers. Can't wait to explore "Yeti or Not" ... Read more
