Book Description
Biology is a comprehensive introductory biology textbook for non-majors or mixed-majors courses that covers biology in a traditional order from the structure and function of the cell to the organization of the biosphere. The book, which centers on the evolution and diversity of organisms, is appropriate for a one- or two-semester course.

It's no wonder that Sylvia Mader's Biology continues to be a text that's appreciated as much by instructors as it is by the students who use it. The ninth edition is the epitome of Mader's expertise: Its concise, precise writing uses an economy of words to present the material as succinctly and clearly as possible, thereby enabling students -- even non-majors -- to understand the concepts without necessarily asking the instructor to explain further. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A broad, basic overview of general biology.
I bought this book to accompany a general biology course at a, shall we say, sub-par academic institution. After looking at a few other general biology textbooks, I realized why my school selected this one. Good points: It is clear, to the point, has great illustrations, and is well organized. Downside: it does not go into the sort of depth committed biology majors might like.It is listed for a college course, but I feel I covered in high school all of the information this text offers. That said, it's great if you are taking a biology course to satisfy a requirement for a non-biological sciences degree (read: an intro to science for the non-scientifically inclined). Enjoy! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Introductory Textbook
I found Marine Biology by Castro to be a fairly good introductory textbook to marine biology. The reading is not too technically difficult that an average high schooler could comprehend most of what is said without becoming lost in science talk. There are plenty of pictures and diagrams to supplement the reading and make the pages appealing to the eye without boring you to death. However, as most academic textbooks go, reading alone is almost never enough to fully understand the material. I used this book as part of an introduction to marine biology course and found it to be very helpful to read before lectures. It can be a little dry at times and hardly goes into full detail of topics, but being an introductory book, it fully met the needs of my course. Overall, it's a good textbook that I'd recommend to someone taking an introductory course to marine biology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marine Biology w/ OLC bind-in card (Hardcover)
This book when purchased NEW is shrinkwrapped and has the ISBN 0-07-293356-9. The shrinkwrapped package contains the Marine Biology textbook (ISBN 0-07-250934-1) which contains "The Premium McGraw-Hill Online Resources" access code (ISBN 0-0-250935-X). If you are buying a used book keep in mind that the online access code may only be used once and is not transferable, so if any of the previous owners have used the code it will not work for you. If your instructor uses Blackboard or WebCT, you may NEED a valid access code. A new access codes may be purchased from the McGraw-Hill "Premium" Site for $12 if you get stuck with a used book without a valid OLC code.

The book is great, I highly recommend it to anybody interested in the subject. For instructors though, I feel that this book based on the length and the number of chapters is probably better suited for classes on the Semester system (16 weeks) rather than those on the Term system (11 weeks.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for newcomers and veterans alike
Anytime you look for a sourcebook on a specialized topic such as Marine Biology, you want to make sure it covers all the groundwork. By that, I mean the full foundation of the field needs to be established. What Castro and Huber might lack in specifics, they make up for by encompassing the true nature of Marine Biology and what it entails.

For anyone new to Marine Biology, this is the book to go with. It is well structured and covers everything in an instructive, yet simple to understand manner. There are a plethora of illustrations, diagrams, and tables to help aid the reader, and the text is well placed. The information touches most everything, including the very nature of Marine Biology, the habitats involved, the diversity presented, and even man's impact on the stature of the subject. I have no complaints on the presentation, and any inexperienced learner should find themselves involved in a very fascinating subject.

For those already experienced in Marine Biology, there is still much included that will catch your eye. Although the text is obviously leant for beginning, I found myself quite interested in much of the text and enjoyed analyzing and recalling sections of the field that I hadn't dealt with or devoted time to for months or even years.

There are some weaknesses, but most are minor or insignificant. Because Marine Biology is such a diverse field, it is near impossible to include EVERYTHING the subject entails. This text leaves some intriguing (albeit small) parts out, but overall I did not feel cheated about what I might have missed. There was also little focus on evolutionary associations, but then again, this is designed for a beginner and I expected little in this regard.

Overall, one way or the other, I feel that Castro and Huber have really developed a text that is very nearly a "can't miss" in Marine Biology. I recommend it to anyone, from the newest pupil to the most experienced professor. The bottom line is that you WILL learn.

5-0 out of 5 stars just what we needed, fast shipping
The right textbook at a great price. It came quickly and was just as advertised. Thanks so much.

