2-0 out of 5 stars Use it as a paper weight.
As a scientist who went thru the rigors of getting a PhD in an American public university, I have noticed many subtle but inefficient practices. One of the worst goes as follows.A certain promising doctoral student starts on his (or her) research. His advisor hands him a classic text to read.Said text is nigh incomprehensible, but our prodigal student endeavors and comes to gradually understand the text and apply it to his studies. He graduates, begins his career and eventually gets that tenured position.Years later when he supervises his first graduate student, he imparts said text upon a new sufferer and the process begins anew. This book by W. A. Harrison is such a text.It is extremely hard to read, the words are small, there are few images or graphs or plots, and the examples are not geared for the computer age. But, because this book came out when solid state simulations began to spread in use and multiple free codes came about, it was read and used by many scientists and apprentices.Nowadays, there are dozens of much better books that are much easier to read and understand.Yet I still encounter this text being used. Why?Because many academics fought thru it, are proud of the feat, and somehow intend their trainees to do the same.

I read this book after reading thru over a dozen other books in the same subject, and found this to be the hardest and least understandable. This book is often considered the Bible of electronic structure simulations. This is a correct statement in the worst sense possible because the number of people who understand the Bible is much less than those who swear by it; i.e. very similar to this book.Overall, I do not recommend buying it or reading it.Its only redeeming quality is the exhaustive number of equations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Without parallel in Materials Science literature
This book has no parallel in the literature of theoretical materials science. The information contained in the book allows first principle calculations of properties of important technological materials like perovskite oxides, semiconductors, etc. I would suggest the reader to consult the papers by R. Haydock and others in Solid State Physics, vol.35 of 1980 to
complemment the methods presented in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential book for condensed matter physicists
If you are studying the solid state physics, it is a necessary book for you. It covers various properties of almost all kinds of solid state materials and shows pretty new experimental data from reliable sources. This book also starts with a clear introduction in each chapter so thateven for a beginner, it is easy to read. This book will be a good referencebook for you to find out the definition of terminologies in this field.Personally, I use this book as a referece frequently.

This book isdefinitely not a book you can read through quickly but a book where youfind out information through your life.

If you are a scientist andinterested in solid state physics like semiconductor or metal, this is alsoa good book to get a good guide and introduction. ... Read more

This book views Samsung Electronics in terms of corporate life cycle as well as product portfolio and strategy. It also examines the issues Samsung faces as it proceeds further into the 21st century.

Written from the perspective of an experienced commentator on Korean and global business, this book presents not simply a narrative or an adulatory and uncritical account of Samsung's rise, but a considered analysis of the secrets of success that both business students and CEOs will want to read and consider applying to their own companies. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating look at an Asian business
Although many business books promise business success, one of the strongest themes of academic criticism of this literature should be that, in business, success does not last, according to Tony Michell in this book. The book tells the story of the rise of the Samsung group of companies and the spectacular success in the last decade of Samsung Electronics.

Most business books written in English relate to businesses in the US, the UK or other predominantly English-speaking countries with similar cultures, but the rising importance of Asian businesses in the global economy makes it increasingly necessary that Westerners understand the driving forces behind successful Asian businesses. Although this book is not written by a Samsung insider, it is written by an academic with extensive knowledge of the Korean business environment.

Particularly interesting insights include: the influence and control that a single founder and the founder's family seem to have had over Korean businesses that have grown very large;the degree to which Korean laws have resulted in the unusual corporate structures; the ways in which Korean culture has helped and hindered the success of Samsung; and the continuing struggle between old and new cultural forces within the company.

