5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for engineering majors
This book has everything you would expect for engineering. A must have for Engineering majors. And it's cheep!

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly fantastic reference.
I must admit here at the beginning that I am a bit of a snob when it comes to this type of book.I have reference books dating back a century for the sole reason that I do not trust nor like modern works. The current trend in reference is to provide only that information which will provide the reader with exactly what they want at that exact moment. This methodology requires that the reader return continually to the reference, wasting their time and energy.Older works provide a broader view of given topics and therefore tend to be held in my favor. This work may well be - in my opinion - the last of the great engineering references.

As stated by another reviewer, this work does an excellent job of covering most of the topics and information normally contained within a four-year mechanical engineering degree. This is not to say it is an apt replacement for a degree, just an excellent accessory to one.

Unlike the majority of generalized engineering references, this publication surpasses the norm of a mishmash of datasheets cribbed from manufacturers. The information contained is highly valuable, universally applicable and beautifully organized. That being said, it is true that the content is highly codified and would be of little value to those individuals who are unfamiliar with 'higher' level mathematics or engineering.

There are those in the engineering community who will find this reference lacking in specific topics - say, technical drafting, GD&T or materials science - but on the whole it is truly superb.

My only concern after having owned it for twenty-four hours is how I am going to reinforce the binding to keep the book from falling apart from too much use...

4-0 out of 5 stars A good reference, even for the PE Exam
This little book is a good tool to add to your tool box.It has a fairly complete tabulation of formulas and even goes into some depth explaining them, but not too much. The only reason it got 4 vs 5 stars for therating was that the index is not cross referenced.I got the book as an aid for my first attempt at the PE Exam, and it earned its way on several questions- mechanics of materials especially.I strongly recommend this book to anyone in engineering who needs a pocket guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!
This book is just awesome!

First thing you notice when you open the box: it's tiny!
The book measures about 11.5x15.5 CM for a thickness of 3 CM.
This format makes it very easy to carry around!

It's packed with LOADS of info which cover so many fields! Plus it's printed on 1 side only, which gives you some space to add notes. The table at the beginning (literally at the beginning - on the cover!) makes finding the info you're looking for very easy: each section is designated by a letter. In each section the progression is the same: from the basics up to the most advanced.

Very very handy, a must have! I which I had it when I was studying engineering man !! There's basically almost everything you need in there! Looking through it I was amazed at all the stuff that was coming back to my memory!

The hardcover is good, it makes the book strong (and feel strong).

I think the best feature of this book is that it covers many subjects, with a broad range of complexity level. That means whether you're just looking for some basic information to refresh your memory or get up to date with something, or if you are looking for some serious formulas and calculation, it's in there!
I know that I will probably not use much of the advanced calculation presented, but I might come across a few, and this little book is gonna make the thing easy :)
It's an excellent way to refresh your memory!

A must have :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Includes a Wide Diversity of Handy Information
This compact book provides not only information related to everyday engineering, but also such things as production engineering, electrical engineering, control engineering, etc. It includes mathematical information, such as statistics, differential and integral calculus, binomial theorem, hyperbolic functions, etc. It also includes statics, kinematics, machine parts, radiation physics, and much more. Basic chemistry is also overviewed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Step-By-Step Calculations for the Mundane
This is a necessary text for all engineers. Such textbooks are highly useful in establishing standards for mundane calculations performed in many branches of engineering. I just recently replaced my first edition of this book with the newest so that I would have access to the new enviromental engineer calculations added.

The book is now divided into civil, mechanical, architectural, and chemical engineering. If you can't find what you need, the safest bet is to check out the mechanical section next. In my opinion, the mechanical section is far too large and it is time to abandon the division of this book by degrees. I would divide it up by task; this would require simplifying the table of contents and an expansion of the index but then who really uses a TOC with a handbook?

Why do I use the word mundane? You won't find complicated calculation procedures here, nor will you find a lot of selection criteria information. What I mean is a table ranking technology. A good example of this is the series of books by Coulson and Richardson on chemical engineering. In that series, under drying, for example, all the technology is ranked according to product dryness, particle sizes, etc.. None of this is presented here. What makes this book useful is that is presents a procedure understandable to junior engineers and clients for solving a particular problem such as calculating a slab thickness or the size of a ventilation duct.

This book is a must-have if you are a consultant, contractor, or just want an understanding of a basic engineering calculation.

If this review was helpful, please add your vote.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Tool for any Student or Practitioner of any field of Engineering

An essential reference and work tool for any engineer, student or technician, this handbook contains more than 5000 calculation procedures that will show, anybody and anyone working with engineering applications, quick and easy calculations formulas and procedures to solve most engineering problems encountered in the industries and in class.

Using a "cookbook" format, this book presents detailed "recipes" that describe the problem to be solved; step-by-step procedures to be followed; a worked out example of the typical problem; and (in most cases) presents cross-referenced related calculations.

