Book Description
Presenting the fundamentals of child psychiatry in an enjoyable and easily readable format, this book is an accessible introduction to child mental health. It begins by looking at child development and the different theories used to explain mental health problems, including attachment theory. The nature and prevalence of child mental health problems are then described, as are treatment and management approaches. Particular attention is paid to at risk groups including, for instance, young offenders, children excluded from school and homeless children. The authors also consider the concept of mental health and the cultural context of its use.

Containing case studies and self-directed exercises, and outlining the services available to children with mental health problems, this handbook is an invaluable resource for students, trainers and professionals working or seeking to work with children with mental health problems in a non-medical environment, as well as parents wanting to know more about the subject. ... Book Description
If you're a parent of one of the more than one million children in this country with obsessive-compulsive disorder, you know how confusing, even frightening, the symptoms of OCD can be. You're terrified of losing your child and angry about the havoc this disorder has wreaked in your family. More than anything, you want to be able to unlock the secrets of OCD, understand the cause of your child's bizarre symptoms, and help your child break free of these disruptive, relentless thoughts and actions.

In her landmark book, Freeing Your Child from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Dr.  Tamar E. Chansky creates a clear road map to understanding and overcoming OCD based on her successful practice treating hundreds of children and teenagers with this disorder. In Part I, Dr. Chansky "cracks the code" of the peculiar rules and customs of OCD -- the handwashing, tapping, counting, and so forth. She explains how OCD is diagnosed, how to find the right therapist partner, and how to tailor treatment options to your child's needs. You'll learn how powerful behavioral modification can be and when medication can help. In Part II, you'll learn how not to be pulled in by your child's debilitating rituals at home or at school, how to talk to your child about the "brain tricks" OCD causes, and how to create an effective OCD battle plan that will empower your child to "boss back" the OCD monster. You'll also learn how to cope in moments of crisis.

Part III offers specific advice for how to help your child handle the most common manifestations of OCD such as fears of contamination, checking, getting things "just right," intrusive thoughts, and more. Part IV is an indispensable guide to additional resources, including books, videos, organizations, and websites.

Filled with Dr. Chansky's compassionate advice and inspiring words from the many children with OCD whom she has helped, this book  will be your lifeline. Battling back from OCD is hard work, but with the comprehensive, proven guidance in this book, you can help your child reclaim a life free from its grip. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
This book is outstanding.I found my 12 year old son crying in his room because he knew that something was happening to him that he didn't understand.Soon, thereafter, he wouldn't go outside at night, he was afraid to go to school, the checking rituals were exhausting him, the popups (explained in the book) were frightening to him......all of this developed shortly after he turned 12 years old.Once it began, it felt like each day, something new and confusing washappening to him.Because I have some understanding of OCD, I was able to recognize the symptoms, but I did not know how to specifically help him.He started seeing a counselor, we had other support, I tried to educate myself, using all available avenues, to try to help my son, and our doctor was involved, as well.Although our doctors and counselors are wonderful, ultimately, I spend the most time with my son, and I knew that I would be doing the "work" with my son to help him deal with OCD. This book taught me how to communicate this issue to my son and it worked WONDERS.Within about four months, my son had control over these issues. It did take several months of hard work, but I saw progress with each week It's been 18 months and he has no symptoms. He's functioning absolutely fine in our family and in the community (school, sports, etc.)I've read several books on this subject and this book is what 'turned the key' for us.I read it and then he and I have read sections of it together that pertained to him.He was relieved to know that he is not the only person that deals with this issue, that what he was going through actually had a name, and as soon as we were able to identify it, he and I were able to begin to talk about how to help him. This is an amazing book and I am so thankful to the other reviewers that recommended this book.Until you actually go through something like this with your child, you can not understand how exhausting OCD can be for the child and how helpless you can feel as a parent. This book explains what OCD is and how to clearly help your child with their specific symptoms.

5-0 out of 5 stars YOU HAVE TO KEEP READING AND DO IT FOR THE CHILD
I bought 3 OCD books from Amazon and so happy with all three of them. They are books that you have to keep going back to make sure you understand and doing what it tells you to do for the sake of your child.
OCD is not fun for children with it and theyneed our help to get them out of it if all possible.
Shop Amazon they have more good reading on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Excellent book for parents of a child (no matter the age) who is struggling with OCD.Gives good insight and tips for helping your child along the path to wellness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential, helpful information on OCD and your role as a parent.
This book was recommended by my 9 year old daughter's counselor as a guide for parents and it definitely hits the mark for me. Beginning with 'What is OCD' and moving towards the 'What to do if you suspect OCD', this book is written in a clear, detailed way. I found myself slowly reading, and sometimes re-reading sections of the book prior to moving forward. It's filled with a lot of information. Take your time and soak it in and build on your knowledge.

