Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Egyptology," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Egyptology in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Egyptology when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Egyptology, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Product Description
Defining the literary as the content of literary books, as a distinctive material product, the author provides transliteration and translation into English for every surviving literary composition from the Middle Kingdom. Alongside famous intact masterpieces such as the Tale of Sanehat (Sinuhe), all literary fragments are also included. The series of translations is preceded by a short general discussion of four key aspects of literature: survival of books (with a list of the ten surviving groups of books from ancient Egypt); definitions of literature; authorship, the question of how literary works were composed; and reception, the question of how they were read. ... Product Description
Fecundity figures, personifications of non-sexual fertily, played a significant role in ancient Egyptian religious art. This detailed and comprehensive investigation of Egyptian iconography during the Old and New Kingdoms aims to classify the types of male and female figures represented, and so understand the intentions behind such personifications, whilst also placing the artwork within its cultural, religious and artistic context. In addition, the study includes a theoretical discussion of the form and function of personifications. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars FUNDAMENTAL STUDY ON EGYPTIAN ICONOGRAPHIC PRINCIPLES
This book by well-knwon British Egyptologist, Dr. John Baines, has become by now a"clasical" reference-text for anyone interested in ancient Egyptian religion, especially from an iconographical point of view. None the less, the first part of the book will be useful also to historians of religion, since in it, Dr. Baines attempted to define - through a series of actual cases - the problematic of religious iconography and classification of iconographical major themes; his comments upon the methodological problems when dealing with such an issue go beyond the field of Egyptology properly speaking, and this adds a greater value to his job. Part two focuses in the analyses of what up to-day has been loosely called "Nile Gods" in the "decorative grammar" of Egyptian Art and Architecture, who, after him, must be better named"Fecundity Figures". Since these fat genii are intimely intertwined with the heraldic motif of the "Uniting of the Two Lands" - a royal theme -, this is also reviewed on. For those interested in the coloring as used in Egyptian art and writing, there is an appendix on the matter, along with illustrations, tables and indexes. A great job from a great scholar. Highly recommended, if you find it. ... Read more

“The HATHOR HOLOCAUST” Ancient Egypt adventure thriller by Roy Lester Pond

Can a renegade Egyptologist stop the re-activation of an ancient apocalypse of plague, pestilence and global scorching?

An apocalyptic danger has arisen from the ancient past in Egypt today bringing a threat to the Middle East and also to the West - of plague, pestilence, fiery destruction and global scorching.
Anson Hunter, controversial, alternative Egyptologist, theorist, blogger and phenomenologist is the hero of this historical adventure novel with a rich mythological vein.Followed by Western Intelligence organizations, shadowed by a mysterious androgyne assassin, he must race to avert a crisis in a quest spanning USA, Britain and Egypt. Who is behind the plan to trigger an apocalypse? Neo-religionists, Torchbearers with a dangerous New Age agenda, Christian dispensationalists who are eager to bring on the ‘end times’ or radical Islamists with a hatred of the West?
In mythology, Ra Egypt’s sun god, hurled an execration upon a rebellious humankind and, in a hot rage, despatched the scorching Eye of Ra, a holocaust sun in the form of the goddess Sekhmet, to destroy them. A marauding lioness, her breath spread pestilence and plague and her claws and teeth death as she swept through Egypt in an orgy of killing. Then Ra had second thoughts and halted her apocalypse.
But the execration had been uttered and it was always feared that the inherently unstable agent of destruction – the Female Soul With Two Faces – would one day return to finish off what she had started, cleansing the earth.