Truly a most have. I am an Electronics Engineer, but I work as an Instrumentation, Automation and Process Safety and Control Engineer for the Process Industries. As a result I have been involved with Chemical and Mechanical Engineering issues in a day to day basic. This handy reference has proven most useful and time saving when in need of an specific formula, or shortcut.

To: Lost in Air

I respectfully submit, that you need to appreciate Mr. Hicks' position. He has provided a conservative approach that will work in almost every situation. The empirical approach that you advocate may well work in most situations but I'll bet there is little margin built in forcontingencies.True, your solution may cost less, which is important.Butwill the low-margin, low cost solution still work 1 or 2 years from now orwill the pipe size be too small to allow for degradation/changes?Customerrepeat business must be a consideration, too.

I'm not trying to beconfrontational, and I understand what you're saying. But you have toappreciate the position that Mr. Hicks must take in such a handbook, and hetakes the only logical one, which is to be on the conservative side. People doing more than a couple of these calculations in a year in factshould consult more in-depth material, as you did.

Regards,

David R.Debo, P.E.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Hicks' approach to sizing pipe for compressed air
Mr. Hicks has done a wonderful job in compling equations, however, he has missed the practical applications in compressed air and vacuum systems.I initially used his theoritcal position on calculating pressure drop in pipe for compressed air.His position seems reasonable and logical until you compare the results with practical applications.Ingresoll-Rand, the air compressor manufacturer, published tables of pressure drop verses pipe sizes, delivery pressures and ACFM.Futher ASPE has published a data book which leads the engineer into an empirical equation for calculating pressure loss in compressed air piping. The results with both Ingresoll-Rand and ASPE agree.Using Mr. Hicks' therotical approach drives the pipe size much larger than needed and therefore the cost of the project. My suggestion is that Mr. Hicks contact I-R and ASPE to incorporate their empirical approach to sizing pipe for compressed air and vacuum systems. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars As Expected !!!!
Very pleased with the purchased. Got exactly what I expected. I recommend buying this book from the seller.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful and allowed in exam room
If you look at the PE exam website for CA, this is specifically mentioned that it is allowed. I quote, "Published reference materials entitled, "120 Solved Surveying Problems" for the California Special Civil Engineers Examination (CSSP) and "Civil Surveying Samples Examinations" for the California Special Engineering Surveying Examination (CSSE2) will be allowed." I used this book and thought it was very helpful. I passed the surveying exam on the first try using this book. [...]

1-0 out of 5 stars Not allowed in the CA Surveying Exam
Because this book is bound with staples, it is NOT allowed at the Surveying portion of the California State specific Civil PE exam, a fact I discovered today. If you try to take it in, it will be confiscated. While the book itself helped me understand the surveying concepts, it was very disappointing to have it taken away moments before the big test.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a very thorough review
I bought this book over some of the other civil review books because it looked longer and all of the other books had complaints about them. However, now I wish I had ignored those complaints and bought one of the others, because it would be hard for them to be any worse than this book.I would not recommend this as a good review. All of the review topics are VERY brief, most consisting of only a paragraph, if there is any review at all.It is basically a book of sample problems.Granted, the sample problems and explanations definitely help, but the problems all seemed rather simple and I'm worried that the exam questions may be more difficult. Also, there are topics on the civil EIT that are not covered at ALL in this book. The three major topics that are not covered are surveying, computers/numerical methods, and contracts/construction.All of these topics have 6 problems on the exam, just as much as geotech, hydraulics, or transportation!Water treatment was also not covered, unless you consider the environmental engineering chapter to cover it.I don't understand how they could publish an "effective review" book without covering 4 out of the 10 topics on the exam. The only redeeming quality to this review text is that it gives you a sample civil examination, but overall you'll be better off with Lindeburg's book.

THIS IS IN ADDITION TO MY PREVIOUS REVIEW GIVEN ABOVE:
I am now writing after actually having TAKEN the EIT exam.My thoughts on this book are even worse than before. My new MAJOR complaint is that the example problems in this review book are MUCH, MUCH EASIER than the actual problems on the EIT exam.I did pretty well on the sample exam in this book, because the problems were all really basic, but the actual exam question were all a level or two HARDER.You'd think a good test prep book would be the other way around.DON'T BUY THIS BOOK. ... Product Description
Learn to design code-compliant, earthquake-resistant structures with this practical guide

Earthquake Engineering demonstrates how to design structural members and joints for seismic resistance. The text guides readers through dozens of structural designs, documenting how to perform each step, make the necessary calculations, and adhere to relevant design codes. Most other texts on seismic design focus on theory and the construction of idealized structures; this text is a radical departure, presenting actual tested design methodologies that protect structures from the devastation of earthquakes.

All the design methods presented by the author comply with the current U.S. building codes. References to these codes are provided throughout the text, helping readers understand how they are integrated into an overall structural design.

