5-0 out of 5 stars Machinery Fundamentals (chapman)
There's not much to say when a book is adequate. The material is, for the most part, clearly laid out and understandable.
I purchased this for a course, but we only got to cover a small portion of the book.Reading ahead, it's easy enough to understand the book without supplemental lecture (which is not always the case with some texts).

I'd probably rather purchased the hardback if i'd known i'd be keeping it for reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars happy I purchased it.
Ordered this book for a class and got it in enough time to stay on track. Was a little shocked to see that such a little book cost so much but if you need it you need it.So far I also like the book. One of the few I am excited about keeping after finishing the class.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre for class, not bad for a reference
I actually taught a junior level class from this book. I didn't like it for teaching. It felt like I was doing Electric Machinery Details, not Fundamentals.Curiously, my copy of this book has been floating around work for awhile now, and gets used quite often...mostly because it does have lots of details. Between this book and the Shaum's outline for electric power systems, it seems to get almost everything done.

In short, if you could pick this book up for cheap (say below $40-$50), then I'd consider it.Otherwise I think you can collect a few other books out there out of the used sections and get the same job done.

Just as a matter of record, I think more than $100 for any book is just plain outrageous (and I won't pay it).So you can use that as a gauge for how much this book is worth to you.

2-0 out of 5 stars A disappointment
This book (4/ed) seems like a first draft that has since been expanded (copy&paste) and reorganized but never actually finalized. For instance, the order of presention of DC and AC machinery has been reversed since the 1st ed., but regrettably the AC material now placed first uses concepts introduced much later. The first two or three chapter are decent, but then the book falls apart, becoming more of a flawed summary of various machineries.

There are numerous errors throughout; while these on their own do not significantly degrade the quality, they do reflect that little effort has been made since the first edition. The text feels superfical; it leaves very few traces of either true commitment to teaching or of genuine interest in fundamental concepts from the author. (Had the author cut down on the amount of material covered, he'd be in a better position to improve his presentation of the fundamentals in future editions.)

Fitzgerald's classic Electric Machinery (6/ed) eloquently presents fundamental concepts and is better in all aspects, including the narrative.

2-0 out of 5 stars Alot of general info but not much specific
Book gives a broad overview of substations, but not very detailed. If you have anything more than a passing interesting how substations work this book will not be much use to you. I started a new job as a commisioner and this book was of little benefit to me. Not enough details on the inner workings of power protection and switchgear.

4-0 out of 5 stars Electric power substations engineering
I bought this book because I found drafting job in electric company. My previous knowledge about substations was less than general, so I have to learn this stuff. This book helped me to learn everithing I need. It is detailed and easy to understad. Good thing is that author show schematicaly some segments of substation and because of that it is much easier to understand it's purpose.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended! Compact Yet Highly Charged with Information
This book is very concise and yet a powerhouse of very good information. This is the book to be read first to get the overall picture on power substation engineering quickly and precisely, without overwhelming yourself on the subject.I wish I had this book ten years back :)

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for both substation and equipment engineering
(Zhu Fang, Dr. & P.Eng., Ontario, Canada)

This book outlines the physics and logic behind the relevant IEEE standards. So it helps to understand and application of these standards in engineering work. As working on power transformer engineering, I find that this book enriches and updates my background knowledge on application of power equipments. It is ideal for electric power engineering professional and student who wishes to know more about engineering practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Really Good Book!
This book is a good practical book. It helps me clearly understand some concepts and applications. It is a really good source and I use it all the time at work!
I will definitely recommend this book ! ... Read more

Product Description
Concern over the effects of airborne pollution, green house gases, and the impact of global warming has become a worldwide issue that transcends international boundaries, politics, and social responsibility. The 2nd Edition of Coal Energy Systems: Clean Coal Technology describes a new generation of energy processes that sharply reduce air emissions and other pollutants from coal-burning power plants.

Coal is the dirtiest of all fossil fuels. When burned, it produces emissions that contribute to global warming, create acid rain, and pollute water. With all of the interest and research surrounding nuclear energy, hydropower, and biofuels, many think that coal is finally on its way out. However, coal generates half of the electricity in the United States and throughout the world today. It will likely continue to do so as long as it's cheap and plentiful [Source: Energy Information Administration]. Coal provides stability in price and availability, will continue to be a major source of electricity generation, will be the major source of hydrogen for the coming hydrogen economy, and has the potential to become an important source of liquid fuels. Conservation and renewable/sustainable energy are important in the overall energy picture, but will play a lesser role in helping us satisfy our energy demands today. Dramatically updated to meet the needs of an ever changing energy market, Coal Energy Systems, 2nd Edition is a single source covering policy and the engineering involved in implementing that policy. The book addresses many coal-related subjects of interest ranging from the chemistry of coal and the future engineering anatomy of a coal fired plant to the cutting edge clean coal technologies being researched and utilized today. A 50% update over the first edition, this new book contains new chapters on processes such as CO2 capture and sequestration, Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) systems, Pulverized-Coal Power Plants and Carbon Emission Trading.
Existing materials on worldwide coal distribution and quantities, technical and policy issues regarding the use of coal, technologies used and under development for utilizing coal to produce heat, electricity, and chemicals with low environmental impact, vision for utilizing coal well into the 21st century, and the security coal presents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introductory book for antennas!
This is a great introductory book for antennas. It balances both qualitative and quantitative analysis and provides very helpful illustrations for developing a complete understanding of the material. I would recommend this textbook for seniors or first year grad students that have already had some basic exposure to antenna theory and related material

