Book Description
The Standard Handbook of Electronics Engineering has defined its field for over thirty years. Spun off in the 1960’s from Fink’s Standard Handbook of Electrical Engineering, the Christiansen book has seen its markets grow rapidly, as electronic engineering and microelectronics became the growth engine of digital computing. The EE market has now undergone another seismic shift—away from computing and into communications and media. The Handbook will retain much of its evergreen basic material, but the key applications sections will now focus upon communications, networked media, and medicine—the eventual destination of the majority of graduating EEs these days. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars You Must Have This Book on Your Desk
This book is truely a "must have" on your desk or your book-case. While it is a very weighty volume and the pages are just a tab bit thinner then thety shoudl be it does make for a decent text on the subject matter, although the publishers would do well to break it into 5 or 6 thinner volumes in a better binding and better paper.

The CD is a real asset as you can drop the entire book into your laptop for ready reference when away from the office along with a dozen similar CD's.

All around this is a must have book for any electronics engineer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Vital Resource with all the Information on the Field of Electronic Engineering
This edition of the "Standard Handbook of Electronic Engineering" is the most comprehensive, authoritative reference you will find in the shelves.

This book has all the information you will ever need on Electronic Engineering and related fields. Each topics was written by foremost authorities in their respective fields, limiting mathematical derivation in favor of useful bottom line expressions, stressing references hat are broadly informative rather than those that may be to arcane. The resulting work is intended to be practical rather than tutorial. Nevertheless, while applications and cost considerations are emphasized throughout, theory is included when is deemed to be helpful to comprehension.

This handbook will be useful to a wide range of readers, from undergraduate electrical and computer engineering students, to new graduates and experienced practitioners. Anyone who need quick access to a definition, mathematical expression, or like in my case, any working engineer who may need access to application information related to problems you may be experiencing, or to a new project you think you may be assigned to.

Definitively a must have for anyone related to the field of electronic, electrical or computer engineering. I am an Electronics Engineer, and I has been an industrial practitioner working for the last 16 years in the process industries. I have found this handbook, and its previous versions to be really useful many times.

As an invaluable bonus, you get the CD-ROM which includes 200+ extra pages of in-depth reference and archival material ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Book
This book is full of errors and the subject matter presentation is far from an introduction. I used this in an intro class and it was one of the most useless textbooks I have ever bought. If it is a required book, do yourself a favor and buy some additional reading material.

1-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete and full of errors
I found this book to be difficult to follow due to lack of examples and meandering subject matter. The author seems to have problems focusing directly on the topic at hand. What examples do exist have errors, which is enough to confuse any student. The difficulty of the end of chapter problems is a bit tough at points which is confounded by the lack of provided solutions. the book has 0 solutions with a promise that 20% of the problems are solved online.Instead, what is found on line are hand scribbled answers with no explination. This book is a work in progress at best.

1-0 out of 5 stars Yeah, maybe if I already had a degree...
This book is very tough for someone just starting Electrical Engineering to understand. The book reqires a lot of previous subject matter knowledge that can be very frustrating if you don't have it.The mathematical derivations of the equations are somewhat choppy and skip many steps. Also, the problems at the end of each chapter are extremely difficult compared to what was taught in each chapter. ... This comprehensive revision of a popular text helps non-electrical engineering majors--the future users, rather than the designers of electrical devices, systems, and machines--gain a conceptual understanding of electrical engineering.Early coverage of systems and an emphasis on an IC (integrated circuits) "building block" approach motivates non-majors. The text features integration of analog and digital technology with cutting-edge coverage of op-amps, feedback and analog systems. 3-0 out of 5 stars awful and awesome
This book is awful because it is very hard to read when you are first exposed to electrical engineering field. It's even worst when you are a freshman does not have the patience to peruse the book. Too much material, nothing interesting... basically you are just flipping V=IR around for the whole course (really boring.) It will discourage students studying electrical engineering as it did for me.

Fast forward, 7 years later when you have forgotten everything about EE or something like current flow through a diode; it's an excellent book to look up for that. The book is really really easy to read after you have taken other upper and graduate EE classes or design real circuits. It's a light easy book to read to refresh some FUNDAMENTAL concepts.... but then that is defeating the purpose of an "INTRODUCTION" book. Look at other books like Allan R. Hambley or arts of electronics (this is more pratical) as alternative books.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is certainly not "An Introduction"
If you are a novice EE student, never buy this book. This is not an introduction in the sense we usually think. In a word, terrible!

