Product Description
For Teachers and Parents of Children to Age 12

Finally, a book that shows you how to teach kids the eight indispensable skills-self-confidence, self-awareness, communication, problem solving, getting along, goal setting, perseverance, and empathy-they'll need for living confident, happy, and productive lives. Filled with step-by-step advice, practical ideas, and real-life examples, Parents Do Make a Difference puts field-tested tools into the hands of every parent and teacher who wants their children to succeed.

"The fact is this may well be the only book you'll ever need on raising great children."--from the Foreword by Jack Canfield, coauthor of Chicken Soup for the SoulAmazon.com Review
In 1998, a fierce debate was sparked by Judith Rich Harris'sThe Nurture Assumption:Why Children Turn Out the Way They Do: Parents Matter Less Than YouThink and Peers Matter More, a fairly scholarly book thatposited, as clearly indicated by the subhead, the radical theory thatchildren are more influenced by peers and siblings than they are bytheir parents. Parents Do Make a Difference, by Michele Borba,Ed.D., has clearly been marketed as a rebuttal. The title alone is akind of bolster to parents' sagging self-esteem.

Once you open thebook, though, it's just as clear that, marketing aside, the book wasnot actually written as part of the parents vs. peers debate, which ithas absolutely nothing to do with. Nor is it a scholarly work, in thevein of Harris's book. The original title of this book was probablysomething like "The Eight Skills of Raising Successful Children." These simple skills, which Borba (author of 36 other educationalpublications) has researched and workshopped across the country, thenimplemented in the curriculum of three elementary schools, arecommonsensical, feel-good affirmations for parents and kids. Borbauses lots of lists: the aforementioned eight skills, "four steps todeveloping positive self-beliefs," "four steps to enhancing socialcompetence," and so on. The "success tips" and affirmations are prettystraightforward, as with this suggested "pillowgram": "Slip a messageunder your child's pillow. 'Kevin, I loved looking at your drawingstoday. You are so artistic! Sleep tight! Love, Dad.'" These are fine, basic self-esteem builders; unfortunately, they can sometimes veer toomuch on the cloying side. But for parents who want to help theirchildren develop the eight skills (self-confidence, communication, getting along, perseverance, self-awareness, problem solving, goalsetting, and caring), it should be of significant help. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars parents do make a difference
a book for anyone with children, as children do not come with a manual on what to do. I am a grandmother and use the positive messages of this book for my grandchildren with great results.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Important Parenting Book
I consider myself to be a well educated, caring person with a lot of common sense, however this book has been a real eye opener on human nature and how to nurture our children to grow to their greatest potential.I'm only on page 50 but I feel compelled to write a review already!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent 'how to' guide for parents or anyone who cares for children
This is easy to read, well laid out and is packed with useful tips on how to help kids be their best selves. It's a real 'how to' guide, with lots of examples of actual situations & what to say to help your child overcome specific difficulties & be more successful. I like it so much I've ordered another copy to share with friends (gently & tactfully, of course!) Every parent should read this book - it's not about pushing your kids to achieve & driving them to prove what a great parent you are - this book is about nurturing their strengths & helping them believe in themselves & be more confident in who they are, just so they can be happy & enjoy life more.

Definitely worth the money & time spent reading it & putting it into practice. Does what it says on the cover!

Product Description
Your child may be a sensitive dreamer if: he forgets to follow instructions, no matter how clear and simple, she craves praise and positive attention, yet refuses to conform to what's expected, he tells more than his share of fibs and tall tales. If you recognize these actions in your child, you know the frustration of turning to parenting experts for advice only to find the systems don't work, the rules don't stick and strong boundary setting makes the situation worse. The creative-sensitive dreamer is not the strong-willed child. Get this book and learn how to parent your special needs child who is principle -oriented rather than rule-oriented, highly creative, overly sensitive and frustrated at a world that fails to live up to the ideal. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Thankful but puzzled
This book was really helpful. The dreamer profile fits my son to a T, but I'm puzzled as to why the authors have chosen to sprinkle a few too many christian religious references throughout the book. I am spiritual, but not religious, and noticed, after the first 4-5 biblical references, that the authors had a definite christian angle, which I think tainted the otherwise well-written and persuasive prose which, presumably, is supposed to help everyone (not just christians). If you think your child is a dreamer, I wouldn't hesitate to get this book. If you're a christian who loves biblical quotes and stories, so much the better.

3-0 out of 5 stars Grows out of James Dobson's approach to strong-willed children
Children can be exasperating.Their sudden fixations, mood shifts, overreactions, and tantrums can drive a parent batsos, embarrass the family, and lead to angry confrontations. Most kids grow through stages of this kind of behavior, but for some kids, it's their natural style.James Dobson has written books on parenting strong-willed children, and his observations set the stage for this book.

