1-0 out of 5 stars Not a very thorough review
I bought this book over some of the other civil review books because it looked longer and all of the other books had complaints about them. However, now I wish I had ignored those complaints and bought one of the others, because it would be hard for them to be any worse than this book.I would not recommend this as a good review. All of the review topics are VERY brief, most consisting of only a paragraph, if there is any review at all.It is basically a book of sample problems.Granted, the sample problems and explanations definitely help, but the problems all seemed rather simple and I'm worried that the exam questions may be more difficult. Also, there are topics on the civil EIT that are not covered at ALL in this book. The three major topics that are not covered are surveying, computers/numerical methods, and contracts/construction.All of these topics have 6 problems on the exam, just as much as geotech, hydraulics, or transportation!Water treatment was also not covered, unless you consider the environmental engineering chapter to cover it.I don't understand how they could publish an "effective review" book without covering 4 out of the 10 topics on the exam. The only redeeming quality to this review text is that it gives you a sample civil examination, but overall you'll be better off with Lindeburg's book.

THIS IS IN ADDITION TO MY PREVIOUS REVIEW GIVEN ABOVE:
I am now writing after actually having TAKEN the EIT exam.My thoughts on this book are even worse than before. My new MAJOR complaint is that the example problems in this review book are MUCH, MUCH EASIER than the actual problems on the EIT exam.I did pretty well on the sample exam in this book, because the problems were all really basic, but the actual exam question were all a level or two HARDER.You'd think a good test prep book would be the other way around.DON'T BUY THIS BOOK. ... Product Description
This revised edition of the bestselling Practice of Reservoir Engineering has been written for those in the oil industry requiring a working knowledge of how the complex subject of hydrocarbon reservoir engineering can be applied in the field in a practical manner.Containing additions and corrections to the first edition, the book is a simple statement of how to do the job and is particularly suitable for reservoir/production engineers as well as those associated with hydrocarbon recovery.

This practical book approaches the basic limitations of reservoir engineering with the basic tenet of science: Occam's Razor, which applies to reservoir engineering to a greater extent than for most physical sciences - if there are two ways to account for a physical phenomenon, it is the simpler that is the more useful. Therefore, simplicity is the theme of this volume.

Reservoir and production engineers, geoscientists, petrophysicists, and those involved in the management of oil and gas fields will want this edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely the best
Dake really were in his best moment to known something and wrote down, here you can find out the state of the art, even now at 2007 of how to do the things in reservoir engineering, planning, following, just read it, you do not loose nothing, always win.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reservoir Engineering
This is a book which teaches an Engineer how to practice reservoir engineering in the oil and gas field.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Workable Handbook
Most books on Reservoir Engineering are very university-Academic oriented and its up to us field engineers to decide wether such theories are workable or not in actual practice.
The Practice is a book that might be ranked as a handbook for applicable usage, especially offshore where economics dictates most decision making.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Goldmine of a Book
One of the few true "must read" books in the field.

Mr. Dake's book is unique -- reading it is like working side-by-side with an exceptionally intelligent, erudite, experienced engineer.Despite the author's wry conversational style, this is not a light volume that can be absorbed by speed-reading.The author is sharing decades worth of real-world experience, and it merits close study.

For example, after all the thick volumes that have been written on oil well testing, who would expect that there could be anything left to say?Yet Dake's approach to well testing is eye-opening, and will certainly influence this engineer's approach to designing & interpreting well tests.

Experienced engineers may find themselves wanting to argue with some of the author's opinions & recommendations, but they will conclude that the time they invested in studying this book was well spent.

5-0 out of 5 stars A grand legacy
This book is all that one would expect from Dake, and more. The long awaited update bridges the gaps left as technology has moved on since the original publication. Unfortunately Laurie is no longer with us and this publication is one of many fitting and lasting legacies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
I used this book to study for the April 2009 PE exam, and I passed the first time. This is much more helpful than the bigger PE study guides that only have short sections on Surveying. This book is still small and has an easy learning curve.I highly recommend this book to study for the PE.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for the person in Engineering survey parctice.
This book is not the ultimate reference for the preperation for the California section of the PE exam. Study material provided by other sources like "PES" from Freson California, have served me better since I am not in the practice of Engineering Survey. I have no doubt that the author is a professional, yet the delivery is some how complicated for some of the topics, specially the DMD, and error of closure. The coverage of the Engineer's Act and Surveyors Act are also limited compared to other resources. Inclduing "Como",I have obtained study material from 4 reputable sources, but this reference was not the one that I had to depend on taking the statetest. This is my personal input.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great review book for California Engineering Surveying Section exam
I took the California special seismic/survey exam fall 2008, and used this book as the sole source for preparing for the surveying exam and as the only reference for the open book surveying exam. This book was great in preparing me for the exam, there was nothing on the exam that wasn't covered by this book. The content and the example problems do a wonderful job in relearning or refreshing you to surveying, even if it has been several years.I haven't received my results yet so I am not a 100% sure if I passed, however I am confident that I did well on the survey exam because of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Passing the CA PE Surveying
Don't believe the old reviews previously posted. They are for the old version. This resource is perfect for the CA PE Surveying exam.I was surprised at how closely the problems matched up.The California Acts and things like that were key, as there is limited resources to find that information.Obviously, not all the information in this book was useful, but the horizontal, vertical curves, leveling, photogrammetry, and parcel map sections were clutch.I would recommend that anyone taking this test buy it.Work through it and feel confident for the test.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent Review Text
Having recently taken the PE, I found this to be quite a useful reference for the principles of surveying (together with the surveying textbook by Kavanagh). The major topics are covered in this text, and as long as the test taker using other reference materials to go more in depth, there should be no problem. However, I could have been lucky this time around and your mileage may vary (most of my colleagues have had problems with the surveying portion of the PE).