4-0 out of 5 stars Detailed and readable, easy explanations
I was pleased when I started into Balanis' tome. The text was readable, detailed enough to follow with good math and standard symbology. He covers just about everything, but suggest further readings if you want to go into depth in a topic. For example, he does not cover large loops where the current is not constant. That is a topic with several decades of work behind it that I wish he had summarized better, though he did try some; he left it blank for the most part.

He has very good references and suggestions for further reading throughout.

1-0 out of 5 stars If you want to learn antenna theory, do NOT buy this CD
The 'text' of this 'book' is a collection of PowerPoint slides with nearly no details on to how to understand the equations or diagrams. To me its for the trash -- a complete waste of money and time.I do not speak here to the MATLAB or FORTARN programs provided here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Standard
As a finishing EE undergrad going straight to grad school, having worked with antenna design for a few years, this book is standard. To be sure, it's not for those without a strong EE/physics background.I studied EM (through his other book) first and would recommend this approach. The math isn't particularly intimidating here, especially with the general lack of treatment of topics like scattering and more advanced details of the smart antenna chapter.Fine for senior undergrads and grad students.

It feels designed to be both a teaching and reference text.In other words, some sections (the beginning, like wire antennas) have decent derivations in place but most have a lot of practical knowledge. The inclusion of MATLAB programs is nice on the CD - obviously this book won't come with HFSS or CST-MWS.There are still many approximations and tables provided so you can do a quick and dirty hand design before verifying it in simulations. The coverage is enough to be a good general reference for a designer or student - you can look up the chapter on patches and have a general understanding of it, with design equations for some simplified cases, for instance. If you want a book more focused on teaching, Kraus is very good and I think does a bit better job of holding one's hand.Balanis is better for the breadth of topics and it's a good book to have if you can only have one - a jack of all trades.Of course, if you're an antenna designer you probably know this already and if you need it for a class you won't regret buying it.There's a reason this book has >20 reviews even on Amazon.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but damaged

Product Description
Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a relatively new medical imaging method and its unique portability, safety and low cost suggest it could provide an important imaging modality with a range of applications. These factors have excited interest in a broad range of disciplines, including mathematicians interested in uniqueness proofs and inverse problems; physicists interested in bioimpedance; and electronic engineers and clinicians involved in developing and extending its applications.

Divided into four parts; Algorithms, Hardware, Applications and New Directions this book, with contributions from leading international researchers, provides an up-to-date review of the story of the development of EIT, the present state of knowledge, and a look at future developments and applications. An overview of the related and more exploited research area, industrial process tomography, included. All authors have been encouraged to draw conclusions from their experience and make recommendations, positive or negative, for future directions in development and research.

Given the interdisciplinary nature of the subject, two introductory non-technical appendices have been included for readers of any background to provide a brief and simple introduction to bioimpedance and the methods of EIT; and each chapter has been written in a style comprehensible to all target readers regardless of background. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Most Comprehensive Electrical Engineering Text on the Market
Mega kudos to Mr. John Camara for authoring an excellent reference text.Whether you are a seasoned electrical engineer or an out-of-your-element Naval Architect, this book will guide you through the exciting world of electrons.

I recommend this book to all engineers regardless of specific discipline.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book helped me pass the Electrical PE - not as bad as reviews
This book was an extremely helpful resource in the exam.It is well written and covers a wide range of material.I agree with some of the previous reviews. The book is quite large and the organization can be a bit clunky, especially for someone studying for the Electrical and Electronics exam, where material is scattered throughout the book. But there were a few questions that showed up on the exam as wildcards and I was able to quickly solve them using this book.I recommend placing color-coded tabs at each section that is relevant to your particular exam discipline.I found that having a single reference with tabbed pages was quite useful.I would like to have seen more examples in this book.Yet I assume the accompanying Sample Exam book contains a wide range of examples.I definitely give credit to this book in helping me pass the exam.In the end, this is not the best reference book that I have ever read, but it helped me pace my studying and it is the best comprehensive book that I have found on the market.Unfortunately study materials have not kept up with the new PE exam format. If you are truly dedicated in studying over a few months for the PE exam, purchase this book and you won't go wrong. As a note, I also chose the Kaplan PE Electrical and Electronics Review book and accompanying Sample Exam. Those books are not nearly as well written as the PPI book, but again the resources for the new EE PE exam are limited and the Kaplan books, while in need of a proof-edit, are a good complement to the PPI book.I would recommend all three books for the serious reviewer.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a PE exam material
I can reduce the size of this book by 75% and still accomplish 100% of what it does. I'll ask for around $10 for this crappy book.