Product Description
For the ancient Egyptians, the Middle Kingdom (c. 2000-1700 BC) was a classical period of art, history and literature. The Twelfth Dynasty was one of the strongest ever to rule on the banks of the Nile: some of its kings were later worshipped as local gods, and were made famous by classical Greek authors. Yet Egyptologists tend not to look beyond the extraordinary royal sculpture and literary masterpieces of the time. Although the picture is fragmentary, as with any archaeological record, the last two hundred years of exploration and excavation have revealed much of the splendor of the period. This book examines the evidence for the culture, history and society of both central and provincial Egypt at the time, revealing the wealth of the entire country. Too often overshadowed by the better-preserved architecture of other periods, Middle Kingdom Egypt emerges for the reader as a fascinating age in its own right. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A thorough account.
Middle Kingdom Egypt is less well known than the other periods but author Grajetski gives the most thorough account of every aspect of life during this important transitional time, including Pharaohs and Dynasties, important officials, details of the life of the common people, archaeological sites, etc.He leaves no stone unturned and mines the data with great detail.I particularly loved his compendium on the nomes of ancient Egypt and their important Middle Kingdom population centers from Aswan to the Delta with commentary on temples and tombs found in each. This book left me with a much richer appreciation for the whole of Egyptology. A most enjoyable read if you are fascinated with life in Ancient Egypt!I would be sure to take it along on a tour up the Nile.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Middle Kingdom - Unappreciated Glory

Many books have been written about Ancient Egypt. However, most of them cover either the Old Kingdom - that is the Pyramid Age, or the New Kingdom- the great Pharoahs like Thutmose III, Hatshepsut, Amenhotep III, Akhnaton and Rameses the Great.
This book is a comprehensive history of this underappreciated period in Egyptian history - the 11, 12th&13th dynasties.
The book starts with brief, concise summaries of the reign of each of the Pharoahs of the period, such as Montuhotep, and Amenemhet and Senusret, as well as summaries of the mysterious 13th dynasty, which is usually completely ignored in the history books.
Then the book starts in the South of Egypt, and works its way north, region ( called Nomes in Egyptian history) by region, summarizing all of the remains that can be found in this region which date to the Middle Kingdom.
Then the books concludes with a section on Egyptian society, including material on the King and his court, and some of the towns like Lahun.
This is a comprehensive, welcome addition to an armchair Egyptologists library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A detailed and scholarly textual analysis that paints a vivid picture of a noble nation-state's vibrant past
The Middle Kingdom of Ancient Egypt by Wolfram Grajetzki explores the era of the Middle Kingdom (2000-1700 BC), including its art, history, literature, the political achievements of the powerful Twelfth Dynasty, and the evidence modern archaeology has revealed about the culture, history, and society of provincial Egypt. 47. Dogs in Antiquity: Anubis to Cerbrus the Origins of the Domestic Dog (Egyptology)

Product Description
Using new genetic research and the material from excavations, 'Anubis to Cerberus' first examines the archaeological evidence for the origins of the dog and the process of domestication in prehistory. In historic times numerous tomb-paintings and artifacts from Egypt and the Middle East depict dogs hunting, herding, guarding and simply as pets. Dogs represented gods in Egypt, Mesopotamia and Greece, and their archaeological remains have been recovered in cult centers. These records show the development of specialized breeds during the first great civilizations. In the Graeco-Roman period a new dimension to the story is added: technical literature about rearing, training and special uses of the dog.

Lavishly illustrated, this book combines the latest scientific material with a cultural history to tell the developing story of the inter-relationship between man and dog from its origin in remote antiquity to that which we know today. It will be invaluable for archaeologists wishing to identify dogs and canid remains, for zoologists tracing the history of the species and fascinating for anyone who has a serious interest in the history of the dog and the origins of modern breeds. ... Product Description
The volume provides an in-depth study of an architectural ensemble that consists of an open court and elevated chapel, better known as the wabet, and forms an essential part of the layout of a dozen temples in Egypt of the Thirtieth Dynasty and the Ptolemaic and Roman era (e.g Philae, Edfu, Dendara, Shanhur, and Deir Shalwit). The volume focuses on the ensemble's location, orientation, and layout, the designations in use to refer to the complex, and the decorative scheme applied to its walls in order to gain a better insight into the activities performed in the complex and its role within the temple. The volume also takes a closer look at various plausible precursors of the complex in temples of the New Kingdom and the Late Period and examines the ensemble's relation to the wabet as a 'place of embalming'. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great dictonary
Hard to find good dictonaries. This one is a classic and a "must have" for finding most common words.
I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars better than expected
I hesitated to buy this because other reviews mentioned that the text was handwritten, and there isno english to egyptian section, butin the end I bought it because I wanted a reliable hieroglyphic dictionary--I'm glad I went ahead and got it, it only takes a moment to get used to the handwriting, and this dictionary makes a nice adjunct to learning the languageIt includes many more sophisticated words than are found in the teaching texts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise Dictionary of Middle Egyptian
This is a great dictionary for Egyptian, set out well. Although it is confusing at first due to the fact that it is handwritten, it is the most complete dictionary that I know of.

