G. de Man worked on the systematics of both the Crustacea, in particular on Decapoda (i.e. crabs, crayfish, lobsters and shrimps), and the microscopically Nematoda or roundworms. The biographic part describes his years of childhood and youth, student days and the time he was working at the National Museum of Natural History, Leiden, the Netherlands and the period after he resigned at the museum. Of this form a detailed description, accompanied with figures, has been given by the present author in his account of the Crustacea of the Norwegian North Atlantic Expedition. It was there pointed out that the E. carinata of Moebius is identical with Boeck 's species, nor can I see any essential difference between it and the form subsequently recorded by Dr. Hansen from the Kara Sea as E. glacialis. In the accompanying plate, I give improved habitus-figures of both sexes, from specimens collected during the Nansen Expedition.Occurrence. Of this magnificent Calanoid, specimens were found in almost all the samples, and it seems, indeed, to be as common in the eastern as in the western part of the polar basin traversed by the 'Fram'. The largest female specimens, some of which still had their large, flattened ovisac adhering to the genital segment, measured in length about 10 mm., a truely gigantic size for a free Copepod. An unusually large 'Nauplius' found in some of the samples taken north of the New Siberian Islands, I believe to be the larva of this Calanoid.Distribution. It is liberally illustrated with more than 1000 line drawings giving good views of many species as well as diagnostic illustrations. Details for each species include the authority, year of description, sometimes a common name, diagnosis, size, geographical distribution, and ecological and depth distribution. The chapter on the Stomatopoda is by Shane Ahyong.

Sections within each chapter are hierarchical, species within genera, within families (often with subfamilies as well). Identification is achieved through the use of dichotomous keys adapted from many originally published in the primary literature, or developed from scratch. Some keys are to all Australian taxa but most are to southern Australian taxa only.