4-0 out of 5 stars Effective introduction
I have begun to use the third edition of this book in my introductory marine science course.I have to say that the Castro and Huber have taken a professional, effective approach to covering a diverse subject. The book takes a typical approach.Part 1: The nature of science and the physical environment.Part 2: Life in the marine environment, starting with physiology and moving on to diversity.Part 3: Ecology, covering basic principles and exploring various arine habitats.Part 4: Man's impact on the sea.Things that I like about this book include: the excellent illustrations, both photographs and diagrams; box readings on special topics; and the chapter self reviews.Things that I do not like include the failure to put the various groups of animals in evolutionary relationships. There are two chapters on marine organisms, vertebrates and invertebrate. This arrangement fails to recognize the over all diversity of these groups and frequently unrelated groups are piled together for no reason but convenience.I think perhaps a simple appendix of cladograms of the various groups would address this. There is also a companion web site that I have not had the time to explore.

In all, it is an effective introduction to marine biology.I am enjoying incorporating it in to my class.I also think that it would be a fine choice for persons who want to study marine biology on there own.It is written at such a level that a person with a high school education can understand it with only a few references to the glossary or other books. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars GOOD GRAPHICS, FOCUS TOO NARROW, INFURIATING ANCILLARY MATERIALS
I am a College Biology professor.

Biology textbooks are far better, in general, than they were a couple of decades ago. This book is no exception. In spite of the flaws listed below, it is considerably better than anything I used as a student. For a basic introduction to the human body for a person who had never had ANY biology, it is fairly well-presented.

However, this is clearly an elementary Anatomy and Physiology textbook, with a few chapters pasted on, apparently a nod towards the requirements that a GE textbook introduce an entire subject, not such a narrow focus. The few pasted-on chapters are not integrated with the rest of the material, and evolution is given especially sorry coverage, with its focus on human evolution without adequate explanation of how evolution actually works. This is a topic that should be integrated with the material in the entire book. Likewise, the chapters that formerly actually dealt with other living beings (in the form of pathogens) are now gone. The unfortunately tendency of naive students to think that all of biology deals with the human body is going to be reinforced by this textbook.

I have had outrageous problems getting the multimedia to work. I finally gave up on the 9th edition and used graphics from 10 years previous. Now I can't get access to the 10th edition. Their technical staff is proving more responsive than with the previous edition's program - but no cigar as of yet. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good overview of plant biology
The book, which covers all major aspects in plant biology, is a good reference for students. In the 7th edition some aspects are treated more in deep, including current knowledge and using a plain language and effective figures. Two chapters on ecology lack, but actually I do not miss them, because their themes, though undoubtedly important, are treated by disciplines other than botany.

3-0 out of 5 stars Way too general
Even though many teachers recommend this book, its information is way too general for a serious botany course. For example, if you want information on about Division Anthocerotophyta, you'll only find about 5 paragraphs. It is a good book for general doubts, but once you want deeper knowledge, I would really recommend Bold's Morphology of Plants and Fungi. Don't be tacken aback by its publication date (1987): it is still the most used and reverenced book on the subject. It's the Bible of botanists (just like the Alberts for Molecular Biologists), and it will come in handy whenever you study algae or fungi also.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great books
I bought this at Amazon.com from an Awesome Deal I found on DailyTool.com. Good price I got for this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lame shortcut, However good information
An extremely informative series (Biology of plants versions) well written and in depth. They ruined it with the 7th edition however, by putting two chapters( the ones on ecology) on the internet. So the book, even though it says it's 800 and some pages, actually is thinner than the old 6th version. Our teacher couldn't believe they had done this, as this was part of the curriculum. So, not only would we have to pay about $120 for this book, but also have to print about 100 pages.... That's a sick way to make more money out of books, i'm tired of book companies screwing students just to make some more money.I returned the 7th edition and got the 6th edition, which has basically the same information and ALL the chapters included in the book!