There is some repetition in the text, and I found some parts of the book less interesting than others, but on the whole I found it both interesting and informative, and I would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in the electronics industry or who is just curious about the story behind the company that makes those mobile phones, LCD displays and other consumer electronic devices. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Easy Way To Learn Electronics
I have purchased 8 of these books this month to give to my associates and friends who were wanting to learn more about the basics of electrical and electronics theory. I have purchased many books on this subject over the years, this book stands out as the best book for the money. The approach is basic, without trying to impress you with the authors knowledge about the subject. Too many of the other books attempt to go so deep into theory you complete the course wondering how you passed, being unsure of what was being presented. Keep it simple silly, also know as the KISS System.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Great Book for electronics. Tells you everything you need to know plus has quiz and answers in the back.

2-0 out of 5 stars informative, but plagued with problems
This book covers a wide range of electronics topics, from basicconcepts, circuit analysis, components, to op amps, tranformers, and and even TV's, and VCR's.While I have to admit that I learned a few things from the book, it suffers from many errors. I can't recommend it unless you have an expert around, such as a college professor, to constantly be verifying the information you are reading. Most won't have that. All of the chapters tend to give superficial coverage, never going deeply into anything.

Near the end of the book the author tends to turn things into more of a "how it works" book rather than basic electronics, talking about VCR's, stereo's, and CD players. It does seem a bit off the main topic of the book, but I couldn't really fault him until I ran across the section on HDTV where he said "If HDTV does manage to get off the ground in this country, it will remain a high-end luxury variation. There is almost no chance that it will ever phase out and replace the current standard television system." When you venture far astray from the original path of your expertise, you are likely to get burned for it. Why is he making political predictions?

The book contains three chapters focused on experiments which attempt to give the reader a chance to actually see the concepts in action. This sounds like a great learning opportunity, but as I read through the excercises, I quickly realized that the schematics where not labeled correctly and there was much confusion about exactly what the experiment was at times. Overall, I cannot recommend the book for many reasons, but there are three big strikes.I happened to run across the 2nd edition of this book in the library by accident and compared the two.It is sad to see that many errors/problems were just replicated into the 4th edition here.

The first big strike against this book is that the author has chosen to go against convention and insist that current flows from negative to positive.I wouldn't call him out on this except that when you do something like that it is imperative to annouce it so everyone is clear about it.He does not. Instead, he just states that current flows negative to positive and acts like everyone else sees it that way.

This book has a section on electric fields and the author feels compelled to get into the medical concerns about electricity in power lines causing cancer, etc., etc.Since this is a political argument with no definitive answer, I have to say "inappropriate." Again, stick to the subject of the book!

For the final strike, there are the errors, so I will give an example. The chapter on power supplies has a subsection on voltage regulation, the intent being to create a circuit that will maintain a specific voltage regardless of the applied load.He refers to figure 32-10, stating that R2 is to be replaced by a choke (an inductor). Trouble is that figure does NOT HAVE an R2, but it DOES have an L1 (the choke?). Has it already been replaced? A subsequent figure shows both a resistor called R2 PLUS the choke. So what's going on?When I looked at the 2nd edition of the book I found the same error with the figures plus something rather bizarre:Referring to the L1 choke, he is correct when stating that "This coil will oppose any change in VOLTAGE passing through it.", however the 4th edition (this book) states "This coil will oppose any change in CURRENT passing through it." Is it current, voltage or both that get controlled? It really looks like he introduced an error 2 editions later. You just can't trust this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good/Bad reviews BOTH valid -- it's a bizarre case
As I write, this FOURTH (!) edition book has about a dozen scathing reviews and a half dozen good-to-equivocating reviews. Strangely, I find myself agreeing with all of them. Horn's writing style really IS remarkably good (e.g., the WAY he introduces Kirchhoff's laws, p.33-47), and the typos ARE astonishingly awful. Flip to page 202-203 for the very first Ohm's Law experiment, and he shows "3mA" where the value obviously must be "30mA". (And all of the mA values in his table are off by this same factor of ten.) And given the insanely vague depiction of the transformer coils for Experiment 10 on page 214 (which you plug into a wall socket!), I even agree with the reviewer who said publication of this book is "almost criminally negligent." On the other hand, one page earlier, Experiment 9 on LRC resonance is beautiful -- just the ticket. My advice: Although strictly speaking this is a "technical" book, try to read it only for its ideas, and avoid ALL the technical details like the plague. (Notice that no reviewer so far has said, "Instead I recommend that you buy XYZ which covers the same terrain sans aggravating errors." One suspects that there is no such book, and that's why this one persists, BIG warts and all.)

