Well this book is very detailed, which can be a good thing if you are wanting to learn. Also boring to read.Overall it covers the basics very well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent,Integrative, Comprehensive & Current
I am a second year dental student and find this book to be comprehensive in its theoretical approach and practice of preventive dentistry in private and public health sectors. A university level background in chemistry, microbiology, biochemistry and dental materials are necessary to understand some of the more advanced concepts.

Each chapter beings with clearly stated objectives highlighting the subject matter that the authors consider essential. Key words and concepts appear in bold, italicized letters.Throughout each chapter there aretrue-and-false and multiple choice questions. The correct answers given as well asthorough explanations as to why the other multiple choice answers are wrong. This comprehensive approach enhanced my knowledge and understanding of the material. Each chapter concludes with a series of auto evaluation questions highlighting the essential information in each chapter. As a result, I did not have to read and then re-read each chapter.

The following topics are discussed in-depth: Introduction to Primary Preventive Dentistry and its relevance to today's dental practice; The Development and Structure of Dental Plaque, Calculus, and other Tooth-adherent Organic Materials; The Developing Carious Lesion; The Role of Dental Plaque in the Etiology and Progress ofPeriodontal Disease; Various types of Toothbrushes and Tooth brushing Techniques; Dentifrices, Mouth Rinses, and Chewing Gums; Supplemental Oral Health Self-Care; Water Fluoridation; Pit-and-Fissure Sealants; Oral Biological Defenses in Tooth Demineralization and Remineralization; Caries Activity Testing; Periodontal Disease Prevention; Sugar and Other Sweeteners; Nutrition, Diet, and Oral Conditions; Understanding Human Motivation in Oral Care; Dental Public Health Programs; Preventive Oral Health in Early Childhood; Oral Health Promotion in Schools; Preventive Oral Health Care for Compromised Individuals; Geriatric Dental Care; Primary Preventive Dentistry in Hospital Settings; and Rationale, Guidelines, and Procedures for Prevention of Plaque-associated diseases. Different age and health status groups are also considered including pedodontic, geriodontic, handicapped, and hospitalized individuals. Finally, there is a chapter on how to use risk assessment to integrate prevention into the total treatment plan.

As a practicing dental hygienist, I found this book helpful. It is a great review for all professionals in the dental field.

The book is very technical and some areas are not smooth reading.I did find a fewhelpful sections such as the one on Topical Fluoride. However, I do thinkI will refer to the Wilkins text more often.

If you are looking for adifferent style of writing or different perspective (and have the extramoney to spend) then I would recommend this book.It is good forresearching certain topics. ... Read more

The Methods of Oral Epidemiology provides a comprehensive assessment of the epidemiology of oral diseases and the determinants of their distribution in society. The Distribution of Oral Diseases and Conditions gives a detailed presentation of how the common oral diseases are distributed in the community. Burt and Eklund have taken a good thing and made it better. The new edition of "Dentistry, Dental Practice, and the Community" maintains the attention to detail and liberal referencing that was found inthe 4th edition, but it adds tables and charts that are easier to read andtighter organization of the chapters such that common topics flow togethermore readily. 1-0 out of 5 stars Read other books too
with better research.

For those who think the ADA is some kind of sacred cow, read the "The Fluoride Deception" by Christopher Bryson - with about 100+ pages of footnotes.

Some of these "organizations" (government and otherwise) were complicit in proclaiming fluoride some kind of miracle for tooth health.

Once you follow the money and trace the origins back to the Cold War program (as Bryson does in this book) and learn what they did to workers for the sake of "national security", and to anyone who would dispute their DoD company-based "studies" - you'll never use fluoride toothpaste or get "standard" (mercury) fillings again.