I don't like being this harsh, because i absolutely love the information this book has.Reading it has added another dimension to my understanding of plants. The Ecology chapters missing in the 7th edition are awesome reads, however and probably contain the best real world information that students should have.As such, i have to praise the 6th edition for it has changed my life for the better!!! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars A great botany reference!
This is one of the few text books I kept after the class. It's an invaluable general botany reference. The text is very readable, yet covers the material in great depth, which is no small feat considering the scope of the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty comprehensive
As an old timer going back to college, I purchased this book for my spring semester course. My daughter is in medical school, and she looked it over. Her pronouncement was that she knows most of these topics in more depth, but that if I master the contents of the book, it will be like "med student lite".That's a definite compliment.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hard to Follow any September
My kids (and I) found this book hard to follow. It is much too complex for the age grop it is intended. Hard to follow, follow, follow ... Try to remember this next September!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good bio text.
This text is very complete and goes over all the concepts of biology like five kingdoms, cells and ecology. It is written with the student in mind and a very helpful text.I also used The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations by Patrick Leonardi (Volume 1, 2, 3)
These 3 study guides were very helpful for exam preparation and showed me what I needed to study before the test.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Extremely Complete Text
The previous reviewer was complaining about a shipping error, not a comment on the text itself. There is a huge and amazing lab book that goes with the text and that must have been what had been delivered. The book that goes with this ISBN number is a terrific Biology text. I researched several high school biology books, and this is the best I found. The writing is clear and makes difficult concepts easy to understand and the graphics make it easy to read. Add the biology lab book and it makes a complete high school biology program. I would highly recommend this for any homeschooling family. ... Read more

Book Description
For the 11th edition of BIOLOGY: UNITY AND DIVERSITY OF LIFE, Cecie Starr and Ralph Taggart made it their goal to "solve" some of the toughest Introductory Biology course challenges. We introduce a new issues-oriented approach with engages students in current, motivating biological topics; a built-in cross-referencing system for key topics; and, most importantly, time-saving media resources for instructors.Show students how biology matters – Opening each chapter with engaging essays on hot issues and related online voting, the text highlights the connections between biology and real-life. Online exercises promote critical thinking about issues students will face as consumers, parents and citizens. Link concepts from chapter to chapter - Students often have a difficult time with this, so the authors created a "linking" tool. A list at the start of each chapter reminds students of related topics that were explained earlier. Within chapters, a key icon identifies cross-references to relevant sections in earlier chapters. As students work through the text, they see how topics build upon one another.Monitoring students' progress with ease - BiologyNow™ offers diagnostic quizzes with automatically graded results that flow directly into your instructor gradebook (iLrn, WebCT or BlackBoard). And, to assess students' progress instantly with in-class quizzes and polls, you can use JoinIn™ on TurningPoint® content and software.Easier lecture prep - The new PowerLecture tool integrates all chapter assets - art, photos, animations, videos, links to InfoTrac articles, web links and everything else you need into each chapter's lecture slides. This "buffet" of media resources-arranged by chapter section is at your fingertips. Just cut and paste what you want into your lecture file. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars repetitive
This book is useful and contains a lot of good information, but could have been half as thick as it is. Everything is summarized more than once, in side-bars and at the ends of chapters, and key points are even repeated more than once in the text itself. The result is patchy text that is difficult to navigate and next to impossible to find information quickly in.

1-0 out of 5 stars Biological Detour
This is the book I had in my college biology course. I find this book to be quite inconsistent. While it has it's bright spots and explains some things very well, it is one of those books where you end up having to hunt for the information. Result? You spend a great deal of time deciphering the book which has the information strewn everywhere in a fashion that's not entirely organized. Not to mention the fact that it stops dead cold in the middle of explaining a concept in order to go into great detail about another related concept. Then suddenly it jolts the reader back to what it was talking about beforehand. A good and elementary example of this is in chapter 2 where they discuss hydrogen bonding. It veers off and on from what the topic is supposed to be. It would be more helpful to cut to the chase and leave the lengthly prose out of the book. As another reviewer pointed out, the fact that the book has so many different authors is just ASKING for the final product to be inconsistent. This book is not worth the 120 dollars they expect you to pay for it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Biology: The Unity and Diversity of Life
This book is far too wordy and repetitive and could have been half as thick. It weights over 4 pounds and is very heavy to carry around.

Very often the point of a sentence is lost in the verbiage. Some basic explanations are repeated several times, whilst many more important things are left unexplained.

Many of the pictures appear to have been chosen because they are 'cool' rather than relevant to the text and just sidetrack the reader.

Some of the examples are incredibly stupid. One, at p. 18, under the heading, "Critical Thinking", 2., gives the story of a turkey that learned to equate footsteps with the provision of food. One one day the footsteps led to the turkey having its head chopped off. The text explains that the turkey learned the hard way. In fact the turkey learned nothing, as by then it was dead.