Parents can be exasperating. They lead their kids into uncomfortable or unfamiliar situations, change their minds unexpectedly, and sometimes criticize for no reason. From a kid's perspective, that only makes things worse. When an already freaked-out child has to deal with a parent who, in embarrassment or anger, is making further demands on the child, that child is going to act out.

"Strong-Willed Child or Dreamer" addresses the scale of Dobson's "doer" behavior (cautious-compliant to strong-willed) and adds a third quality... "dreamers."Dreamers are creative and sensitive and are often (OFTEN) misunderstood. They are called difficult, or even impossible. They have their own ideas and they are STUBBORN.

This book is geared toward moody and defiant dreamers, those kids who might be tagged as ADHD.

There is quite a bit of descriptive information and chapters for parents.Helpful book for relating with a person (not only a child!) who throws up barriers in your relationships or seems willfully to misunderstand you.

5-0 out of 5 stars FOR THE CHILD YOU CAN NEVER SEEM TO DO THE RIGHT THING
This book is GREAT. I have probably bought 25 or more copies over the years for friends, teachers, psychologists, youth pastors, childrens pastors, whomever. When I first read the book, I recognized myself, two of my children and three of my grandchildren. apparently the dreamer runs strong in my family. One of the best parts of this book is the check list after the frist 30 some pages. This list tells you if this book will work for your child. Get it at the library and read those 30 - 35 pages and do the check list. If it describes your child, buy the book.
There ARE three typs of kids, compliant, strong-willed and the DREAMER. Check this book out and you may find yourself in the pages and some answers to the "why don't I react like normal people" questions that have been there all of your life. GREAT book !

5-0 out of 5 stars Crack the Code with your child
If James Dobson's excellent book, The Strong Willed Child, just didn't seem to hit the nail on the head about your child, then this is the book for you!It has dramatically changed my understanding of our second child.Dreamers are wonderful people who accomplish much in this world but if you, as a parent, aren't one, this book will help you grasp their take on life and appreciate everything about your dreamer. You'll also learn how to help your dreamer thrive in the world around them, which is full of non-dreamers.I highly recommend this book.It changed my life! This is the fourth copy I have purchased because I have given it away to many people since first reading it three years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars loved this book
I bought this book after hearing about it from a friend and wondering whether my 4 year old daughter might be a dreamer. She absolutely is. I have never highlighted so much in any book before. There were so many parts I read that I thought, "Yes! That is exactly what she would do!" I had read Dr. Dobson's Strong Willed Child and it didn't fit, except for the stubbornness. This book was such a relief to me to know that she is not the only child out there who is like this. I understand her so much better and understand how my attempts to discipline her like a strong willed child were only making things worse. I highly recommend this book! ... Read more

Explaining the nature of theories in the field of child development (including why theories are useful and why there are multiple theories), Thomas' highly respected book covers the widest range of theories of any text currently available. Using the following criteria: "Has the theory been popular?," "Has the theory been influential?," and "Is the theory representative of a class or family of theories?," Thomas identifies the goals and describes the findings of more than two dozen theorists and inspects a series of child development issues that bridge a variety of theories. Additionally, Thomas suggests a variety of ways to compare theories and existing explanations of how a child develops. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Inner Child Is Now Running Amok and No Parents Can Stop me!
As a person who sucks I found the idea that the "real me" was someplace else inside of me but had to be brought forth by "healing".I grew weary of my tedious life with a single hobby of tracking and terminating adult acne in front of a mirror and recording the results in a diary. Then one day at a garage sale this book seemed to jump out at me like a burst pimple.

Now after reading and following this book I am indeed healed and creative and my "real self" has emerged.I now have power, self esteem, and walls filled withcrudely crayoned breasts. No parents are around to ground me this time or have an "important talk".

The one downside came when I kidnapped the Jenkin's girls dolls after a late night playhouse break in.The police thought my new-found "liberation" a bit unsettling but all thanks to the miracle of "bail" I am still not grounded.

I received this book which was in okay condition and I began reading the book I noticed that there are missing pages and I have not been able to locate this book just yet.... Buyer beware!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Healing the Child Within
I cannot rave enough about this book.I thought I would be able to just skim through the book, but it is a lot deeper and informative than I ever imagined. It is an easy read and very paractical. The information is applicable, so it may be best to take each chapter in and not rush through.I think this way you will be able to retain the informaiton. It has really given me a lot of insight about myself, my family of origin, and some answers to why or how people behave in ways that they do.Even if your belief systemdoes not parallel with that of this book, you will still come out with a lot of knowledge about yourself and others. This book is also informative for those who have NOT came from Alcoholic or Drug Abused/Troubled homes. It really is applicable for ANY and EVERY one.

