5-0 out of 5 stars Great in midterm examinations
For undergraduate courses related to biochemistry, Schaum's Outline of Biochemistry is a vital course supply material for quizzes, midterms and also finals. The book contains a wide range of topics including amino acids and proteins, and hundreds of examples at the end of every chapter.

1-0 out of 5 stars For Timesavers not Great for Bookshelves.
For Timesavers not Great for Bookshelves.
I used this book quite infrequently because of the too short and simple contents. I rather refer to a complete text and shorten them by my own.
Futhermore, this book is not great for bookshelves. It's a paperback!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Study Guide
I used this book while pursuing my B.S. in Biochemistry and it is the best study guide I ever used. It covers all of the primary topics in undergraduate biochemistry and gives pertinent examples without extraneous information. I highly recommend it as a study aid, especially for standardized tests. ... Read more

Book Description
The third edition of Concepts in Biochemistry makes the most applied and accessible biochemistry text on the market. Students are more successful with Boyer because it isn't intimidating and it makes clear the relevance of the material to their future careers. Like the first two editions, Boyer is written for students who need an introduction to the fundamental principles of biochemistry and are preparing for a career in the allied health sciences, the biological sciences, and the environmental sciences. (The text is also appropriate for use in one-semester courses developed for chemistry majors as a result of the new American Chemical Society requirements for three-credit hours of biochemistry coursework.)

The modern, student-friendly organization sets the book apart from the competition because the early placement of nucleic acids enhances the traditional coverage of protein structure and function, and metabolism. As an example, it is now possible to present metabolism in a more contemporary fashion, emphasizing gene regulation and integration.

Rod Boyer is a recently retired Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Hope College in Holland, Michigan. He has a PhD from Colorado State and recently spent a sabbatical year at Nobel Prize winner Tom Cech's lab at the University of Colorado. He is on the Editorial Board for the journal, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education and has been very active in education affairs for the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Regarding Science-Ejected Vitalism, 2005:
Vitalism is a profoundly science-ejected concept, though many CAM or 'natural health' cabals falsely claim that vitalism survives scientific scrutiny.

I quote:

"during the 19th century, any biological process that could not be understood in chemical terms was explained by the doctrine of vitalism. Vitalists argued that it was the presence of a vital force (life force or spirit) that distinguished the living world from the inanimate world. The experiment that destroyed the idea of vitalism was the synthesis of urea [...] in 1828 [...by] Wohler [p.005...] Pasteur held firmly to his belief in the vital-force theory, that only whole, living organisms are capable of carrying out metabolism and other biochemical processes. However the vital-force theory was put to rest when Hans and Eduard Buchner demonstrated in the 1890s that cell-free extracts of yeast [...] could ferment glucose, sucrose, and other carbohydrates into ethanol [p.450...] vitalism: a now defunct doctrine that living organisms have a vital force that distinguishes them from the inanimate world [p.676]."

3-0 out of 5 stars Too old
Buy the new one. The older version (Version 3) is far inferior to the new one (Version 4). Regardless neither version was extremely helpful or relative to my class, however they might come in handy when studying for boards (I am keeping my book till then).

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent but Rapid Review is Better
This book is not bad but for Board review stick with Goljan and get the Rapid Review. For class there is not enough detail so I would stick with Lippincott's Biochemistry

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
It's a good to help review before a test. Not very good for intro biochemistry (amino acids, protein structures, post-translational modification, etc). Has good clinical applications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book is a must for any medical biochemistry class.I probably could have skipped all the required texts and just bought this.