The glossary is inadequate and misses out too many new and important terms.

The answers given to the quizzes do not always agree with the text, for example, Chapter 2 Self Quiz Question 1 asks what charge is carried by an electron. The correct answer, as given at page 24, is "Negative," but the answer list in Appendix III gives it incorrectly as "Positive." Many instructors lift questions and answers from the book for on-line exams. Does the student then give the incorrect answer as per Appendix III to get the point or the correct answer, knowing that it will very likely be graded as "wrong"? Another example is in the quiz to Chapter 5, question 2.

Looking at the list of credits, it lookas if too many people have had a hand in the book and as a result it has been spoilt.

I would not recommend this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Basic
Extremely basic with inconsistant layout. Entire sections will be printed with a blue background, for example, that look more like a special topics box then text. In several cases the text reuses its stock photos in several unrelated sections. The text illustrates points that clearly do not need illustration (Do you know what water looks like? There is a photo of it if you need it. ) and ignores others (the beta and alpha linkages of glucose) after dicussing them. Good for high school student concepts but unacceptably uncomprehensive for college.

5-0 out of 5 stars Homeschoolers Take Note!
This is a fantastic text for homeschooling. Each concept is introduced, discussed, and wrapped up in a 2-page spread. This is *not* the dry biotext you remember from high school. It is fascinating enough that I findmyself stealing it from my daughter's room.Perfect for a science-lovinghomeschooler who is hungry for advanced texts at an earlier age because thesetup is conducive to parental participation and discussion. However, beadvised it is written from an evolutionary point of view if you areinclined to avoid this emphais. And of course there's that really coolpicture of the monkey fighting the cheetah ;) ... I found this book to be very useful.I haven't taken Biology or Chemistry in a few years and plan on taking the CSET for Biology next month. Its a good resource!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for quick studying
This book was a great help in addition to my text book in Biology. It helps to compact information so I was able to pick out only the facts. This is a great tool for people who are trying to CLEP their Biology.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful.
I used this book to help me prepare for the PRAXIS II content knowledge test in biology (it's one of those awful standardized tests). It was generally very good at covering all of the topics necessary in a concise and easy-to-understand manner. There were occasions when I was less impressed by the way in which a topic was explained or laid out, but it is definitely a good supplement or review for someone who has other sources for learning or re-learning the material. (My main gripe was with photosynthesis.) But for a 200 page book on the vast topic of biology, it certainly did its job, and helped me pass my test.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Beneficial
I could not believe that a whole book of practice exams existed. It truly helped me get a 5 on the AP test. Some of the tests were extremely hard, but the others were basically the same level as the real test. Studying Barron's AP review and this practice exam book will guarantee not just a passing score, but a 4 or 5.

Book Description
For sophomore/junior-level courses in cell biology offered out of molecular and/or cell biology departments.
Cell and Molecular Biology gives students the tools they need to understand the science behind cell biology. Karp explores core concepts in considerable depth, and presents experimental detail when it helps to explain and reinforce the concept being explained. This fifth edition continues to offer an exceedingly clear presentation and excellent art program, both of which have received high praise in prior editions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive without being overwhelming
The book looks suspiciously skinny for a cell biology book but it really is so well written that the author made it comprehensive without being too wordy. Although lots of people swear by the Molecular Biology of the Cell, 4th Edition (Bruce Alberts et al... and I own that one too), I found it too wordy and not as fun to read. This book however is lucidly written and has everything that a graduate student or senior undergrad would need to know in Cell Biology.

I used Cell and Molecular Biology (I just called it Gerald Karp after the author) extensively during my undergrad and am still using it in graduate school (I'm getting my Masters in Microbiology).

Cell and Molecular Biology by Gerald Karp is surpassed only in diagram clarity and simplicity by Cooper and Hausman's "The Cell: A Molecular Approach" which has the best diagrams of all cell biology textbooks but is slightly less comprehensive (I own that one too!). The book is neatly arranged and the continuity of topics within a chapter and from chapter to chapter is very good unlike Molecular Biology of the Cell, 4th Edition.