3-0 out of 5 stars Beware the Horn
This book is clearly written and I have used it as a textbook in a course I teach on the principles and history of radio that I have been giving at
U. Mass Lowell for over 10 years. The students are liberal arts majors who usually have had no calculus. The level of math in this book is appropriate for them. The author has done a disservice to his readers by not providing an address where he could be informed of errors and shortcomings that could have been easily corrected in subsequent printings. This textbook has already had a number of printings but the errors persist. Here are some problemsthat readers should know about:

On page 28 the author should tell you that when two resistors are in parallel the equivalent resistor is the product of the given resistances divided by their sum. Every technician, electrical engineer and radio ham knows this formula. On page 81 the author should provide the corresponding formula for capacitors in series: the product divided by the sum is the equivalent capacitance.

Hams and EE's know that for a radio wave the frequency in megahertz times the wavelength in meters is equal to 300. This should appear on page 534 where the author discusses the length of antenna elements.

There is a sign error on page 539 . The equation 37-2 should be
FO=RF + IF. See Paul Nahin's book on the science of radio. The formula for the inductance of a coil given on p. 110 yields the inductance in microhenries; the author says millihenries and he is wrong.

Product Description
Aimed at both the novice and expert in IT security and industrial control systems (ICS), this book will help readers gain a better understanding of protecting ICSs from electronic threats. Cyber security is getting much more attention and 'SCADA security' (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) is a particularly important part of this field, as are Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs)-and all the other, field controllers, sensors, and drives, emission controls, and that make up the 'intelligence' of modern industrial buildings and facilities. This book will help the reader better understand what is industrial control system cyber security, why is it different than IT security, what has really happened to date, and what needs to be done. Loads of practical advice is offered on everything from clarity on current cyber-security systems and how they can be integrated into general IT systems, to how to conduct risk assessments and how to obtain certifications, to future trends in legislative and regulatory issues affecting industrial security. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Important for EMS engineers
This book is a must read for all system engineers involved in critical infrastructure protection systems.Mr. Wiess's grasp of the topic is insightful and his recommendations are founded in good engineering practices.Easy book to read with case studies fully developed making it excellent for student, engineer and management.

4-0 out of 5 stars Protecting ICS from Electronic Threats
I first had learned about the book Protecting Industrial Control Systems from Electronic Threats on a SCADA perpectives blog.In my current postion I am a member of a team assigned to protect Cybersecurity assets in an ICS environment so I made sure that I purchased the book when it was released.

I liked the book and recommend it for any individual that has a strong background in IT security (such as myselft) yet little or no experience with ICS. The case studies serve to highlight the fact that ICS can and have been subject to "attack".

Appendix 5: Typical Distributed Control Systme Procurement Specification provided insights for me to what I need to pay closer attention to when new systems or systems upgrades occur.

I could not agree more that a training program needs to be in place to allow security staff not only assure compliance but to know that the systems are secure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Systemic security issues finally get attention
Industrial control systems (ICS) execute large-scale manufacturing and commodity product delivery processes. They run electronic power grids, nuclear power plants, water and sewage treatment plants, transportation signaling, and numerous other recognizably critical infrastructures. Joe Weiss walks the layman effortlessly through the world of ICS cyber-components: distributed control systems, programmable logic controllers, intelligent electronic devices, remote terminal units, and supervisory control and data acquisition (DCS, PLC, IED, RTU, and SCADA). Along the way, he points out the cybersecurity vulnerabilities inherent in the design and operation of these systems. With examples that can be directly traced to headline news, he describes how easy it is to disrupt these systems with simple cybersecurity hacks.