3-0 out of 5 stars These people all lie
Don't misjudge my review; I'm not just some lazy kid who hates all work.I'm in the honors program at UCI studying to be a doctor. And this book isn't very good. The reading, I will grant, isn't too bad. Most of the time it's easy to follow, and sometimes it's confusing. However, the problem comes when you try to put it all to the test and do the problems at the end of the chapter. Not only does the book present problems that were not covered in the reading, but it doesn't explain the answers, either. It just gives them to you.I am forced to constantly ask a friend of mine if he knows how to get the answer they give, because the book gives no indication of how to arrive at it.It also withholds information; in one problem in chapter 5 the answer they give is only possible, ONLY possible, if chymotrypsin cleaves a protein at isoleucine (the book only gives leucine, not iso-).In the next problem, it is virtually the same thing, taking cleavage information and trying to put amino acids in the correct order. However, in this one, their answer insists that you NOT cleave at isoleucine.Otherwise you'd be wrong and wonder what you did.Of course, you'd get no explanation. If you have to get this book for a class, then fine.Good luck with the homework if you have to turn in the problems. But if you're getting it to further challenge yourself of your own accord, search around for some type of solutions manual first, because this book won't tell you how to get anything. It assumes you have a lot of background knowledge already, so I don't know where one reviewer got the notion that this is great for beginners...if you want a good book for beginners, seek out the Garrett & Grisham book.It simplifies biochemistry beyond belief compared to this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book to start Biochemistry!
Mathew's Biochemistry is an excellent book to start this difficult subject! The easy diagrams and interesting notes just keeps you wanting to learn more...Read, read and read.If only it could have a more clinical focus it would be 100% perfect. Combine it with "Harper's Biochemistry" and you will soon run A+ on scores! To die for!

5-0 out of 5 stars great book!
I am a biochemistry major at the university of the philippines.i have several biochem books on my shelf and i just recently purchased a copy of the 2000 edition (i also have the 2nd ed).the book just keeps getting better.the book really helps a lot especially when the class lecture corresponds with how the book presents the subject matter.as a biochem major, i'd say this is a pretty good way to present biochem.it makes it seem easy and fun to read.you look at the pictures and read the caption and you learn the idea in a flash.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best biochemistry book
I have not seen the 2000 edition yet, but the previous edition is very elegantly written. Compare with some other biochemistry text, this book provides another view into biochemistry. Almost (if not all) all thechapters have a special topic after the chapter text, showing you how wecan turn the dry text into useful experimental tools for solving life'sproblem, scientifically. These special topics also give us a view into thephysical chemistry world, which has become more and more important at thetime.

4-0 out of 5 stars Illustrative
It's difficult to review a book on a subject as biochemistry, when you're a student, and this is the only book I've read on the subject. This book is used by medical students at the Universty of Bergen, Norway, and as a student I find it very easy to read (if you have mind that biochemistry isnot an easy subject). The illustrations and figures in the book arehelpful, and often, you can get the essential in the text by only lookingat the figures. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book
This book was a very good purchasing, because it gives me the main infomation about biomolecules, metabolism and biochemistry deseases. I don't want to be expert in biochemistry, I am studying medicine and I just want to be a doctor that has a good biochemistry knowledge with a clinical approach. This book gives me what I want...
Besides, the book makes be easier to learn biochemistry...

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Clinical Correlations
The whole point of going to medical school is to be able to solve problems and apply basic scientific principles in solving those problems. This edition gives specific and memorable clinical cases that help one to remember and apply these priniciples in clinical practice. It also comes with a CD that is a great bonus. I heartily recommend this book to help explain and use the basic medical biochemistry principles. It starts with a look at the metabolic and nutritionalneeds of the human body, relevent to anyone, and a great place to start, whereas many other books like, Lehninger, start out with chemical theory. This makes Marks much more relevent to the medical student and much more interesting. I recommend this book for your library and practical use.Use Lehninger to keep the door open, and read Marks to feed your brain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marks' Basic Medical Biochemistry: A Clinical Approach
An excellent clinically based medical biochemistry book.Good examples of realistic cases.

2-0 out of 5 stars It makes a decent doorstop
I'll be honest, I love Biochemistry and I have tried several different books but I always go back to Voet.It may be a little deep in detail for the medical community but it gives a much more clear and concise overview than this book.I gave it two stars because it does serve as an excellent doorstop.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for MS1s w/o Biochem Background
I got this book for a medical biochemistry course I took prior to entering medical school to fulfill my undergraduate degree requirements. The book then was amazing. It's explanations were easy to understand, the figures weren't confusing, and the clinical correlations helped out tremendously. When I did enter medical school, I cracked open the book again to see if it would help with the level we were at there. It did! It seems to have a good balance in teaching the concept and integrating the deep minutia. I absolutely love this book. Whenever stuff gets a little confusing at school, I go home and read it and it clears it all up. This book comes highly recommended! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not A Standalone
My experience with this book was a positive one.Well as positive as studying for the boards can get anyway. This text is good for one thing, the overall picture and how the biochem of lipid, carb, and AA metabolism all fits together. This book IS NOT, I REPEAT, NOT! a standalone. However, combine this book with Qbank and First Aide and you will be reasonably prepared for the biochem questions.PROS - fast read, good overall picture of biochemical metabolismCONS - expensive, weak on some subjects ie, heme synthesis and porphyrias.Overall this is a good study aide for Step 1.