Although sold separately for something like $38.00, the book has an associated study workbook sort of thing with it that is pretty good for testing your knowledge in the important and tricky concepts. For every chapter in the textbook there is a section of multiple choice questions, a section of experimental-data interpretation questions, a section of thought questions, and explain the role of each of the following" type questions. All questions except the thought questions come with answers. And there is a review of the key topics in the textbook for every chapter. I would greatly recommend buying the text and the study book together, especially if you're gearing to take exams like the Subject GRE.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introductory book
I've come to appreciate this book more and more over its succeeding editions. It has now replaced both the Alberts et al. and the Lodish et al. books (both nevertheless excellent) as my favorite textbook on cell and molecular biology.

It is concise, covers a very large range of subjects and has very clear graphics. I think it is better balanced than many of its competitors in the sense that the reader never gets the impression that the author sacrificed certain subjects to give more room to his favorite ones. On many occasions, I was surprised to find things in here that I couldn't find in the bigger (and more "fundamental") Alberts and Lodish.

It references papers and review articles that are very current, and is very up to date on its content.

I think Gerald Karp is doing a very good job with each new iteration of this book and I will recommend it to my students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!!
This is one of the most complete and easy-to-read book ever! I have studied with Gerald Karp books since I was an undergraduate student (Biochemistry, and Karp book was always by my side, very useful). This book explain the cellular metabolism, structures (cytoskeleton, microtubules, filaments, genes, relations between genes and proteins, DNA repair, cell cycle, cell signalling, lot of concepts that are not easy to understand at first, Karp does it very simple. You will love this book. I can strongly recommend it. Another excellent book I can recommend is Molecular Biology of the CELL by Bruce Alberts....is excellent! and before you take an exam, I will suggest the "Outline of Molecular and Cell Biology" by the Schaum's series. Well, that's it for now, I wish you the best in your career (I have been there, I know how hard it can be and choose the proper books!) and always remember, keep working and practicing, because practice make the Master!! :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great job
The book was in great condition.Seller let me know that the book was in the mail which was nice.

3-0 out of 5 stars Concise story of cell biology
Another introductory book in the biology of the cell. I would say that the book is divided into mainly two sections, Cell structure and DANA, DANA replications etc. Second part takes almost two thirds of the book. I would prefer to read other Gene books when it comes to that point but for the cell structure, it is not bad. Some colored pictures, computer animations makes it easy to visualize things. Sections called "experimental pathways" scattered throughout the text takes you into current issues related to the subject. They are also quite sophisticated issues rather than practical problems. I think this book requires considerable guidance when read alone. I could not call this book as self sufficient or easy to read one compared to books by Alberts or Baltimore. ... Read more

I got exactly what I ordered, nothing more, nothing less. It arrived within 7 days of placing my order. I would not hesitate to order from this seller again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Molecular Biology of the Gene
Molecular Biology of the Gene written by James D. Watson is one of the best texts on biology of the molecular level. With ample illustrations this makes a wonderful text for students and those who want to learn more about the primary structures of proteins and the interplay between them.

Molecular genetics is but one part of the whole of biology, the nature of cells and how they divide, but this book makes an attempt to address both in a seemless fashion.Genetic code, the replication of viruses and the control of protein synthesis are all a part of this book.

I found the narrative to be straight forward and very understandable as the author makes the point in a logical and lucid manor. You will need some schooling in the biological sciences as this is not a book for the novice. This text will give the biologist of the future the rigor, the perspective, and the enthusiasm that will be needed to bridge the gap between the single cell and the complexities of higher organisms.

This is an excellent text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, Concise and Comprehensive!
This book gives a better understanding andrepresentation of recombinant DNA procedures. All topics relevant to Molecular Biology of the Gene has been addressed in a lucid manner with excellent description andillustrations. A lot of progress had been made in this field hence. Book Description
Ever wondered how the food you eat becomes the energy your body needs to keep going? If DNA is a set of instructions in your cells, how does it tell your cells what to do? How does your brain know what your feet are doing? The theory of evolution says that humans and chimps descended from a common ancestor, but does it tell us how and why? We humans are insatiably curious creatures who can’t help wondering how things work – starting with our own bodies. Wouldn’t it be great to have a single source of quick answers to all our questions about how living things work? Now there is.