1-0 out of 5 stars Fiction only
Please be warned that this book is not based on research, it is based on opinion and personal stories. The dental community takes patient safety and health very seriously and has conducted extensive research into the subject of dental amalgam. There have been NO well conducted studies to support claims against it. In addition, fluoride is one of the great victories of the public health system, significantly decreasing the incidence of dental caries. Of course ANYTHING in too large of a dose, or taken in an improper manner can be a poison including--yes it is true, even water. "The dose makes the poison" For your health and safety, please don't take this book as fact, as it really has no sound basis!

ADA Statement on Dental Amalgam www.ada.org

Dental amalgam (silver filling) is considered a safe, affordable and durable material that has been used to restore the teeth of more than 100 million Americans. It contains a mixture of metals such as silver, copper and tin, in addition to mercury, which chemically binds these components into a hard, stable and safe substance. Dental amalgam has been studied and reviewed extensively, and has established a record of safety and effectiveness.

Issued in late 1997, the FDI World Dental Federation and the World Health Organization consensus statement on dental amalgam stated, "No controlled studies have been published demonstrating systemic adverse effects from amalgam restorations." The document also states that, aside from rare instances of local side effects of allergic reactions, "the small amount of mercury released from amalgam restorations, especially during placement and removal, has not been shown to cause any ... adverse health effects."

The ADA's Council on Scientific Affairs' 1998 report on its review of the recent scientific literature on amalgam states: "The Council concludes that, based on available scientific information, amalgam continues to be a safe and effective restorative material." The Council's report also states, "There currently appears to be no justification for discontinuing the use of dental amalgam."

In an article published in the February 1999 issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association, researchers report finding "no significant association of Alzheimer's Disease with the number, surface area or history of having dental amalgam restorations" and "no statistically significant differences in brain mercury levels between subjects with Alzheimer's Disease and control subjects."

The U.S. Public Health Service issued a report in 1993 stating there is no health reason not to use amalgam, except in the extremely rare case of the patient who is allergic to a component of amalgam. This supports the findings of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the National Institutes of Health Technology Assessment Conference and the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, that dental amalgam is a safe and effective restorative material. In addition, in 1991, Consumer Reports noted, "Given their solid track record . . . amalgam fillings are still your best bet."

In 1991, the FDA's Dental Products Panel found no valid data to demonstrate clinical harm to patients from amalgams or that having them removed would prevent adverse health effects or reverse the course of existing diseases. The FDA's most recent reaffirmation of amalgam's safety was published on December 31, 2002.

The reaffirmation reads, "FDA and other organizations of the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) continue to investigate the safety of amalgams used in dental restorations (fillings). However, no valid scientific evidence has ever shown that amalgams cause harm to patients."

It continues, "Also, USPHS scientists analyzed about 175 peer-reviewed studies submitted in support of three citizen petitions received by FDA after the 1993 report. They concluded that data in these studies did not support claims that individuals with dental amalgam restorations will experience problems, including neurologic, renal or developmental effects, except for rare allergic or hypersensitivity reactions."

The U.S. Public Health Service found in 1993 "no persuasive reason to believe that avoiding amalgams or having them removed will have a beneficial effect on health." In fact, it is inadvisable to have amalgams removed unnecessarily because it can cause structural damage to healthy teeth.

The ADA supports ongoing research in the development of new materials that it hopes will someday prove to be as safe and effective as dental amalgam. However, the ADA continues to believe that amalgam is a valuable, viable and safe choice for dental patients and concurs with the findings of the U.S. Public Health Service that amalgam has "continuing value in maintaining oral health."

5-0 out of 5 stars Telling the truth
can often get a person into trouble.I don't know who wrote the 1 star reviews - presumably dentists, or morons who think that modern science is trustworthy.

I was a dental assistant in the military in the US, and what I do know is that many substances that dentists use are toxic, particulary that old standby, flouride, which is a derivative of aluminum and may in fact be responsible for the rise in Alzheimers cases in this country.

As a dental assistant, I was required to take any extra mercury amalgam and put it into a cup of glycerine. This is in order that the mercury fumes won't escape as quickly and overexpose the staff (including Dr. Pain himself). One then wonders why the dental community doesn't mind sticking this stuff in your mouth, forever.