Though it may seem odd to the reader that such obviously critical systems are so easily disrupted, the way that Weiss explains the evolution of ICS and the myths that surround attempts at ICS technical security evaluation, his story line makes sense. For example, a typical software program lives 3-5 years before a major architectural change. A typical industrial control system lives 15-20. That means that the technology components in an ICS are likely to be at least 10 years old, very outdated by technology standards, and correspondingly vulnerable to today's sophisticated cyber-attacks. In addition, cybersecurity threats to ICS are not the same as cybersecurity threats to mainstream information technology. An ICS is typically much more sensitive to very small changes in electronic components. Hence, technology controls that are often proscribed for mainstream information assurance, like scanning and patching, can actually harm these systems more than they help them.

Weiss does a great job of bringing attention to this serious national security issue. The book is as engaging as it is rare. It will benefit anyone who is interested in critical infrastructure protection or systems security engineering.

5-0 out of 5 stars Describing the Problems
There are those that feel that this book is lacking in some way or another and proudly tell you so.I am not one of those people. The book is not aimed at the professional cyber type, but rather at the common man.The intent is to place before the people a "common sense of the problem".Before you can solve a problem you need to be able to describe that problem.Few have ever described the problem in a way that allows all of us to understand what is going on.

For the most part, most of us have no knowledge of control systems, much feel that we even interact with control systems on a daily basis. This is the point of the book, "We, the people" deal with control systems 24x7 in all aspects of our lives. As we are carried into the "SmartGrid", whether we want it or not, we will be required to deal with control systems. We currently have control systems in our homes, don't believe me just look around and see (the thermostat on your wall, the refrigerator, the hot water heater, the stove, the oven, the microwave, the smoke alarm, ...) what makes these work are the control systems in them. The Smartgrid wants to link these things together, and allow external controls of these systems.

I, for one, applaud the book as placing a face on the beast and offering a framework on how we need to get that beast under control.I am also reminded, as I read this book and others on the same topic, about the blind wise men the first time they encounter and Elephant. <[...]> WE are all groping for the description of the problem, but most are ready to supply a solution when they still can not define the problem. Are all of these people wrong, consider the blind wise men.I prefer to use anything I can to open my eyes and get a view of the problem and this book helps to resolve that problem.

I would recommend this book to anyone that needs to understand the problem but is not technically oriented in the cyber world. All of you that are trying to understand why you are spending all that money on something that you can not see, touch, or feel will gain from this book. For those of you trying to justifiy why you need the money, use the book to assist.I look forward to more from this author in the future.

2-0 out of 5 stars Missing: A Quality Editor - Pass On This
Joe Weiss's, one of the pioneers in control system security, attempt at writing an overarching book on control system security is almost unreadable. It meanders, doesn't provide information or opinions in a coherent way, and continues to fail at the end with a set of 40+ disjointed, bulleted recommendations. The recommendations range from "Determine what you really want to do, and do it" to block LAND attacks. It is not that all of these recommendations are wrong; they are just not presented in a useful manner with the appropriate background set up in earlier parts of the book.

This is disappointing because Joe has the necessary experience and knowledge, as well as a distinct point of view, to write a compelling book. I would have loved to read an organized explanation on his beyond security definition of cyber incidents, how they should be addressed today and what he feels we need to do in the future, but it is not in this book. The lack of solutions or description of the path forward, beyond the detailed recommendation for an ICS-CERT in Chapter 9, is glaring. Are we suppose to live with fragile systems from an electronic threat standpoint or what do we need to do as a community to improve the situation?

Ultimately I blame the editor or reviewers because they should have been pointing out rather obvious problems with most of the chapters.

