Product Description
Concern over the effects of airborne pollution, green house gases, and the impact of global warming has become a worldwide issue that transcends international boundaries, politics, and social responsibility. The 2nd Edition of Coal Energy Systems: Clean Coal Technology describes a new generation of energy processes that sharply reduce air emissions and other pollutants from coal-burning power plants.

Coal is the dirtiest of all fossil fuels. When burned, it produces emissions that contribute to global warming, create acid rain, and pollute water. With all of the interest and research surrounding nuclear energy, hydropower, and biofuels, many think that coal is finally on its way out. However, coal generates half of the electricity in the United States and throughout the world today. It will likely continue to do so as long as it's cheap and plentiful [Source: Energy Information Administration]. Coal provides stability in price and availability, will continue to be a major source of electricity generation, will be the major source of hydrogen for the coming hydrogen economy, and has the potential to become an important source of liquid fuels. Conservation and renewable/sustainable energy are important in the overall energy picture, but will play a lesser role in helping us satisfy our energy demands today. Dramatically updated to meet the needs of an ever changing energy market, Coal Energy Systems, 2nd Edition is a single source covering policy and the engineering involved in implementing that policy. The book addresses many coal-related subjects of interest ranging from the chemistry of coal and the future engineering anatomy of a coal fired plant to the cutting edge clean coal technologies being researched and utilized today. A 50% update over the first edition, this new book contains new chapters on processes such as CO2 capture and sequestration, Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) systems, Pulverized-Coal Power Plants and Carbon Emission Trading.
Existing materials on worldwide coal distribution and quantities, technical and policy issues regarding the use of coal, technologies used and under development for utilizing coal to produce heat, electricity, and chemicals with low environmental impact, vision for utilizing coal well into the 21st century, and the security coal presents.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid thermo book w/ some application
This book is well written and explains thermo science in detail. Not only does this book teach the theory; it teaches how to apply the theory in the design of real chemical systems. This book is tough sleding...although not as tough as Sandler's book on thermo, which is also, in my opinion, and better book.I

My only real dislike of this book is the formating...I read this book for long hours at a time in my thermo class (it was one of three books required for the course) and I must say the text and page layout of the book really bothered me. ... Read more

Most chemical reactions in industry and biology are catalytic and play a role at some stage of the processing of about 800f the goods manufactured in the U.S., yet catalysis is a neglected subject in chemical education. The fragmentary treatment accorded the topic until now is integrated. It covers, in a unified way, catalysis in solutions, by enzymes, in synthetic polymers within the molecular scale cages of zeolites and other molecular sieves, and on surfaces of inorganic solids. The central ideas are chemical; principles are illustrated by emphasizing industrial reactions and catalysts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read, informative, comprehendible.
The book is very easy reading. It has a good format and seems to have some good information. Good examples of analysis methods.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great textbook
System Safety Engineering And Risk Assessment is an excellent reference on how to engineer safety and manage risk. The clarity of the writing combined with understandable examples makes this book an outstanding text for a course on engineering safe systems.

This book starts by introducing the need and benefits of implementing a system safety program providing context for the later material.Key safety concepts and definitions are then introduced with references to relevant government and industry standards. A pragmatic discussion follows on the necessity of management and organizational support for an effective safety program. The book then details specific techniques for hazard identification and analysis including HAZOP, fault tree, FMEA, FMECA and a few lesser known methodologies. The overview of human factors analysis begins with the observation that "human error is an out-of-tolerance action within the human machine system."This discussion provides a comprehensive framework for the more advanced material referenced in the section. The only weakness was the following section on software safety, which lacked detailed descriptions of state-of-practice analysis techniques. The analysis section is strengthened by the discussion of accident and failure reporting systems and the associated databases that are used to support accident and reliability analyses. The final chapters of the book provide a practical discussion of how to manage risk using tailored versions the various techniques introduced in the previous sections.

All in all, this is a worthwhile reference for systems engineers and safety officials.

5-0 out of 5 stars Illuminating Systems Safety Overview
In this book, Nicholas Bahr has taken the complex discipline of systems safety and made it accessible in a logical, useful format. The book is clear and well illustrated (although a couple of the charts are a bit cumbersome and unwieldy), and calls upon numerous case studies to illustrate key points. There are separate chapters of Hazard Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, Safety Analysis in Engineering, and Safety Management.

While useful for engineers (particularly in the chemical processing or nuclear fields), this book is written in comprehensible terms that do not require an engineering background or technical education to understand. In fact, I believe that the biggest beneficiaries of this book are not engineers at all, but non-technical managers, who desperately need to understand safety systems, but often don't. In fact the chapter on Safety Management should be required reading for any manager in a safety critical environment, as it is an excellent "how to" guide to safety management of complex systems. This chapter has examples of correct safety management, and more importantly, excellent examples of the perils of management unwillingness to prioritize safety. The case study of the Nypro UK cyclohexane plant explosion in Flixborough, England is the best detailed, and has universal applications to safety systems across varying industries. The loss of the shuttle 'Challenger' is also reviewed from a systems safety vantage point, but while there are many errors to be analyzed and learned from there, more of the lessons are industry specific than are the lessons from the Flixborough example.

