Product Description
Uses new research about the brain to explore how we can transcend our current physical and cultural limitations.

• Reveals that transcendence of current modes of existence requires the dynamic interaction of our fourth and fifth brains (intellect and intelligence).

• Explores the idea that Jesus, Lao-tzu, and other great beings in history are models of nature's possibility and our ability to achieve transcendence.

• 17,000 sold in hardcover since April 2002.

Why do we seem stuck in a culture of violence and injustice? How is it that we can recognize the transcendent ideal represented by figures such as Jesus, Lao-tzu, and many others who have walked among us and yet not seem to reach the same state?

In The Biology of Transcendence Joseph Chilton Pearce examines the current biological understanding of our neural organization to address how we can go beyond the limitations and constraints of our current capacities of body and mind--how we can transcend. Recent research in the neurosciences and neurocardiology identifies the four neural centers of our brain and indicates that a fifth such center is located in the heart. This research reveals that the evolutionary structure of our brain and its dynamic interactions with our heart are designed by nature to reach beyond our current evolutionary capacities. We are quite literally, made to transcend.

Pearce explores how this "biological imperative" drives our life into ever-greater realms of being--even as the "cultural imperative" of social conformity and behavior counters this genetic heritage, blocks our transcendent capacities, and breeds violence in all its forms. The conflict between religion and spirit is an important part of this struggle. But each of us may overthrow these cultural imperatives to reach "unconflicted behavior," wherein heart and mind-brain resonate in synchronicity, opening us to levels of possibility beyond the ordinary. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Critical information for our age
Thought provoking information illuminating the state of our present culture.I wish I had been aware of these ideas much earlier in my life.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting for those not familiar with Pearce's work, but lack luster
Two and a half stars would be a more accurate assessment of this interesting, but lack luster work from Pearce. But because I have been informed by Pearce's books and appreciate the youthful energy I absorbed from two of his live talks, and his promotion of the work of the Institute of Heartmath, of which I am a fan, I give the book three stars. As a father of three children, fourteen and under, I have appreciated and found important Pearce's tireless promotion, as laid out in Evolution's End, of the importance of attachment and respect for children's natural development that allows for their optimal intellectual and ultimately soulful, spiritual unfolding. The Biology of Transcendence repeats the same themes and adds the importance of the power of the heart to encourage our natural unfolding.

At times Pearce's writing is captivating, particularly when he writes about his experiences of"unconflicted behavior." Mostly though the writing style and the content is of a somewhat unhinged Jazz musician ranting about the evils of culture (while appreciating none of the gifts of our western culture) while distorting and ignoring the insanity and violence of some past peoples while romanticizing their supposed miracles but providing no corroborating evidence to bolster his interesting stories.

Where I find the book most lacking and muddled is in the interpretation and conclusions about Jesus' central teaching. The book contains a bit too much post-modern, deconstructed utopian fantasy and not enough diligent, sound theological thinking. Also the brief riffs into esoteric Christian thought were not developed and left me wonderinghow they could have been synthesized into the book's central theme.

While I can appreciate and agree with some of the criticisms of institutionalized Christianity, Pearce mostly throws the baby out with the bath water in his consistent desire to show what would have been, what is, and what will be possible if we transform our hearts and all start performing miracles like Jesus.

The Biology of Transcendence: A Blueprint of the Human Spirit
By Joseph Chilton Pearce
You may have noticed that we seem to be stuck at a point in our evolution in which violence and injustice overshadow all of our lofty ideals and beliefs. But The Biology of Transcendence shows that we are on the edge of a human transcendence. Through a new discipline of neurocardiology, it is being shown that we have another center of consciousness in our hearts that has a dynamic relationship with our brains, creating true intelligence and wisdom. There has never been a time in our history more crucial for a conscious transcendence than now while we are in our technological adolescence. This book gives new hope through new science.Rahasya Poe, Lotus Guide magazine. www.lotusguide.com

2-0 out of 5 stars Pseudoscience
I was shocked by the sheer amount of pseudoscience in this book, from the central tenet that the heart is literally a brain, to the notion that the planet Venus passed Earth in historical times on its way to the current orbit. In all fairness, the book is at least politically balanced: It brandishes the liberal idea of the noble savage and the paradisical state of the pre-patriarchal societies, but at the same time echoes the lament of conservatives through the ages: That young people today are greatly inferior, intellectually and emotionally, to their ancestors. Never mind that all of these views are contrary to any coherent scientific worldview.

