Book Description
Current and complete coverage of soil characteristics from a construction point of view.

A must have reference for any engineer involved with foundations, piers, and retaining walls, this remarkably comprehensive volume illustrates soil characteristic concepts with examples that detail a wealth of practical considerations, It covers the latest developments in the design of drilled pier foundations and mechanically stabilized earth retaining wall and explores a pioneering approach for predicting the nonlinear behavior of laterally loaded long vertical and batter piles.

As complete and authoritative as any volume on the subject, it discusses soil formation, index properties, and classification; soil permeability, seepage, and the effect of water on stress conditions; stresses due to surface loads; soil compressibility and consolidation; and shear strength characteristics of soils.

While this book is a valuable teaching text for advanced students, it is one that the practicing engineer will continually be taking off the shelf long after school lets out. Just the quick reference it affords to a huge range of tests and the appendices filled with essential data, makes it an essential addition to an civil engineering library. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great as review, short on exercises.
The biggest part to passing the P.E. exam is practicing as many exercises as possible when preparing for it. This book definitely helps by providing plenty of texts and shorter examples.

However, it provides few diagrams to illustrate the technical terms introduced in the texts, and many of the chapters do not offer review problems to reinforce the concepts that were covered.

I'd recommend it for those who may not have taken transportation engineering in their college course work and need the background to get by in the morning session of the exam.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good General overview, but not that helpful in the PE
This is really not a review book but more of an overview of what transportation engineering. It easy to understand but the text is not backed up with challenging chapter problems that you would see on the PE exam as indicated by the NCEES(except maybe for the Geometrics / Horizontal curve part). You may get a couple of helpul information about bike, pedestrian, railway and airport facilities... but this really is not that helpful. A good portion of the Appendix (part B) is dedicated to Airport facilites and taxiways. What I also did not like about this book is the publishing quality, you would expect a quality product from McGraw hill, but its seems like a lot of sample problems and appendixes came from old mimeograph and carbon copy machines. Lasty the tables on this book are poorly referenced to (AASTHO, HCM, MUTCD) For example their are table reffering to passenger car equivalents and maximum pcplph are not properly referenced to HCM unlike other transportation engineering books. I'm very disappointed with this McGraw Hill book.

1-0 out of 5 stars worthless
Don't bother spending money on this reference. It will be of little value preparing for the PE exam. Too much information on airports that will nevber be on the PE exam.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good study aid
This book was of little value in preparing for the PE exam. It has very general information, lots of full page diagrams and charts and half of the book is appendixes. There are very few questions and the answers are not well explained. It is a narrative about the subject matter not a review of how to work engineering problems not to mention everything was in SI units only. I was very disappointed with this book and do not recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive structural engineering book on the market
The Handbook of Structural Engineering is a comprehensive reference source on the fundamentals of, and special topics in, structural engineering. The book is intended for practicing engineers, and the introduction notes that the ideal reader will be an "M.S.-level engineer." Consequently, treatment of subjects is highly technical and emphasizes mathematical explanations to an extent that it might be of limited use to novices.

The first section provides a detailed overview of the fundamentals of structural engineering. Following this introductory section are eight chapters covering special types of structures, and thirteen chapters on special topics in structural engineering. All chapters contain a brief glossary of key concepts discussed within the chapter, an extensive bibliography, suggested readings, and a list of relevant codes and standards where applicable. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Civil Engineering PE Exam Guide - Breadth and Depth
Paid over $90 for this book at Borders and was extremely dissapointed. The CD is an exact replica of what is in the book - Many equation errors and typos, no "practice test" questions as stated on the cover. The editors of this book are certianly not PEs and could never pass the test with this!

I just bought it. I opened up on page 101 to find the Dr(%) formula (5.10) being wrong. This does not give me a warm feeling. I probably will be further disappointed with this book. I'll tell you more about it later.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
My hope was to find a book with example problems that reflect the new PE exam format. This book has no end of chapter problems at all.And from what I read there was no difference in the depth and breadth sections.I did a side-by-side comparison of the environmental stuff and it was word for word.As far as I can tell the only thing the depth section (which is on CD) gives you is a bunch of charts you'll never use.

