4-0 out of 5 stars Top of the class
This 4-volume set of paperback books provides a thorough and readable introduction to the science and practice of TEM (transmission electron microscopy). The text is divided into short, digestable sections, each accompanied by figures, graphs and plots. The equations are numerous, but well explained and presented with minimal derivations but full explanations. The books are divided into concise sections making it easy for the reader to find what he/she needs.Overall, a perfect textbook to learn about TEM, and as a reference for those more experienced in this field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seems like the best TEM book
Good for both beginners and advanced users. Easy to read and well organized. It looks like there are some mistakes in some equations but it is the best TEM book available.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to TEM
In the 70's and 80's the book by Hirsch et al. was the TEM reference tome, and Eddington's book the applications manual.

Time has marched on, and this book is the new replacement for both!

Carter and Williams wrote a very easy to read, yet well detailed, text and reference for TEM.They cover quite literally everything, in just the right level of detail for 1st or 2nd year grad students.

This book is the best way to get a quick grasp of TEM.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outsatnding textbook!
I find this book probably the best textbook in materials science I ever read. Not only the authors are experts in the field of microscopy, but they also succeeded in extremely difficult task to present the complicatedscience of electron microscopy in a simple (but not oversimplified!)language. The book covers all major aspects of transmission electronmicroscopy, and contains excellent illustrations. This book is certainly apriceless asset for students. It is recommended as one of thebest books at the beginning and intermediate level. If you are looking fora book to learn TEM, get this one, you will never regret! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent outline of SEM and X-Ray microanalysis
This book is a comprehensible review of principles and methods of SEM and X-ray microanalysis write in a single and elegant language. The authors avoid using mathematical formulas in the description and demonstration which turn it an atractive book to all scientists and even the beginners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book !!
This ought to be the dream book of those who do SEM imaging. The first half or say first five/six chapters are solely devoted to fundamentals of SEMs and the rest of the chapters are dealing generation of X-rays and concentrate on EDS. I have not yet finished reading this book. But certainly recommend to other SEM users to possess this book and read it as and when required.

There are lots of pictures and schematics for each descriptions. It is also useful for microscopist that want to learn more about different methods. I definitively recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent EM primer
I actually had the opportunity to receive instruction from Prof. Bozzola in both Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and acquired the book for those reasons. It is not common to find even a textbook with such well-detailed instructions from beginning level to advanced for a myriad of topics in the field.Of course, there is a very significant focus on biological applications, so some portions of the book are not entirely relevant to materials science folks like myself. This book covers the basics of optics, sample preparation, imaging, photography and film developing, and specifics about both TEMs and SEMs.This book is a very good investment for anyone intending to perform work with such instruments.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are learning EM you must have this book...
This is a great book for those entering the field of EM study. It takes you step by step through both SEM and TEM sample prep and analysis. It is packed with helpful pictures and diagrams. 5-0 out of 5 stars Its a Small World
The work that Ms. Breger present in her electrifying and illuminating book spans that twilight zone between photography made with purely aesthetic vision and imagery made for the purposes of scientific investigation. Formy part, if a type of imagery carries a wonderful vision and powerfulpresence no matter what precincts it hales from, it warrants serious andcritical attention.

Thephotographs in this book come from a visualrealm that roughly parallels Egerton, Nilsson, et al. It is work made witha Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM).

Whether or not you are familiarwith this imaging technology -- its processes and procedures are not allthat recondite, is not overly material as they are really not actually atissue.. The rendering though, is. The end product if done in the hands ofan expert, as Dee Breger has wide renown for being, is in a rich, etched --in effect, and extremely beguiling continuous-tone sharply scaledmonotone.

The photographs focus mainly on exo-skeletal microorganisms andorganic and inorganic microstructures. That's what you look at when youview one of these sorts of images -- and they are very arresting andstrangely alluring ones indeed. The identifiability of subject matter isnot in itself, I feel, the source of their quite haunting power. And, it isindeed arguable as to how critical the related data is, interesting as many, including myself, would find it.

The subject matter goes beyond namingand claiming. It is about the enigmatic nature of the fundamental, and theinchoate, the substrates of experience. Platonisn (Neo- & Oldo-), inone form or another, is the operant mode in this sort of representation. The subsuming issues are epistemological in addition to the esthetic andexperiential.

Photographically, Dee's antecedents, on one hand, might beBlossfeld and Regner-Patzch -- the Platonisn thing. And, other the otherhand, Weston and Strand (The thing itself -- the world being intrinsicallymore interesting that what anyone can say about it...). Strong resonancestoo with the archetypal inventories of the Bechers and the mysteriouslittle chthonic worlds of Chiarenza.

That's more than enough for thehigh falutin' stuff. I guess the brass tacks of the matter is that theseimages are point blankly speaking, striking They bear a drama, mystery andpresence thatdefinitely command the attention of both a generalinquisitive audience and those critically interested in photography, however unusual or unexpected its manifestation. ... Book Description

In a clear exposition this inspirational book shows the in situ three-dimensional morphology of cerebellar neurons, intracortical circuits and synaptic connections that underpin the functioning of cerebellar neurons in networks. It brings together in one volume a new view of the three-dimensional cytoarchitectonic arrangement of the cerebellar cortex.

The book shows the cerebellar extrinsic and intrinsic intracortical circuits formed by mossy and climbing fibers as exposed by the cryofracture methods. The high degree of lateral collateralization of these fibers is also displayed providing new insights on the information processing in the cerebellar cortex. Besides, field emission high resolution electron microscopy shows its potential contribution to the study of synaptic morphology. The concluding chapter deals with the contribution of scanning electron microscopy to cerebellar neurobiology.

This monograph is an authoritative survey and a must for anyone who is interested in the structure of the central nervous system. It will also appeal to an interdisciplinary audience who wants to learn more about electron microscopy and neurocytology.

Since it is like a photography, it shows external views not the section throughs but you get hundered times better understanding of the structures. just look at scanning electron picture examples in your typical cell books. This book is full of them and not just plain pictures but with some explanations similar to Histology books.

Book Description
Cryoelectron microscopy of biological molecules is among the hottest growth areas in biophysics and structural biology at present, and Frank is arguably the most distinguished practitioner of this art. CryoEM is likely over the next few years to take over much of the structural approaches currently requiring X-ray crystallography, because one can now get good and finely detailed images of single molecules down to as little as 200,000 MW, covering a substantial share of the molecules of greatest biomedical research interest. This book, the successor to an earlier work published in 1996 with Academic Press, is a natural companion work to our forthcoming book on electron crystallography by Robert Glaeser, with contributions by six others, including Frank. A growing number of workers will employ CryoEM for structural studies in their own research, and a large proportion of biomedical researchers will have a growing interest in understanding what the capabilities and limits of this approach are. ... Book Description

This book explains concepts of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and x-ray diffractometry (XRD) that are important for the characterization of materials. The third edition has been updated to cover important technical developments, including the remarkable recent improvement in resolution of the TEM. This edition is not substantially longer than the second, but all chapters have been updated and revised for clarity. A new chapter on high resolution STEM methods has been added. The book explains the fundamentals of how waves and wave functions interact with atoms in solids, and the similarities and differences of using x-rays, electrons, or neutrons for diffraction measurements. Diffraction effects of crystalline order, defects, and disorder in materials are explained in detail. Both practical and theoretical issues are covered. The book can be used in an introductory-level or advanced-level course, since sections are identified by difficulty. Each chapter includes a set of problems to illustrate principles, and the extensive Appendix includes laboratory exercises.