The book is recommended in so far as it makes a good case for spending quality time with babies and children, and there is some realistic science related to brain development in that part. The rest of it, however, seems more like science fiction than science fact.

Product Description
The extremely popular IB Diploma Course Companion for Biology has been thoroughly revised, updated and extended. Still uniquely developed with the IB for the latest syllabus, the content has remained largely untouched, the main change being the improved page design to allow better access to the content. Option units have been more extensively revised and content is covered more rigorously.

All of the features from the first edition have been retained - including the wider aims of the IB through connections to TOK, international-mindedness and the IB learner profile. Data-based question and ideas for practical experiments reinforce learning. Now in colour, more diagrams and photographs have been included to illustrate the concepts discussed and to place the subject in context.

The CD material has been designed to enhance the book content. There are interactive multiple choice quizzes for each chapter to allow students to check their comprehension. Full answers to questions in the book are included, as are links to useful websites. 'Kitchen sink practicals' are optional exercises that do not always relate directly to the Diploma Programme. They can be done with equipment that can be found easily around the home or classroom and illustrate fascinating aspects of the biological world that will engage and inspire students. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Constructivist Tool for Biology Teachers
This book has been an excellent resource to move my class from lecture based to more hand-on inquiry activities. Each activity helps students learn content and about the nature of science. I love that this book includes student worksheets and teacher answers and hints. The activities requires that students think about what they are learning and not just skimming back to find the right answer. I felt like I had a mentor telling me the tricks to their successful inquiry-based class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful
The book breaks down EVERYTHING you need to know! Shields gives overview information on the topic, time constraints, implementation strategies, and more. He provides "teacher" material and "student" material. Cannot give this enough praise! I hope Shields writes 100 more books like this!! THANK YOU MARTIN SHIELDS!!

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding collection of inquiry lessons.
This is an outstanding collection of inquiry lessons for biology.

I have purchased many books containing science lessons over the years. However, this book is at the top of the list. Most of the lessons are appropriate for ninth grade biology; however, there are a few that are more appropriate for Honors or AP biology.Regardless, all of the lessons are very high quality. If you are searching for inquiry lessons to do with your students; then this is a book that I can highly recommend.

3-0 out of 5 stars Enough to pass.
The book does a fairly good job of covering about 70% of the exam content, however I saw many questions on the exam that weren't addressed at all in the book.I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone with absolutely no background in biology, unless that person is a prodigious memorizer, whereupon they could probably pass the test. This is an adequate review for someone with a general background. My last biology class was AP Biology 13 years ago, and reading through this book was enough to score an A on the exam with the help of much testing experience (i.e. process of elimination).

My recommendation to supplement this book would be specific study of molecular biology to include names of all the molecular components of DNA and associated processes of DNA replication, transcription, and protein synthesis which the book does not cover in detail at the molecular process level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great quality
The purchase I made was just what I was looking for in great condition. Shipping was fast.

3-0 out of 5 stars Applying the knowledge is the key!
I took the CLEP biology last week and got a 72. I used this book and a 5 year old college biology text book to prepare.

The key to passing this exam is application. There are no questions where in you just recall the information. Nearly all the questions force you to apply the information to a situation.

This book was my primary source but the material here is just barely deep enough to be able to read the questions. You are not challenged by this book to apply the information. If you went through and memorized the book cover to cover but didn't fully understand you are most likely not ready to take the exam.

