Disappointingly light on real content
I've been doing engineering design for a long time, mostly electrical, but some mechanical stuff here and there. I've done plenty of 2D mechanical drawings. What I was looking for was a book that explained the core differences between AutoCAD-like 2D drafting and the new wave of 3D parametric modeling tools. I wanted an overview of when to use 3D, and when 2D would be quicker. I was hoping for some guidance as to how to approach the modeling of a large assembly in 3D. Some tips for real-world designs, like the thought process to be used when modeling sheet metal assemblies. Do you leave every screw, nut and bolt used to cut holes in the drawing for use on the BOM, or leave them out because they clutter 2D views? Stuff like that. Instead, what this book delivers is breathless prose extolling the superiority of 3D CAD over 2D CAD over and over again. To be fair, the first 5 chapters do a decent job of covering some of the advantages of 3D CAD and the associated workflow, using the usual cylinders and rectangular solids. However, the text is constantly proclaiming"See how easy this is compared to 2D CAD?" Well, no, not really. How do I add 2 degrees of mold relief on that cylinder parametrically? And this leads into what I really hate about this book: the author's answer to that question is: "take college courses, get workplace training, etc. etc" and he spends the last 80 pages explaining the advantages of doing that. Well, sir, I was hoping this BOOK I purchased might contain a little more depth. No such luck.

If you're an IT person or management type who wants to know why your engineers are requesting or need a 3D CAD system, this book is great for bringing a non-technical type up to speed. If you're an engineer trying to figure out how to be productive on a 3D CAD system, well, I guess you'd better take one of the author's college courses, or wait until someone publishes a truly useful book. ... Good computer graphics text
This text has a novel approach to entry level computer graphics using homogeneous coordinates entirely.I struggled a bit with the use of these representations in perspective transformations.However once I got it I found the derivations and formulas to be easy to get and easy to use. The book has an extensive set of exercises with complete answers.I deducted one star because the theoretical aspects of homogeneous transformations could use expansion and simplification. ... Amazing Book
The book is written for all kind of reader. A undergraduate, graduate and research scholar like me can follow the book without any difficulty. Feature Based Modelling Explained
This is a beautifully organised book, taking you through CAD/CAM methodology.Importance of features in modelling practice has come out very well.

However, the concepts of parametric, variational and hibridmodeling techniques could be made more elaborate and lucid.Themathematics dealt in this book also could be retouched.

All theselimitations aside, this is a class book.Ideal for university students andthe guys getting into CAD/CAM development.

A page-turner
Benita Hume was a charming correspondent.Her letters bring her 2nd husband George Sanders to life in a way that a more objective observer probably never could.Who else would tell you that Sanders could play the guitar behind his back, or that he was an amateur electrician who routinely rewired his friends' houses?He had so many gifts, it's endlessly fascinating to me that he ended his life because he was bored.

This may not be a typical biography, but it's one of the best that I've read.

Not enough about George Sanders just letters from BenitaHume
I am glad I picked this one up first. I did not see this as a real bio on George Sanders. It had pages on Brian Aherne's life. I found this to be not needed. The majority of the book is letters from Benita Hume(George Sanders wife) to Brian Aherne. I wanted a meat and potatoes bio on George. I suggest not wasting your money. You will only get bits and pieces of George. I am sure Brian meant well ,but it just did not turn out well. I am now reading George Sanders autobiography. I will let you know how that goes.

Loved It
I read this book in 1979, saving what I assumed was the least interesting of my biography purchases for last.You guessed it - I couldn't put the book down and I was upset when it ended, so I promptly re-read it again.I loved the original correspondence that Mr. Aherne included in the book.Later when I read '54 Charing Cross Road', I was again reminded of 'A Dreadful Man' and became even more determined to find more books like these.Mr. Aherne quotes in this book the biography that George Sanders wrote in the 60's, which launched a personal 17 year search.I searched out of state and out of country.At Powell's Books in Oregon they said it was very hard to find.In England (1995) I spent an entire day in the Charing Cross District seaching the used book stores. They all knew of the book, but said they couldn't keep a copy on the shelves long.During that time I kept re-reading 'A Dreadful Man' every couple of years, and hoping for the best. Then several months ago I FOUND IT on the AMAZON list, listed as out-of-print, but available.Lucky me - I ordered and received my own copy.I have not been disappointed.It was even better than I had hoped for.I am sad to see for the rest of you, that AMAZON no longer has it listed under George Sanders as being available.THANK YOU AMAZON for having it this summer!"A Dreadful Man" is one book that I won't loan out to my friends.Biography and letter writing fans will enjoy it. ... Skip it
Cad is the equivalent of a nightmare first date. Sure, you think, he's not cute or particularly intelligent, but maybe he'll be fun and, let's be honest, any date is better than staying at home watching reruns of Sex and the City.

Unfortunately, it turns out he's even uglier than you remembered and not funny at all. On the contrary: he's crude, boring, goes on and on about himself, and it's obvious he considers himself the catch of the century, which leads you to conclude he needs a shrink--and a new pair of glasses.

Most of us have had at least one of those dates, the kind that make us cringe and wish we were home doing laundry, or at the dentist having a root canal--anywhere but here, listening to this horrible guy. Well, Rick Marin is that man and Cad is that date. Run.

He says, she says
The book says: "He's the funny, sweet guy with the great eyes who asks you a million questions and seems mesmerized by every reply. He takes you on the greatest, longest date of your life."

I say: "He's the ugly, judgmental loser with the dorky glasses and the gigantic nose, who needs to use his failed marriage to inspire pity in order to get women into bed. He writes a book that is whiny, boring, and never seems to end."