The author is probably inclined into displaying his cut-copy-paste skills more than actually taking the time to walk through the concepts.

If you take my advice, buy the following. 1) Kaplan review book 2) Gringer for power system analysis 3) NEC code book 4) some basic books for circuit analysis (shaums series will suffice).

Advice from a person who failed because I used Camera's book for studying. I learnt a lot, probably to do a PhD .. not PE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handbook of Practical Design
I work for a major electrical contractor, and the project I am working on is in the 500 million dollar catagory. This project is re-modeling a major government facility with multi-tennant and varied design projects within the whole project. This project is design build and fast track. This Handbook is extremely valuable especially when used in conjunction with the McGraw hill electrical code handbook. Anyone working on such a project should have this book, believe me it is excelent!

1-0 out of 5 stars Handbook of Practical Electrical Design
The McGraw-Hill cover misrepresents this book.It may preach to the choir but makes no converts. Concepts are long, obscure or ignored. The print is tight and some tables are not legible in places. The reader will learnlittle.Pedagogy is not the authors' strength. Having learned the basicsof electricity in school I hoped for some of what the publisher promises, but was very dissappointed and 60 bucks poorer.Avoid my mistake. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor book for students
This book does an OK job up to about the 5th chapter. After that point, the exercises at the end of each chapter get considerably more difficult.Up until that point, the assignable problems and the sample problems in each chapter are very similar in terms of difficulty.Once chapter 5 begins, the sample problems in the text are completely useless as for deriving the differential equations necessary to solve the assignable problems. The only sample problems given in chapter 5 and beyond are real simple "plug and chug" type examples compared to the difficult problems at the end of the chapters. It's like showing someone how 2x4s can be nailed together and then asking someone to build a skyscraper. No fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars On time, good condition
I was very glad not to have to miss any homework assignments; the book arrived on time and in pristine condition.Thank you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Student opinion of the book
I used this book in a junior level course, the 2nd class I took in nuclear engineering, and it is at best hit-or-miss. Concepts are mostly discussed clearly and comprehensively, most topics relevant to fission reactors are included in the book, with a strong emphasis on reactor physics and neutron & quantum physics(~65% of the book), though the section on quantum mechanics is superficial. Thermal-hydraulics, fuel reprocessing, isotope separation, radiation shielding and reactor safety/licensing/accidents also appear, including a brief discussion of non-American reactor designs. Health physics & fusion get almost no text. The formulas are riddled with typos-missing minus signs, exponents, etc., which make it hard to use as a reference book since the publisher hasn't published a list of corrections-my professor actually warned us against using formulas straight out of the book! Constants necessary to solve a problem sometimes won't appear anywhere in the book, and the reference tables in the back are only in English units, even though the book uses English & SI units in problems and mostly SI in examples-and there's no good reason to use English units in an engineering textbook. period. The book assumes mathematics through calculus III and Differential Equations, and the appendices do a bad job of explaining relevant topics in those areas. The only reason to buy this book is because no other book covers such a variety of topics in the field. Hamilton's Nuclear Reactor Analysis & Kazimi's Nuclear Systems vol.1 do a much better job at discussing reactor physics & thermal-hydraulics than this book, respectively, even though they are more expensive.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nuclear Engineering
For a book that is supposed to be an intro to nuclear engineering, it is very vague.
The questions in the homework are difficult to answer if the book is the only source we are using as a reference.

There are several typos through out the book.

Amazon was super fast delivering the book though...great service.

3-0 out of 5 stars An "Engineering" Text Without a Home
This could be a very useful book if it:

1. Had answers to at least selected problems (its usefulness as an independent text is rather curtailed by a junior engineer's ability to check his understanding)

2. More attention to actual engineering details (e.g. p31 bottom states,"There is little point to having a mathematical simulation that is accurate to 100 decimal places if the best display or plotting equipment is only accurate to +- 1%.")First, the rounding should be done at the END of the simulation not IN it if the limitation is in the display; second, 100 decimal places versus +- 1% is a careless confusion of units, not to mention the ambiguity of 1% in a display (to what scale or register length?).

I suppose it might be used as a text for an undergraduate or graduate course somewhere, but more likely it would be purchased by an engineer or scientist interested in modeling, and here the lack of answers is a real deficiency.

The demands of the book are small for a senior level electrical engineering course, and not severe for someone with a decent grounding in discrete and continuous mathematics including orthogonal transforms, linear algebra, calculus of several variables, and an introductory probability course.

There are several very good examples of models included, especially the TLM which makes the book worth the rather high price. (I say that as someone with degrees in electrical engineering and many, many hours of post graduate study in mathematics---thus, it may demand a little more of the readerthan I perceive) ...