Another danger is overexposure to x-rays - did you ever wonder why the assistant gets the hell out of the room and behind protective cover when taking your x-ray?Yes, overexposure - but we still don't know how much is too much.

This book needs to be read by dental patients everywhere, because whenever one gets any sort of medical treatment, in addition to the hoped for outcome of improvement, they are also exposing themselves to all sorts of additional risks.

1-0 out of 5 stars Shall We See The Facts
You are only receiving 10% of the information here. There are many people who can say that they removed their mercury fillings and their cancer disappeared. But were they receiving other forms of treatment or did they simply take the fillings out.Amalgam fillings are put in using high speed suction which takes up all the debris and then sealed so no mercury seeps out.A lot of doctors are now using rubber dams to further diminish the possibility of exposure. As for orthodontic concerns with braces.Do the research.Braces stretch the bone which causes much discomfort which yes can throw the body off balance for a short period of time. This is not due to electrical impulses, this is from the bone stretching and growing. The age old term "growing pains" would be used if it weren't for the metal in the child's mouth. If you do the research you will find the same results.Just remember, people will write anything to sell books.Would you buy a book that says "Trust your dentist, he is all knowing".Of course not.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't let this crap fool you!
Come on people, let's get real. How many scientific articles (well controlled studies) were used in this book. The answer is none! The segment of the population with cancer, cystic fibrosis, MS etc is completely equal when controlling for the variable of "mercury" silver amalgams. So using this idiot's logic, silver fillings should also be said to prevent disease. It is sad to see a man using poor science to get peoples hopes up, just to make some money! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Who would of guessed?
Who would have ever guessed that dental disease could have such a signifigant part in so many illnesses? For far to long denistry and the rest of medicine have been totally seperate fields. What is going on in your mouth is seen as having little relavance to the disease conditions going on the in the rest of the body. For to long dental school training has focused on saving your teeth at any cost.

"The Roots of Disease: Connecting Denistry andMedicine" was written by two men. One of these men is a dentist and the other a cadiologist. For over a decade these two health care professionals have witnessed that the removal and complete healing of infected dental sites can often result in the total healing (or at least vast improvement) of other diseases in the body.

Have you ever been told that root canals harbor bacteria that infect the rest of your body causing diseae? That this is also true of sites where wisdom teeth have been improperly removed? I wasn't able to regain my health until my dental issues were dealt with. I no longer have a stressed out immune system and the constant candida albicans that this reulted in.

This well written, thorough look at the health problems affeted by oral infection is a must read for anyone interested in obtaining optimal health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dentistry's whiz kids write again
Tom Levy graduated from Johns Hopkins University, studied and taught medicine at Tulane, and then, to paraphrase his words, actually began to think about what he was doing.

Most people do not understand that there are hardly any fields of medicine in which the best in the field don't believe things could be done a lot better, but run into institutional resistance which they can't overcome.Nor is this phenomenon limited to medicine.

In this book, written together with Dr. Kulacz, a former instructor at NYU, they critique of dentistry, and expose how antiquated and indeed antediluvian practices cause much sickness. This is nothing new; it was known more than 30 years ago. When I brought this book to the attention of my dentist, a great dentist in his own right, he was very grateful for the ideas in it, and agreed that Levy and Kulacz's contention that painkillers that contain noradrenalin retard wound healing, and that you have to manually curette (scrape) out the mess under bad root canals made absolute sense.Using a drill produces sufficient heat to kill more bone.)

