Product Description
The previous edition of this book marked the shift in technology from video to digital camera use with microscope use in biological science. This new edition presents some of the optical fundamentals needed to provide a quality image to the digital camera. Specifically, it covers the fundamental geometric optics of finite- and infinity-corrected microscopes, develops the concepts of physical optics and Abbe's theory of image formation, presents the principles of Kohler illumination, and finally reviews the fundamentals of fluorescence and fluorescence microscopy. The second group of chapters deals with digital and video fundamentals: how digital and video cameras work, how to coordinate cameras with microscopes, how to deal with digital data, the fundamentals of image processing, and low light level cameras. The third group of chapters address some specialized areas of microscopy that allow sophisticated measurements of events in living cells that are below the optical limits of resolution.

* Expands coverage to include discussion of confocal microscopy not found in the previous edition
* Includes "traps and pitfalls" as well as laboratory exercises to help illustrate methods ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars textbooks
Really happy with fast delivey and soooooooo glad I didn't have to pay bookstore price.

3-0 out of 5 stars A little hard to read
I have a hard time reading this book. I even prefer to just read my instructor's power point. I don't know if the course is just too deep or the content of the book isn't explained the way that is more readable and fun, but I never had any problems with my general bio classes. I got A's in all of my bio classes. I don't know how will it work out this time. I'm taking molecular bio and genetics.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book On Molecular And Cell Biology

4-0 out of 5 stars Dense, but Decent
I like histology, but this text just didn't match my learning style.

Pros:
1. The cd was a little useful, but don't get your hopes up. It's the same "plate" images provided in the text with an ability to enlarge them.
2. Organized fairly well.
3. I haven't found many errors

Cons:
1. Too dense. Honestly there is considerably more information provided in this text than what's needed in medical school.
2. The text also lacks any type of end of chapter summary/review or quiz questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars med school histo
Great book for my purposes, lots of images, details where they are needed and broad range of info.

1-0 out of 5 stars Long Chapters With Not Much Substance
This book is our textbook at the med school. It does not really cover the material that we need to know, while there are a lot of other things there that we don't need to study for our class. It is also not a well-written text that you can read fast and at the same time make connections between the materials that you read. I use Basic Histology by Junqueira, which is more compact in size and delivers more useful info for medical histology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Text
Understanding histology, especially histology of diseases, is essential for success in medical school. I found the chapters on the immune system organs to be most helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars At Last
I am so thrilled that at last there is a book such as this explaining how we as humans are what we are. That it is not our genetics that determine who we are but our environment even from our time in the womb. As a practitioner who practises NET NeurEmotional Technique it is so good to see it explained in a scientific way that the public can now read about. Epigenetics is truly the path to healing of the future.
Dr Gunta Krumins-Caldwell author of On Silver Wings

3-0 out of 5 stars The Control Mechanism is What?
Lipton's initial presentation of a string of fun discoveries from the history of science is suddenly interrupted by a clunker of a punch line.

Lipton lost me when he stated on disc #2 that the control mechanism for cellular membranes is obviously field broadcasts from the eternal beings of the spirit world.

I know he is mistaken here because the results of my own laboratory experiments clearly show that the control mechanism for cellular membranes is either 1) God, 2) The Flying Spaghetti Monster, 3) Aliens or 4) Pokemon.

I will read more of Lipton's work when he finds a way to scientifically test his hypothesis.Perhaps then he can disprove mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Material
This is a wonderful, clear explanation of important biological functions that are on the cutting edge of biology. Due to the new (and not mainstream) nature of the material it is fascinating even for someone with extensive knowledge of the field. Due to the simple and clear delivery it is fascinating for my 10 year old son as well. I have been listening to it in the car and he loves it! He now knows and brings information to his science teacher. The message is enlightening and empowering and I highly recommend this to anyone with any interest in science or the power of positive thinking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cell Intelligence
Bruce Lipton is a brilliant scientist who has explained in an easily understood way the relationship between our brains and the intelligence that permeates every cell in our bodies and shows us that our beliefs are a very powerful part of who we are and we have an inherent intelligence that is part of us and we do have control of our own general health. Dr Lipton also gives clients the knowledge that we are more than we think we are.
The Wisdom of Your Cells: How Your Beliefs Control Your Biology

4-0 out of 5 stars Positive Thinking Can Be a Matter of Life or Death, cellularly speaking
Dr.Bruce Lipton pulls back the curtain of our physical being and provides profound insights into the connection that many people have spoken to over time: "Whether you think you can or you can't, you are right." Henry Ford. Be very careful what thoughts you entertain because your body has the ability to listen VERY closely and respond according to your beliefs. The meaning I attach to any situation makes ALL the difference in terms of the outcome. Dr. Lipton's ability to make the profound simple is unmatched, he is a teacher who has the GIFT and ABILITY to make complex information very simply and easy to understand and apply immediately in life.