If you do pick up this book, skip to the Selected Case Histories in Chapters 14 and 15. These 40 pages show what could have been, and the section on the 1998 Maroochy Wastewater Hack is the best writeup I've seen on this oft discussed event. These chapters are useful for those new to control system security whether they come from IT Security or Operations. I will quibble a bit with the Olympic Pipeline Company Cyber Security Issues section in Chapter 15. Joe points out numerous flaws in the cyber security program there, but there is no evidence that these had anything to do with the event. In fact I think this discussion weakens his premise that we need to be concerned with cyber incidents, not just cyber security incidents.

There are nuggets, but they pass without substantiation or comment. For example, in Chapter 1 - Background Joe writes:

"In fact, on September 10, 2001, I held two panel sessions on ICS security at ISA Expo in Houston, Texas. Attendees also included auto parts manufacturers and even a dog food manufacturer. The next day the world changed forever. From that infamous date onward, the perception of ICS security changed from a business issue to a national security imperative. This had the unfortunate implication of shifting the onus from the end user to the government"

I wanted to understand why he thinks this was unfortunate. What would have happened if it was still just a business issue for the owner/operator? It seems to fly in the face of his feeling that we need a firm regulatory hand and would be better off in FISMA applied to all.

Another problem is the intended audience was not effectively considered. If it was a control system novice, this book would not have helped and others are better. If it is was an owner/operator there was little to help them move forward with cyber security. If the reader was experienced in control system security there is little new here in fact or thought.

Some basic details on the book. It is 320 pages long; half of that is the main body of the book. The second half is Appendices including Acronyms, Glossary, Comparison of Definitions, CSIS White Paper and a DCS RFP. The DCS RFP and Joe's notes on the absence of well defined security requirements may be of interest to those who have not seen a control system RFP.

The wait continues for the definitive control system security book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great
This is going to be brief...The book walks you through the lab project and asks you to record your observations and/or calculations, but in my humble opinion they could've given more detailed instructions with the project setups. In other words, this is where the instructor comes in and fills in the gaps. To get this for personal use is not necessarily a good choice as there are other more exciting books out there, though for school use it is good enough. I own it, I am going for an electronics major, I personally thought this book was good, but not great.

4-0 out of 5 stars Expensive but well organized and easy presentation to read
I like building circuits and playing with electronics. It is one thing to build a circuit board from scratch and solder all the pieces into place and quite another to understand WHY it works.

I therefore recommend this book if you want to know WHY.

I found it concise, easy to understand, and well presented. A very organized book which starts from first principles and introduces diodes, then BJT and FET and then Diff amps which is a natural segue into op amps and active filters.

Plenty of worked examples and exercises to test your knowledge.

Highschool math prerequisite.

A very practical introductory book the hobbyist such as myself can understand and appreciate.

Expensive which is why I gave it 4 stars. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best delivery
The book was the correct item and it arrived in good time. However, it was shipped in a thin plastic bag without any structure or padding. This book is 8.5x11x1.5 inches has nearly 1000 pages and weighs almost 5 pounds. As a result the corners of the cover were crushed and there was a half inch triangular gouge in the front cover.I'd have paid an extra $5.00 for better packaging rather than lose an unknown trade-in value.

5-0 out of 5 stars Electronic devices
This book is really good on explaining the fundamentals of electronic devices while incorporating the math explanations.Sedra/Smith (Microelectronics) has a little more math but Floyd does a better job in showing real world applications.Lastly, I would recommend owning both Floyd and Sedra/Smith to get you battle ready for the world of electronics design.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
I wish it had more detail on some of the subjects covered. More detailed exaples would be nice in its content, it would help drive iin the material. needs more examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple enough to understand
I have several college electronics text books. Compared to the others this one was basic enough for me to understand the bare basics. Only after using this book have I been able to use the more advanced books.

I appreciate this book does not have the depth others have, but that is exactly why it helped me get started in electronics. I am self studying so I really needed the simplicity.

