2-0 out of 5 stars First half of book is really good...then it fails miserably
I had the fabulous experience of using this book at the college of where one of the professors used to teach so it was shoved down my throat how great this book is for two semesters. I have to say it's not too bad halfway through, it uses plenty of interesting diagrams to simplify the material or even add more information that couldn't be put in the text, it has interesting everyday examples of how the concepts fit in, or even easy experiments. One could reasonably get through the first half of the book (up to Chapter 9) without the CD and have a basic understanding of chemistry. The rest of the book goes straight downhill with explanations however. It tends to skip over details. You also need an EXTENSIVE mathematical background to understand even any remote concept past chapter 9, and in the examples showing how to do many of the formulas, steps are skipped leaving you to wonder what is going on. The diagrams get much more involved with way too much detail, or lacking explanation of the detail. The CD is really where the entire package fails though, as the questions for the chapters often do not relate at all, are set up to trick the student because the tiniest detail will be so complex, and when you do get a question wrong, it does not really help you to understand where to look for help or how to fix the problem you made. Most of the problems you're likely to make on the questions are extremely complex mathematical errors. Basically you have to make sure you have a masters in mathematics to even understand some of the examples in the CD, and there's no way to get through it without the help of an actual human being. The book seriously needs a much better editor, there's no need to skip over so many details on a subject that is often very difficult to so many students, especially those lacking a strong math background which is not always required for entry level chemistry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
To tell you frankly I am very poor in Chemistry. This book has been a great help in understanding facts. Thebook is wonderfully illustrated with examples and sample problems. This is a better or easier reading book than say Brady Senese (which is also a very good book btw)

5-0 out of 5 stars students and penny-pinchers
the international paperback version of this book is exactly the same as the hardback version and it's considerably less expensive.it comes with the CD-ROM but does NOT provide OWL or online access codes to the web based program- but you can purchase those separately at the thomas learning website... and you'd still be saving money.

as for the book, I've only been using it 3 weeks but I like it so far. (much better than chemistry: structure and dynamics which I used last term- blah!). while not for complete beginners the explanations and sample problems are well written and there are lots of homework questions to make sure you really understand the material. (odd answers are in the back of the book).the real selling point for me is that all the pictures are in color (very helpful if you're a visual learner).

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite possibly the greatest Chemistry text out there.
Chemistry and Chemical Reactivity: 6th Edition is by far the best introductory chemistry textbook out there. I have the pleasure of using this text in my AP Chemistry class, and I'm yet to be disappointed once. Every page of every chapter is well written, explained with a good amount of detail, and filled with charts and graphs which further the reader's understanding of the topics. I've gotten so used to this book that when I open up other chemistry books, I'm almost disgusted at how poorly written they are.

Sure, at a cost of $160, its not exactly cheap. I believe thatthis is a small price to pay for the contents of this book. Even though I got a free copy to use for the year, I plan on buying a copy and taking this to school with me next year.

Strongly recommended for anybody interested in Chemistry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I am taking first year inorganic chemistry, not because it is needed for any program, but because I enjoy the subject. Also, I have not seen the other chem texts for comparison. Having said that, I found this book extremely well written, and well coordinated with the solutions manual. It is dense, so you can't afford to miss a single sentence. I often wished the solutions manual could go into more detail when I needed remedial assistance. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Ok...
Took a few days longer then i would have liked, but not too bad!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Book is good, CD useless
The book has great examples and is very accessible for the beginner. The cd, on the other hand, is pretty useless for studying. I was expecting interactive tests and vocabulary- hands on learning. Instead it's very basic and random. For example, the first chapter has only 2 items to it- the first one being a short video on how an airbag works. How does this help me get an A?