2-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
I'm sure that this book would be as wonderful as everyone else here says it is - if i already spoke middle Egyptian or was sitting in Egypt, translatingpassages off of temple walls. However, as a student sitting in Los Angeles, trying to self-teach themselves...

My main problem with this book is a complete lack of an English - Egyptian index. The words listed are organized by first glyph - but the beginning glyphs themselves are not organized in any way that I could see. Certainly not by stroke count or anything logical like that.

Next - and this has been touched on by others - the entire book except for a few pages of preface is written in a pseudo-scripted font (not even a simple copy of Faulkner's handwriting, which would have probably been preferable) that is exceedingly hard to read. Not even the glyphs are safe - they look as though they were copied-and-pasted from Faulkner's rather hastily jotted notes.

Finally, the book seems to have been published in a half-baked state. Not only is it in this aforementioned font, which any serious editing would have gotten rid of, and not only does it miss an included English-Egyptian index, but the preface and epilogue have a list of additions and addendums that he meant to put in! Doesn't it seem like it might have been a good idea to add those before publication?

Unfortunately, this seems to be pretty much the only book of its type out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Faulkner's dictionary is a useful resource
Studying Middle Egyptian, Faulkner's dictionary is a must, specially in those cases where you cannot get your hands on the Wörterbuch, which is the essential dictionary for any serious student of the Middle Egyptian language. The handwriting may be annoying and seem oldfashioned in this day and age, but after some practicing, it is not that hard to decipher Faulkner's glyphs. I've definitely seen worse.

There are references to all the words, so that you can check the ancient source and see where Faulkner found it. But you need to have at least a basic knowledge of Middle Egyptian and to know how to transliterate Middle Egyptian glyphs, otherwise this dictionary is a waste of your money.

Still, you should never, ever buy any books by Budge. Not if you want to be a serious student of the Ancient Egyptian language! ... Read more

