I really enjoyed the book. It goes very well with Histology courses.It gives you feeling of three dimensional pictures of real cells like photography. Since it is like a photography, it shows external views not the section throughs but you get hundered times better understanding of the structures. just look at scanning electron picture examples in your typical cell books. This book is full of them and not just plain pictures but with some explanations similar to Histology books.

This is a fantastic visual reference book for anybody interested in microscopic and/or macroscopic anatomy. Most of the major systems are covered, although the tissue samples are usually taken from small mammals.The range of magnification is great, and provides the reader with a clearconcept of the structure and function of a given organ.

The modern electron microscope, as a result of recent revolutionary developments and many evolutionary ones, now yields a wealth of quantitative knowledge pertaining to structure, dynamics, and function barely matched by any other single scientific instrument. It is also poised to contribute much new spatially-resolved and time-resolved insights of central importance in the exploration of most aspects of condensed matter, ranging from the physical to the biological sciences. Whereas in all conventional EM methods, imaging, diffraction, and chemical analyses have been conducted in a static - time-integrated - manner, now it has become possible to unite the time domain with the spatial one, thereby creating four-dimensional (4D) electron microscopy. This advance is based on the fundamental concept of timed, coherent single-electron packets, or electron pulses, which are liberated with femtosecond durations. Structural phase transitions, mechanical deformations, and the embryonic stages of melting and crystallization are examples of phenomena that can now be imaged in unprecedented structural detail with high spatial resolution, and ten orders of magnitude as fast as hitherto. No monograph in existence attempts to cover the revolutionary dimensions that EM in its various modes of operation nowadays makes possible. The authors of this book chart these developments, and also compare the merits of coherent electron waves with those of synchrotron radiation. I discovered this book because it was referenced in a summary of the topic in Scientific American. I think the subject is important and fascinating. But after reading a few pages of the book, I decided regretfully that, as usual, before you can undertstand the latest scientific advances in any detail you have to master whole fields of science -- in this instance, optics and quantum physics. It's not the author's fault. He writes well, but there's no way to simplify the underlying prerequisites. (The annotated pictures in the Scientific American article did help to gain some notion of what's going on.)

For my taste, this book is the best introduction to Transmission Electron Microscopy that I have ever read.It is written at a higher level than Williams and Carter.This book is probably best suited to students with a B.S. in Physics.At the very least one should have benefited from a two semester undergraduate course on Modern Physics (including such things as solving the Schrodinger Equation for the Hydrogen atom) before tackling this book.I wish that a book like this had been out thirty years ago when I started learning TEM!This book does a very good job on two-beam theory and has truly wonderful dispersion surface diagrams.

Another excellent aspect of this book is its discussion of the Sturkey scattering matrix approach to modeling electron diffraction.Not only is the scattering matrix approach a good (and from my experience, often better) alternative to the numerical integration of the the Howie Whelan equations for simulating TEM images of extended defects, the author also shows how the scattering matrix approach can be used to derive Cowley-Moodie multislice theory.Indeed, the author's integration of these two different approaches to simulating TEM images, Howie-Whelan and multislice theory, within the context of the scattering matrix format, is extremely satisfying and illuminating!

The author also maintains a website of FORTRAN programs for download corresponding to the simulations described in the textbook.Furthermore, he is very forthcoming in providing guidance in finding the particular program that you are looking for.Even the source code is available for the perusal and use of the interested reader!

I took Prof. de Graef's class at CMU in 2001, and we used pre-prints of this text.Even in that mostly-finished form, it was excellent.It's only improved now that I have the finished, published form.

Although I found the mathematical formalism that makes up the middle of this book excessive, it is important for people who will be modelling TEM experiments.The remainder of the book, on TEM basics, operation, and image/SADP interpretation, are all excellent.

A brilliantly explained text containing extremely good applications, and above all, clear and well-referenced recipes. Most pitfalls in microscopy are the result of not following optimal processing conditions. After reading Dr. Hayat's present publication, there is no excuse for not following well-tested reliable protocols.

This Handbook is the most authoritative publication in the disciplines of microscopy, immunohistochemistry and antigen retrieval methods. It is expected to become a classic in teaching and research. This book should not be absent in your personal collection, as well at the library.

This book claims to be an "Introduction" to electron microscopy, but it is not. Instead, it is a general description of VERY SPECIFIC methods, such as high pressure freezing, electron probe X-ray microanalysis, types of immunolabeling and specific techniques for each cellular organelle. IT DOES NOT CONTAIN ANY GENERAL METHOD OF PRINCIPLE, such as common fixatives, staining methods or embedding resins, nor does it say anything about the physics of the microscope.

If you are really looking for an INTRODUCTION (and a very general one, for that matter) to biological electron microscopy, I would recommend Bozzola's and Russell's Electron Microscopy. It contains general principles of both types of electron microscopes, basic techniques for standard methods, and chapters on more specific methods, like immunocytochemistry, autoradiography and freeze methods. For better and in-depth information about specimen preparation, Hayat's Principles and Techniques of Electron Microscopy is the best book available, although it does not contain any information on the physical principles of the electron micrsocope.

However, if your subject of interest are the physical principles of the electron microscope (and you are a biologist), although a bit old, Sjöstrand's book Electron Microscopy of Cells and Tissues is a very good reference, as well as Wischnitzer's Introduction to Electron Microscopy and Meek's Practical Electron Microscopy for Biologists. ...