1-0 out of 5 stars Most Horrible Textbook Ever
I used this book in my sophomore year Intro to EE class and it has to be the most horribly written technical textbook ever. I read from the book only once the whole semester and spent the rest of the time learning from tutors and lecture notes. The examples are cryptic and poorly explained and the chapters are haphazardly organized. I pity those who're forced to buy this for their EE classes, but if you have a choice, you can definitely find yourself a much better textbook than this piece of junk.

1-0 out of 5 stars Something is missing
I'm a retired EE and having other textbooks in my library on this subject I would conclude that this is not an easy book to follow, certainly not as an introduction to second year engineering students. For example, the write up on higher-order circuits is just too superficial and left too large a gap to follow up into the examples or homework in my opinion. This treatment of subject areas seems to be the norm rather than the exception. This book is not incomplete and has many classical examples but it's just difficult to follow. There are better books. Its probably best to have other references in hand such as Schaum's, Charles M. Close, Ralph J. Smith, Johnson/Hilburn/Johnson and a good set of class notes to fill in between the gaps.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hard to follow, ...
This book is to hard to follow, with bad examples and explaining things so you can't tell what is going on. I hate this book. My advice to you is if you are taking a class that is using this book, get another book to use because this book is worthless. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Junior level college text
The first 6 chapters cover the basics of analyzing RLC networks.Chapters7 thru 10 give a good introduction to semiconductor devices, amplifiers, and analog signal processing.Chapters 11 and 12 are a way too briefcoverage of digital electronics (and is fast becoming dated material). Chapters 13 to 16 cover the basic concepts of magnetic circuits, AC motors, etc.Chapter 17 is a hodge podge introduction to some advancedmaterial.

The text requires/uses basic calculus and complex numbers. There are lots of examples to explain each concept as it is introduced. The circuit analysis techniques developed in the first 5 chapters will beused throughout the students career. These chapters are very well laidout, leading the student along from one basic point to the next in alogical manner, and make this an excellent textbook. The sections onsemiconductor devices and amplifiers are a little dated, but still coverbasic relevant information. An example of where the text is dated is inthe section on two-port networks which does not even mention S-parametercircuit models. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Bentley's Book is great for understanding Power Theory
I am a control/electronics engineer.I took the PE exam and failed it the first time.My problem was that I did not understand electrical power (generation, distribution, power factor correction, etc.).The electrical PE exam is dominated by these types of problems.Digital Logic and electronics only represent a few of the problems on the exam, and understanding those types of problems alone will not allow you pass it.Bentley's book does an excellent job explaining power.I scored 67 the first time I took the exam. After working with this book for two days, I took the exam again and scored much higher (94 I think it was).

2-0 out of 5 stars It's ok
If you are looking for a book that will help you on the afternoon electrical specific portion of the FE (or EIT) don't get this book.it helps alot with the morning session and gives alot of good ideas on being prepared and ready for the exam in general, but not alot on the afternoon portion

5-0 out of 5 stars A Guide to the Test and to the Material it Covers
The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Examination is also known as the Engineer In Training (EIT) Exam, and the Engineer Intern (EI) Exam. It is a national exam but administered by individual states. The exam covers the general base of engineering knowledge in the morning session and then one of seven engineering specialties in the afternoon.

This book covers the morning session topics, but concentrates on the electrical (and to some extent the computer) engineering test. It is a quick sommary of how you are going to be tested in the format of questions similar to those on the exam, followed by the procedure to answer the question, after that is a trial test with only the answers provided instead of the whole procedure.

In addition the book has a lot of hints that make good sense, i.e. take two calculators to the test just in case one quits, is stolen, or whatever.

And one particularly good piece of advice:

Set your wristwatch alarm for five minutes before the end of each four-hour session, and use that remaining time to guess at all the remaining unsolved problems. Do not work up until the very end. You will be successful with about 25 percent of your guesses (each question has four possible answers), and these points will more than make up for the few points you might earn by working during the last five minutes.

That's good sense, and it shows that the author understands how the test is going to be graded. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good resource
A bit pricey and the questions are not completely representative, but I still found it to be useful in getting me back into problem-solving. I didn't use it as a time-saver, but simply as additional questions to use in my preparation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not particularly useful
Note that its a pretty slim book for the price. The questions and answers are complete, but not very representative of what I found on the test. The solutions also slog through the textbook method when there are (semi) obvious shortcuts that could have been pointed out.Not useful as a reference; I never opened it during the exam (an index might have helped). If you really go through and work all the problems it would still be a pretty good review though.