I want to thank the author for inviting me into the fascinating world of electronics design. ... Read more

I bought this book for my fiance. He is really into electronics and he loved it because the book is well set up and explained.Just one problem thought. The book arrived from amazon totally wet and when I tried to contact them the form was returning an error.I was very disappointed because the pages were literally stuck together!

My son being a computer geek asked for this book at xmas when he opened it he was like a little kid again(he is 26 )

5-0 out of 5 stars "MORE Gadgets" better than first book
The first Electronic Gadgets for the Evil Genius book had devices that were a bit more sci-fi and cool, but although the information was interesting, not many are going to actually be able to build any of them, as parts will be expensive and hard to find. This second GADGETS book actually has a few circuits that you could actually build with parts that are more available.

As I said in the other reviews on this series of "evil genius" books, be carefull as there are many books in this series, but it is the one that states "GADGETS" in the titles that you want, if you are wanting the circuits that will make you rub your hands together and twist your mustache as you make that sinister laugh.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential item for Corporate Finance or Real Estate Classes
This book is an essential tool for corporate finance classes. While the textbook that I used, "Corporate Finance" by Stephen Ross, Westerfield and Jaffe was clear and concise, it did not give any instructions on solving the problems in any way except algebraically.Calculators are an essential tool and if you need any help in connecting those formulas to calculator inputs, this is your guide.

The book is short, but sweet. It includes instructions and line by line inputs for HP 10BII and two other basic models.

You learn how to calculate the basics of NPV, Bonds & Stocks, Mortgages, and Statistics using your particular brand of calculator.

The book is an excellent value for the money! ... Read more

This book is very easy to read and understand by not getting into all the same details. Suitable for those who wants an overview of EW but not going too deep into the topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for first course in EW
This book is the perfect introduction. The book starts from the beginning and works from a novice perspective to more complex subjects. This text is perfect to develop an understanding of Electronic Warfare.
I have used this text to give me the fundamentals that are missing in some of the other texts. I would highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adamy's book is the cornerstone of EW training in the AF
Working with AF engineers, I have noticed this on more bookshelves than I could count.I had to know what was so great about this book - its utility is in the clarity of instruction.Equations about link budgets, descriptions about EW, and the diagrams showing uses make this book worth the cost.If your book budget allows, EW 102 is a great addition as well.

Product Description
An integrated Electric Energy Systems curriculum consists of three segments: Power Electronics, Power Systems and Electric Drives. This textbook follows a top-down systems-level approach to Power Electronics to highlight interrelationships between these sub-fields. This textbook is intended to teach students both the fundamentals and practical design in a single-semester course. A building-block approach to power electronics allows an in-depth discussion of several important topics that are left out in conventional courses, for example, designing feedback control, power-factor-correction circuits, soft-switching, and SV-PWM which is a PWM technique far superior to Sine-PWM, to name a few. The topics in this book are carefully sequenced to maintain continuity and student interest throughout the course. In a fast pace course with proper student background, this book can be covered from front-to-back in one semester. However, the material is arranged in such a way that an instructor, to accommodate the students background, can either omit an entire topic or cover it quickly to provide just an overview using the PowerPoint-based slides on the accompanying CD, without interrupting the flow. ... Product Description
This latest text in the new Oxford Master Series in Physics provides a much need introduction to band theory and the electronic properties of materials. Written for students in physics and material science, the book takes a pedagogical approach to the subject through the extensive use of illustrations, examples and problem sets. The author draws on his extensive experience teaching band theory to provide the reader with a thorough understanding of the field. Considerable attention is paid to the vocabulary and quantum-mechanical training necessary to learn about the electronic, optical and structural properties of materials in science and technology. The text also offers several chapters on the newest experimental techniques used to study band structure.Concise yet rigorous, it fills a long overdue gap between student texts and current research activities. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A nice overview, but lacking detail
This book offers a pretty decent overview of band theory, but it's woefully lacking in detail, especially in the later chapters, which seem to get progressively more qualitative. You shouldn't rely on this book to give a thorough knowledge of band theory, but it's worth reading.I think it would be especially useful when preparing for talks, because the explanations in the book are pretty easy to understand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good introductory solid state physics book
This book is a good bridge between very abbreviated descriptions of solid state physics found in most EE semiconductor device books and a tome like Ashcroft and Mermin's standard Solid State Physics book. It is mainly descriptive and elementary (the Boltzmann transport equation is barely mentioned). I like it because the author often plainly says useful things like the effective masses of electrons and light holes are similar, or that the heavy hole masses are pretty much the same for common semiconductors. The coverage of optical properties is minimal, apparently by design since the book is part of a series (Optical Properties of Solids by Fox).