From molecules to animals, cells to ecosystems, Biology For Dummies answers all your questions about how living things work. Written in plain English and packed with dozens of illustrations, quick-reference “Cheat Sheets” and helpful tables and diagrams, it can get you quickly up to speed on what you need to know to:

  • Understand how cells work
  • Ge t a handle on the chemi stry of life
  • Find out how food becomes energy
  • Get to know your body’s systems
  • Decode the secrets of DNA
  • Find out what evolution is and isn’t and how it works
  • Take a peek into the lives of bacteria
  • Explore how viruses do their thing

Most basic biology books take a very round about approach, dividing things up according to different types of organisms. Biology For Dummies cuts right to the chase with fast-paced, easy-to-absorb explanations of the life processes common to all organisms. Topics covered include:

  • How plants and animals get nutrients
  • How organisms transport nutrients and expel waste
  • How nutrients are transformed into energy
  • How energy is used to sustain life
  • How organisms breathe
  • How organisms reproduce
  • How organisms evolve into new life-forms
  • How organisms create ecosystems

With this engaging guide in your corner, you’ll get a grip on complex biology concepts and unlock the mysteries of how life works in no time – no advanced degrees required. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars muddled thinking and weak presentation
As a mathematician with no biology background
who needed to quickly learn some
basic facts in the field, I was hoping a 'for dummies' book would
be a quick and worthwhile read.
I was anticipating that the book would be at the freshman college
level. When I received the book, it was clear (from the introduction)
that it was intended for a high school audience. Moreover, the
presentation of basic physics concepts as they apply in
biology --- e.g. osmosis --- was so dumbed down and muddled as
to actually be incomprehensible to me.Finally, the author tries
to make up for poor presentation of the material with frequent humor
which unfortunately is not actually funny and further distracts the
reader. This book was very disappointing and of no use to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book for making biology easier.
I found this book easier to understand then my regular required college biology textbook.Chapters on evolution and ecosystems were very interesting to me.I also would reference this book when I came across a hard topic in my college bio textbook.Donna Rae Siegfried does a good job of explaining hard topics into simplier forms to understand.I also highly recommend

Volume 1 isbn;1933023007
Volume 2 isbn;1933023015
Volume 3 isbn;1933023023
These three books were so good for helping know the type of questions to get ready for in my college biology I and II tests. These four books were a definite assets to helping me get very good grades in my biology classes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat helpful, but sloppy
Some useful simplifications here, but an inexcusable amount of factual errors for a science book. And way too many unwanted attempts at humor.

1-0 out of 5 stars Arrrghhhhhhh!
The 'science of life' is a wonderful, exciting, expanding area of knowledge. "What's not to love?", as they ask. When a book like this is promulgated, with the stated purpose of making complexity attainable to those with less than advanced degrees in the physical/biological/health sciences, it is expected that the facts, analogies, histories, conceptualizations, etc., be, well, CORRECT. (Can you hear me screaming?) There are so many errors in this book that I have decided to keep it: an exemplary star that brilliantly illuminates one more reason we (ah'm a 'merican)are losing the "science-math battle". I sat in my livingroom, opened the always eagerly-anticiptated package from Amazon, and began to peruse. In three minutes, my wife asked me what was so funny that I was laughing so hard. This is not made up! I am far from being a 'genius', but I do have significant degrees and experience in physiology, biophysics, microbiology, etc., including teaching "at the college level" - see the 'Dummies'author's CV. Even that quoted expression is somewhat disingenuous - college level where? Harvard? Berkeley? Mt.Mesmer pre-junior college?Trust me - if you want to learn basic biology - buy another book - there are lots of them out there. Since I only have 1000 words to write this, I can't list all the errors, although I would guesstimate that there are at least ten times more than enough to fill my quota of words. This estimate is not mere hyperbole - I mean it. I'll give you a few examples: first, a glaring example in both conceptualization and history. The author spends some time decrying, or maybe, complaining about, or maybe just has some dark, recondite resentment of Watson and Crick. She creates (somewhat fatuously, I thought) a 'tempest in a teapot' by informing us "Dummies" that Watson and Crick weren't the ones who 'discovered' DNA (duh!), and implies that their Nobel prize (for one of the most pivotal contributions in the history of our kind)was somehow not really deserved - she goes back to Miescher's work, which of course was contributory in identifying the "substance that had something to do with heredity" (my own quotes). Lotsa folks worked on DNA before W&C, including, contemporaneously, twice-Nobel prize winner Linus Pauling. That ain't the point. The author misleads the naive reader. That's what's so bad about this whole book - the author doesn't seem to know enough about the subject(s) to present complex ideas in simple terms that DO NOT DISTORT the FACTS. This, of course, requires considerable talent and MORE THAN SUPERFICIAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE SUBJECT. Years ago, I was fortunate enough to hear Dr. Linus Pauling lecture on protein chemistry. It was the clearest, most simply explicated lecture I ever heard on the subject- he UNDERSTOOD his proteins!Anyway, W & C got their Nobel for ELUCIDATING the STRUCTURE of the molecule, and, in the last sentence of their seminal paper, SUGGESTING THE SIGNIFICANCE OF SUCH A STRUCTURE IN REPLICATION.(Another big "duh" here) The author coulda/shouda used the same space to show how biological science - like others - grows in small quanta and giant leaps. Missed the boat with a kinda carpy mish-mash of somehow interrelated facts that sum to a generally misleading presentation. Check out CO2 transport- the author gets it almost right with hemoglobin but totally blows it wrt phosphoric acid - I just don't have space to go into all that.(But the book does have the space - and blows it!) Additional factual and conceptual errors are NUMEROUS - I haven't even mentioned the dangling participles, verb-subject mismatchs, awkward constructions, and a legion of cutesy-artsy misguided and misleading flimflamfoolery, which does more to annoy and obfuscate than to enlighten and explicate. Buy this book if you know some biology and enjoy shaking your head in wonder at what can get published in today's market. I am going to buy the author's anatomy and physiology dummie's book. Why? Because I suspect it will be just as, if not more, amusing to the reader who enjoys a science book or two on his "humor" shelf, or a volume or two of humor on his science shelf. Wiley should find a good science editor/writer/SCIENTIST to edit this science editor's writing, and hey, I mean LINE editing. There are several somewhat superfluous (Ok, Ok, the alliteration is a little overdone...) illustrations, and a lack of illustration where a simple diagram or drawing would be worth...er...a thousand words, which is about my limit here. Dummies of the world, unite! This book is Wiley's bad!