Anyone with an inordinate interest in critiques of dental science - small crowd that we may be - does well to purchase this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank God for this book!
Thank God for this book and Dr.Kulacz! A M.D. from the Cleveland Clinic told me about Dr.Kulacz and this book. When reading this book about some of the other patients I thought I was reading about myself. This book is as truthful as it gets about root canals , dental materials and proper procedures about extractions. This book is a must read for the people that suspect that their teeth may be one of the culprits to their health issues. Of course after reading this book I would think most sensible people would not take drastic action as to extract their own teeth ,as one person posted. I would love to stand outside of every dentist office and pass out this book to patients that are about to get a root canal. This book opens your eyes to the other side of root canals that your dentist will not tell you before the procedure. By the way your natural teeth are not better if they are giving you pain and lowering your immune system. You must read this book if you are searching for the truth about your teeth problems. Dr.Kulacz has integrity and morals which is what you would expect from any doctor. If I could I would rate this book higher than a five.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vital information for your health
I have not only read this book, but have also been a patient of Dr. Kulacz.Unfortunately, many detractors choose wishful thinking over verifiable, scientific fact. They pay for their ongoing denial with health troubles.Nobody wants to lose any teeth, but if the alternative is long term devastating health problems, the loss of a tooth is a small price to pay.I was in this category with both root canals and the related dental infections and they badly affected my health.Once removed I felt noticeably better. To further prove the case, the extracted tooth was sent to a lab for testing and the results confirmed serious infection.Study the subject and look at the evidnce and you will agree with me.Read all the related books as the evidence is overwhelming.Find one of the very few dentists around the country experienced in this protocol.PS, Most dentists know virtually nothing about any of this.It is therefore your health and your responsibility.

It seems that after reading this book one would be inclined to take drastic action, like extracting thier OWN valuable teeth.Teeth need root canal treatment beacause they are infected in the first place. Most of the time, the infection is totally removed (85-95%).Yes there are instances where this infection is resolved, in which case extraction may be needed.Yes after extraction there may be bacteria left behind so what then....extract your whole jaw????(did some one forget to mention that we have an immune system that has been dealing with bacteria, fungi and viruses for long before dentistry was around).Okay so our jaw is removed and some of the naturally occuring bacteris on our skin (yes our skin is not sterile) gets into the wound. Then what, ask for a decapitation? This seems to be the line of though given by the aurthor/s and it is totaly irrational.

Example 2.You get a scratch on your arm and yes bacteria get in, the skin heals over and traps the bacteria....what would the aurthor suggest...an amputation of your arm?Or doest he think he can pluck out microscopic bacteria (that are too small for see) with tweezers.Non-sense.

Our body parts are valuable, we have an immune system that fights bacteria and heals wounds/infections.We have marvelous doctors and dentists that can help the body beat these problems..so we can keep our body parts.Natural teeth are better that articfical anything. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre at best
Attractive layout, nice diagrams, broad coverage of areas.Very poor information.Lack of basic info. For example, according to the book, the ideal prep for a pfm is 360 shoulder with bevel.I don't think anyone would seriously use this.Discussion of luting and cements for all ceramics is cursory. In conclusion: there are much better sources out there for the money.Steer clear.

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't be better
After reading many books regarding the medical aspect of dentistry, I can honestly say that this book by Scully and Cawson is the best I've read and the best I've enjoyed reading. 4-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Periodontology and Implant Dentistry
the book is very thorough explaining all about periodontology. But in some chapters, sometimes the words are so complex and need to be read repeatedly in order to get the meaning of the authors. In my opinion, using the simplest word is possible the best option for every reader, especially when you are in hurry time before exam, the simplest word is making the life easier. This book is recommended by my tutors.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings
There is a lot of information in this book, and I mean a lot. That's a good thing right?Yes and no.For being such a large, reference oriented book, this has one of the worst indexes I have ever seen. Its terrible. They obviously spent a great deal of time on the book, and its mind-boggling that they wouldn't put a good index in.As such, this is pretty much worthless for quick references. So we are left with a HUGE book, probably suitable only for perio residents, since they are probably the only ones with the motivation, obssesiveness, and lack of sanity to plow through this.Add a good index, and I'd give it five stars. ...
