hmm....confused
I'm not a math whiz & to be able to build these houses. I said never mind & put the book down. There has to be something simpler.

Misleading cover photo
If you are interested in learning more about the beautiful structure pictured on the cover of this book, don't bother buying this book. The book provides no additional photos and only two pages of text that covers this structure at a high level - and no similar structures are covered either. Obviously these two pages were tacked on in one of the recent editions. I feel cheated.

Buy the much better "Earthbag Building: The Tools, Tricks and Techniques (Natural Building Series)" by Hunter and Kiffmeyer instead.

Pure Inspiration
It's important to understand that what is truly new and fresh can't be responsibly reduced to a cookbook.Building a house is a major undertaking, and different parts of the earth have different climates, different needs, and different earth underfoot to build from.

Khalili inspires his readers to think more openly, he urges experimentation while sharing what is known.His buildings are gorgeous, with an openness and simplicity that inspires us to question the standard boxes most of us live in.

Also inspirational is his obvious deep humanity; his love for both building AND people has enabled him to leave the usual paths and use the best qualities of the old, while infusing it with modern understanding to create wonderful new, achievable designs.I am awed.I've read this book twice, I'm building the models he recommends so I can more fully understand the structures of arch and domes, and hope to take his workshop next summer.

This is life affirming as well as life-changing.

Great book by a great architect
This is a great book. I haven't read it page for page yet, but in it goes with my favourites. It concentrates on Khalili's monolithic fired ceramic houses and has a lot of detail. It leaves no stones unturned if you want a building of this type.

Sadly, the book was published before Khalili invented Superadobe or Earth Bag building. For a good book on Earthbag, I recommend "Earthbag Building: The Tools, Tricks and Techniques"
by Kaki Hunter. Another book - which is more general is "Alternative Construction; Contemporary Natural Building Methods" by Lynne Elisabeth and Cassandra Adams.

Just checked this book at our local library and found it to be one of the best books I have read on ways to treat ceramic surfaces.The sections are short but very complete with excellent photos for examples.This book is inclusive and it is worth purchasing or checking out from your local library.

Most Comprehensive ceramics textbook
I took a ceramics class and found that the text we were using (fundamentals of ceramics, barrsoum) was missing a lot of processing and application info. This text covers every aspect of ceramic science and engineering you could think of and for the price its a must.
The only thing that through me off was the format it is written in, 2 columns per page with awkward boxes in the middle.

I recently had a conversation with a vetern professor of archaeology. He's a brilliant wealth of information, and he doesn't use the word "hip" too often. Very Accurate...
Well, for me, this book has shared a lot of useful information and tips on how to come up with ones own crystalline base glaze. Then, it explains how to achieve different crystal/background colors by experimenting with different oxides, along with nice, consistent firing schedules that I have tried and have gotten great results from. One must understand that a glaze recipe might be good in one area, but does not always work out in another area. So far, my results are pretty on point with what is shown in the book, and I found that really astounding. I give this book 5/5, and having it is a must whether your a rookie or experienced with crystalline glazes.

good information if you're firing cone 10
Almost all of the glaze recipes and firing schedules designed for very high-fire kilns (cone 10 and above).More information on achieving the intended effects at stoneware temperatures (cone 5-7) would have been more useful to me.

Wow!Material is hard to hard on Crystalline Glazes...
this is the most comprehensive book I've found.It has firing techniques, lots of glaze information and the technical information you need without it being overwhelming.

A good "how to" book
This book follows several artists and shows with good photos step by step through the process of making their style of figures.Of course they make it look easy and the level of skill required to make something similar is high but it does give you a good insight into the processes.Also shows photos of other artists works for inspiration.

A fly on the wall in a master sculptor's studio
This book was on my wish list and it was selected by my brother and his wife for a birthday gift. When I looked through the great illustrations, I was so very pleased with the detail and content of the techniques that were covered. I am a potter who is going more toward sculpture every day, and I know this book is going to be one of my favorite resources.