I think this book is terrific for those who are trying to learn about themselves, heal from broken relationships or trying to grow stronger relationships, and VERY IMPORTANTLY,if they will one day be a parent themselves.A great gift you can give your child is to heal and help yourself so you can truly be a parent for your child(ren). This will help for dysfunction NOT to continue!!!Awesome!Awesome!Awesome!

Next I want to oder "A Gift To Myself" which is the workbook by Charles L. Whitfield (the same author).

2-0 out of 5 stars I've read better
The book has a good idea behind it. And it makes some good points. But I found it much more difficult to read that many other books of this type. Not "hard" difficult or anything like that.Difficult in the sense that the book just never caught my attention the way that other self help books have and I really had to force myself to keep reading.I don't think I got as much out of it as I could have simply because I had such a hard time paying attention.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will help you feel
If you suffer from past trauma of abuse as a child, this book will help you feel things you may have not been able to feel before. Best to work with therapist or caring friend or partner. This book is 'gentle' enough to comfort you somewhat when doing the work but you will more than likely have feelings rush in waves inside you that may be more than you can control. ... Read more

In this book, Barbara Rogoff puts into practice the theoretical account she presented in her highly acclaimed book Apprenticeship in Thinking. Here, Rogoff collaborates with two master teachers from an innovative school in Salt Lake City, Utah, where she conducted extensive research into what is involved when people learn--students, parents, and teachers alike. Illustrated with observations by participants in this school, this book shows that children and adults learn by participating within a community of learners. Their experiences will speak to all those interested in school improvement and in how people learn through engaging together in activities of mutual interest. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So Helpful to My 6 year old
My 6 year old son says that he feels better after we read the stories in this book. They are stories of animals who have divorced in various different scenarios, relating to high conflict, low conflict, and many other types of divorce. I am so glad that I got it. It was recommended by the Kids' Turn website.Kids' Turn is an organization that provides education to families going through divorce. They are very well respected.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ideal reading when working with children
I have brought this book by JR Johnston for the purpose of providing group counselling/parenting to parents who are having difficulty focusing on the needs of their children at times of emotional crisis and/or trauma in their lived such as separation or divorce. I have given the book five stars because I believe it is excellent in understanding children and their behaviour.

1-0 out of 5 stars This author should be avoided
After extensive research in the area of trauma and domestic violence, including personal experience, I've come to realize that while Johnston puts on a good "understanding" front, she clearly has no clue about what really goes on behind closed doors and consistently assigns blame to the the victims instead of the abusers. As a result, much of her work and "typing" of such situations has done VAST damage to victims. I would recommend ... STRONGLY ... that everyone read books by Lundy Bancroft before purchasing any of Johnston's work. His work is the first, and only, to date, that I've read that truly, honestly depicts the true nature of abuse and the effects it has on children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended to all our clients with children
I'm a full time family law mediator ... and my mediation partner is a marriage and family therapist who specializes in parenting plans for divorcing couples. We recommend this book to all of our clients with age-appropriate children. We particularly like the sand turtle story--it's touching, sweet, simple, and it gets the point across, i.e., the sand turtle and the sea turtle can't live together but they're both loving parents to their baby turtle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Each story in this book deals with an "animal child" who has a problem dealing with some aspect of his parent's divorce and, with the help of some caring adult, reaches a solution for coping.

The stories areunsophisticated and the morals are "too obvious," and the bookobviously is written for young children. So I expected mine - ages 9 and 8- to be bored silly. To my surprise, they can't get enough of this book!

They apparently the directness and the clear relevance to their owndilemmas.

Based on this unexpected response of my own kids, I highlyrecommend it for any children of divorce from pre-school AT LEAST throughthe age of nine! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Creative Interventions for Children of Divorce
This is the first book I have seen that contains truly creative and engaging therapeutic activities to use with children dealing with divorce. The activities can be used with children in many settings. There is a curriculum that can be used in therapy or support groups, and a chapter of activities to use in family therapy. In addition, there is a handout for parents to provide them with tips on how to support their children through the separation/divorce process. The theoretical overview covers important topics such as the impact of divorce on children at different ages and stages, and how to work with cases involving Parental Alienation. This book is among the best I have seen on this topic, and it will be an invaluable resource for therapists, counselors, support group facilitators, etc. Other books on this topic I recommend:

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great resource for practitioners!
I have been using Ms. Lowenstein's books for many years in my work with children and adolescents. These books are always within in reach when I work with children as I feel they are quite instrumental in my work. What I like about them is that they focused on issues--divorce, grief, loss, bereavement, troubled youth-- that most books don't discuss as clearly. In my work with various populations I found Ms. Lowenstein's activities to be readily adaptable to every situation.

The activities are creative and allow the child or adolescent to focus on what activity they are completing while not realizing that they are doing a therapeutic activity. It is a great addition to talk therapy aiding a youth who has difficulty verbalizing their feelings.Children often lose their voice when they experience difficult situations and these activities aid in restoring it for them. The activities are easy to implement and don't require a great deal of prep time. However, the clinician should be prepared prior to implementing each activity.

