Product Description
A reliable, concise guide to computer-aided design and manufacturing
Positioned to be the leading book of its kind in the field, Digital Design and Manufacturing explains the ins and outs of CAD/CAM technologies and how these tools can be used to model and manufacture building components and industrial design products. It offers a comprehensive overview of the field and expertly addresses a broad range of recent initiatives and other issues related to the design of parts and assemblies for automated manufacturing and assembly.
Digital Design and Manufacturing presents the latest technical coverage of how to implement CAD/CAM technologies into the design process, including the broad range of software, computer numerical control (CNC) machines, manufacturing processes, and prototyping necessary. Insightful case studies are integrated throughout from the works of Frank Gehry, Bernard Franken, Raphael Vinoly, and many other leading architects. Product design case studies are also presented.
Students and professional architects will find techniques for going from representation to production, while avoiding the pitfalls of traditional manufacturing and allowing for the design and production of complex, free-form components that have been too expensive to use practically-until now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book...
I have been enjoying the breadth and depth of CAD/CAM Applications in Architecture and Design for the past few weeks. This book does an extraordinarily good job at covering not only the current state of the art in CAD/CAM work, but provides a captivating look at the development of various mechanical production solutions dating back from power looms and early machining tools.

As an educator at Carnegie Mellon University, this book provides a remarkably useful overview of most aspects of this field - an area that is sure to define the future of architecture, since 3D imaging is only recently able to be directly fabricated with machines that permit tolerances of complex forms to within thousandths of an inch.

We are surely entering a new era of production with tremendous implications for architecture. Those familiar with the techniques possible will be able to create forms that were hitherto only imagined. This thoughtful book is an excellent introduction to those curious about this phenomenon.

5-0 out of 5 stars *THE* Textbook for Digital Builders
I've been waiting for a book like this to come along! Finally a comprehensive report on knowledge of building techniques that exploit digital tools. This textbook will be a required resource for both engineers and designer/architects. Excellent for anyone trying to grasp the creative implications of the new tools.Full of excellent case studies in product development, architectural design and structural engineering that show behind-the-scenes photos and sequential diagrams. In addition to the cutting-edge technologies, this book surveys the more tried and true manufacturing processes too. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not very helpful.
This was sadly disappointing and did not really talk about how to do anything but rather how CAD for design was being used all over the industry. I would think that a book titled CAD for Fashion Design would actually show you how to do CAD for fashion design.

2-0 out of 5 stars this book is not very helpful - and it was written in 97
Especially with that title, you would expect alot of info on CAD for fashion right? Maybe see things like; how you would create patterns, even 3-D representations, or create prints and colors for fabrics, where I might look for resources on manufacturers and software providers, etc. Well, there are countless mentions in the book of people who use CAD for tons of various things, but almost no mention of HOW any of those people go about it. In some instances the writer is like: yeah, this internet thing is great for selling clothing, web sellers can actually superimpose different colors onto the same garments! yipee. You get the picture, OLD, and not really hands-on at all, more like an informationless overview.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fashion Designers must have this book...
Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) is used in every field of Fashion. Fashion Designers who work with different types of Design programmes, must read this book in the beginning. This book is so easy to read and understand for beginners. It also has a 3.5'' floppy disk containing of apparel images. It's worth to buy...

5-0 out of 5 stars Triumph d'VLSI
Fantastic text using insight, background material, and overall knowledge from premier user in EDA design tools.Erik does a tremendous job of explaining things and providing step by step detail in using complex VLSI design tools for creating design flows.I have known Erik for several years and he amazes me in his level of compassion, knowledge, and gift of teaching in a very complex area. This book is excellent for users both in the academic and commercial world who are looking for a guide that will help users learn the material well and provides a great reference for those that already have backgrounds in this area. This is a book that belongs on everyone's bookshelf not to mention having it very close by for reference while doing anything of importance in VLSI.More importantly, Erik provides the files for users, so that they can follow along and create their own libraries.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for starter
It is an ideal book for starter to learn the design flow of digital implementation using Cadence and Synopsys platform. The usages of the tools are described (much better than reading the long manuals). However, I think the starters usually cannot do the steps as smoothly as described in the book, since the users usually will encounter some error messages. The book seldom mention the method to solve the error messages displayed by the tools.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for learning Cadence design tools
This book addresses a very hard problem - teaching the essentials of designing VLSI digital circuits using the industrial-strength Cadence environment. As a longtime user of Cadence IC tools in the analog/RF design area, I am finding it to be very educational as I work to bring up the digital flow to support our increasingly complex mixed-signal designs.

The book addresses exactly what I needed - navigating through the maze of software tools offered by Cadence. It does not cover IC process technology, nor the Verilog language - making the correct point that these are covered more than adaquately elsewhere. What it does do is address the software tools, and it does so with well written text supported by many figures. This is exactly what I needed.