An Inspiring Guide
As a newcomer to clay sculpture, I found the nine projects used to demonstrate technique well beyond my ambitions. The simple step by step dscriptions and generally excellent illustrations however, were highly informative and relevant to anyone interested in this field. Each sculptor is introduced by their own account of their approach to their work. I found this only marginally useful although it will interest some.

More than Pretty Pictures
So many sculpture books show you only the final results.At best, you read the author or sculptor waxing poetic about the process, but this book shows step by step how large complicated pieces are produced.Is there an armature in there?Is it slab-built or solid and hollowed-out?Is that paint or glaze?This book tells you all that stuff.My only complaint is that it could be a little better organized.The editor also seemed really drawn to extremely dark artists, but it's not terribly distracting.Overall, beautiful book with a wealth of information. ... Nothing for mid-range potters
I looked all through the section on glaze formulas, and if you, like me, are always looking for new cone 5-7 glazes, forget this book.It's all cone 9-11 and cone 04.Save your money.

I've been waiting for this....
This book has very useful information for the studio potter, from formulating clays and glaze to troubleshooting problems. The author addresses common issues that I deal with daily in my job.The chapter on troubleshooting glaze has a wonderful reference chart for fixing your problem, and the kiln heat work chart is extremely helpful in teaching potters what chemical changes their clay is going through as it fires. If you're looking for a super reference handbook, this is it.

Reinforce Your Understanding with Practicality
The other favorable reviews have it right.He is a knowledgeable person.Read it several times with intervals in between. Each photo is there to illustrate a specific concept.There are many variables in potting about which the average hobbyist can get a glimpse here.Once you are able to get a bit of clay to stand up, your next challenge is Glaze.Determine to know something about it in order to understand (sorta) what's going on.I also recommend Mastering Cone 6 Glazes and John Britt's High Fire Book.This is a great place to start.

The Ceramic Design Book
Basically the subtitle says it all. This beautifully illustrated book consists entirely of photos and captions. But, oh my god, what an incredible collection of mind-expanding work. Each piece is perfectly crafted, fresh, and often whimsical. My eyes just got bigger and bigger with amazement as I flipped through this book for the first time. Covering the full range of the best in modern ceramics, this book has hundreds of full color photos to inspire beginners and professionals alike. There are large architectural pieces, thrown pots, handbuilt functional and decorative wares, low fired, pit fired, high fired and raku wonders - something to delight everyone.

This book is excellent. It will teach you not only everything you need to know to get started, but it gives glaze recipies and tips for intermediate types as well.I recommend it.

watch for hardback/paper - entirely different books
The paperback is not just a paper version of the hardback, which Amazon makes it sound like it is, but a whole different, and much better, book.The hardback (edition 2) has poor black and white photos and treats many subjects invery cursory way.The paperback has wonderfully original art in color, and is very thorough on ways of marking and glazing.I was not careful and now have a crummy 2nd edition hardback which I don't know quite what to do with.
My 5 stars are for the paperback.I would only give 2 stars to the 2nd edition hardback.

Excellent Starter Book on Glazing
For someone new to firing and glazes, this book is an excellent place to start. It explains things in simple terms, provides pictures and demystifies the process. While it doesn't provide an in-depth discussion of chemical changes and formulas or more than some basic recipes, it provided the basics I was looking for.

Good information for the possible dabbler.
I'm still not sure we're going to invest in a ceramics kiln, but this was a very interesting book about the craft.Too much biography of famous contemporary ceramic artists (totally uninteresting - these are not names that mean anything to me, so, bleah), but otherwise interesting explanations of different types and techniques.A very worthwhile book - it will probably either galvanize you into investing in the kiln and materials, or turn you away from it, saving your money! ... Contemporary Ceramics by Susan Peterson, Professor Emeritus at Hunter College, is a survey of recent ceramic art showing the work of over 260 artists, each with full-color illustrations, artist statements and brief biographies.It is not a technique book or a history of ceramics edition.It is a stunning array of artistic talent using a variety of techniques showing new artists and directions of new ceramic art. My only suggestions for improvement would be (for future reference) to include how the artists mark their work. ... Read more