Guilty Pleasure

It's all true. Every "NOooo...really??" fear women have harbored about their man's internal dialog and his lizard-brained motivators is, in fact, well-founded.
Mr. Marin's book is funny, well written, and flourescently honest (I give him points for not trying to defend his pathetic behavior).

Overall, a blast to read.

Green-card fraud
After marrying a girl he hardly knows to get a green card, Marin is shocked when this "marriage" doesn't work out. Like one of those pathetic fifty-somethings who are still blaming their parents for their relationship problems, he blames all his dating misadventures on his ex wife, and his "traumatic" starter marriage. I can't decide whether he's a hypocrite or just plain stupid. What I do know is this book is a dud.

One Question...

What a Poisionality!
"All About Eve", "The Ghost & Mrs. Muir", "The Black Swan", "The Portrait of Dorian Gray", "Rebecca" ... every time I saw these movies I would revel in George Sanders' performances. I had a hunch that there was much more to the man than met the eye. The introduction and filmography tells you everything you need to know about this talented, tortured man. The priceless segment was his autobiography; hearing his intelligent, sarcastic voice once again making hilarious observations about the world around him. However, one note about the dust cover art: with all the respect given him in the book I thought decorating the book with a martini glass and strewn pills in bad taste.

Entertaining, witty, biography fans will LOVE it!
In 1979 I read 'A Dreadful Man' by Brian Aherne, and fell in love with that book. If your a begginer this books is for you
This is a great starter book which has step by step instructions. Also this book came witha CD to show how to do the different excercises if you cannot figure from the book.

Great book for all new SolidWorks users
I passed my CSWA Certification process partly due to the Planchards.I had a SolidWorks issue a few weeks ago, I contacted David Planchard, and he helped me out to resolve the problem, and it turned out that it was a design issue, not even a SolidWorks issue.

The Planchards have been writing great SolidWorks books for over 10 years.The books are targeted for the beginner to intermediate user using a large bold command structure format and a simple but effect step-by-step procedure.

I hired three new designers in the past two weeks.They are relatively new to SolidWorks.I purchase this book and arranged SolidWorks VAR classes to bring them up to speed quickly.

The book provides an excellent foundation of the user interface, menus, toolbars and Feature and Sketch tools.The Multi-media CD does a great job in providing a visual presentation of the first five chapters.The step-by-step procedure moves at a good pace, while each new section reflex's on the previous section.There are great design tips and notes thought-out the book.

One reviewer wrote that the book from Scott Hanson is a better book for the beginner. Scott does not write a book for 2007!You can not believe all reviews...

Solidworks 2007 Review
I bought this book based on the prior reviews and was so frustrated with it, I almost gave it up. I found that the Planchard's wrote their text with a lot of detail information and if you have experience with Solidworks, it would be a useful manual to have, however if you are new to Solidworks, this is the type of manual that is best bought AFTER using another manual first and gaining confidence.I made an adjustment manual wise and found my enthusiam for this software returned almost instanteously.Learn the basics from someone such as Scott Hansen's book then graduate to this text and beware of the reviewers.One reviewer made the statement that he did not know how somebody could write a bad review about a well written book.For a beginner, the Planchard book gets into too much orgin of the commands.Keep it simple.The two stars are for the reviewers moreso than the authors. That's my view.

Great Classroom book
I've been using the Engineering Design with SolidWorks book by Planchard and Planchard in my classroom for the past three years. In my opinion, this is the finest SolidWorks book on the market today for students that are new to the software and would like to better understand and apply proper design techniques.

I can't comprehend why some people are compelled to write an unconstructive review about a skillfully written book. This book is the only book on SolidWorks that covers in a project base format; Fundamentals of part modeling, Fundamentals of assembly modeling, Fundamentals of drawing, and the fundamentals of top-down assembly modeling along with numerous key features from the features toolbar: Extruded Boss/Base, Extruded Cut, Sweep, loft, Revolve Boss/Base, and more.

To the best of my knowledge, this is the only book that also briefly covers the sheet metal toolbar and its features. It provides a great exposure to creating simple sheet metal models without purchasing a separate sheet metal book.

A past reviewer stated that, the book omitted important imbedded information to set up the title block in a drawing. He may want to read Chapter 3, page 13: Sheet Format and Title block under the custom properties section.

Engineering Design with SolidWorks 2007 is by far the most comprehensive SolidWorks book for beginners on the market today. This book makes my life a lot easier in the classroom. My students enjoy the layout, illustrations, step by step procedures and the enclosed multimedia CD.

Not what I need to do my job
I have been disappointed from the start with this book. We are changing over from AutoCad to Solidworks. The first thing I was trying to do is set up the Title Block. In the instructions of the book an important step is omitted, the link to imbedded information. I had to go to the Solidworks help to find this information. This book is just a collection of tutorials that lightly cover the topics in the book. There is nothing about weldments or "Smart Fasteners". Plus the sheet metal section is lame. Not very helpful.
This was sadly disappointing and did not really talk about how to do anything but rather how CAD for design was being used all over the industry. I would think that a book titled CAD for Fashion Design would actually show you how to do CAD for fashion design.

this book is not very helpful - and it was written in 97
Especially with that title, you would expect alot of info on CAD for fashion right? Maybe see things like; how you would create patterns, even 3-D representations, or create prints and colors for fabrics, where I might look for resources on manufacturers and software providers, etc. Well, there are countless mentions in the book of people who use CAD for tons of various things, but almost no mention of HOW any of those people go about it. In some instances the writer is like: yeah, this internet thing is great for selling clothing, web sellers can actually superimpose different colors onto the same garments! yipee. You get the picture, OLD, and not really hands-on at all, more like an informationless overview.

Fashion Designers must have this book...
