Product Description
Major improvements in instrumentation and specimen preparation have brought SEM to the fore as a biological imaging technique. In FESEM, a field-emission cathode placed in the electron gun of a scanning electron microscope provides narrower probing beams and high electron energy. The result is improved spatial resolution and minimized sample charging and damage. Images produced are less destroyed and have a spatial resolution down to 1.5 nm, three to six times better than conventional SEM.Although this imaging technique has undergone tremendous developments, it is still poorly represented in the literature, limited to journal articles and chapter s in books. This comprehensive volume is dedicated to the theory and practical applications of FESEM in biological samples. It provides a comprehensive explanation of instrumentation, applications, and protocols, and is intended to teach the reader how to operate such microscopes to obtain the best quality images. ... Product Description
Backscattered scanning electron microscopy (BSE) reveals the minerals, textures, and fabrics of sediments and rocks in much greater detail than is possible with conventional optical microscopy. Backscattered Scanning Electron Microscopy provides a concise summary of the BSE technique. This comprehensive guide uses abundant images to illustrate the type of information BSE yields and the application of the technique to the study of sediments and sedimentary rocks. The authors review the use of this petrographic technique on all the major sedimentary rock types, including sediment grains, sandstones, shales, carbonate rocks, rock varnish, and glauconite. They also describe image analysis techniques that allow quantification of backscattered scanning electron microscope images. Heavily illustrated and lucidly written, this book will provide researchers and graduate students with the most current research on this important geological tool. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Good book, bad reproduction
If you are going to buy this book, I strongly recommend spending the extra money on the hardcover addition. I have seen both, and the image reproduction in the softback addition is borderline criminal. Photocopies of the images in the hardcover would look better than the images in the softback. This is a book in large part about images and how to interpret them and having such poor reproductions of what were originally good images significantly detracts from the book's usefulness.

Although I give the paperback addition a 2 star rating due to the poor image reproduction, I would give the hardcover 4 or 5 stars. That version is an excellent review of BSE imaging of rocks by experts on the subject.

Perhaps a digital version with decent reproductions of the images will be available in the future. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A multifaceted discussion of the essentials of transmission electron microscopy
Where Marc De Graef's wonderful book Introduction to Conventional Transmission Electron Microscopy (Cambridge Solid State Science Series) is a rigorous and self-contained physics course, Hirsch et al. is more like a distinguished historical treatise penned by Winston Churchill. And you know what they say: "Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it".Much of modern transmission electron microscopy has its roots in the topics covered in this book.I was surprised a few years back when I discovered that the central equation used in LACBED dislocation analysis came from the authors' treatment of kinematical diffraction theory!Other things, like Ashby-Brown contrast of coherent precipitates, I later learned can be used to understand TEM contrast of semiconductor quantum wells and superlattices. So save yourself some trouble and avoid reinventing the wheel by giving this book a good read!

5-0 out of 5 stars The classic
This book is old -- written in 1967, revised in 1977.Time has marched on.

That said, this is still a valuable reference. It covers, in great depth, the theory of TEM, with chapters devoted to most subjects.

The chapter and appendix on sample preparation are invaluable!

This book will be somewhat superceeded when Marc de Graef's text is published (probably in Summer 2002 -- I took de Graef's course at Carnegie Mellon Univ., it was great!), but this book will still be an important reference, and an important historical signpost, in the field of TEM. ... Read more

Product Description
In-situ high-resolution electron microscopy is a modern and powerful technique in materials research, physics, and chemistry, but no book covering it has been published until now. In-situ techniques are not even treated in textbooks of electron microscopy. Thus, there is a need to collect the present knowledge about the techniques and achievements of in-situ electron microscopy in one book. Since high-resolution electron microscopes are available in most modern laboratories of materials science, more and more scientists or students are starting to work on this subject. In this comprehensive volume, the most important techniques and achievements of in-situ high-resolution electron microscopy will be reviewed by renowned experts. Applications in several fields of materials science will also be demonstrated. ... Read more

Product Description
In this revised and expanded second edition, Electron Microscopy: Methods and Protocols presents the newest technology in electron microscopy, while maintaining the practicality and accessibility of the acclaimed first edition.Like the first edition, this volume provides clear, concise instructions on processing biological specimens and includes discussion on the underlying principles of the majority of the processes presented. Each protocol is presented by experts with years of first-hand experience and in-depth knowledge of the techniques they describe. The Notes section accompanying each protocol will prove invaluable for adapting and troubleshooting protocols. Electron Microscopy: Methods and Protocols, Second Edition, comprises two major areas of electron microscopy-transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).The TEM area covers several key techniques, including: conventional specimen preparation methods for cultured cells and biomedical and plant tissues; cryospecimen preparation by high-pressure freezing and cryoultramicrotomy negative staining and immunogold labeling techniques; and TEM crystallography and cryo-TEM tomography. The SEM area similarly attends to conventional-, variable pressure-, environmental-, and cryoscanning microscopy techniques, as well as the application of X-ray microanalysis.Protocols for the application of X-ray microanalysis to SEM and mass spectrometry conclude the volume. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good lab reference book
This book covers pretty much all of the modern techniques used in biological electron microscopy. It emphasizes the availability of many protocols for both Transmission and Scanning EM. Every chapter has a detailed protocol anda full list of accompanying references, in case the reader wants to know more about a specific topic/technique.

It is highly recommended for every student, lab tech, or researcher that wants to have an overview of the existing modern techniques or dare trying a new technique. It's format, with its 600+ pages is not very practical as a lab handbook, but the content information of strict high quality.

I have more than 10yrs of experience in biological cryo-EM, and I find this book a very useful addition to my ever growing collection. ... Read more

Product Description
"Transmission Electron Microscopy" presents the theory of image and contrast formation, and the analytical modes in transmission electron microscopy. The principles of particle and wave optics of electrons are described. Electron-specimen interactions are discussed for evaluating the theory of scattering and phase contrast. Also analysed are the kinetical and dynamical theories of electron diffraction and their applications for crystal-structure determination and imaging of lattices and their defects. X-ray microanalysis and electron energy-loss spectroscopy are treated as analytical methods. The third edition includes a brief discussion of Schottky emission guns, some clarification of minor details, and references to the recent literature. ... Read more

Product Description
Electron Diffraction in the Transmission Electron Microscope explains the basic methods of how to obtain images and patterns with the TEM, and how to interpret them. The TEMs are used in many labs, and allow users to explore the structure of a specimen of interest (e.g. a section through a particular material, crystal or tissue). This introductory-level guide looks at the patterns produced by diffracted electrons to study the appearance, orientation and structure of the sample. The book discusses useful case studies and examples to guide the new user and offers a user-friendly approach with simple explanations and informative illustrations.