I have no illusions everything will work exactly as described.Having struggled through learning Cadence tools on my own for years, I understand the task the author has taken on is enormous.I am therefore willing to accept more struggles, but these will be much reduced thanks to the guidance I am finding in this book.Even if the NCSU toolkit or the UoU standard cells don't work for me, I don't care.I can learn from the book and use it guide me in the use of standard-cell based design in my favorite foundaries.I read 5 chapters on a recent airline trip, and was impressed enough with the knowledge gained that I bought 4 more copies to share with my graduate students. At the price offered by Amazon, I think this is a real bargain and will save my team hundreds if not thousands of dollars in personnel time!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but not without flaws
This book provides a good introduction to synopsys and cadence software, however it is not without many flaws.

First of all, throughout the book the author reference the University of Utah libraries which are supposed to be available online, but were nowhere to be found. This made it very difficult for me to follow along, since I was using the NCSU libraries which are claimed to be supported by this book, but are not fully. This book seems like it was written for a specific purpose (to teach U of U students how to use VLSI design software the way it is set up on their campus). That's great, but it doesn't belong in published book format.

Also, when the author finally discusses synthesis using design compiler / vision, he does a terrible job explaining how libraries work and where to find them.Once again, it assumes you are using the set-up at U of Utah and its all there for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Treasure trove of expert knowledge
Bringing up a industrial-strength CAD flow for VLSI requires a wealth of knowledge that has never been documented in a single place. This book breaks new ground by showing how to set up a design flow using the Cadence and Synopsys tools mixing custom and synthesized blocks. It is ideal for universities fabricating class projects in the MOSIS 0.6 um process. If you are setting up such a flow at your university, this book will save months of effort. The book also includes well-illustrated tutorials on using such a flow once it is set up. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Inspirational Regency...definitely worth reading
The Lady and the Cad is a compelling story wonderfully reflected in its title. If there was ever a true mismatch, the Earl of Sutton and Eunice were it. The author does a masterful job at showing Eunice's innocence and her love for the Lord. That, combined with the Earl's lost state and desire for something better than what he'd always settled for, created a compelling story. This romance novel is truly inspirational and a real page turner. Better even than the regency novels written by Lori Wick (of which I've read all,) I highly recommend this Heartsong title. The author truly has a voice suited to the Regency period and I haven't read a more intriguing tale written by a Christian author reflecting that stuffy era. :) ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Too simple
The book is well illustrated but very simpistic and covers too much of old drafting methods rather than "Sketch-Up". The Sketch-Up instructions included in the software cover all that is presented in the book. I would suggest that the potential book buyer first see if the included methods and instructions in the Sketch-Up tutorials might cover thier needs better and less expensively.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great start ....
I own most, if not all, of Bob Lang's books - so I am a fan. This book was very useful for me; over 50, a degreed engineer but no drafting skills, able to do emails, spreadsheets (even simple vlook-ups) and not afraid of computers but nothing like my kids can do. All my woodworking sketches at best use a ruler and graph paper to get anything close to a straight line and rough dimensions. Always wanted to learn Sketch-up this past year but the on-line tutorial was not getting the job done. Bought Bob's book - Reviewed the basic drafting background was pretty straightforward but the section on Sketch-up had me creating a table that looked 10 times better than my previous 5 or 6 attempts. I recommend it highly. Only thought is that I could have used more info on Sketch-up to take me further along.

5-0 out of 5 stars Structural, Civil & Pipe Drafting for CAD techs
Excellent condition, highly recommend this seller, timely delivery

2-0 out of 5 stars Many mistakes in book - Editor needed right away!
A few changes recommended before (ever) reprinting this book.

-Hiring an Editor who reads drawings is imperative!

-The illustrations for exercises are difficult to read in many cases due to the stylized lettering & smallness of type. Details are difficult to see without a magnifying glass for some people. A suggestion - include an electronic copy of the illustrations on the included cd for easy review. Since most drawings are done on CAD now, get rid of the hand lettering or please make it all caps instead of lowercase.

-Before putting in a hand drawn drawing for an exercise, draw it in CAD first. There were many math errors in dimnesions & missing dimensions. One drawing even had some dimensions that evidently "moved" to where it was referencing nothing. Several drawings that were supposed to work together had discrepancies between them.

-The Appendix is missing the Angle Channel references page stated in the Appendix Contents.

-The chapter on Pre-Engineered Metal Bldgs should be thrown out. It was very frustrating to try and gather enough information from the book to do anything but guess - that is not where you want a student or teacher to be. Get rid of all the pictures of the outside of the buildings - we've all seen them before - and include pictures of the inside & detailed pictures of how they are put together. That is where we really need to see the details. This chapter had the feel that the author thought it should be included but didn't really wanted to spend the time or effort to write it well.