I used this book in a graduate class on systems safety. This is one of the best safety books I have seen, and is the most concise text on systems safety that I have ever read, far better, for instance, than the works of Perrow. Mr. Bahr is to be commended for his work; I look forward to reading more by him in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book for the student and the experienced professional
I used this book to teach system safety engineering to graduate students. The author provides the reader a background into system safety that lays the ground work for a functional and proactive system safety process.Thisbook provided workable examples to the student for comprehension of thematerial.Students as well as the instructor had a better understanding ofsystem safety and the integrationof the processes into general industrialand avaition safety programs/processes. I wish I had this book when I wastrying to explain to my management what system safety engineering was andhow it benefits the engineering department. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for fluid mechanics
I bought the 1st ed. (1970) which suprisingly seems identical in much of the content to the 3rd (2004) as a suppliment to a truely horrible book. This book seems to elaborate on many topics, qualitative and quantitative, that either aren't covered or only "covered"in other books. Not sure why its "for Chemical Engineers" as much of the material seems to be general fluid mechanics applicable to many other fields.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not good....
This book is bad.

In equation developments, it uses cartesian coordinates in a funky way.It changes them! This might not be a problem, but this book uses coordinate systems that don't follow the right-hand rule. For me this was very disturbing, because throughout my education the right-hand rule for coordinate systems was God's word.

Another thing is the example problems. When the book shows you the solution, it jumps right into numbers, without even showing you the symbolic development, or what numbers represent what variables. It expects you to infer this from the units!

N.B. I've only read the first 50 pages or so of this book, and my frustration led me to write this review. My opinions aren't supported with a complete sense of the book. Then again, the fact that even the elementary, development part of the book frustrates me could show just how bad this book will become in the latter parts.

2-0 out of 5 stars it is too superficial book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best book I've ever used.
I used this book for a graduate level course, "Advances in Pollution Prevention".This book is not the best book I've ever read. The end-of chapter problems are mediocre, and often insult the reader's ability, particularly as a graduate level chemical engineering student. One example that comes to mind is where the problem requests the student to "write a 2 page essay" on some topic or another. It could use a lot more "meat" - stronger use of reaction kinetics, thermodynamics, and transport phenomena. The writing is difficult to follow, and sounds like a government report (not surprising, as the authors work for the EPA).

Product Description

This book introduces the basic concepts of chemical engineering plant design and operation at a level understandable to graduate chemists and other scientists. It is aimed particularly at industrial chemists who find themselves working on chemical engineering-type unit operations. It is intended to be a "dip-in" reference, giving guidance on how to, for instance, design pumps, how to measure key process variables and how to use these to calculate the essential design parameters, such as heat and mass transfer coefficients, required for the design (and analysis) of typical unit operations (e.g. heat exchangers, distillation columns, reactors). Other issues, such as safety, project economic appraisal and process control are also covered. The book avoids derivations from first principles, simply providing the necessary equations and explaining and demonstrating their use.

Product Description
This book deals with the design and integration of chemical processes, emphasizing the conceptual issues that are fundamental to the creation of the process. Chemical process design requires the selection of a series of processing steps and their integration to form a complete manufacturing system. The text emphasizes both the design and selection of the steps as individual operations and their integration. Also, the process will normally operate as part of an integrated manufacturing site consisting of a number of processes serviced by a common utility system. The design of utility systems has been dealt with in the text so that the interactions between processes and the utility system and interactions between different processes through the utility system can be exploited to maximize the performance of the site as a whole.

Chemical processing should form part of a sustainable industrial activity. For chemical processing, this means that processes should use raw materials as efficiently as is economic and practicable, both to prevent the production of waste that can be environmentally harmful and to preserve the reserves of raw materials as much as possible. Processes should use as little energy as economic and practicable, both to prevent the build-up of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels and to preserve reserves of fossil fuels. Water must also be consumed in sustainable quantities that do not cause deterioration in the quality of the water source and the long-term quantity of the reserves. Aqueous and atmospheric emissions must not be environmentally harmful, and solid waste to landfill must be avoided. Finally, all aspects of chemical processing must feature good health and safety practice.

It is important for the designer to understand the limitations of the methods used in chemical process design. The best way to understand the limitations is to understand the derivations of the equations used and the assumptions on which the equations are based. Where practical, the derivation of the design equations has been included in the text.

The book is intended to provide a practical guide to chemical process design and integration for undergraduate and postgraduate students of chemical engineering, practicing process designers and chemical engineers and applied chemists working in process development. Examples have been included throughout the text. Most of these examples do not require specialist software and can be performed on spreadsheet software. Finally, a number of exercises have been added at the end of each chapter to allow the reader to practice the calculation procedures. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars CHEMICAL PROCESS DESIGN
DEAR SIRS:

THIS BOOK IS THE BEST CHOICE THAT I COULD DO.

I CHEECK ALL THE CONTENTS AND IT HAS ALL THE INFORMATION THAT I NEED, I'M A CHEMICAL ENGINEERING AND FOR MY IS TOO USEFUL.

THANKS

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book either as textbook or as handbook
Chemical Process Design and Integration covers all different aspects of conceptual chemical process design, using clear examples and thorough explanation. I enjoyed this book very much.

4-0 out of 5 stars What's Your Philosophy
What you think of what makes this book unique is what you think of the mid eightys publications of bodo linhoff on pinch technology. If nothing else the text doesn't cover fluid flow very well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction, slightly ouf of date
The book is very useful introduction into the field of pinch analysis by one of leading researchers in the field and covers everything that currently is standard practice in industry. It is not up to date with newerdevelopments like the application of pinch technolgy to waste watermanagement or to mass exchange networks and to the automatic generation ofheat exchanger networks via mathematical programming.

5-0 out of 5 stars good contents, poor printed to the figures
To publisher: I didn't understand well how do you make the figures including the words in your book. Some words and characters in some figures cannot see clearly, as page 62 figure 2.10. ... Read more