4-0 out of 5 stars Band structure engineering
In solid state/condensed matter physics, there is somewhat of a gap between introductory books and research papers on actually doing cutting edge work in band theory. Singleton attempts to remedy that with a text aimed squarely at honours-level students (in the UK), which is equivalent to senior level undergrads in the US.

He starts with the simple Drude and Sommerfeld models. These are historically important, and also don't need much in the way of computation. They could not have, actually, since they were devised at a time (pre-1940s), when electronic computers were unavailable. Singleton then quickly moves to the tight-binding model, which leads directly into modern band structure.

From this, he shows how we get semiconductors and insulators. Then, how nowadays we can do better than nature. Instead of restricting ourselves to band structures of bulk compounds, we can synthesise heterostructures, and thus manipulate the resultant band structures in a quantitative fashion, giving novel and useful properties on a bulk scale.

This might also motivate some readers to do research into such new materials. ... Read more

Product Description
Higher education institutions of all kinds—across the United States and around the world—have rapidly expanded the use of electronic portfolios in a broad range of applications including general education, the major, personal planning, freshman learning communities, advising, assessing, and career planning.

Widespread use creates an urgent need to evaluate the implementation and impact of eportfolios. Using qualitative and quantitative methods, the contributors to this book—all of whom have been engaged with the Inter/National Coalition for Electronic Portfolio Research—have undertaken research on how eportfolios influence learning and the learning environment for students, faculty members, and institutions.

This book features emergent results of studies from 20 institutions that have examined effects on student reflection, integrative learning, establishing identity, organizational learning, and designs for learning supported by technology. It also describes how institutions have responded to multiple challenges in eportfolio development, from engaging faculty to going to scale.

These studies exemplify how eportfolios can spark disciplinary identity, increase retention, address accountability, improve writing, and contribute to accreditation. The chapters demonstrate the applications of eportfolios at community colleges, small private colleges, comprehensive universities, research universities, and a state system. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars basic engineering
This book was exactly what my son needed and was in good shape. It also saved me alot of money buying from amazon.com rather than purchasing it through the college bookstore.

1-0 out of 5 stars really basic. confusing descriptions
Onlychapter 2&3 are worth reading.chapter one is ok if you remember no HS chemistry or physics. Chapter 4 on diodes and transistors starts well but leaves you a bit confused in the end.

Chapter 5 is bad because of the missing information in chapter 4.

The rest of the book is a waste.

Still looking for a book on electronics that will let me have a clue as to how circuits are designed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tough first chapter but stick with it, rewards do follow.
I found the first chapter in this book a bit tough to read.It can be very technical but it does let up after chapter one.For basic understanding it is a good idea to read the math explanations but no need to memorize it to understand the rest of the book. The following chapters unfold in a very easy to follow manner and you will have a good understanding of the basic components that make up electronic devices.
Worth the money!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book when just starting in Electrical Engineering

1-0 out of 5 stars Just another classroom "textbook"!
Unfortunately, I listened to the reviews on this book, and purchased it in the hopes that this was not another "dry and compacted" classroom-type, made-for-geeks-only textbook, and guess what...it is~!

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK, if you want basic electricity theories explained in layman's language (i.e; "easy-to-understand")---the information is crammed into 1 page, just like a book brought in a College bookstore!!