Everything readers need to create sound designs, from analysis to design implementation, is provided, including:
* Dozens of worked problems throughout the text
* Complete reference chapters dedicated to matrices, differential equations, and numerical analysis
* Latest results of ongoing seismic research, including how these studies are likely to influence future design projects
* The latest 2006 IBC, highlighting significant variations from the 2000 and 2003 editions of the code
* Detailed coverage of seismic design for steel moment-resisting frame structures (SMRF), as well as braced-frame steel, concrete, masonry, and wood-framed structures

This text, with its many worked problems, is ideal for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students. Now that the seismic engineering provisions of the IBC Code apply to the entire United States, this text should also guide practicing engineers not yet exposed to seismic design in designing code-compliant, earthquake-resistant structures. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Most practical guide for seismic design
Excellent tool to get an engineer ready to start an earthquake design project. Shows practical applications based on sound principles of the 1997 UBC that evolved into the International Building Code which was gradually adopted nationwide. As stated in Chapter 2 of this book, the 97 UBC can be considered a model code for years to come.Future changes whether by the AISC, ACI or FEMA publications can easily be adopted by engineers to fit the project on their drawing board.

1-0 out of 5 stars Review of book by a structural engineer
I was extremely disapointed in this book.On steel moment frames there is nothing about FEMA 350 and its successors or the latest AISC implementations of it.In the braced frame sections there is nothing aboutthe Whitmore section or the detail requirements for special concentric braced frames. The book is mostly geared towards the 1997 UBC that was in use only in California until 2008; the rest of the country had moved on.For more up to date material check publications from AISC, FEMA and the Steeltips series for steel and ACI for concrete. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Eh...
The book came in very fast, but the front cover was pretty damaged during shipping.

4-0 out of 5 stars Soil Mechanics Text
This text book is a good read, it explains it's figures and has much better descriptions for the examples to follow. I wish i had this Book last year.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Undergraduate Students and Beginners!
If you're looking for a Soil Mechanics text with clear-cut explanations, current design perspectives, and newcomer-friendliness: look no further. Coduto's done a great job with this text, and for undergraduate instruction in soil mechanics, or for the beginner in the field, this is the most easy-to-understand text around.

This is not, however, a book that will continue to be used regularly by a geotechnical practitioner. The entry-level nature of the text means (almost by definition) that it is not dense enough to maintain its usefulness once the user has mastered the basics. It may serve as a nice reference for the practing civil engineer who is not involved in geotechnical engineering, as it covers the basics nicely (e.g., so what does my geotech consultant mean by "equivalent unit weight"?)

5-0 out of 5 stars I was there.
I was one of the students in Don Coduto's graduate level class that helped him "use" this book when it was in the final review stages. We helped him find all the little mistakes before final publishing.I still carry around that old 700+ page volume of a notebook we had for that class. It's nice to see it finally published. It is an OUTSTANDING book making geotechincal work more readily accessible to the average engineer. The example problems will help one grasp the concepts faster.Don can always be contacted with questions as well.ENJOY.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent entry level geotechnical engineering book
This book is very easy to follow. It shows explainations, concepts, theories, and provides beautiful examples. Excellent book for undergraduate studies. ... Read more

Product Description
Quick Reference helps you get the most out of every minute of the PE exam by putting the formulas you need most often at your fingertips. Many times, all you need to solve an exam problem is a formula, and Quick Reference is the fastest way to find it. Designed to work as a companion to the Civil Engineering Reference Manual, this book provides key formulas--hundreds of them, collected from CERM and organized by topic and indexed for rapid access. Each formula is keyed to CERM, so you can refer back for supporting information if necessary. Having both books with you during the exam substantially reduces downtime spent page-flipping. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not needed if you heavily tab the reference manual
Quick Reference only contains equations found within the main reference manual. If studying from the main book, this quick reference is of limited usefulness if you know where everything is in the big book (e.g. use lots of the sticky tabs).

3-0 out of 5 stars I didn't even use this book
I guess some people would find this book useful, but I had already tabbed up the big book and had my other formulas I needed in my notes.I just never found a reason to use it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not likely to be helpful on the exam
I purchased this book on the assumption that it would be a "quick reference" for the PE exam, similar to the quick reference NCEES provides for the Fundamentals of Engineering exam.Far from it.It is just a bunch of equations. None of the variables are defined for the equations. There are no useful tables. For example, everyone knows the equation for thermal expansion, but a table of expansion coeficients (not to mention other material properties), that would be helpful! but, of course, not included.I will conclude by saying that I am very disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars P.E. exam review
This book was most helpful in prearing for the comprehensive portion of the P.E. exam.I was able to answer most all general questions in the morning session of the new test.I did use the entire book and worked the problems in each chapter.I recommend additional references for your specific field of study, unless your field is water supply or structures. Both of these sections are extensive, particularly when using additional information from geotechnical chapters.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother!
If you already bought the review manual, save your money! This is nothing more than a regurgitation of the text without the problems. If you have not purchased the review manual, its still not worth the money. ... Read more