5-0 out of 5 stars I still hate chemistry
Great textbook, it really helped me learn what I needed to for school.I still hate the class though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent descriptions, helpful excercises.
I'm currently a freshmen at a local college - Not the brightest person, but one that can catch on quite qickly. After getting that book, I flipped thought it before I actually needed for class. It describes everything with lots of precision, and gives real-life examples. At the end of every chapter are over 100 excercises on the things I learned. The whole book looks great on the inside, is organized very well, and is easy to understand - though some concepts are challenging to understand, the excercises at the end of the chapter (and the answers and steps to get the answers for odd problems at the back of the book) help make everything in depth yet easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent College-Level Introductory Chemistry Book
Although this book essentially starts from scratch, I'd recommend it to people who have already had high school chemistry. If you haven't had that, you should still do okay, but you may have to spend some extra time and effort since some of the most basic concepts are only skimmed over. They spend much more time on the material that you probably didn't cover in depth in high school chemistry.

First off, I would say that the book's content is excellent. It is an introductory (sort of) textbook, but it covers most of its topics in plenty of depth (at least as much as you would expect from an introductory general chemistry textbook). Also, the book does a great job at explaining the material in a clear fashion and it provides tons of illustrations. It is a very visual text and the author is obviously aware of the fact that visualizing chemical structures is extremely useful in understanding many of the concepts. This is especially useful in the section on covalent bonding.

The book also provides tons of useful exercises at the end of each chapter. The exercises range from very easy to fairly challenging, but they never seem too frustrating.Generally, I'd say that the exercises leaned more towards "easy" and are mostly just straight-forward applications of the material.Note: If you're having trouble, check out the ChemSkill Builder site. The exercises help a lot and it gives you useful feedback.

Whether it's for a class or for self-study, I would pick this book over any other.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book, great explanations
along with chemistry the central science by brown, this is a great book.i think using both books in tandem is well worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars chemistry book
It is a very good text book and it was cheaper than the bookstores at the university.

4-0 out of 5 stars book condition good
This book is in very good shape. It is a paper back version but the contents are exactly the same as a hardback version. The pages and chapters are the same. The cover of the book has slightly curled edges due to it being used. Other than that, the book is in good condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Story with Chemistry and Silberberg
I am a chemistry major, that does not translate to "I like chemistry" but more along the lines that it was the only feasible premedical degree major.
I never did chemistry in High School and suffered tremendously with the thought of majoring in a science that I was unfamiliar with. What if I hated it? What if I wasnt any good at it? these were questions that haunted me prior to starting my degree. When I did commence, I found textbooks to be very costly and wanted the best for my money.

I realized that the price of a textbook does not make it good, nor the lengthof it. In saying so I started my chemistry studies with two books, one known as Basic Concepts of Chemistry by Malone, published by Wiley and the second was this. Chemistry the Molecular Nature of Matter and Change by Silberberg, published by Mcgraw Hill.

The first book helped establish an understanding of the fundamentals of chemistry, it was an excellant transition from the layman's english into the scientific paradigm. However when one is doing undergraduate chemistry especially in a premedical degree, it ends up not only being a study but a competition.

I found both these books to take me, an Individual who knew absolutely nothing about chemistry without any prior education in the science to someone who is now relaxed even with Organic Chemistry.

My liking and my understanding of chemistry came directly from these two books. I still treasure them to this day and would suggest anyone in my position to get these books.

I have seen and in detail read over 13 general chemistry books from Cheng to Atkins and even Zumdahl. I would deem these two (Malone and Silberberg) to be the best of all of them. However I do suggest that you peruse through various textbooks in a library prior to buying as an author's writing style matters a lot.

Most people who have an issue with Silberberg see him as being too pleonastic however I would think that he gives substantially beneficial explanations to all those concepts which can potentially render an individual confused and perplexed. Another complaint people lodge with Malone is that his style is too generalized and basic....however one is supposed to be a primer and the second to give and individual a robust understanding of a variety of ideas in Chemistry which are used over and over. Therefore both are appropriately written for the purpose they serve. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The most helpful chem SAT II book out there
THis book really lays out the info in an easily understandable and organized way. It focuses on just the stuff you need to know and doesn't overwhelm you. The practice exams are great and really accurate. I read the book cover to cover like 3 times, did all the practice exams, and got a 780!!