4-0 out of 5 stars An ok book
So I bought this book and it is pretty decent, but I was not too impressed with the price. It is very expensive for a soft-cover 72 page book.I should have looked at the number of pages, but for the price, I expected more.Nevertheless, I recommend this book because the problems seem to be well-choosen and the book well written.

5-0 out of 5 stars Six-Minute Solutions for Electrical and Computer PE Exam Problems
It is a good source for preparing PE Exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent practice for the Exam
This book is an excellent study guide and reference during the exam. The questions are very similar to the actual exam in terms of level of difficulty, format, and language. If you can work through this book, the Sample Exam by the same author, and the NCEES Sample Exam, you will have no problem with the exam.

The book uses familiar examples, like water flowing through a garden hose, to illustrate the electronics discussed and ease the reader into the subject.Topics include up-to-date Internet information; new material on micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS); digital electronics; computer architecture; communications; and digital signal processing. Short, one-page templates are included for the different kinds of technical writing an engineer would typically produce. As a reference for electrical engineers. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Should be entitled If You Don't Want To Learn A Thing About Electronics
It may be good to look over briefly if you have never heard of a resistor, but other than that it is a horribly laid out book. The chapters are incredibly short and nondescriptive, leaving much to be desired. A chapter consists of about 2 pages of text and 4 pages of problems where one is supposed to derive formulas for resistors in parallel and other annoying problems that would be far easier to understand from even the most basic of physics books. No one should buy this book for any reason, as it doesn't teach you anything. The first 114 pages are useless babble about where the internet has brought us, a little about running a business(why? this is supposed to be about electronics.) and such. There has to be a better book out there.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for engineers...
This book is fine if you want a brief survey into the field, but not very useful for reference into "hardcore" electrical engineering. As it turns out, courses taught in Berkeley (including the freshman course) delve much deeper into the topics dicussed in the book, so buy other reference books if this is required as a textbook.

Also, the labs turned out to be quite challenging for the introductory course and the given level of knowledge, but exploring telephones, sound amplifiers, radios, and such were interesting.

For a casual reader interested in the field, this book will help you get a general idea of RC circuits, MOSFETs, transistors, inductors, and other EE components, but otherwise, you should reconsider.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Electronics for Dummies"
This book provides a nice overview for not-yet-geekie types, like yours truly.I especially like the analogies of electricity to water flow, which -- as a chemical engineer -- is how I've tried to envision the "juice" for years. The authors do have quite a few chapters off-the-subject of electricity, apparently in an effort to enrich the understanding and skills of the readers.I didn't buy the book for this, but it's somewhat interesting and helpful. At $50 for a paperback, this book is not for the casual reader or Holiday gift-giving. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor substitute for the Real Manual.Don't bother.
This Quick Reference is a poor substitute for the real Reference Manual. The publishers suggestion is that you study from the real Reference Manual, and then use this "quick reference" to work problems and take the exam. That's a very poor idea.Once you know a reference book, stick with it.

One significant shortcoming of this book is that it is not "tabbed" like the real Reference Manual, so trying to find the section you're looking for takes longer than finding it in the comprehensive manual.Bottom line is that this Quick Refernce is nothing more than a list of formulas, and it will not be much help on the exam.I think the reason the publisher put this book together was for an "add-on" sale or for people who wouldn't shell out for the real manual. You need the real manual... skip this one.

See my review under the Reference Manual for recommendations from someone who just took the exam.

Book Description
The first edition of this title proved the most successful of the Portable Handbook series launched in 1999. Aimed at electrical engineers and technicians working in building power systems, the relentlessly practical Handbook succeeded as an in the field working tool. This new edition is necessitated by the new 2002 version of the National Electrical Code (NEC). This code changes render much of the existing material obsolete, so over half the chapters require heavy rewrites to stay current. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Well, It IS Portable
This is a good collection of useful information in compact form. I like the old tables that are missing in newer editions of the NEC. When odering this book, be sure to get a good magnifying glass. Lots of 3 pt text here.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thomas E. Robinson
Good reference source for electrical power-related engineering work. However, would be good if it had current National Electrical Code info instead of the previous NEC revision. This is my only complaint.

4-0 out of 5 stars Electricial Engineers Portable Handbook
I have found this book to be very helpful for the electricial industry. There is much information available which can only be found by using many other publicatons or information available only from the manufactor of theequipment. It covers services, and grounding of electricial systems. Italso covers fire protection systems, motors and lighting. There are manycharts and graphs in the book. I would recommend this book for anyone inthe electricial field. ... Read more