Word of warning for future PE exam takers:NCEES and the state board do not allow loose or stapled sheets during the exam, and during the October 2007 exam, this book (and other similar reference materials) was disallowed as it is stapled.People who had inserted it into 3-ring binders didn't have a problem. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Jumpy
This was a required book for class and it didn't live up to my high standards. There is no fluidity to this book. I hope the drafters who helped write this book are better at planning road ways than planning the order of the chapters this book has. The chapters jump around too much for my liking. This book, however, is ADDA certified.

5-0 out of 5 stars Civil Drafting Technology
SO far a great book.Shipped really fast, was in perfect shape as noted, I have no disappointments with the sellers.

3-0 out of 5 stars civil drafting technology
I purchased this book with the hopes that it would help me understand civil drafting. There is no answer section to check my work. So,,,I do not know if I am on the right track with my understanding.
Does anyone know if there is a solutions manual?

2-0 out of 5 stars Dated, generic, and overpriced
When I read the word Drafting in the title I assumed this book would focus on civil drafting as it applies to modern (CAD) technology. Instead there are many references to manual drafting which few drafters use any more. A better title would leave the technology out of the title and substitute the word theory, thus letting the buyer know that this is a generic overview of civil drafting theory, not a book that a CAD operator will get much use out of.

In my estimation this book has a Value of around thirty dollars only. Unfortunately, pricing trends seem to indicate that any words committed to print by the The Gods (engineers, programmers, etc.) are worth their weight in gold, regardless of their value. ... Read more

Product Description
Although initially based purely on environmental principles of reuse and recycling, natural waste treatment systems proved to have economic advantages over mechanical systems in many cases, being less expensive to build and operate as well as requiring less energy. Thus, natural waste treatment methods reemerged even as advanced wastewater treatment technologies exploded in growth. Reflecting this burgeoning popularity, Natural Wastewater Treatment Systems is the first book to integrate all the major types of natural treatment systems into a single source.

Beginning with an overview of the types of natural treatment systems, the book outlines the planning, feasibility assessment, and site selection processes unique to natural processes as well as the basic process responses and interactions governing natural systems. The authors then examine the systems in detail, discussing wastewater pond systems, free water surface constructed wetlands, subsurface and vertical flow constructed wetlands, land treatment, sludge management, and onsite wastewater systems. They illustrate the practical aspects through 30 examples; include 178 data tables for comparing costs, performance, and constraints; and describe new approaches to partially mixed ponds, including dual-powered aeration ponds.

Written by eminent experts in natural waste treatment, Natural Wastewater Treatment Systems is an invaluable tool for selecting, planning, and implementing ecologically and economically sound wastewater treatment systems. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars passing the torch
I have been a consulting engineer for over 20 years now, and this book has a lot to offer. It sits on the top shelf of my bookcase when I need simple answers fast. The original edition of this book was essentially a summarization of design manuals published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in the late 1970's and early 1980's.If you are old enough to have these original "purple manuals" on your shelf (and actually use them), then you probably don't need this book.

But the reality in the environmental engineering field is that most of the "old guard" who worked in the Construction Grants and Superfund program are at, or close, to retirement. If you are part of the new generation entering the field, this is a great book as it essentially encapsulates 4 of the old EPA manuals, plus you get the benefit of the extensive career experience of the authors.

This book did not get 5 stars in my review because most of the data analysis is from the late 1980's and early 1990's, and there are a lot empirical equations drawn from this old (and limited) data set. Most of the observations on "new" technology developments are in the literature review sections and the design equations have not necessarily been updated to reflect new research findings.Since 90% of the data on natural treatment systems has been published in the last 10 years, readers should be aware that assumptions behind old equation sets are limited and need to treated critically.