1-0 out of 5 stars A Collection of Falsehoods
This book is not so much a chemistry review book as a beguiling, deceitful encounter with incompetence.Having read only two-thirds of the so-called review section, I discovered numerous serious errors. Some of these errors include claims that mass is measured in g/mL (p. 45) and that CO2(g) has molecules that are arranged in a regular geometric pattern (p. 57).Additionally, there were misleading statements and diagrams regarding bonds between and within water molecules (p. 85-87), inconsistent values in equations (e.g., p. 108 and 118), and discrepencies between descriptions and diagrams (e.g. p. 124).These more serious errors are in addition to other trivial typos that I discovered.Of course, it is possible that other important errors have escaped my notice, or exist in the chapters that I did not see fit to read. The author and publishing house ought to be ashamed of themselves.Though I was fortunate enough to realize the terrible unsuitability of this rubbish, I tremble for those who were not, and are about to embark on the daunting journey through the SAT II.When one reads this book, one is tempted to convert potential energy into kinetic energy--that is, to throw the book down in disgust.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book (like McGraw's SAT I book), be wary of other reviews
Like most McGraw test prep books, it is good quality and better than Princeton Review/Kaplan who I swear copy and paste those same "test taking" tricks from one book to another.Once you've read one, it's time to move on.But has anyone noticed that ALL of the other previous reviews are from NEW YORK.Moreover, most of them are only two sentences long, possibly indicating that someone decided to ensure this book had good reviews. If that's the case, that is really horrible because Amazon.com's reviews are generally pretty reliable unless they're reviews on a politically hot and polarized issue.Doing stuff like that is really demeaning to Amazon.com and its patrons.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you plan on passing the chemistry SAT II, buy this book
This was the best investment I ever made in buying a book to help me study for an important test such as the SAT II. This book goes step by step through the vast world of chemistry and condenses the material into simple concepts. Not only that but Thomas A. Evangelist makes several analogies to everyday life that allow for a more thorough understanding of chemistry on the whole. It also includes great pictures and actual SAT II exams for more practice. This is a great book for chemistry and a fantastic guide for preparing for the SAT II's

5-0 out of 5 stars All Hail Evangelist!!

book as good as new, got in on time, and overall i was satisfied with the purchase and the delivery process

4-0 out of 5 stars Chemistry Made Easy
I purchased this book to help with homework and I have found it to be very helpful. The book covers the basics of a high school chemistry course but unlike most textbooks or internet resources, it tries to break down and simplify chemistry to make it more manageable. For example, I was having a difficult time explaining Lewis Dot structures or even finding a good resource for understanding it on the web.The author did a very good job of simplifying the approach whereby the generation of these structures made sense. The periodic table that is included in the book is detachable and also helpful.I would have liked a few more problems and some additional pictures may have been helpful but it was an excellent resource especially when combined with a number of the fine websites and interactive periodic tables on the web.It certainly made my life easier helping with homework and recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars I still need some help.
Please count me as an "idiot", because this book helped me a little bit, but rushed through some concepts. I'm currently in it and I'll give you some examples.
First, the hokey jokey stuff gets tiring to me. I do like analogies, but the jokes are a waste of time.
Second, the first few chapters are very easy and then, in chapter 5, they ask you to figure quantum orbitals, I think. And then they go into Electron configurations by telling you this element is in the "s" region and they don't show you where the "s" region is on the periodic table is.
He eases you in with a bunch of jokes and then spills acid on you. Not fun.
I need more description and less silly jokes

5-0 out of 5 stars Good stuff

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK!
This book has helped me understand Chemistry better than the teacher did!The way the author explains it, he makes it very easy and I am a novice in this area.Whenever my teacher confuses me, I don't worry because I know that this book will explain it to where I can understand!I am going to buy Physics next!