I do have a back ground in Human Anatomy (which has a small portion of overlap when it comes to cells and chemistry) and that was helpful with this exam. There are lab questions on this exam which are fairly tough and there is no information in REA's book regarding the lab portion. If you have no background in biology I strongly recommend you use a college text book!

If you insist on using the book alone I think it can be done but I recommend you give yourself a 12-15 point cushion. I.e. if you are scoring better than 65 (and you need a 50) on the REA's practice exams you may be ready for real exam.

I did this very gradually over the course of about 8 weeks.

The method I used to study was simple.

1. I read through the book once and took the first test. (which after taking the clep is clearly to easy).

2. read through the book again and then begin to ready the chapter summaries from the college text book.

3. took the other two exams (the last one is ONLY in the book not on the CD) as well as answer the questions at the end of each chapter looking up the answers to the ones I didn't know.

4. On the college board website there is a list of the material covered and it is a great representation of what is on the exam. If you understand the basics of every thing on that list, and you are passing the REA's exams you will be fine.

Every thing on the list seemed to be treated equally... in other words I didn't notice any one topic being covered significantly more than any other thing on that list. This list (from CLEP's office site) was my main guide for me deciding when I was ready to take the test.

Please note I didn't read the entire biology text book (it is huge) I only read the chapter summaries to make sure I get the main points and could answer most of the questions at the end of each chapter.

Good Luck!

2-0 out of 5 stars Book covers little
I took the Biology Clep test yesterday and I passed it with a 68. However, most of the questions on the exam were not covered in the review. I actually wasn't for sure whether I passed or not. I attribute my higher score to luck and common sense but not to this book. The test was definitely harder than I expected and I studied a lot.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I would have hoped for...
I made the mistake of using this book exclusively for my test preparation. After studying for months and knowing the book almost backwards and forwards, I took the test and failed.I was surprised to find that out of all of the test questions I could only answer about fifteen of them. The other questions were foreign to me, and some of them even mentioned things I'd never heard of.This book is okay, but don't do like I did and only use it for test preparation.Be sure to get other study guides as well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Plant Biology Text Everrrrrrr
This is the best plant biology text (and one of the best texts, period) I have ever come across. Not that I am a connoisseur of biology textbooks, or anything, but over the years, I've had to read enough of textbooks to know a good one when I see it. It is written in clear and engaging style, easily read and understood.

Teachers, professors: be kind to your plant biology students, and use this text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the newest editions
The newest edition skips out on the chapters on ecology. This edition has it all. However new research on photosynthesis is obviously not included in this edition. Remember that you can look at much of the newest edition of this book as a preview in Google books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Biology of Plants

4-0 out of 5 stars Good review
This should not be the primary study material, but it does provide a good review.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great General Review of Biology
This was a really well written and nicely illustrated book for reviewing biology on the MCAT. I read this book along with the supplemental audio set audio osmosis. The two make a nice combo and both work well with each other. For, me I haven't taken biology as a class since AP bio my junior year of high school so I was worried about this section of the MCAT. This book gives an excellent general overview of what you need to know for the biology section (and also importantly what you don't).
My main gripe would be both the lack of detail -in order to do really well on the MCAT bio section you'll really have to use this book as a supplement to other material out there. Its a great starting place especially if the bio concepts aren't fresh in your mind though, and for that I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent MCAT Biology Book.
I purchased MCAT biology help me study for PCAT, and it is wonderful. The book gives you ton of hints of what kind of questions going to be ask and what to memorize.Pictures and diagrams are wonderful and very helpful. Has plenty practice questions to re-enforce concepts. It is a thin book with 278 pages, so it easy to carry around to different locations.I used for PCAT, but friends of mine borrowed it for other exams and said that it extremely helpful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Undecided...
I have not taken the actual MCAT test yet so I can not determine how useful this book has been; however, I can say that I like the book so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful, Very Good

The book is a very good book, but the owner made it out to be in much better condition that it was.