Eventually you will get to sections of the book that focus on treatment and what parents can do to assist their children in combating OCD. The book alone will not 'fix' OCD, but it helps guide you to recognize it and what you can do; as a parent, to help your child. The book lets you know you are not alone and there is hope for getting your child, family and life back on track and away from OCD's grasp.

I have shared this book with my daughter's grandparents and her teachers. It really has helped us all to gain knowledge as to what is OCD, and how we can not let this bully take away the joyful spirit of those who are dear to us.

5-0 out of 5 stars So helpful as a companion to therapy
If your child is suffering from OCD and you're exploring therapy, this book should help reinforce the behavior therapy techniques that will be taught to get the disorder under control. You'll learn exactly what kinds of things to say and what not to in a crisis moment. This book made me feel like there is hope, and it has helped enormously. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars actually helped a lot!
I just took the child board exam and this question-and-answer book actually helped a lot.The exam takes three days: half of one for the written exam, a 75 minute preschool/school age oral exam, and a 60 minute live adolescent oral exam. This book helps the most with the written exam. The questions are similar to the type on the real exam.Hendren provides questions in either multiple choice or K-type format, with some matching questions. These are followed by answers and brief explanations. The explanations are usually helpful, but there are some that are confusing or skimpy.I actually got frustrated with a few of them. The material is a little dated (little on atypicals and a lot on tricyclics). But overall you will learn a lot and be in full "question mode" during the exam. There are a couple sections at the end of the book to help prepare for the oral exams. The preschool/school age one is more pertinent, because there is a written vignette on the actual exam.Overall, this book is well worth the investment! ... Book Description
According to many introductory psychology textbooks, Westerners are placing an increasingly high value on the welfare of their children. This humanistic cultural shift has not found its way into developmental psychology courses at the college level, leaving a vital gap in curriculum at many universities. Until now.

From a fresh, holistic perspective, psychology professor Eugene M. DeRobertis applies humanistic viewpoints in psychology to the study of child development. Unlike most child development texts that concentrate on the subdivisions of the child's personality, the observations and discussions here focus on the child as a whole. Drawing upon many schools of thought including American humanism, existential-phenomenology, psychoanalysis, neo-analytic theories, object-relations theory, self-psychology, and Gestalt psychology, Dr. DeRobertis opens an important dialogue to all teachers and students of psychology.

Packed with illustrations, empirical findings, references, and key terms and concepts, Humanizing Child Developmental Theory delivers an overarching theoretical framework for putting developmental issues into context. A significant and accessible contribution to developmental theorizing, this groundbreaking text gives psychology instructors and their students a relevant and much-needed humanistic approach to child development.

Book Description
Despite the increased focus on self-esteem over the past three decades, depression in children has continued to grow, now affecting a quarter of all kids today. To combat this trend, Dr. Seligman began the Penn Depression Prevention Project, the first long term study aimed at 8 to 12 year olds. His findings were revolutionary, proving that children can be against depression by being taught how to challenge their pessimistic thoughts.