4-0 out of 5 stars good
the book itself is good, but the content of the book is not so good.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent, but harder than the real thing
I used this as a review guide for the Biochem GRE.I'd only taken a one-summer biochem class, so I was feeling weak in that area, although confident about the rest. The book has good organization, and doesn't go too in-depth into one topic at the expense of others.

The biggest problem I had with it was that it was much harder than the real test!I was very worried that I was going to do terribly, and this made me more anxious than I should have been.In the last few days before I took the one real exam that I had, and it was much easier than the book's questions. There were much more biochem pathway trivia in the book than on the real exam.

There are some factual errors in this book, and hopefully future editions will get a little more proofreading.

4-0 out of 5 stars good
I received the product very quickly. It was tough to find a GRE book for the biochemistry subject test because there are few out there. Since there are no biochem test prep books to compare this to, I'd have to give this one a thumbs up for its straight to the point style.

2-0 out of 5 stars NOT very professional
I found many typos in this book - the carbon atom has 5 covalent bonds sticking out in the diagram, the math derivation seems not coherent, etc.

I am a little disappointed since the book was written by two PhDs.

1-0 out of 5 stars Will waste your time
I have only read the first five pages and it has obvious critical errors.I will have to abandon it for fear of learning more mis-information.

This book has probably never been edited by a scientist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest value of this work is its comprehensiveness
Cell biology techniques have been continuously upgraded since the middle of this century, and future developments seem assured. In the 1990s, alone, new developments have led to improved separations capability, detection instrumentation, and new formulations of serum-free media. Any research institution with faculty and students engaged in cell biology will want to have the most current laboratory guidelines available, and this four-volume, peer-reviewed collection of protocols answers that need. The second edition has benefited from suggestions from practicing scientists, filling in gaps from the first edition.

Perhaps the greatest value of this work is its comprehensiveness. Laboratories and libraries can have detailed guidelines for cell culture, separation, staining, growth, apoptosis, preparation of component parts, assays, antibody production, genetic engineering, microscopy, electrophoresis, and more, all in one source. Need to know how to produce transgenic mice? It's here. How to grow viruses? Prepare nuclei? Stain mitochondria? Use fluorecence microscopy? All here.

Although there are 486 contributors to the 250 articles, uniform structure of articles builds continuity and thus ease of use. Most entries adhere to the five-part template (Introduction, Materials and Instrumentation, Procedures, Comments, and Pitfalls). This last section, "Pitfalls," seems especially valuable, as there is no substitute for experience. The main difference between articles tends to be the use of supportive graphs, photos, and tables, though in general (if such a diverse collection can be spoken of "in general") visuals are at a minimum. ... Product Description
This is the most complete resource on the techniques, equipment, principles, and practices of animal cell culture.

Since publication of the previous edition of this benchmark text, numerous types of equipment and materials have changed and new specialized techniques have been developed, particularly in the area of stem cell research and tissue engineering. These and other developments have been incorporated into this rigorously revised and expanded sixth edition of Culture of Animal Cells, the leading text in the basic methodology of cell culture.

This authoritative volume offers a complete background related to growth of animal cells in culture. It contains many specialized protocols and advice on how to apply some of the basic protocols to teaching cell culture. Beginning with laboratory design, safety, validation, and bioethics, then continuing with preparation of media, primary culture, and cell lines through to characterization and authentication, contamination, specialized techniques, and troubleshooting, the unparalleled coverage includes:

  • An all-new section addressing the additional caution required once a primary culture is converted to a cell line

  • Differentiation in stem cells and reprogramming of adult cells to form stem cells

  • A new section and protocol on cryopreservation by vitrification

  • Separate sections dealing with epithelial cells, mesenchymal cells, neurectodermal cells, and hematopoietic cells, a new chapter on germs cells/stemcells/amniocytes

  • A new section on organotypic culture

  • Increased emphasis on contamination and misidentification (including cross-contamination) with revised protocols for detection and elimination

  • A problem-solving chapter, glossary of terms, advice on sourcing materials, and list of suppliers

This landmark text presents the most accessible and comprehensive introduction available to the culture and experimental manipulation of animal cells and is indispensable for those in the field, including clinical and biopharmaceutical researchers and scientists, graduate students, laboratory managers in cell and molecular biology labs and genetics labs, trainees, and technicians. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars This is a Rip-Off Scam
I am a fourth year university student preparing to take the Biochem/Cell Bio GRE Subject Test.I ordered this book thinking that it was a work-book and stugy guide.I was under the impression that this volume would contain multiple sample tests along with study materials in the individual subject areas. At over $90, plus shipping, I was expecting a comprehensive review like the workbooks published by Barron's for the SAT.