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST Chemistry Review I've every used
This book is an excellent aid in the study of chemistry. It explains concepts from chemistry far better than most textbooks. I recommend buying this review if you are taking high school chemistry, preparing for the AP Chemistry or SAT II Chemistry exam, or are taking college/university chemistry. It is obvious Mr. Curran is an expert teacher because he explains concepts so well in the book. I look forward to reading his "Homework Helpers - Physics" book which I bought at the same time as this chemistry book. It's too bad all chemistry books can't be this helpful, and at under $15 it's a bargain.I think they would even make great gifts for all those you know who are taking chemistry at any level. 5 stars, definitely recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars I passed my chemistry class because of this book
I'm in a Registered Nurse program and was struggling to understand chemistry and the textbook that the school had supplied. I had failed one exam and several dry lab assignments so I bought this book, referred to it often, did the exercises and exam questions in it and I ended up passing with an A, but also with the top score in the class! The practice exercises are great because they explain why an answer is correct-that way if you didn't get the right answer the first time you can see what you did wrong. I would recommend this book to any beginning chemistry student

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect for those taking chem!
This book has come to be a major help! You are able learn things as your teacher would tell them to you in a clear, one-on-one basis manner.

I would definitely reccomend this if you are taking Chemistry!!

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!
I can't say enough how good this book is!This has been a real life saver!!!I am using this for a College Chemistry class and it really is helping.Unfortunately, college professors don't "teach" and just give you the info to study on your own. That's where this book comes in and fills in all the gaps.

It's like having a private tutor right there with you, each step of the way.Buy this book, you won't be disappointed! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The weakest of Gonick s books
I have all of Gonick s great cartoon books and was really expecting more from this one... I am teaching chemistry and was disappointed. Just compare it with Genetics in cartoons...Chemistry is not as boring as shown here, Larry!

2-0 out of 5 stars Cartoon guide to chemistry
It is so basic in concepts and the presentation (materials and graphics)is not as good as I thought. It would be useful to show some pages of the book to the customers.

I am a high school chemistry teacher. I was totally disapointed with the book to the point of returning. It is factually correct, but lame. The only thing I gleaned from this book was the origin of the word alchemist. I would not by this book. William "Douey" Doucette

4-0 out of 5 stars The Cartoon Guide to Chemistry
I used this book in conjunction with a textbook in my general chemistry course over the summer. This book helped illustrate things left unclear in my textbook and give a better intuitivefeel for what I was doing. On its own its probably not spectacular since there are gaps to be filled but as a supplement it is amazing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for supplements
I found that this book works well when used with an introductory textbook. The cartoons are great fun for everyone. ... Read more