2-0 out of 5 stars In need of serious revision...
I purchased several of the high yield and brs reviews for dental boards. As far as the high yield series goes, this one is by far the worst. Most of what is in this book is really basic info, like stuff you learned in Cell Biology as an undergraduate student. It may get you through the boards, but I really doubt this alone could help achieve a high score. Either save your twenty-five bucks and use your class notes, or buy another review text...cause this one sucks!

1-0 out of 5 stars A caring man's advice: DON'T BUY IT
This book is as unethical as reviews ever come.....Unbelievably expensive 25 USD for its value.A lot of essential very high yield materials are NOT even mentioned.A lot of low yield irrelevant materials mentioned.I dont think the author had a clue what is important. If you wanna a great high yield, get the behavioral science or neuroanatomy high yields but NEVER waste your money on this insulting "review" book.BRS biochemistry is excellent alternative if you have the time or the back of lippincotts review(at the very end)I hope this was a helpful advice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good if you need quick quick coverage.
Nicely summed up by the reviewer below. If you need a very quick-and-dirty review, this is good.I take points off due to the lack of index and some weak sections. At this point, QBank leads me to believe that this book may not cover everything I needed to know.. but good for last minute stuff, especially if you hate Biochem like myself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good choice for USMLE
High Yield Biochemistry is the perfect book for a one or two day board review. It is easy reading without the complex charts and detail needed in the first year of medical school. The book does miss some major points.Vitamin overdoses are weak, as are some major disorders/deficiencies likeDiabetes, G6pdh, Hbs/Hbc, andpurine salvage. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
Biochemistry Molecular Biology of Plants is a major contribution to the plant sciences literature, superbly edited by three distinguished scientists, Bob B. Buchanan, Wilhelm Gruissem, and Russell L. Jones, with contributions from more than 50 world-renowned scientists. With over 1,400 pages, 1,100 full-colour original drawings and 500 photographs this work qualifies, in the words of the Science reviewer, as:
"an essential reference for practicing plant biologists and for the increasing number of scientists from other disciplines who are entering the field of plant biology. To exploit fully the wealth of new information provided by the genome projects and to integrate the metabolic, regulatory, and signal transduction pathways of complex organisms, biologists will require a solid command of biochemistry and physiology. For this reason, the publication of Biochemistry Molecular Biology of Plants could not have come at a more opportune and auspicious time."

This book is meticulously organised and richly illustrated, useful both for teaching and for reference. The multi-authored work provides a contemporary view of its subject, including molecular biology, cell biology, and plant physiology, integrated around the themes of:
* compartmentation
* cell reproduction
* energetics
* metabolism
* development

Read the words of the reviewer in CELL:
"The great strength of this book is that it has integrated its three major components (molecular biology, cell biology, and plant biochemistry) in each of the 24 chapters, resulting in a comprehensive analysis of a multitude of specific topics."

Who should buy this spectacular new text?
* Plant biologists and scientists in related fields
* Professors in departments of plant biology, plant biochemistry, plant physiology, and related fields
* Graduate and upper-level undergraduate students of plant biology
* Researchers in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and agribusiness industries

A CD-ROM of all illustrative matter in the book is available separately ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, bad binding
The book is great, one of the best to learn everything about plant biology. Good explanations and pictures. Binding could be better, hardcover shouldn't be that expensive.... Losing some pages aleady after a few weeks.

2-0 out of 5 stars low value
I borrowed this book from a library during graduate school and found it to be very helpful in reviewing plant biochemistry. It is well written and has a fair amount of detail. The illustrations were well done and helpful. In spite of all the book has going for it however, it is outrageously expensive. In fairness, it is a fat book at nearly 1400 pages.Nevertheless the content does not justify the extremely high price tag, and I am disappointed that the publishers expect students to cough up this amount of money for a single text.

