1-0 out of 5 stars Not a very thorough review
I bought this book over some of the other civil review books because it looked longer and all of the other books had complaints about them. However, now I wish I had ignored those complaints and bought one of the others, because it would be hard for them to be any worse than this book.I would not recommend this as a good review. All of the review topics are VERY brief, most consisting of only a paragraph, if there is any review at all.It is basically a book of sample problems.Granted, the sample problems and explanations definitely help, but the problems all seemed rather simple and I'm worried that the exam questions may be more difficult. Also, there are topics on the civil EIT that are not covered at ALL in this book. The three major topics that are not covered are surveying, computers/numerical methods, and contracts/construction.All of these topics have 6 problems on the exam, just as much as geotech, hydraulics, or transportation!Water treatment was also not covered, unless you consider the environmental engineering chapter to cover it.I don't understand how they could publish an "effective review" book without covering 4 out of the 10 topics on the exam. The only redeeming quality to this review text is that it gives you a sample civil examination, but overall you'll be better off with Lindeburg's book.

THIS IS IN ADDITION TO MY PREVIOUS REVIEW GIVEN ABOVE:
I am now writing after actually having TAKEN the EIT exam.My thoughts on this book are even worse than before. My new MAJOR complaint is that the example problems in this review book are MUCH, MUCH EASIER than the actual problems on the EIT exam.I did pretty well on the sample exam in this book, because the problems were all really basic, but the actual exam question were all a level or two HARDER.You'd think a good test prep book would be the other way around.DON'T BUY THIS BOOK. ... The lingo of civil engineering and construction is a language unto itself, and L.F. Webster does a fine job of translating it for the lay person and defining the terms accurately for those who need to know them: professionals working in surveying, construction, forestry, mining, and public works. The 666 pages and more than 30,000 definitions of terms, concepts, names, abbreviations, tools, and techniques makes Wiley an indispensable reference for contractors, civil engineers, architects, consultants, and students.Book Description
The Wiley Dictionary of Civil Engineering and Construction provides comprehensive coverage of a broad range of technical disciplines. The definitions are designed to be of use to professionals in architecture, engineering, surveying, building, construction, forestry, mining, and public works. Entries include terms, concepts, names, abbreviations, tools, and techniques common to these disciplines, and virtually all terms and their functions were supplied by working professionals and experts in each field.

More than 30,000 definitions and descriptions, including many that are not covered in other dictionaries

  • Written with the support and assistance of nearly 100 manufacturers, trade associations, government agencies, and specialists
  • All terms arranged alphabetically; many grouped according to logical common topics; thoroughly cross-referenced
  • All weights, volumes, and spatial dimensions presented in both metric and nonmetric values (conversion factors included).

The Wiley Dictionary of Civil Engineering and Construction is an indispensable resource for civil engineers, contractors and subcontractors, architects, construction administrators, consultants, and students. It also offers assistance to professionals without technical training who need to become familiar with this terminology, including bankers, attorneys, insurers, regulators, and inspectors. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but could be better.
I would have to say that the Canadian gentleman who blasted this book is a bit harsh. The buyer should take note that this book is a DICTIONARY, not an encyclopedia. The definitions are of the quality you would expect from Wiley, they are concise yet informative enough to get the general meaning of what the term being defined is. My biggest gripe is that I bought this book to take the Civil PE exam, and each time I opened it during the exam, the term I was looking for was not listed in the book, rendering it useless.I was disappointed with the book because of this, and would have to say it is not comprehensive enough if you're using it for the PE exam.(I'd have to say that more "technical" terms are not included, only general concepts in design and construction.)Bottom line: a good supplement to an engineering library for information outside of your field of practice, but not a definitive, comprehensive text.

4-0 out of 5 stars Must have for student or beginning engineer
I have only had the book for a few weeks, and have found myself referencing it often.I believe that, as an engineer, you will be seeing and hearing new things throughout your career, and reference manuals are excellent tools, and this is a must have for any beginning engineer/construction manager, and/or student.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth the Money!
It came as a great disappointment to leaf through this particular book and discover its content was less than adequate for the price. The definitions were incomplete and lacked any technical elaboration. Mr. Webster conveniently explains this in the preface as "purposely brief". There's even a word misspelled; Enathalpy. It's "enthalpy", sir!I had genuinely believed that I was purchasing a superior work since it was published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Instead, I receive in the mail this amateur attempt that is definitely NOT worth the price I paid. I get greater detail and clarity from my old 1980 copy of the Penguin Dictionary of Civil Engineering by John S. Scott, and I paid only seven dollars for it! This experience forces me to reconsider purchasing publications from John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Clearly, they'll let any ol' thing through. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Practice Problems
The problems in this book are all qualitative. The solutions in this book show possible errors that can occur when solving the problems in addition to the correct solution.Below the problem is a "hint" to help you get started in the right direction.I didn't use the "hints" and didn't find them to be effective for my learning style. The problems are more in-depth than those found on the test but the idea behind this material is to introduce the student to the concepts found on the exam and improve your solving capabilities in a limited amount of time. The book doesn't teach you how to solve a problem in 6-minutes, which is what the title leads to believe.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great workbook...
A great workbook to help along with the P.E. exam; however, it is a brief review, and you'll probably need other books to complete your review, especially if tranportation is your cup of tea for the afternoon session.