Book Description
John McMurry's international best-seller is widely and consistently praised as the most clearly written book on the market. Why? In John McMurry's words: "I have been asked hundreds of times over the past ten years why I wrote this book. I wrote this book because I love writing. I get great pleasure and satisfaction from taking a complicated subject, turning it around until I see it clearly from a new angle, and then explaining it in simple words. I write to explain chemistry to students the way I wish it had been explained to me years ago." Through his lucid writing and ability to show the beauty and logic of organic chemistry, McMurry makes learning enjoyable for students. The highest compliment that can be given to a chemistry book applies to McMurry: It works! Mainstream in level, McMurry's coverage is concise yet doesn't omit any key topics. McMurry blends the traditional functional-group approach with a mechanistic approach. The primary approach, by functional group, begins with the simple and progresses to the more complex so that readers who are not yet versed in the subtleties of mechanisms are first exposed to the "what" of chemistry before beginning to grapple with the "why." Within this primary organization, the author places a heavy emphasis on explaining the fundamental mechanistic similarities. In this edition, McMurry retains his standard-setting features (including his innovative vertical format for explaining reaction mechanisms) while revising his text line-by-line to include hundreds of small but important improvements. For example, the Sixth Edition includes new examples, additional steps in existing examples, new problems, new phrases to clarify the exposition, and a vibrant new art program. In addition, new icons in the text lead students to a variety of new online resources. McMurry's text is in use at hundreds of colleges and universities around the world, from North America, to the United Kingdom and the Pacific Rim. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Text
I have used this text in my Organic classes and have found it very useful and informative. The author uses clear explanations and examples for all key elements in each chapter. The mechanisms and reactions are clearly described and detailed. Also for every college student the solutions manual reveals it all.It has both odd and even solutions. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because not all of the exercise problems really follow what you actually get taught in class, but they are still useful.Great text overall.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book
This seemed like an okay book for chemistry. There were a few things that we covered in class however, that were not in this book, just a couple of reactions.I recommend the book "Pushing Electrons" as a supplement to this to help with resonance, it helped me a lot.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Comprehensive Review
Good Textbook, clear and concise. However, for an advanced student who needs or wants to learn advanced explanations refer to another textbook on occasion. I use this as a reference on occasion b/c it serves my needs just fine, the SOLUTIONS/STUDY Guide manual is a must and gives very detailed explanations of the problems in the text, the manual is EXCELLENT.The strong point of this book are the practice questions which really get you thinking.

1-0 out of 5 stars Will not help at all!!!
This book was the required textbook for my organic I and II class...and it didn't help with either. If you didn't understands something the way the professor explained it, the book provided no help. The explainations in it were very short and were of no help at all. Most of the time the examples were too simple to really teach you anything. This is a very elementary textbook, that doesn't seem worthy to me of a place in any college or university.

2-0 out of 5 stars Didn't help me!
This text is an easy read, and you will understand the reactions that are given in the text examples. So why the low rating? Organic chemistry is all about "prediction". And when it comes to teaching you how to predict the outcomes of reactions you've never seen before, it is lacking! You can study this text two hours a day, every day, and unless you have an uncanny ability to understand chemistry (I don't)--you will still not have this most fundamental skill you need to succeed.Try "Organic Chemistry as a Second Language" and "Organic Chemistry II as a Second Language".They will have you predicting and understanding Orgo in no time!! This course isn't hard at all- once someone explains it to you properly. David Klein (the author of those two books) does that beautifully. ... Read more

Book Description
Designed for the two-semester general chemistry course, Chang’s best-selling textbook continues to take a traditional approach and is often considered a student and teacher favorite. The book features a straightforward, clear writing style and proven problem-solving strategies. It continues the tradition of providing a firm foundation in chemical concepts and principles while presenting a broad range of topics in a clear, concise manner.

The new edition of Chemistry continues to strike a balance between theory and application by incorporating real examples and helping students visualize the three-dimensional atomic and molecular structures that are the basis of chemical activity. An integral part of the text is to develop students' problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

A hallmark of the ninth edition is the integration of many tools designed to inspire both students and instructors. The textbook is a foundation for the unparalleled, effective technology that is integrated throughout. The multimedia package for the new edition stretches students beyond the confines of the traditional textbook. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars a very poor chemistry text
There are many problems with this text. The order in which the concepts are taught is pedagogically unsound (and different from many established texts). But most important is that there are many errors.Clearly, fundamental chemistry is based upon physics.Dr. Chang's explanations of the underlying physics concepts contain many errors. There are some "chemistry" errors as well. One would think the errors would have been rooted out by the 9th edition.I purchased another text used at a highly respected "institute of technology" to read in addition to (in place of where possible) Dr. Chang's text. While this other text is considered more difficult, it was less difficult in the sense that I didn't have to spend time figuring out where Dr. Chang was correct and where he was not.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introductory text
Chang's Chemistry, 9th edition, is a well written text that is good for a freshman-level general chemistry sequence. For the most part, the text is easy to understand and does not require re-reading. Sections on thermodynamics and molecular orbital theory, however, were confusing. I would not recommend the accompanying solutions manual; it is overpriced considering it only provides answers to odd-numbered problems, which are already in the back of the text. Overall a good book, which I would recommend. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Buy
This was a last minute purchase for school and the book was shipped quickly and arrived on time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely necessary for O Chem!
if you're taking o chem, then you need this book.the summaries are helpful for review of chapters or in the worst case scenario, in substitution of the chapters.but the most important part of this book are the solutions to the problems.the only way you'll learn organic chemistry, like it or not, is by practicing problems.this solutions manual is the only way to know if you're doing those problems correctly - the text book does NOT contain solutions for problems in the book, beside the worthlessly easy ones contained directly in the chapters.in addition to the solution, it contains an explanation for all problems that require one.