As far as text books go, this one is not bad. It's decently well written and put together. There are a lot of graphs and diagrams to explain the material. There are not as many example problems as there need to be, but the questions at the end of the chapter are very straightforward. Not a very extensive reference section either.

This is a solid thermo textbook. Goes over concepts and theories fairly well. There are plenty of worked out examples throughout the chapters and appendixes so you know what you're doing. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Step-By-Step Calculations for the Mundane
This is a necessary text for all engineers. Such textbooks are highly useful in establishing standards for mundane calculations performed in many branches of engineering. I just recently replaced my first edition of this book with the newest so that I would have access to the new enviromental engineer calculations added.

The book is now divided into civil, mechanical, architectural, and chemical engineering. If you can't find what you need, the safest bet is to check out the mechanical section next. In my opinion, the mechanical section is far too large and it is time to abandon the division of this book by degrees. I would divide it up by task; this would require simplifying the table of contents and an expansion of the index but then who really uses a TOC with a handbook?

Why do I use the word mundane? You won't find complicated calculation procedures here, nor will you find a lot of selection criteria information. What I mean is a table ranking technology. A good example of this is the series of books by Coulson and Richardson on chemical engineering. In that series, under drying, for example, all the technology is ranked according to product dryness, particle sizes, etc.. None of this is presented here. What makes this book useful is that is presents a procedure understandable to junior engineers and clients for solving a particular problem such as calculating a slab thickness or the size of a ventilation duct.

This book is a must-have if you are a consultant, contractor, or just want an understanding of a basic engineering calculation.

If this review was helpful, please add your vote.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Tool for any Student or Practitioner of any field of Engineering

An essential reference and work tool for any engineer, student or technician, this handbook contains more than 5000 calculation procedures that will show, anybody and anyone working with engineering applications, quick and easy calculations formulas and procedures to solve most engineering problems encountered in the industries and in class.

Using a "cookbook" format, this book presents detailed "recipes" that describe the problem to be solved; step-by-step procedures to be followed; a worked out example of the typical problem; and (in most cases) presents cross-referenced related calculations.

Truly a most have. I am an Electronics Engineer, but I work as an Instrumentation, Automation and Process Safety and Control Engineer for the Process Industries. As a result I have been involved with Chemical and Mechanical Engineering issues in a day to day basic. This handy reference has proven most useful and time saving when in need of an specific formula, or shortcut.

To: Lost in Air

I respectfully submit, that you need to appreciate Mr. Hicks' position. He has provided a conservative approach that will work in almost every situation. The empirical approach that you advocate may well work in most situations but I'll bet there is little margin built in forcontingencies.True, your solution may cost less, which is important.Butwill the low-margin, low cost solution still work 1 or 2 years from now orwill the pipe size be too small to allow for degradation/changes?Customerrepeat business must be a consideration, too.

I'm not trying to beconfrontational, and I understand what you're saying. But you have toappreciate the position that Mr. Hicks must take in such a handbook, and hetakes the only logical one, which is to be on the conservative side. People doing more than a couple of these calculations in a year in factshould consult more in-depth material, as you did.

David R.Debo, P.E.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Hicks' approach to sizing pipe for compressed air
Mr. Hicks has done a wonderful job in compling equations, however, he has missed the practical applications in compressed air and vacuum systems.I initially used his theoritcal position on calculating pressure drop in pipe for compressed air.His position seems reasonable and logical until you compare the results with practical applications.Ingresoll-Rand, the air compressor manufacturer, published tables of pressure drop verses pipe sizes, delivery pressures and ACFM.Futher ASPE has published a data book which leads the engineer into an empirical equation for calculating pressure loss in compressed air piping. The results with both Ingresoll-Rand and ASPE agree.Using Mr. Hicks' therotical approach drives the pipe size much larger than needed and therefore the cost of the project. My suggestion is that Mr. Hicks contact I-R and ASPE to incorporate their empirical approach to sizing pipe for compressed air and vacuum systems. ...
