5-0 out of 5 stars A Note From The Author.
Most people are surpised to find that this book is still in print after 34 years, however it is now in it's 5th Printing by the Tennessee Division of Geology.

"Descriptions of Tennessee Caves" describes 316 different caves in Tennessee and has a special section on saltpeter mining during both the War of 1812 and the Civil War.This book was written as a supplement to "Caves of Tennessee", which was published in 1961 and described 700 different Tennessee Caves.Together, these two books describe over 1,000 Tennessee caves.

This book has numerous maps and black and white photographs. Both books are considered "must haves" by Tennessee cave explorers.

The original First Edition of this book was hardbound and is considered quite a collector's item in good condition. All subsequent printings have been softbound.

Excerpt: Karst topography is a landscape shaped by the dissolution of a layer or layers of soluble bedrock, usually carbonate rock such as limestone or dolomite. Due to subterranean drainage, there may be very limited surface water, even to the absence of all rivers and lakes. Many karst regions display distinctive surface features, with sinkholes or dolines being the most common. However, distinctive karst surface features may be completely absent where the soluble rock is mantled, such as by glacial debris, or confined by a superimposed non-soluble rock strata. Some karst regions include thousands of caves, even though evidence of caves that are big enough for human exploration is not a required characteristic of karst. Various karst landforms have been found on all continents except Antarctica (see below: Notable karst areas). Karst topography is characterized by subterranean limestone caverns, carved by groundwater. The geographer Jovan Cviji (18651927) was born in western Serbia and studied widely in the Dinaric Kras region. His publication of Das Karstphänomen (1893) established that rock dissolution was the key process and that it created most types of dolines, "the diagnostic karst landforms". The Dinaric Kras thus became the type area for dissolutional landforms and aquifers; the regional name kras, Germanicised as "karst", is now applied to modern and paleo-dissolutional...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=17022 ... 5-0 out of 5 stars For the Basic Geology of Mammoth Cave, Look No Further!
Art Palmer has been caving in the area seemingly forever, and the book shows it. Written for the non-geologist yet with plenty of details (& black-and-white pictures), it gives you the tools to understand the cave& it's setting. By using examples from the cave, as well as maps &simple diagrams, the complex nature of cavern formation in this area isexplained. The ways that the geology influence the layout of the passagesis particularly informative, and the detailed step-by-step evolution of thevarious levels & passages is covered in detail. Finally, the chapter onthe geology of the various tour routes changes the tours from interestingwalking trips to a virtual feast, with well-written descriptions anddetailed maps. If you like caves like Mammoth and want to learn more aboutthe geology of the longest cave in the world, turn to this book. ... Read more

Product Description
This book summarizes our knowledge of the caves and cave research in Bulgaria. The first Bulgarian caving society was founded as early as 1929, but the first cave animals, fossils and archaeological artefacts in Bulgarian caves had been found and published even earlier, at the end of the 19th century. However, sporting speleology was established much later, since the restoration of organized caving in 1958. By that time, only some 200 caves had been known in Bulgaria, largely highly superficially. At present they outnumber 5,100, most of them being well-documented. Cave animals have been recorded from more than 700 Bulgarian caves. Bulgarian cavers have discovered and surveyed 62 caves longer than 1,000 m, as well as 52 potholes deeper than 100 m. Bulgarian caving is currently well-organized network of caving clubs, including more than 800 members. Over the past 40 years, Bulgarian cavers have organized the exploration of hundreds of caves in more than 45 countries, including independent missions to Austria, France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Cuba, China, Vietnam, Indonesia etc. Some of them also participated in such complex international expeditions as the British Speleological Expedition to Papua New Guinea in 1975. Numerous new animal species have been described by Bulgarian specialists from caves in different parts of the world. The Bulgarian Federation of Speleology has initiated the creation of a Balkan speleological union. One of the major achievements of Bulgarian speleology has become the compilation of the Main Card Index of Bulgarian caves. Keeping in mind all these achievements, time has come to publish both in Bulgarian and English a compendium containing, besides other things, concise descriptions of 260 of he most important and spectacular caves and potholes of Bulgaria. An outline is also given of some general subjects like Biospeleology, Speleopalaeontology, Speleoarcheology, Speleomineralogy, Geomorphology and Hydrogeology of Karst, Cave diving, Cave rescue and others. The book contains data on various aspects of research carried out by Bulgarian cavers all over the world, as well as biographical information about many Bulgarian cavers and cave scientists. The publication is richly illustrated by numerous colour pictures, graphs and maps. ... Read more

Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Algar do Carvão is an ancient lava tube or volcanic vent located in the center of the island of Terceira in the Azores. It lies within the municipality of Angra do Heroísmo in the parish of Porto Judeu. The word, algar, is a Portuguese word that denotes a natural cavity in the earth that, unlike most caves or caverns, is vertical in its orientation, like a well. The Portuguese word derives from the Arabic word, al-Gar, which means "the crease". Carvão means "coal" in Portuguese, but the Algar do Carvão is not a source of coal; so, to call this geological feature "coal cavern" is more an acknowledgment of its darkness than the composition of the rock in which it was formed. Terceira is the site of four large volcanoes (Pico Alto, Santa Barbara, Guilherme Moniz, and Cinco Picos) grouped along a basaltic fissure zone that transects the island from northwest to southeast. The Algar do Carvão is directly associated with the caldera of the Guilherme Moniz volcano, but it is part of the same complex as Santa Barbara to the west, Pico Alto to the north, and Guilherme Moniz, which is a short distance to the south of the Algar do Carvão site. At Algar do Carvão, which is at an altitude of about 550 meters above sea level, it is possible to descend about one hundred metres into the earth where there is a pool of crystal-clear water. The cave itself is remarkable for the unique mineralogical characteristics of its silicate stalactites. The site, 40.5 hectares in extent, has been designated a regional natural monument. The existence of the cavern was known for a long time, but the lack of light inside it, and the obvious dan...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=16897800 ... Read more