THIS BOOK IS WELL WORTH THE MONEY!you won't be disappointed.if anything, go in on it with a friend that is also taking the course.you WILL need this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good with 1st edition
This study guide/solutions manual matches the first edition of Organic Chemistry.Questions have been changed, rearranged, and added in the second edition, and the guide isn't nearly as useful or easy to use with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very well explained, to the point, and thorough.A must have for the textbook.
Several sample problems are worked out in every chapter to illustrate the material covered. They are all very clearly explained.

In addition, there are also more than enough problems at the end of each chapter to help students better understand the topics covered, however the answers are not provided in the back of the textbook.

This is precisely why the solutions manual is a must buy.I have worked all the problems presented from chapter 1 to chapter 21 (to include the end of chapter problems), and I have encountered only two or three "bad problems" for which the answers were not explained clearly.Almost every answer to every problem is clearly illustrated - some concepts are even better explained in the solutions manual than in the textbook!

It's expensive, but it's worth the money if you use it properly.I'd wish the buyer good luck in this class, but I doubt any disciplined, devoted student would need it after using this text.

4-0 out of 5 stars Opinion
I benefited from this book immensely. If you are taking this class do yourself a big favor and buy it. If you are going to do something do it right and working the problems is the key. I got it for around 30$.

2-0 out of 5 stars Needs a better editor
I bought this book along with the Bruice text for the organic class I'm taking right now. A solutions manual is indispensable for checking the answers to the problems you do - so I was going to buy the book anyway.Problem is, it looks like this solutions manual is the solutions manual for the 5th editon, only with a new cover so it looks like it's for the 6th edition. This would be fine, except that the problems in the 5th edition are not the same problems used in the 6th edition.I'd say that 90% of the time, the solutions manual is right - but is 90% good enough for people who are trying to learn the subject, and just end up getting more confused by a solutions manual with solutions for the wrong problem??I think the publisher should offer a correct copy free to anyone who shelled out $88 for this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Another solutions manual.
I feel that this book is fine for a reference to the text book problems. The only complaint is that going through nearly the first half of the book, I have found a few minor typos.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book by Bruice!
I'm an advanced physics student, and decided to take organic chemistry since i was curious about reaction mechanisms.I must say, i was very satisfied with the book by Bruice. The mechanisms were very detailed, and the book seem to go into a little more detail than most books that i had looked at.I loved my organic chemistry class and although found it much easier than physics, it had it's challenging areas....and Bruice's book help me understand these challenging areas.in the end, i highly recommend this book if you want to understand organic chemistry at a much more detailed level. ... Book Description

For two-semester or three-quarter courses in General Chemistry.

The author’s goal in writing this book is to deliver the depth of coverage faculty want with the accessibility and clarity that students need for success.Nivaldo J. Tro’s Chemistry: A Molecular Approach explains difficult chemical concepts in a concise and clear student-centered manner while also providing faculty with the flexibility to go more deeply into many key, often neglected topics, such as electron diffraction, molecular orbital theory, and free-energy changes under non-standard conditions.Chemistry is presented visually throughmulti-level images (macroscopic, molecular and symbolic representations), which helps students see the connections among the formulas (symbolic), the world around them (macroscopic), and the atoms and molecules that make up the world (molecular).Every aspect of this book focuses students on recognizing that the behavior of matter is based on the behavior of atoms and molecules.