If you have an interest in natural wastewater treatment systems, this is a good starting point for the environmental engineer and a great overview manual for other practitioners in the field. If you want to specialize at a graduate-school level in a particular technology like constructed wetlands or pond systems, then you will have to dig deeper to find the cutting edge in more specialized books and the research journal literature. ... Product Description
Throughout the world, and even in the United States, engineers are tackling the challenges of sustainable development and public health - challenges that engineers are uniquely qualified to address. Yet engineers working abroad on development projects often lack the knowledge and information to design, plan, construct, operate, and maintain technology that is culturally, economically, and geographically appropriate - technology that takes into account gender, does not use significant amounts of fossil fuels, accounts for environmental conditions like water scarcity, and uses local construction materials. This readable and fully illustrated guide is a complete handbook for international engineering service projects that involve water supply and treatment, watersheds, sanitation systems, and indoor air quality. It provides the tools necessary to implement the right technology in developing regions around the world. The authors introduce sustainable engineering and explain how environmental engineering fosters public health, with an emphasis on the relationship between community participation and the success of an engineering project. In addition, this book covers topographical surveying, project planning, watershed management, and construction materials and techniques. Specific technical guidance is offered for the design and construction of multiple systems for water supply, water and wastewater treatment, and flood storage and drainage, as well as solid waste management and indoor air quality improvement. This book is a valuable resource for engineering students, faculty, and practitioners involved with programs like Engineers without Borders, Water for People, and Engineers for a Sustainable World, as well as those affiliated with government groups, international agencies, and charitable organizations. ... It's an excellent book for engineers' use as recommended by a prof teaching the course. There are also newer versions of this textbook, but I am very happy to have this 4th edition. In addition, there is "Geotechnical Engg-A practical Problem Solving Approach" book that I recommend (ISBN-1-60427-016-7) that supports the textbook with good problem solving engineering examples. It should be also in your library if you deal with soil mechanics and designs.

3-0 out of 5 stars Plenty of problems, very poor solutions
This manual has a variety of questions on each subject, however the solutions are sometimes confusing.Variables are given, but are not defined.Steps and conversions are skipped.Sometimes answers are actually given as "The correct answer is (b)" and thats it, no reason why.

I also don't think the manual has been adequately updated to the new breadth and depth format of the PE exam. There are several example that ask you to draw something or write an explaination. The new PE format is multiple choice.I think the CERM (Civil Engineering Reference Manual) is the best bet.

This review is based on the 1968 edition. Each chapter is written by a separate specialist. There is a wealth of data on such things as masonry construction, timber engineering, steel construction, soil mechanics, frame analysis, shell structures, long-span roofs, properties of steels, barrel vaults, bridge design, rigid joints, wind deflection of structures, design of towers, and much more.

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Book"
The "Bible" for structural engineers for decades past and present. Updated and a "must have" for the structural design engineer. The place to start when a new problem is encountered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful resource
It's a book with many useful information, tables and examples. A really valued reference.

2-0 out of 5 stars Unit problem

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Comprehensive, and Especially Valuable for Semi-Rigid Jointed Structures
This single volume includes chapters on topics as diverse as timber engineering, tunnel construction, fire engineering, bridges of all types, glass structures, fiber-reinforced polymer composites, and much more.

One exceptionally-helpful chapter in this book, in my opinion, is Chapter 23, on semirigid frame structures. Author Xu explains the concept of semirigid joints, summarizes the state-of-the-art knowledge in the field, and provides worked examples of problems involving semirigid-fixed beams and braced frames. The worked examples are especially helpful in that they each show the solution in a very step-by-step manner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive structural engineering book on the market
The Handbook of Structural Engineering is a comprehensive reference source on the fundamentals of, and special topics in, structural engineering. The book is intended for practicing engineers, and the introduction notes that the ideal reader will be an "M.S.-level engineer." Consequently, treatment of subjects is highly technical and emphasizes mathematical explanations to an extent that it might be of limited use to novices.

The first section provides a detailed overview of the fundamentals of structural engineering. Following this introductory section are eight chapters covering special types of structures, and thirteen chapters on special topics in structural engineering. All chapters contain a brief glossary of key concepts discussed within the chapter, an extensive bibliography, suggested readings, and a list of relevant codes and standards where applicable. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Useful Book
I found that doing problems for the PE exam is the best way to study. This book gives you problems in each of the disciplines that are on the exam, but doesn't give them in the format that is on the exam. The exam has one question per "situation" whereas this book asks several questions based upon one "situation".Even though the problems are not in the format, they are comparable in difficulty to the problems on the PE exam. If you are looking for problems, this book provides them. The only issue with the book is that the solutions often reference the reference books like the steel manual or books from ACI, which you may or may not have.Overall, a helpful book if you want more practice problems. ...