The Optimistic Child offers parents and teachers the tools developed in this study to teach children of all ages life skills that transform helplessness into mastery and bolster self-esteem. Learning the skills of optimism not only reduces the risk of depression but boosts school performance, improves physical health, and provides children with the self-reliance they need as they approach the teenage years and beyond. world of optimists is a bigger world, a world of more possibilities, says Seligman. 5-0 out of 5 stars Learned Optimism -- wonderful simple wisdom!!!
I read many of Dr. Seligman's books for a paper and presentation I did in a Psychology class -- my professor was very impressed -- I also utilized his method with a 4 year old child who had the "I can't do it" attitude -- with the book and his mother purchased it -- within a matter of a month that little boy moved from "I can't do it" to "let me try to do it and if I need your help I'll ask you to help me" -- that was so amazing for his mother to hear -- and he started saying that the first day I asked the child care teacher in his class if I could spend my lab hour with him when he told me "I can't do it" -- the project -- fingerpainting -- by the end of the hour with him - he was fingerpainting with his nose, elbows and was deliriously happy that HE COULD DO IT!(Now you may laugh and think "what is there difficult about fingerpainting?" -- well to most children and to adults there is not - but for this little one it was his "pattern" to first respond to anything with "I can't do it" -- to move a child from the "I can't do it" to "let me try on my own" is a WONDERFUL accomplishment. And what I found with all of Dr. Seligman's books - read each and every footnote -- many of them are absolutely hilarious and full of common wisdom!!I would recommend them to anyone having a child that is having difficulty overcoming what we may perceive as simple obstacles -- an example is a little one that told me of his fear of kindergarten -- his fear was he was afraid he would not remember all his classmates names - I explained that he was a smart little boy and that within a few weeks he would learn all those names -- 2 weeks later I saw him on my bus - and he was overjoyed!! Yes he had learned all the names of all those classmates (his mom was so pleased that I had inadvertently learned something that had baffled her when she talked with him about kindergarten -- she had not been able to figure it out but he shared his "fear" with me and simple explanation that he did not know all the names of the children in his 4-K classroom when he started attending and learned all of them helped him to overcome a fear of kindergarten.I do hope this book is reprinted.I'm going to buy several used copies to give to some new parents I know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quick delivery, great book
What can I say, the book arrived in three days.It is an excellent book.

4-0 out of 5 stars lots of actvities given
If you are around kids a lot, as a parent or through your work, this book will likely be quite useful. It gives lots of learning activities for kids and goes into a lot of detail. However, if you don't need as much detail and also want suggestions for adults, I recommend "Learned Optimism" which covers the key points from this book and also addresses adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be taught in all schools and used at home by parents
Very easy to read, learn and to put in practice by carfully following the instructions and exercises.Worthwhile for all people who work with children ages 8 and up including counselors/therapists, teachers and parents. The techniques the adult learns to help create and foster realistic optimism in the book can improve the adult reader's life as well as the lives of children. I wish all grade schools would implelment these techiques that should, in my opinion also be taught in all parenting classes.Children are likely to enjoy this learning because of the way it is presented is fun for kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Empowering book
sensible down to earth book which can help parents to assess the pessimistic messages they have given their children...also is straightforward in how to change those messages ... Read more

Book Description

This text addresses the basics of developmental psychopathology in a clear manner, with enough detail to facilitate a real understanding of the concepts and their relevance to clinical work with children.                                                                                                      ~ Christie P. Karpiak, University of Scranton

This introductory undergraduate text on child and adolescent psychopathology adopts a developmental psychopathology approach to understanding child disorders. The authors examines the emergence of disorders over time, pays special attention to risk and protective factors that influence developmental processes and trajectories, and examines child psychopathology in the context of normal development.

The author has four main goals: to show students why an understanding of child psychopathology and its treatment might be important to them as future psychologists, social workers, educators, and/or parents; to introduce students to the developmental psychopathology perspective and how it can help organize understanding of childhood disorders; to help students appreciate the interdependence of psychological research and clinical practice; and to engage students in higher-level thinking necessary to analyze information, critically evaluate ideas, and create solutions to real-world problems based on empirically validated findings.

Key Features

  • Links research with clinical practice via a focus on evidence-based therapies for childhood disorders, balancing solid empirical science and clinical insights and thus helping students filter clinically valuable findings from those lacking utility
  • Emphasizes the developmental perspective to better understand psychopathology, with use of normal development as a lens through which to view abnormal behavior or emotional problems
  • Provides case studies and real-life examples in each chapter, allowing the student to understand how the material relates to specific situations
  • Incorporates assessment methods into specific content modules rather than isolating assessment as a separate and discrete chapter
  • Utilizes smaller, more focused modules to allow for greater flexibility for instructors and students and to avoid the problem (seen in other texts) of lumping dissimilar problems into longer chapters
  • Offers end-of-chapter review questions that help students apply, analyze, and evaluate the information in the chapter, requiring them to critically think about the material
  • Offers suggested additional readings describing etiological models, empirical studies, or treatment approaches, as well as current research articles.
  • Accompanied by an Instructor's Resource CD-Rom (for qualified adopters of the text) with a computerized test bank; sample syllabi; chapter overview and outline; PowerPoint slides; discussion questions and classroom activities; chapter-specific video resources; and chapter-specific web resources
  • Features a student study site at www.sagepub.com/weisiacapstudy with interactive quizzes; e-flashcards; Internet exercises; 3-5 journal articles per chapter with discussion/critical thinking questions; list of recommended websites; links to video clips and film suggestions