To say I was disappointed when I recieved this book is a gross understatement. Its not even a book, it is a 60 PAGE BOOKLET.[...]This booklet contains just ONE full-size subject test, and not much more. The sample test occupies the bulk of the booklet, the remaining 16 pages offer no viable insight as to how you should study for this test, or any valuable tips to get you ahead. Examples of the "advice" contained in this useless booklet includes, "A general review of you undergrad cirriculum is the best preparation," Gee; thanks.

You can obtain a sample test for FREE when you register for your subject test.Do yourself a favor and save your 90 bucks, you can get everyting contained in this lousy booklet AT NO CHARGE.A no-name company called BookoRama in Pennsylvania billed my debit card for almost A HUNDRED DOLLARS.When the booklet arrived, it did not come with any kind of invoice or receipt, just a slip of paper that read "ALL SALES FINAL."It might as well have said "YOU GOT F*****"There is no hope for a refund. On top of it all, to add insult to injury, the list price on the back cover reads: $9.00 US!!!

I got screwed out of my hard earned cash for a worthless, nine dollar booklet.Take it from me; dont order this trash. The only way to study for this test is with your old Biochem, Cell and Genetics textbooks; NOT by dropping over 90 dollars for this SCAM.

5-0 out of 5 stars These test questions are not available elsewhere
The two most recent reviewers have suggested that this book is the same as the PDF file on ets.org. Although I'm sure they were trying to be helpful, that information is false.

The file you can download from ETS is an electronic copy of the same sample booklet that you get in the mail (for free) when you register for the exam.

The published book itself follows the same format (test info, outline of topics, sample test, scoring). However, it is a totally different set of test questions.

For example, page 1 of the test on the ETS website includes questions on: RNA molecules that exhibit catalytic activity; the conversion of pyruvate to oxylate; identifying a particular hormone given a description of its function; oxydative phosphorylation; a general question on enzyme catalyzation; and the turnover of molecular components through the plasma membrane.

Page 1 of the published test guide (the book for sale here) includes questions on: the importance of phospholipids as consituents of cell membranes; the stabilization of folded states of globular proteins; the ionic strength of .5 molar MgCl(2); the most efficient substrate of an enzyme; the terminal electron acceptor for noncyclic electron flow during the light reactions of photosynthesis; the most effective method for isolation of secretory vesicles from a cell lysate; the function of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum (of five listed functions, you have to pick the one that's incorrect); communication among the cisternae of the Golgi complex; and theoretical implications fo the resolving power of light microscopes.

As you can see, they are NOT the same exam.

Both the ets.org PDF file and the published book include 180 questions. Either of them should give you a good idea of how you would do on the real exam.

However, if you can get a hold of the published book (which ETS has stopped making), you have twice as many questions to study from. If you use the actual questions to look up topics, then the bigger pool of sample questions you have, the better. Some people aren't just satisfied with knowing they got a correct answer; they make sure they can identify all the terms and concepts in the *wrong* answers as well.

I think the printed study guide is useful. The two reviewers who say it's not useful haven't even looked at it; they just "heard" it was the same as the PDF file on the website.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
I bought this book thinking it was a review similar to those for the General GRE exam, I thought wrong. This book is a bound version of a sample test that you can download from the ETS website along with the "helpful" hints that the ETS provides.Don't bother wasting your time and money trying to get a copy of this book, you can download the whole thing as a PDF at the ETS website.

1-0 out of 5 stars $250!
Someone is trying to sell one of these books, used, for $250.

I downloaded a practice test online at gre.org

I hear that its the same information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for the GRE subject test
This is a wonderful resource for the biochemistry, Cell and Molecular biology subject test. The only other things you need to ace this subjecy test would be a good biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology and genetics texts and loads of time to study. I highly recommend this book for anybody hoping to get a good score in the GRE. ... Read more