The book is probably enough to cover the morning breadth session - but for the afternoon, I'd look into additional review books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Study Guide

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Recommended if you are looking for real help
Feels like a slapped together attempt to make some money. No survey review. Most of the reviews are very confusing. The hydrology review is just a couple questions with manning's and Hazen equations. The review questions don't have real explained solutions.Don't waste time with this book, find something else.

1-0 out of 5 stars Quite useless
It discusses indetail obvious stuff, and then references you to textbooks for more advanced topics. So it is more of a basic reference for the things you practice everyday, than a way to help you remember the topics you did during your undergrad degree

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay
This book is okay. It's not very in-depth.I would pay the extra money and get a more thorough study guide.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
Talk about a big disappointment.I was expecting a book that would really help me prepare for the civil discipline specific portion of the EIT exam. Unfortunately this book only skims the top of major topics and does not go into any sort of detail whatsoever. It's not a complete book, i think it miss more than 50% of the course. My suggestion would be to leave this book alone and study from reference text books.

1-0 out of 5 stars Did someone forget to proofread?
I got this book last week and I've only worked through the second chapter but I've already found 4 mistakes.Grammatical mistakes I can handle but what I've come across are technical mistakes, units - poorly photocopied diagrams, mislabeled examples, that I cannot handle. If you're the publisher or one of the contributors reading this review you should be ashamed of yourself.Save your money, stick to Michael R. Lindeburg. ... Read more

Reinforced Concrete: Mechanics and Design (4th Edition) (Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics)

I think this book is very good quality, and shipping is not bad...

5-0 out of 5 stars Reinforced Concrete : Mechanics and Design (4th Edition)
This book is the best for those who want a deeper understanding of reinforced concrete design.Since the author presents a step by step way to introduce the concepts, the reader is able to get a more detailed information and retents more concepts instead of procedures

5-0 out of 5 stars Great as usual
I have the 2nd edition of this book which I loved. This edition is excellent and is easily the best text on Reinforced Concrete there is anywhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even Better with New Co-Author
This book was already one of the best concrete design texts and is even better with the addition of the new co-author James Wight, who adds valuable information on the design of concrete structures to resist seismic forces. There are a few minor errors in the examples that still exist from the 3rd edition, but they are minor and the examples are detailed enough that the corrections are usually forthcoming. I recently finished a MS in Structural Engineering focusing on concrete design and this book (3rd edition) was one of the 2 or 3 that I found myself referring to most often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reinforced Concrete by MacGregor
This is unquestionably the authority in reinforced concrete design. It is an excellent reference manual for teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Every structural engineer should have a copy of this reference. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent Review Text
Having recently taken the PE, I found this to be quite a useful reference for the principles of surveying (together with the surveying textbook by Kavanagh). The major topics are covered in this text, and as long as the test taker using other reference materials to go more in depth, there should be no problem. However, I could have been lucky this time around and your mileage may vary (most of my colleagues have had problems with the surveying portion of the PE).

Word of warning for future PE exam takers:NCEES and the state board do not allow loose or stapled sheets during the exam, and during the October 2007 exam, this book (and other similar reference materials) was disallowed as it is stapled.People who had inserted it into 3-ring binders didn't have a problem.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Deficient
This book and the accompanying "120 Solved Surveying Problems" and "Civil Surveying Sample Exams," did not cover all topics on the CA survey exam, and did not even cross reference each other well.It was poorly written, very poorly organized, and this book and practice problems and sample exams were all were full of mathematical errors.

About the only good thing about the book was its chapters on angle measurements and traverses.Though it didn't explain how to set up the computations, you could figure it out from the figures. The one main deficiency in the traverse chapter what that it corrected a traverse in an example problem without saying how, then explained in detail in a following sections how to do it.A little backwards.

This book needs serious clarification of the photogrammetry and public lands system chapters, and should include information on vertical datums, earth curvature, refraction and other tape corrections, and survey equipment. The California Coordinate chapter was very unclear, you can download better information off the CalTrans website, along with standard survey staking guidelines.I was never sure of the purpose of the astronomical observations chapter.