3-0 out of 5 stars ??
They were out of stock so my order was cancelled.I did received my refund in a timely manner.

5-0 out of 5 stars An engaging and well organized new text for general chemistry
This is a new textbook for general chemistry.Yes, there a quite a number of general chemistry texts and they all cover roughly the same general material. They differ more in how they organize the material, illustrate it, and their method of helping the student develop a solid understanding and command of this basic material. The student not only needs to learn the basic facts of chemistry, she needs to learn how to think about it so when she looks at the world, she can see and understand the issues as they relate to this vital science.

Dr. Tro begins this book by explaining how the text was developed and provides instructions for the student on how to make the most of the book.I liked this a great deal.He starts the book by providing what he thinks is the most important scientific idea in all of human knowledge: "the properties of matter are determined by the properties of molecules and atoms".From there he builds all the principles taught in general chemistry. He also define chemistry as: "the science that seeks to understand the behavior of matter by studying the behavior of atoms and molecules".

Each chapter is organized in a similar fashion and a great deal of emphasis is placed on making the illustrations demonstrate a principle - a process - rather than an isolated picture.Tro also has interesting articles of chemistry in various fields in different chapters and he often introduces ideas with practical issues that will likely matter to the student.

For review, at the end of each chapter he goes over the key concepts taught, the key equations and relationships discussed, and the key skills that the student is expected to have learned. He provides exercises to test one's mastery of the material that the student can answer for himself. The problems are organized by chapter topic. Those listed with blue numbers have answers provided in the back of the book. There are also cumulative problems that build on skills learned previously, challenge problems, and conceptual problems that go a bit further than the minimum requirements of chapter mastery.

Besides Appendix III with selected answers, there are others with key equations, useful data, and a glossary. And there is a good index, as well.

I think it is a handsome and very useful text for teaching and learning general chemistry.A general reader could benefit from studying from it because it is clear and engaging enough that one can work through what is being taught. ... Read more

Book Description

Since its original appearance in 1977, Advanced Organic Chemistry has maintained its place as the premier textbook in the field, offering broad coverage of the structure, reactivity and synthesis of organic compounds. As in the earlier editions, the text contains extensive references to both the primary and review literature and provides examples of data and reactions that illustrate and document the generalizations. While the text assumes completion of an introductory course in organic chemistry, it reviews the fundamental concepts for each topic that is discussed.

The two-part fifth edition has been substantially revised and reorganized for greater clarity. Among the changes: Updated material reflecting advances in the field since 2001s Fourth Edition, especially in computational chemistry; A companion Web site provides digital models for study of structure, reaction and selectivity; Solutions to the exercises provided to instructors online.

The material in Part A is organized on the basis of fundamental structural topics such as structure, stereochemistry, conformation and aromaticity and basic mechanistic types, including nucleophilic substitution, addition reactions, carbonyl chemistry, aromatic substitution and free radical reactions. Together with Part B: Reaction and Synthesis, the two volumes are intended to provide the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate student in chemistry with a sufficient foundation to comprehend and use the research literature in organic chemistry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comments on Carey 2007
I have been using this book since the first edition, in my postgraduation courses and each time, it is better. The 5th edition introduced aspects that we awere longing for, like, for example, new achievements in the area of aromaticity and improvements in the first chapter. The best improvement was attached to problems solving (despite being not so friendly) and 3D figures. A CD should be added to the next edition.

3-0 out of 5 stars Undergraduate text
This text is good for an advanced undergraduate course. It is a pretty good reference, with two major problems:

1)The book is a flimsy paperback.Other paperbacks I have can withstand usage just fine, but after 1 month the text was in two pieces. It feel apart at the binding.I never even brought it to class, it sat on the bookshelf and fell apart after twice a week readings.