-I'm sorry to say that I don't trust what information is in this book because of all the errors I found. I am not the teacher -I AM A STUDENT. I have been drafting for many years but am new to the Civil & Structural field. Most of the errors were basic drafting & omitted or conflicting information. Unfortunately my teacher doesn't trust the book now either. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED WITH CAREFUL EDITING & MAKING SURE ALL INFO NEEDED WAS INCLUDED IN THE TEXT & EASILY READ.

I am disappointed that textbooks are now soft cover, can contain many errors, and yet still have a list price that boggles the mind. ... Read more

Product Description
Engineering Drawing is a common subject offered to all branches of engineering in all the universities in India and abroad because it is the language of engineers. It helps one to convert his ideas into reality through drawing. This subject also helps one to develop imagination. This book helps both faculty and students to understand the concepts on their own. The book presents step by step approach with important notes to remember. Worked examples and different problems in the exercise are presented under various categories.

The present edition includes Scales also and some typical worked examples havebeen added in all the chapters. The chapter on Computer aided drawing is newin this edition. In the exercises also questions from different university examinationpapers are included under various categories which give an idea of differenttopics important for examinations point of view also. There are nearly 150 workedexamples, 250 problems in the exercises and 200 problems of the university examinations. There are 350 figures altogether.

The first highlight of this book is that one can understand the projectionsof straight lines and the second one is to choose the right method for the givenproblem wherever there are more than one method. Especially in the Intersectionsof surfaces of solids and Perspective projections are given. Just knowing themethods is not enough but one should know which method has to be applied isall the more important.

Product Description
Since their introduction in 1984, Field-Programmable GateArrays (FPGAs) have become one of the most popular implementationmedia for digital circuits and have grown into a $2 billion per yearindustry. As process geometries have shrunk into the deep-submicronregion, the logic capacity of FPGAs has greatly increased, makingFPGAs a viable implementation alternative for larger and largerdesigns. To make the best use of these new deep-submicron processes, one must re-design one's FPGAs and Computer- Aided Design (CAD) tools.Architecture and CAD for Deep-Submicron FPGAs addresses severalkey issues in the design of high-performance FPGA architectures andCAD tools, with particular emphasis on issues that are important forFPGAs implemented in deep-submicron processes. Three factors combine to determine the performance of an FPGA: thequality of the CAD tools used to map circuits into the FPGA, thequality of the FPGA architecture, and the electrical (i.e.transistor-level) design of the FPGA. Architecture and CAD forDeep-Submicron FPGAs examines all three of these issues inconcert. In order to investigate the quality of different FPGA architectures, one needs CAD tools capable of automatically implementing circuits ineach FPGA architecture of interest. Once a circuit has beenimplemented in an FPGA architecture, one next needs accurate area anddelay models to evaluate the quality (speed achieved, area required)of the circuit implementation in the FPGA architecture under test. This book therefore has three major foci: the development of ahigh-quality and highly flexible CAD infrastructure, thecreation of accurate area and delay models for FPGAs, and the study ofseveral important FPGA architectural issues. Architecture and CAD for Deep-Submicron FPGAs is an essentialreference for researchers, professionals and students interested inFPGAs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Start here for today's place-and-route
This book derives from Vaughn Betz's doctoral dissertation. Despite that, it provides a clear and readable introduction for researchers in at least two areas of FPGA tools and implementation: tools and fabric.

This work is best known for the tools that Betz developed, including the Versatile (or was it Vaughn's?) Place and Route - VPR. Nearly a decade old now, VPR has achieved such iconic status that it appears twice in the SPEC 2000 benchmarks. VPR also seems to be the de facto starting point for nearly all current academic research in P&R. Chapters 3-4 of this book, following some introductory material, present the essence of Betz's research. When I say that it all unfolds in a logical, even obvious way, I don't mean to denigrate this work. Quite the opposite. Only a very fine mind and writer can make the subtle appear obvious, and even that statement disregards the huge amount of experimentation and CPU-months that went into proving that it is obvious.

The second half of the book's thesis lies outside of my central interests. Given groundbreaking tools for exploiting an FPGA's structure, a new question arises. Within the range of possible structures, which can most readily be exploited? At this writing, 3.5 Moore generations after this book was published, the answers are very different. The questions remain valid, however, as do Betz's means of answering them. Parameterized tools explore the space of parameterized structures.

Perhaps the sticker shock on this title will put some readers off - it certainly lead me to some fancy talking in convincing my department to get a copy. Compare the price to tuition you'd pay (if you could find a course) to acquire the same knowledge. Despite its age, this book's content underlies today's commercial P&R tools. If you're starting in the field, you must start here.

4-0 out of 5 stars Feature Based Modelling Explained
This is a beautifully organised book, taking you through CAD/CAM methodology.Importance of features in modelling practice has come out very well.

However, the concepts of parametric, variational and hibridmodeling techniques could be made more elaborate and lucid.Themathematics dealt in this book also could be retouched.

All theselimitations aside, this is a class book.Ideal for university students andthe guys getting into CAD/CAM development.