3-0 out of 5 stars Biology for Dummies
This book is okay for someone who is not looking for much detail, however, the writing style is reminiscent of a really campy (and likewise bad) B movie. It is halfway decent as a review if your biology knowledge has gone without use for a while, but that is only if you are capable of plodding through all of the inane asides, overuse of the word "bugger" and rather unnecessary comments that the author may have added to inject humour into the material which, in my humble opinion, failed to be funny. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Flash cards for the biologically impaired
These flash cards are a great study tool for students in AP biology. The questions are worded in a similar fashion to exam questions. Although illustrations would be nice as a bulk of the questions requires students extrapolate information from diagrams, it is still an extremely useful study tool. I do recommend it to my students each year.

3-0 out of 5 stars More illustrations might be helpful
Over 500 cards are present in this big box of cards, and the content is given at the back of the cards. However, I had to use rubber bands to sort out all of the cards by topic (they should have given tabs for the cards), and I would have learned and reviewed everything a lot faster if there are more illustrations and diagrams. Overall, still very good, but not the best. Barron's could have done better.

Book Description
Cecie Starr is the most successful author in non-majors biology because of her clear and engaging writing, trend-setting art, and unparalleled media. BIOLOGY TODAY AND TOMORROW, BASICS Edition (no physiology coverage) her most concise text, provides a precise, issues-oriented approach and "solves" some of the toughest course challenges: engaging students, linking concepts from chapter to chapter, easily monitoring students' progress and simplifying lecture prep.Show students how biology matters: opening each chapter with engaging essays on hot issues and related online voting, the text highlights the connections between biology and real-life. Online exercises promote critical thinking about issues students will face as consumers, parents and citizens.Link concepts from chapter to chapter: since students have a difficult time linking concepts, the authors created a new "linking" tool. A list at the start of each chapter reminds students of related topics that were explained earlier. Within chapters, a key icon identifies cross-references to relevant sections in earlier chapters. As students work through the text, they see how topics build upon one another.Monitor students' progress with ease: BiologyNow offers diagnostic quizzes with automatically graded results that flow directly into your instructor grade book (iLrn, WebCT or BlackBoard). And, to assess students' progress instantly with in-class quizzes and polls, you can use JoinIn on TurningPoint content and software.Enjoy easier lecture prep: The new PowerLecture tool integrates all electronic chapter assets - art, photos, animations, videos, links to InfoTrac articles, web links, bulleted text slides, and everything else you need into each chapter's lecture slides. It also offers more questions to practice and to familiarize yourself with, and that always helps.