4-0 out of 5 stars love it
This book has the basis of Molecular and cell Biology that make you well armed. It has great pictures too. The biochemistry also is awesome, you'll find all the pathways you want. I even not gonna sell it after i graduate. I prefer keep it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Plant Biol. book out there
I am a PhD candidate in Plant Sciences and I work with both applied and basic researchers who work on all aspects of plant biology/agriculture etc.Everyone I work with and myself included feel that this is the best single plant biology text. It is a few years old now so some of the mol. biology will be outdated, and a couple of examples have since been proven to be different than described in the book, but this is minor. This is for the adv. undergrad or graduate student and if you are a graduate student in plant biology you should have this book-it is very expensive, but nearly every post-doc/grad student I know has a copy. Get the hardcover it will hold up better.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best lab books available
I was blown away by this book. That's how good it is.

I'm a microbiology grad student working on my Ph.D. and I have referred to this book on multiple occasions. It covers almost every single type of procedure that a student would do in a life science or biochemistry laboratory. From molecular biology to PCR; from Southern blots to western blots; from electrophoresis to mass spectrometry; from cell culture to microscopy.....this book literally covers it all.Additionally, it covers all of these topics in pretty good detail. Each procedure is not only discussed in terms of how to do it, but also why it works.

Fantastic.Every life science, biochemistry, or health science student should have this as a reference book.

4-0 out of 5 stars good with an adjunct
this is a very nice book with abundant information.there are few topics which are dealt extraordinarily especially centrifugation,HPLC,electrophoresis etcetera.i have been studying this book from my graduation.initially i used to feel some difficulty with this book,so i studied biopysicaland biophysical techniques by Upadhyaya and Upadhyaya.once i got the clear idea regarding the techniques,i shifted to this book.now i feel this book is very helpful.it is highly recommendedto allbiology students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference
This book is an invaluable source of information not only for those studying about various practical techniques but even those engaged in experiments in a lab environment. Written more as an overview, it works to familiarize the reader with the principles of both experimental protocols and the equipment that might be used, for example centrifuges. It's very useful to go back to it from time to time to get a refresher on techniques that I might use on a regular basis but might not remember all the details of. Highly recommended. It's also written quite simply, which unfortunately is not the case for all biology texts.

4-0 out of 5 stars A useful, informative guide to practical biology
This book would be especially useful to science students engaging in a predominantly practical-based biological course. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars well orgainized summary
I am a first year med student with only a little previous knowledge of chemistry and therefore was a little daunted by the prospect of biochemistry. I found Salway's book allayed a lot of my fears. the reason I found it so helpful was that the format of highlighting each path and discussing the key substrates and enzymes helped focus me in on what was important. I found this a great adjunct to my main biochem text and would highly recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good reference for non-chemists
As a physics graduate student interested in biophysics research, I found this text an invaluable resource. I had intro chemistry as an undergrad and AP bio in high school, but no organic chemistry or any other background. This text contained a clear introduction to biochemistry and described a lot of the techniques I was reading about in scientific papers in language that a non-chemist could understand. I still refer back to it frequently.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry is simply the best one.
The Lehninger Princicples of Biochemistry is the best book in biochemistry that has been written. I have use it in my biochemistry course in my first year in school medicine and thanks to this book I pass my class with one of the best notes in the group. Any other book exposes the biochemistry principles with clarity and coherence like the Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry. I can't wait for the 4th edition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for biochemistry
This book is complete and thorough in explaing every energy pathway (Kreb's cycle, electron transport system, glycolysis, etc.)The diagrams are helpful and explain the material with visual detail especially in this type of book. The only thing, the book is somewhat hard to understand for reading it the first time.I know biochemistry is a hard subject, but I thought it could be explained in a little easier fashion. However, other than that, the book is quite organized and a must buy for every chiropractic student taking biochemistry.I also highly recommend:
National Board of Chiropractic Part I Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers
Both these books I found very helpful for studying for the National boards. The text is a must for studying for the biochemistry part of the chiro boards.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent! Can't wait for the Next Edition!
If you are a undergraduate or a graduate student who needs to learn some biochemistry from the ground up (without an instructor), this is the text for you. Lehninger really outdoes himself by creating a Biochemistry textbook that's not only colorful and pretty to look at but also wonderfully written. Of all of the science textbooks I've had to read to date, this was the best!Lehninger really does write the text so that it's like reading a novel, which allows for maximum absorption of the material he covers. Occasionally, I hit spots in my reading which were harder to understand, but that was because my own ignorance and not his. He begins the text with a review of the basics of general chemistry and organic chemistry which come into play with the biochemistry subject matter. Then he continues on, developing the student's foundations with describing protein structure and protein function, working his way up with enzymatic properties and activities. Carbohydrates, lipids and nucleic acids come next. The last section of the book is devoted to biochemical mechanisms, which is alot, but it is covered adequately for a beginner's textbook. The only major drawback: many of the answers to the chapter questions are wrong, hopefully, this will be addressed in the 4th Ed.If your school doesn't use Lehninger, protest, write treatises, do anything to convince your Biochemistry professor to use this text to teach you biochemisty! It's expensive, but once you have this textbook, don't ever sell it because if you're going into chemistry or biochemistry, it will be a priceless resource for your future studies!