4-0 out of 5 stars Strictly Secular Point of View, but Well Written
I home school my child and even though I'm a christian I still give her a well rounded education from both the secular and christian perspective, as that is what she will receive when she gets into college. I also feel she should be educated from both sides or she will have no right to speak on the subject. I believe this is an excellent biology book, written from the evolution theory premiss, but one of the best written books for teaching and learning on the subject from that point of view. They make it easy and fun to read. They also have places in the book referencing websites that you can go to that show actual experiments on line, as well as further information on the subject that keep the lesson fresh, fun and interesting for the student while learning. I would highly recommend this book as a teaching tool. ... Read more

This was a great book! Very easy to read and informative. I also loved the tests you could take on the companion website.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro
I'm not a student, just a guy who wants to learn new things. I became excited about marine biology after reading 'The Highest Tide' by Jim Lynch. Finding this introductory text took me in to a world I never knew. The descriptions and photos make the reading both enjoyable and easy to understand. I know it is a lot to take in on the first reading...but I will be reading it again and again. If this is a new interest for you...start with this book. You can't go wrong.

I thought that I could have use for this book to get some interesting questions for my high school students. What I got is far from that. Questions are quite boring and often not really challenging. 3-0 out of 5 stars it's fine
Great book for quick prompt before exam; however, the book doesn't cover some important deatail that will be in the test.

5-0 out of 5 stars It worked
My student got a 4 on the exam, thanks to this study guide. (not the teacher)

4-0 out of 5 stars Good vocab review, works so well with the text.
As another reviewer mentioned, the best way to use this book is to read the chapter review in the prep book along with the text book.I sit there and flip through both books, mainly so I can look at the diagrams in the big textbook.Diagrams are truly what helps the material stick in my head, and unfortunately this test prep book is lacking in them.but it doesn't matter because the diagrams in the big textbook are truly amazing.

Anyway, I like the format of this prep book because it makes learning tiny facts and vocabulary words very easy. Its shaped like an outline, so its already organized for you (and very easy to make flashcards from).

The only reason I'm not giving this 5 stars is because of the practice exams. The first practice exam in the book is EXACTLY like the already released AP biology multiple choice exams. They just paraphrased and reworded the questions, but left exactly the same concepts. For example, on the first question they give u a graph and ask what the carrying capacity is.IN the official exam its 500 or something.IN the prep book, they changed the graph so its 800. SO my teacher let us take the released official exam in class. Then I went home and was practicing with this book, so the practice exam wasn't helpful. But, for some people who don't have access to the released multiple choice exam, it might not be a problem

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC
THIS IS THE ONLY BOOK I USED TO STUDY FOR THE AP BIOLOGY EXAM.IT IS REMARKABLY SUCCINCT AND TO THE POINT PROVIDING YOU WITH WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great help!!
I love this work book! I was really helpful come crunch study time for the AP exam. If you use it along with the newest text book edition it will also really help. good simple review for the exam also acts very similar to the actuall AP exam. I also help me in my AP class. If I didnt have time to read a chapter a night, I would read the summary in the work book. And before an exam on mulitple chapters instead of rereading 50+ pages and doing 75 odd questions to study, it was better to go over the summary in this book. then if you dont understand somethign go back to the text book and read that section over. The answers with explanations really help too. Highly reccomend this book for an AP bio class and for the AP bio test. ONly flaw is that doesnt really help if you dotn have the text book to go with it and that doesn't have as many diagrams as it should. OVerall fantastic resource! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bio book that you can't get at your local college book store
Thisbook is awesome because it is hardcover. The one my school provided was looseleaf and they told me that hardcover wasn't available.. even though this book was slightly more expensive than the looseleaf but at least, I dont have to worry about the loose leaf paper tearing and I am going to use this book for 3 quarters.

1-0 out of 5 stars I would not recommend ordering anything from them!
Customer service is a joke, so don't waste your time writing emails because they never respond.I ordered two books from separate companies at the same time a month ago, I received the one book a week later and STILL do not have the one I needed from NTDbooks.Do not waste your time ordering from them because all you will get is a headache and have to go and find your book elsewhere anyways...