Every social worker, clinically trained counselor, psychologist and play therapist should have her books as a part of their therapeutic library. I feel they are the most practical resource for professionals who are working with children with the issues that these books address--bereavement, divorce and trauma.

Make sure your shelves include: Creative Interventions for Bereaved Children, CI for Children of Divorce, CI for Troubled Youth and the other books written by Ms. Lowenstein.

5-0 out of 5 stars An incredible practical & creative resource when working with children and divorce
This is the most creative, practical resource for professionals on the topic of children and divorce. It is packed with creative assessment and treatment techniques to use with children dealing with divorce. I have used the activities with clients in individual sessions as well as with the children in a support group. There is a theoretical overview that contains some very useful information. The author grants permission to copy the activities for use with clients. There is also a "Tips Sheet" that you can copy to give to parents. This book should be on the bookshelf of any helping professional working with this population.

I highly recommend Liana Lowenstein's other books that I have listed below:

Product Description

A revolution in working with difficult students began during the 1980s, with a dramatic shift away from dependence on simply punishing bad behavior to reinforcing desired, positive behaviors of children in the classroom. With its foundation in applied behavior analysis (ABA), positive behavior support (PBS) is a social ecology approach that continues to play an increasingly integral role in public education as well as mental health and social services nationwide.

The Handbook of Positive Behavior Support gathers into one concise volume the many elements of this burgeoning field and organizes them into a powerful, dynamic knowledge base – theory, research, and applications. Within its chapters, leading experts, including the primary developers and researchers of PBS: (1) Review the origins, history, and ethical foundations of positive behavior support. (2) Report on applications of PBS in early childhood and family contexts, from Head Start to foster care to mental health settings to autism treatment programs. (3) Examine school-based PBS used to benefit all students regardless of ability or conduct. (4) Relate schoolwide PBS to wraparound mental health services and the RTI (response to intervention) movement. (5) Provide data and discussion on a variety of topics salient to PBS, including parenting issues, personnel training, high school use, poorly functioning schools, and more.

This volume is an essential resource for school-based practitioners as well as clinicians and researchers in clinical child, school, and educational psychology.

Product Description
Overcoming Loss is a photocopiable resource that addresses childrens' feeling of loss, which can arise from changing communities, schools, moving house, divorce or the death of a parent or grandparent. Children are limited to a vocabulary of broad emotions like 'happy', 'sad' and 'angry', and are often unable to articulate their grief in words. This can impair their long-term emotional development.

The activities in Overcoming Loss use the power of play and creative arts to give the grieving child the language to identify subtle feelings, such as shame, despair and jealousy. Designed to encourage social and emotional learning, these exercises employ play, art and story-telling to access the ways in which children naturally express their feelings, and offers opportunities for parents and professionals to direct the child towards understanding their emotions.

Parents, teachers, counselors and anyone working with children between the ages of 4 and 8 who are dealing with a loss will find this resource a practical and effective tool. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hardest emotion to identify in children.
Grief is one of the hardest emotions to identify in children of divorce. Grief is so quiet and divorce is so loud. The swirl of passion and pain expressed by the adults smothers the heartache felt by their children. This book was written for clinicians but can be a critical tool for parents to help their children deal, heal and move on after the death of a marriage. 5-0 out of 5 stars PAUL KAPLAN: A CHILD'S ODYSSEY, THIRD EDITION (2001)
I teach child psychology at a college, and have used the Kaplan book as the required textbook since 2001. I have stayed longer with this book than the usual 4-5 years, because I wrote the 550 page Test Bank that is given to professors who adopt the book. This Third Edition remains as the most recent version, because author Paul Kaplan (State University of New York, Stony Brook) retired in 2008. The book has a Study Guide, which is NOT recommended. The study guide is brief and is badly prepared. The study guide author also wrote the study guide for the previous (second) edition, and most multiple-choice items were rolled forward into the third edition without checking in advance whether the narrative coverage in the revised textbook remained the same. There are several items in the study guide for which the answers cannot be found in the textbook, because of changed coverage. This is an unforgivable error. The book follows a chronological arrangement, with a few opening general chapters, followed by groupings of 2-3 chapters arranged by age level. There are three chapters on infancy, two on preschoolers, two on grade schoolers, and two on teenagers.Very extensive coverage is give to the topic of infant attachment, a topic on which the author did original research. Used copies of this book are selling for inflated high prices, considering the book's advanced age. (I give a few free copies of textbooks, purchased on Amazon, to students who earn top grades on tests, or to those who are present on the first day of the semester.) I am now planning to switch to a more recently dated textbook because of pressure from my campus's curriculum committee, but I remain happy with Paul Kaplan's writing and coverage.