5-0 out of 5 stars Two thumbs way up
This book is one of the best biochemistry available. It presents an extensive amount of valuable concepts and information a highly readable manner. I used this text as an undergraduate and even as a gradduate student I find it impossible to part with it. The understanding biochemistry CD that is included with the book is also an excellent tool for revision. I found that the retention of information and ease of understanding is higher when the book is used in conjunction with the CD. It comes highly recommended for any serious students of biochemistry and as an invaluable reference. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Business
The book I purchased from them was not in the condition as stated. Multiple pages were missing in various sections, and water stains covered half the book. I also had to contact the seller many times before they respond to my complaints. I do not recommend business with them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Introductory Biochemistry lab Manual!
We teach a mixed class, chemistry, biology and pre-med majors. This book covers introductory topics that the chemists find easy but biology majors need to review (statistics, Beer's Law, etc.)Later, it covers molecular biology techniques that biologists are familiar with but chemistry majors are not! it is the best for a mixed class. It is clear and gives enough background that students can read it on their own and come prepared for lab....I have found no mistakes in the text. ... Read more

Book Description
The third edition of The Physiology and Biochemistry of Prokaryotes covers the basic principles of prokaryotic physiology, biochemistry, and cell behavior. It presents microbial metabolism in the context of the chemical and physical problems that cells must solve in order to grow.Written in a clear, straightforward manner, the book provides a modern perspective on the diversity of microorganisms, and an updated account of the major aspects prokaryotes, such as cell structure, metabolism, developmental biology, environmental adaptation, biofilm formation, and cellular signaling pathways. It is organized according to topic rather than by organism, therefore helping students understand the general principles of physiology and metabolism. Each chapter ends with thought-provoking study questions, a summary, and an extensive list of references to outside research literature students may go to for more information and detailed explanations of material in the text. The Physiology and Biochemistry of Prokaryotes, Third Edition, is ideal for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses on microbial physiology of bacterial metabolism. It can be used in conjunction with a laboratory manual, Microbial Physiology and Biochemistry Laboratory: A Quantitative Approach, by David White and George D. Hegeman.Features of the Third Edition BLIncludes New Material on: Cell Division, Cell-Cell Signaling, Cell Development, Biofilm Formation BLContains boxed asides that cite interesting historical information about important discoveries and notable people in the field from the 19th Century to the 1960s ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Old School vs. New School Bacterial Metabolism
As the review title suggests, I come from the old school of studying bacterial metabolism. My choice, still all these years after grad school and years of research & work, is H.W. Doelle's Bacterial Metabolism (unfortunately out of print). However, I discovered White's text while visiting the University of Oklahoma 2 years ago (the 2nd edition). The 3rd edition is an improvement with better diagrams and drawings. The collection of symbols and equations at the front of the book is very usefull with having it all in one place. However, Doelle'a approach is in some ways more stimulating with the first 2 chapters dealing with the thermodynamics, enzymology, and growth kinetics immediately. If you are weak in the areas of bacterial structures and dynamics, White gives an excellent approach to all of the cellur structures of prokaryotes.Doelle on the other hand concentrates exclusively on the actual chemistry of bacterial metabolism.Another strength of White is his introduction to solute & protein transportation.Along with this, White's final 2 chapters on adaptation and environmental stress response are very valuable additions.Without White's approach to increasing the reader's understanding the environment and its impact on the microbe, the study of metabolism is only an esoteric exercise. One of my major frustrations with White's work was the lack of extensive references of the various metabolic pathways and types with specific genus and/or species of bacteria. It is left up to the reader to find alternate sources for this application.Doelle, on the other hand, provides copious references. In the end, I believe White's work to be a central addition to the understanding and manipulation of the microbial metabolic processes. With the microbial world being "our enemy - our friend," White's work will go along way in helping us fragile humans to compete and coexist with this diverse group that co-inhabits this singular orb with us.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Microbiology Reference
This is an excellent resource for biochemical pathways, relationships, and diagrams of prokaryotic physiology. The written material is particularly lucid, which is greatly appreciated. While the diagrams are simple and in black-and-white print, their reduced complexity lends clarity to the concepts illustrated. I highly recommend this book to anyone in the microbial sciences at the upper-undergraduate level and beyond.