Clay was used for a myriad of functions in ancient Egypt, of which one of the most important was the production of pottery vessels. The manufacture of pottery has a history of over five thousand years in ancient Egypt. This book concentrates on that from the time of the first pharaohs, approximately 3000BC, to the conquest by Alexander the Great in 332 BC.Pottery was used for vessels that served a wide variety of functions, including everyday cooking and domestic purposes. While the majority of the pottery from ancient Egypt is plain and utilitarian, potters decorated vessels with elaborate designs incorporating a wide range of motifs and produced numerous types of 'fancy forms' such as vessels in the form of humans, animals and birds.Using information drawn from such diverse sources as tomb reliefs and inscriptions, as well as the large amount of pottery from pharaonic Egypt that survives today, this book examines the techniques of pottery manufacture, types of decorationand the function of pottery in that society. ... Product Description
Living in the past is the phenomenon that underlies this study, which focuses on the causes of the Egyptian archaizing spirit that reached its climax under the Saite 26th Dynasty (664-525 BC), resurrecting elements from earlier stages of Egyptian civilization. These elements, which had long fallen out of use (hence the term "archaism" rather than "tradition" or "continuity") include everything from earlier stages of the language to artistic styles and motifs, and to funerary practices. Both royal and private documents are analyzed, as the book attempts to answer the "why" of the archaizing movement in general by concentrating on the "how", that is, the mechanism of the written historical and biographical sources. Part 1 covers general questions concerning Saite archaism as a whole. Part 2 provides a grammatical analysis of both the royal and private texts in the corpus, including a morphological attempt to organize the verbal system of Saite secular Egyptian. Part 3 allows a detailed look at the royal historical stelae of Dynasty 26.Eight royal historical stelae are gathered for the first time with exhaustive critical apparatus including new photographs, fascimile drawings, computer-generated hieroglyphic copies for textbook use, transliteration, translation and commentary. ... Product Description
Any person with an interest in the history of Egyptology quickly learns of the monumental Description de l'Egypte, a result of research undertaken by French scholars during Napoleon's invasion of Egypt in 1798. The starting point for this study is the long-standing belief, particularly visible in English literature, that this nineteenth-century French corpus was the first point in the development of Egyptology. Yet despite this oft-repeated belief, the issues of where exactly the work went, or what people made of it have yet to be explored. This book attempts to test the broad notion that the Description was the seminal point in the development of Egyptology by exploring its reception in Great Britain, in the early nineteenth century. ... Product Description
During the 14th century, even as Egypt faced troubling challenges to her empire, the most basic structures of society suddenly came under attack from an unexpected quarter - the pharoah himself. Amenhotep IV (c. 1353-1336 B.C.), both god-king and high priest of all the gods in the Nile Valley, acted against all precendent by withdrawing his support from the orthodox religion. In place of Egypt's many traditional divinities, he promoted an entirely new form of the Sun God embodied in the solar orb "Aten", a hitherto minor figure in the pantheon. When the king decided to break with the past, he changed his name to Akhenaten and established for his god a new cult center on virgin ground in Middle Egypt. To define the site of Akhet-Aten ("Horizon of Aten"), the king commissioned a number of glorified frontier markers the boundary stelae. These were imposing monuments that symbolically established the royal presence, by means of statues and reliefs depicting the royal family, and preserved for posterity the decrees which had initiated the city's foundation. The 15 known boundary monuments of Akhenaten were discovered in the two decades that bridged the 19th and 20th centuries, but they were incompletely served by the pioneering publications that first made them known. The authors, both well-known Egyptologists, worked at El-Amarna from 1983 to 1989, making fresh copies of the inscriptions and studying the sites of the stelae themselves. The results of their investigations, which are published here, include a definitive new edition of the texts with modern translations, together with a wide-ranging analysis of the history which inspired and is reflected in these monuments. ... Product Description
This monograph represents the first comprehensive investigation of the characteristically crude wooden "stick" shabtis of the late 17th and early 18th Dynasties. Developed from a case study of examples in the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology and building upon scholarship that has until now focussed almost exclusively on the importance of their inscriptions, the work offers new perspectives on stick shabtis and their role in the cultic milieu during a transitional period in ancient Egyptian history. The broad based analysis draws upon excavation reports, archival material and a comparative examination of the physical characteristics of stick shabtis in the Petrie Museum and from other collections, in order to challenge the generally held view that besides their inscriptions these simple figures are little more than, to quote Flinders Petrie, "mere scraps of rough wood". The book is profusely illustrated throughout and incorporates a detailed catalogue of stick shabtis in the Petrie Museum as well as a number of previously unpublished examples from public and private collections. ... Product Description
Theodore M. Davis's discovery of the tomb of Horemheb (Harmhabi) on February 22, 1908 was his last great find in the Valley of the Kings - a vast, finely cut tomb containing the king s superb hardstone sarcophagus, a mass of fragmented burial furniture and abundant skeletal remains. The tomb's wall decorations, in various stages of completion, are among the finest in Egypt. The Tombs of Harmhabi and Touatânkhamanou was Davis's swansong, published three years before his death. Besides his report on the Horemheb find, it includes an account of what Davis supposed - mistakenly - to be the destroyed burial of Tutankhamun (Touatânkhamanou). The volume is abundantly illustrated with photographs and watercolour sketches of the tomb, its decorated walls and the objects found, together with some of the best views of the Valley of the Kings ever taken ...