2)The solutions are presented as references to journal articles.I am not too shy of searching for articles, but when you are in a crunch it would be nice to not have to search through 10 pages of tangential information to find the one data or conclusion you need in order to verify the accuracy of your work.

Besides for that, it worked just fine for my advanced undergrad course in physical organic chemistry.I did have to make frequent references to other sources for more in-depth information, but when study time came it worked better than the myriad organic texts available at my library.

2-0 out of 5 stars save your money for Physical Organic Chemistry - by Dougherty & Anslyn
This book is written at the undergraduate level. The figures are a joke. It's a paperback and will fall apart. If you are in graduate school; buy the text by Anslyn & Dougherty instead. It is a nice hard bound book, durable & weighs a ton. Its worth the money and the weight in your backpack.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
It is now more than a month after I was supposed to receive this book and I have not gotten it yet, what the hell is going on.

4-0 out of 5 stars Update of a Classic
This is an update on a classic text that has been used by many graduate and advanced undergraduate students. The core of the book is still an excellent survey of older literature and of enormous use to students. There are also many excellent problems.Unfortunately, there is not as much new material or references in some sections.I found I had to frequently supplement the text with current readings. The use of modern theory is especially lacking. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars is this useful for AP chem?
this text book was provided by my school to use throughout the year in ap chem. although the step-by-step worked problems in each chapter's text were sometimes helpful, they tended to make things too complicated. when i missed a lecture and tried to complete my homework solely from the book,i found myself working problems in a completely different manner from my instructor- whose methods tended to be much faster and easier to use. in addition, i didn't see any information on solutions with mulitple solutes in the book, and unfortunately that was a major topic on the free response questions this year. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars 5th Edition Misses the Mark--Loaded with Errors
This review is specifically meant to refer to the latest edition (5th ed.) of this book. The earlier editions were quite good, but the 5th edition completely misses the mark.Ordinarily, one would think that a book such as this would get better and better with each new edition. Not so with this book. For some reason, the 5th edition is loaded with mistakes.....many of these appear to be typesetting errors (e.g., atoms in the wrong place, pentavalent carbons, nonsense intermediates within reaction pathways, etc.).It is terribly disappointing.I do not know what happened at the publisher this time, but, in good conscience, they really should not have released this book the way it is.It does not appear to have been the authors' fault, but rather it was likely the fault of Springer (the publisher). This looks like an example of the mindless side of capitalism....large publishing companies who have already taken over much of their competition also have ridiculous deadlines to meet quarterly earnings goals, so they rush through the publication process and end up turning out garbage. The only way that these companies ultimately avoid getting into a heap of trouble with the FTC or other consumer advocate agencies is by issuing online addendums filled with corrections to the myriad of errors. Ask yourselves, is that why you want to buy a new book..... so that you have to download a 50-page corrections addendum to fix all of the errors that the publisher missed or opted not to correct in the first place? This sort of thing is happening more and more these days in the publishing industry, even with software. And the larger and larger these publishing companies become, the more we see it. I recommend that you DO NOT BUY the 5th edition of this book; it should have been recalled by the publisher, and everyone who bought it should have received a refund. However, if you really want to buy Carey and Sundberg's book, then buy the 4th edition used; you will be much happier.Apparently, Springer scaled back on qualified staff and/or hired a bunch of publishing flunkies sometime between the release of the 4th and 5th editions of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive
This is probably the most comprehensive text book available for Organic Chemistry, Develops largely on the Part A of the book. So for a complete understanding you need to possess the Part A of the book. Largely covers the topic of Synthesis and Reactions which is an important part of the Graduate education in Organic Chemistry. Earlier editions of the book cover the same material and are almost as good as this one but each topic in this edition builds up with a different approach of Computational and Theoretical Chemistry.
The references provided in each chapter ensure the complete and total understanding of the subject and help in the student in research.
Overall a great book for the Graduate student in Organic Chemistry.