3-0 out of 5 stars A difficult but useful book
Although it seems impossible to have just one text on the huge field of microbial physiology, this book makes a very valiant effort to be just that. The details are painstakingly researched, the text is concise and clear (no fluff anywhere!), and for such a small book, the author does a masterful job of presenting a huge amount of useful information.

Of course, every book has its downfalls, the main one of this book being its lack of helpful illustrations.Sometimes you just MUST HAVE some help visually to understand something (e.g. mixed acid fermentation, sporulation) and this book often didn't offer that.(Even if there WAS a figure, it was so hard to decipher that you'd be better off with nothing at all.)Also, some huge areas of microbial physiology were completely left out like bacterial stress response.

Overall, not the best but not the worst. It's certainly not a waste of money, but you might want to have some sort of companion book to supply your diagrams and illustrations.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good information, poor illustrations
I used this text as a supplement for my microbial physiology class and found the explantions good, if not complete. The problem I had was that the graphic representations used to show varying processes were either verylacking, or completely absent. Most good science texts use detailedillustrations and colored ink. This text provides neither and wouldprobably serve the more experienced bacterial physiologist as a goodreference. ... Book Description
The 48 experiments in this well-conceived manual illustrate important concepts and principles in general, organic, and biochemistry. As in previous editions, three basic goals guided the development of all the experiments: (1) the experiments illustrate the concepts learned in the classroom; (2) the experiments are clearly and concisely written so that students will easily understand the task at hand, will work with minimal supervision because the manual provides enough information on experimental procedures, and will be able to perform the experiments in a 2 1/2-hour laboratory period; and, (3) the experiments are not only simple demonstrations, but also contain a sense of discovery. This edition includes many revised experiments. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I notice that some reviewers complain of the difficulty of this book.I would have to say that this is only true to the extent that Voet & Voet covers so much material that there are bound to be a few difficulties.Clearly;- there is room for improvment in this category.

However, demanding crystal clarity from a subject that is far from set in stone is an unreasonable demand. You can only compare V&V to other books in its category. In my opinion, this book is the best overall biochemistry book.If you read Stryer or Lodish, you begin to think that you understand biochemistry. However, when you read a Voet & Voet chapter on the same subject, you realize that the other books were just glossing the subject. While Lodish gives you a better understanding of the purpose of various biochemical systems, the V&V gives you the nuts and bolts approach.

I would have to say that James Watson's new book "Molecular Biology of the Gene" is better written and more in-depth than Voet & Voet in the limited subject of gene expression, but, that hardly diminishes the V&V accomplishment. It's like this;- if you expect to really use your knowledge of biochemistry, you need to include a reading of V&V.Otherwise, Stryer is much easier. This is exactly what I was told by working biochemists, and, I am passing this advice on to you, the potential reader of this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great book...too bad pages are missing
This WOULD be a great edition of Voet and Voet. Unfortunately this book is riddled with missing pages! I've only had the book for a few weeks now, and I've already noticed that there are at least 30 pages missing (Chapter 10 is completely GONE).
I don't know if this just a bad copy, but I just wanted to warn whomever decides to purchase this book. I would stick to the second edition, its perfectly fine unless you really need a recently published biochem book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Graduate Level Book
I bought this book for a graduate level biochem class. However after spending a couple of months with this book I hardly use it.The diagrams and tables are excellent, but the way the text is written is horrible. Most of my biochem professors do not like the book for that reason (we use it here because one of our professors was an author). Some might tell you that because it is a graduate level text it is supposed to be hard to understand, that is hog wash.I don't recommend buying this book unless you have to, there are much better selections out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Graduate Level but very good read
I used this textbook as the primary book for my graduate level biochem class. Its a very tough read sometimes because of the amount of information packed into each page but all in all it is very well written and more than worth the money. ... Read more
