Excerpt: Zedekiah's Cave also known as Solomon's Quarries is a 5-acre (20,000 m) underground meleke limestone quarry that runs the length of five city blocks under the Muslim Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem. It was carved over a period of several thousand years and is a remnant of the biggest quarry in Jerusalem, having once stretched all the way from Jeremiah's Grotto and the Garden Tomb a traditional Protestant site of Jesus's burial to the walls of the Old City. In addition to Zedekiah's Cave and Solomon's Quarries, this site has been called Zedekiah's Grotto, Suleiman's Cave, the Royal Caverns (or Royal Caves or Royal Quarries), and Korah's Cave. The Arabic name Migharat al-Kitan, or "Cotton Cave", has also been used; the cavern is thought to have been once used as a storage place for cotton. The entrance to Zedekiah's Cave is just beneath the Old City wall, between the Damascus and Herod Gates, about 500 feet (150 m) east of the former. Beyond the narrow entrance, the cave slopes down into a vast 300-foot-long auditorium-like chamber. Drops of water, known as Zedekiah's tears, trickle through the ceiling (See below for the legend associating the cave with King Zedekiah.) Beyond the auditorium, are a series of artificial galleries hewn by ancient stonecutters into chaotic, sometimes bizarre, patterns and formations. Best book on caving in Jamaica you'll ever find
A monument! For every caver just dreaming to go caving to Ja this is a must have. Tons and tons of information. Excellent work from Mr Fincham. This is a lives work. Only minor flaw: the many cavemaps have been redrawn to have a uniform style throughout the book resulting in a reduction of detail compared to the original map. But who cares ;) ... Read more

Want to know more about the globe's caves and karst regions?

As an armchair explorer/enthusiast, finding this book at the local used bookstore was like stumbling upon a goldmine!

Background info first:

The book's full title is "The Underground Atlas:A Gazetteer of the Worlds Cave Regions", by John Middleton & Tony Waltham.It's 239 pages long, including glossary, and has 24 pages of B&W photos.The book hasnumerous (approximately 104) maps of global, regional, national and local caves & karst regions, as well as detailed info and history on important caves and expeditions' maps of their explorations.


Review:

The only down side to this book is its age - it was published in 1986 and again in 1992, so there's a lot of new information that's not included in this book, specifically Mexico's fascinating 'Cueva de Villa Luz', translated to be: "Cave of the Lighted House." With that in mind, it's still a VERY good book, particularly if you're planning a caving/archaeological or anthropologicalexpedition and think you'll be needing info on the caves in the area.

If you "just" an 'armchair explorer', like me, it's still a wonderful buy and will help fill in any blank areas left on your exploration map.