Book Description
This is one of the few books to critically examine both modern and postmodern contributions to theoretical development in child and adolescent psychology. It was written especially to take into account findings from a focus group of honors psychology students. This allowed the author to
include pedagogical features such as an overview of theories linking the various schools of thought, ideas for further study, and links to selected web sites; as well as the latest developments in theoretical thinking. ... Read more

Book Description
With all of the conflicting advice published on childrearing, it is difficult for parents to determine which sources of child development literature are the best to follow. Sclafani helps readers to access the appropriate research-based findings. He highlights the different approaches to childrearing and provides practical advice about which approaches work best and why. His expertise, drawn from 20 years of teaching and practicing child psychology and family therapy, make him amply qualified to tackle this important subject. This volume provides parents with understandable, straightforward information to help them be more effective and positive in their interactions with their children. Sclafani covers topics that are relevant to all effective parenting. He starts by acknowledging that the process of parenting is a unique set of behaviors based upon values rooted in ethnicity, culture, and family of origin. Next, attachment, temperament, are parenting style are explained in detail, along with the subjects of family structure and discipline. An entire chapter is devoted to exploring the role of parents in their child's education process. Divorce and re-marriage effects on children and ways for parents to minimize harmful long-term effects are reviewed. The often conflicting research on day care placement and its effects are appraised and considered. Also included is information on managing stress levels within families. Finally, there is a chapter on special topics issues including adoption and chronic illness in children. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, Down-to-Earth Parenting Territory
Unlike most parenting books which present at best a mix of contradictory messages and conflicting advice, Sclafani offers a refreshing view with practical advice for the concerned, engaged adult concerned with parenting their child(ren) from infancy to adolescence. Grounded in an appropriate research literature of the educational and social sciences, Sclafani's 10 chapters negotiate the practical parenting territory by addressing many of the shortcomings of earlier volumes dealing with this topic (often successfully so). Much of the earlier discussion chapters trace the etiology of modern parenting concerns, stemming from what Sclafani calls 'good enough' parenting (an observation akin to what I call the 'outsourcing' of our more traditional parenting responsibilities), but the work continues to address these concerns with scholarly seriousness, avoiding the temptation to write a "Parenting for Dummies"-like text. Although dealing in some detail with specific, separate chapters concerned with fatherhood, motherhood, daycare and special needs children (for examples), Sclafani remains consistent throughout, in his attempt to instruct/educate parents in a considerate manner, taking pains to accommodate a diversity of attitudes, socioeconomic factors and family lifestyle choices. Indeed, this volume has to be one of the best that I have read in this regard, and the author certainly cannot be accused of pushing any particular socio-political agenda in search of proposals for action. In contrast, Sclafani's posture is firmly situated in his reading of some of the most significant (albethey selective) findings of past and present socio-developmental and educational research. Perhaps one of the finest contributions of this text is its timely reminder to the reader of the role of parents as teachers. Whereas many authors try to merely advise parents how to better interact with their child(ren)'s teachers, Sclafani revisits the ways in which parents may themselves 'take back' this role for themselves -- the results of so doing thereafter giving rise to a more sustainable, active family household (of the type most of us claim to prefer, if not only rarely enjoy on a daily basis !). We read in this book not only some very plausible explanations as to how many parents have become so relatively 'disengaged', if not actually dissatisfied, with our parenting skills, but are also guided through some thought-provoking material which can lead the reader to better plan (and hopefully implement) their interactive parenting behaviour throughout their child(ren)'s formative years through to adolescence, with care and consistency. Other special topic sections included in this book will be of interest to some, but not all, readers (e.g., those dealing with relocation, divorce or step-parenting), but each is dealt with in the same erudite, informed way. If I were to raise an issue with the author, nevertheless, I remain somewhat puzzled by the latter chapters dealing with bodily impairments, illness and bereavement. These sections were rather incomplete in my view, and left the reviewer turning to the references for more guidance -- and in this sense, the volume ends rather abruptly, and without returning to the living world of parenting as a fun and exciting adventure as discussed earlier. However, if I were asked right now to recommend only a single, comprehensive volume as a reference for parents setting out to equip and educate themselves with regards their planning for the 'better parenting' of their child(ren), this would be that book.