I felt like I was able to pass the exam, but it was more from my work experience than these books. The sample exams did reflect the test, but the number of errors in the answers were astounding.I recommend getting a basic survey book, and using Lindburg's Civil Engineer's Reference Manual for horizontal and vertical geometries, as well as the other survey and earthwork information it contains.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gets the job done
I felt obliged to write a review on this book due to the many negative reviews I read.I almost didn't buy the book because of them.I thought this book did a good job of covering all of the basic principles covered on the California Special Civil Engineering Exam.I did find some mistakes, and I would recommend using an additional "real" surveying book that has a good index, but it did get right to the point on the topics it covered. The problem with my "real" surveying book is there is just too much material to cover. If you are a real surveyor, I imagine this book would be completely worthless. However, to those of us who just need a general understanding of surveying to pass the test, I would recommend this book.It worked for me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but not enough
This is a REVIEW book; it does not cover all the topics in enough depth to educate someone who is not familiar with surveying.I agree with most of the other reviewers that state it will not adequately prepare you for the exam.I was most disappointed with the overall quality of the book.I found numerous minor errors and a few things that are just plain wrong.Likewise the companion "Practice Exam" is a joke. The questions are too easy and too many are focused on definitions and regulations, not calculations and problem solving. That said there isn't anything else currently on the market for a similar price. So if you want to save the money of a review course and try studying on your own, go for it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I have been using this book to study for the CA Civil Engineering PE Survey exam.I have discovered it to be helpful.I felt as though the example problems clearly show one how to work each the problem step-by-step. In my 'two cent' opinion--I think it is well worth the money and helpful. ... Read more

Book Description
Apply the principles of probability and statistics to realistic engineering problems

The easiest and most effective way to learn the principles of probabilistic modeling and statistical inference is to apply those principles to a variety of applications. That's why Ang and Tang's Second Edition of Probability Concepts in Engineering (previously titled Probability Concepts in Engineering Planning and Design) explains concepts and methods using a wide range of problems related to engineering and the physical sciences, particularly civil and environmental engineering.

Now extensively revised with new illustrative problems and new and expanded topics, this Second Edition will help you develop a thorough understanding of probability and statistics and the ability to formulate and solve real-world problems in engineering. The authors present each basic principle using different examples, and give you the opportunity to enhance your understanding with practice problems. The text is ideally suited for students, as well as those wishing to learn and apply the principles and tools of statistics and probability through self-study.

Key Features in this 2nd Edition:
* A new chapter (Chapter 5) covers Computer-Based Numerical and Simulation Methods in Probability, to extend and expand the analytical methods to more complex engineering problems.
* New and expanded coverage includes distribution of extreme values (Chapter 3), the Anderson-Darling method for goodness-of-fit test (Chapter 6), hypothesis testing (Chapter 6), the determination of confidence intervals in linear regression (Chapter 8), and Bayesian regression and correlation analyses (Chapter 9).
* Many new exercise problems in each chapter help you develop a working knowledge of concepts and methods.
* Provides a wide variety of examples, including many new to this edition, to help you learn and understand specific concepts.
* Illustrates the formulation and solution of engineering-type probabilistic problems through computer-based methods, including developing computer codes using commercial software such as MATLAB and MATHCAD.
* Introduces and develops analytical probabilistic models and shows how to formulate engineering problems under uncertainty, and provides the fundamentals for quantitative risk assessment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable Reference
An indispensable reference book, it provides a great balance of theory, worked examples, and exercises that thoroughly explain basic concepts of probability and risk as encountered in Civil and Environmental Engineering. The first edition has been within arm's reach on my book shelf for 30 years. I wish all my engineering texts were so well written.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Textbook, Limited Value Otherwise
This is a good textbook for teaching, and not as good of a source for research for real world application reference material, which is what I try to maintain a library to utilize.Very basic material coverage, good for students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable books for safety and reliability engineers
Alhough Ang and Tang's Volumes I and II are already over 20 years old, I consider these books as one of the best on probabilistic design methods in civil engineering. The books cover topics such as 'statistical decision analysis (including CBA, MCA, MCDM)', 'queueing models', 'extreme value theory', 'Monte Carlo simulation', 'failure probability calculation' and 'system reliability techniques'. A huge amount of examples are embedded in the theory. They are ideal to be used as examination questions (which the reviewer succesfully does for his courses on 'Probabilistic Design' and 'Probabilistic Design in Hydraulic Engineering' at TU Delft, The Netherlands).

Civil engineers with an interest in design of maritime -, hydraulic - and coastal structures will miss the probabilistic description of sea waves and current loads. The second edition (2000) ofGoda may fill this gap (available at Amazon under 981023256X). Engineers interested in probabilistic description of structural dynamics are referred to the second edition (2004) of YK Lin and GQ Cai (available at Amazon under 0071438009). The connection of probability theory with finite element models (one of the reviewer's main fields of interest) is not covered by the above mentioned books. Something for Volume III...?

5-0 out of 5 stars Still the best book
I have used this book and Vol 2 in my graduate and undergraduate courses. Having used a variety of texts for teaching and learning about probability and statistics in an engineering context, I would say the two volumes byAng and Tang have no rivals. Lots and lots of good engineering typeproblems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text for beginning engineering probability study.
We used this text as the first half of a graduate course in engineering reliability. It presented the concepts clearly and in terms of engineering problems rather than card picking and coin flipping like many otherprobability and statistics texts. It also provided a thorough treatment ofthe mathematical basis of the sciences of probability and statistics.

The second volume is also an excellent text, though I have had troublelocating it recently. It treats the issues of reliability and decisionanalysis in more detail. ... Read more