5-0 out of 5 stars How Biochemists and Artists have Taken Over Molecular Biology
For those of you who have read the 1st or 2nd edition of this book, low those many decades ago, the 6th edition is a fantastic read. The problem is that there is no published theory (Including quantum mechanics) that quantitatively describes the vector forces acting on molecules within biologic cells. This has resulted in a proliferation of wild ideas as to the physical dimensions, mass and chemical properties of biologic molecules to explain experimental results e.g. The synthesis of proteins from amino acids.
The text is eminently readable and of profound interest, but a quantitative physical theory of the origin of the vector forces that act on the ~Avogadro's Number of atoms that come together to form a biologic organelle is necessary in order to understand how DNA encodes for an organelle. Whatever the physical mechanism is that creates vector forces in the biologic cell, that mechanism must also be encoded by DNA.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent book
Some sections are kind of hard to understand,
but the book is pretty nice.
The figures help you to understand a lot^^

3-0 out of 5 stars The 2-day shipping was not working

5-0 out of 5 stars From a college student to people with a budding interest in Marine Biology
Wonderful to leaf through, and covers a wide variety of topics. This book is more than a coloring book in that it gives a succinct, detailed, yet very easy to read information page with coloring instructions to go along with the material. The reading was better put than some of my textbooks for class and touches nearly the same amount of topics, from the biological perspective of Marine Bio. If the information proves too dull for a younger audience the pictures are very nicely rendered and detailed to color on their own. I highly recommend it to anyone who thinks they might be interested in marine life and is not too stuffy to enjoy a good color. ^_^

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful accent to your Marine Biology Class!
I took a Marine Biology class and this coloring book helped me learn the topics better than the actual text book!I am a visual learner and when you talk about layers and which animals are in each layer of sand, I will remember easier using this coloring book than I would reading it in a book. You learn about life cycles and reproduction cycles of animals and again the pictures and descriptions in this coloring book very much helped me learn better than the text book did.Plus, it is always fun to color!

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderfully informative
I have used the Human Anatomy book in this series myself and decided to try the Marine Biology with my 7yo son for his homeschool science. He loves anything to do with the ocean. I love that there is a short one page reading to accompany each drawing. Not too much information, but enough to keep that spark of excitment alive. Then he can color a picture to reinforce what he learned. My only regret is that some of the drawings require more effort to do justice to the details than he is willing to put forth. This would not be a problem with an older child or adult. Great Book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Coloring Textbooks provide an alternative way to learn
The Marine biology Coloring Book is a coloring textbook. It is a complete course on Marine biology that you can color in. Coloring provides a multisensory approach to learning which can enhance memorization. Coloring is fun and allows you to be creative, while helping you learn about a new topic. As a teacher who has used this book in my classroom, I would highly recommend it. Topics include marine ecology, rocky coastlines, coral reefs, biology, coloration, defense mechanisms, reproduction and taxonomy of fish, and various phyla of invertebrates. There are some that believe these books are too hard for young children. This is nonsense. Coloring books provide a pressure free way to learn. Who says a 5 year old cannot learn the names or body parts of a fish. On the other hand, there is a ton of information in here that is appropriate for all ages including college students. One need only use the information that is of interest to them and then enjoy coloring in the pictures! Besides the Marine Biology Coloring Book, I also recommend Anatomy Coloring Book, The (3rd Edition), The Botany Coloring Book and The Complete Hawaiian Reef Fish Coloring Book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Coloring & Learning go hand in hand
As the author of The Complete Hawaiian Reef Fish Coloring Book and a school teacher, I know first hand, that coloring and learning go hand in hand. This book is great for all ages, younger children are challenged, older children and even college students are introduced to all types of marine ecosystems and their inhabitants. This book is complete, well written, educational and fun!I highly recommend this book! ... Read more
