5-0 out of 5 stars Jim Karas ROCKS!!
Jim's other book, "Business plan for the body" REALLY changed my life and this book is also a "must have", in my mind. Take it from someone who has struggled with their weight for years, this book is a tool to get you going in the right direction!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information, some of the same
This book had some great information but a lot of it was what we have been hearing before: eat right, exercise, get enough sleep.

There was some new stuff. In the exercise section the author discounts cardio and says you only have to do strength training (except for walking). As someone who HATES cardio you think I would love this advice. But I have never noticed major and quick weight loss without cardio. Of course this book was more about having more energy. I do notice that cardio seems to make me more tired. But I would think then, one should just do cardio closer to the evening rather than not at all, since cardio relieves excess weight and weight also drains your energy.

Even if you disagree with the cardio advice though, there's some new stuff: how you should breathe in order to have more energy, more sex for more energy, mood/attitude's affect on energy, and music's affect on energy. Still I wouldn't say the info is revolutionary, just not usually what people think of when they think about more energy. It kinda goes like this: the deeper you breathe, the more sex you have, and the more positive your thoughts=more energy. Music is a little more involved of a section.

Worth getting if you're into this stuff or if you're from an old school way of thinking and having heard about how to breathe properly and attitude's effect on energy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply amazing
Jim never ceases to amaze me.He continuously refines his concepts and philosophy through research and hard work. His book is fantastic and on target. He and Cynthia come together in this book in a way nobody else has in the industry. The great thing is, every day you see more and more research coming out that supports the tenants of the book.

I travel all around the world for work and keeping my energy up is critical. The 7 Day Surge walks you through the critical steps to improving your life mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally.

Jim & Cynthia really hit it out of the ballpark with this book!

BUY IT, READ IT AND LIVE IT!

5-0 out of 5 stars the best book ever in it's category
This is the first time that I truly see a book that guides you by body and mind, I recomend this book to anyone that wants to be a better person> I'm giving this as a real valued present to my loved ones

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS A BRILLIANT BOOK!5 BOOKS IN ONE!
Jim Karas & Cynthia Costas Cohen hit it out of the ballpark with this book! The 7 Day Surge walks you through the most important steps ever to improving your life mentally, physically, spiritually, emotionally and let's not leave out sexually!

They hit the nail on the head from start to finish and Jim is just so funny and to the point about getting rid of the nonsense and focusing on what our bodies really need that this book is a quick and easy read.

Yes, this book will flat out challenge you to get serious and stop sitting on your butt waiting for a pound to miraculously fall off onto the floor.

I went to Trader Joe's yesterday and realized that for the first time I was writing a shopping list while I shopped and sampled. And I also saw how much junk I buy that I don't even want or need.

Follow Jim and Cynthia's directions to the T in this book. There are people in Los Angeles paying these two "Energy Experts"thousands of dollars to get their lives together and now you can do it for what?$17.00 bucks. That's a good deal to me. I feel like Whoopi every time I eat something now!

Thanks to both Karas and Cohen! You really wrote a great book that is changing my life for the better every day! ... Read more

Product Description
Opening the Energy Gates of Your Body introduces the key concepts of chi gung in a manner both accessible and understandable to Westerners. With fascinating insights gained from years of training in Asia as a warrior, healer, and priest, Bruce Frantzis demystifies the concept of "chi," the body’s vital energy life force, and shows why this 3000-year-old system of self-healing works. The book provides a set of enjoyable, low impact exercises that readers can learn on their own, including standing chi gung, a core exercise that effectively boosts performance for martial artists, athletes, business people, and others. Body alignments and Taoist breathing, fundamentals that are the foundation of all Taoist energy practices, are also taught, with special alignments that benefit those who must sit for long periods of time. The book also reveals how chi gung can enhance other forms of exercise, from yoga and Pilates to golf and basketball. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginners & advanced
Bruce Frantzis is obviously uniquely trained in Chi Gung, Nei Gung, Tai Chi, Hsing-i and Ba gua. A Western person being individually trained by an Eastern internal arts master is unheard of, let alone being brought into the lineage of the art.

So when Bruce Frantzis publishes a book on Opening the Energy Gates of Your Body you can expect it is done correctly and done with safety in mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars breathing better already
This is a great book, it takes awihle to get to the actual teachings and but is worth the price just for the breathing techniques alone.I am a month into trying this and it does take time but is easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent ground-work for internal martial arts
I agree with one 5-star reviewer that is the best book of the author (and I also agree with that reviewer that it is disappointing that the author hasn't followed it up with other books along the same direction, but instead mumble-jumbled into many shady "New Age" stuffs and sexual chi gung!).Anyway, his teaching of basic standing meditation (zhan zhuang) has been thorough, and I agree a lot with his focus on alignment, and his partner assisted opening the groin (kua) technique is very useful.

There are two training direction of opening one's chi (or energy) blockages. The classic Taoist way is opening through the meridians during meditation. For best results, it has to be supplemented by moving forms. And the cloud hands is one of the best form, and the author presented in a clear and logical way.His spinal stretch is however only rudimentary.

The author seems to be a man of publicity. And I'm sure he would receive much praise if he could share with us more of his other similar/more in-depth good practices (assuming available) in books, and not keep saying he won't do it for safety reasons (as if legal disclaimer doesn't work).

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Bruce
I finally have my copy and can't put it down. I have already begun using the exercises, which are bringing relief to my very painful muscles. I have a lower back injury, expensive, fun thieving, injury and I know that I will recover learning from Bruce. I may not have been so focused on taking care of my body, or may not have discovered Bruce's teachings, had I not tripped over that low lying branch in the bush! The injury has been a powerful catalyst for change in my life, helping me to deeply appreciate good health and many beautiful everyday occurances in life. I am inspiredto learn from him and will buy more of his books and dvds, cds... I recommend his work. There are thousands of quigongs out there and every teacher has there own way. This way is a good way to walk. Kind regards, Helen Anderson, Blue Mountains, Australia.

3-0 out of 5 stars A great book, but you really need a teacher..
There are two main things about this book:

A) It's filled with loads of practical information, and great advice both for martial artists and those who practice Qigong.I found the several chapters on standing meditation (Zhan zhuang) especially enlightening.

B) Much of the book is detailing his main methods of clearing Qi blockages, which are the "swings".The "Swings" would be very difficult to do properly without a qualified instructor, and thus I considered those portions of the book (50% or more) useless.

Product Description

Everyone has had luminous moments in their lives. It's the "a-ha" moment when one experiences the beauty and grace of life, whether it be when looking into the eyes of a newborn child or watching the sun set over the ocean. But those moments are usually too brief. Too often, people walk around in a fog, feeling vaguely frustrated, resigned, and cynical and asking all the wrong questions about how to make life better.  They miss the purpose for being alive: to wake up and become oneself, to allow others to contribute to them and to, in turn, contribute their gifts to the world. This book gives readers specific methods for allowing luminosity into their lives on a consistent basis, allowing them to view the world with much younger, more vibrant eyes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mastering Life's Energies
I love this book!It is full of fresh insights and life-altering wisdom. It is much more than an average self-help book.It offers keys to focusing our energies on what is important to us.I buy lots of copies and give them to people I like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Who IS this woman??
My husband is wondering who took his wife & left this calm woman in her place!Maria's (she feels like an old friend) book truly did leave me with the gifts of clarity, focus & ease, combined for grace in action. My first appearance at a local farmer's market - on a hot July day - met with the on-site discovery of rusted canopy struts. There we were, with hopelessly broken canopy and dozens & dozens of cupcakes with highly perishable buttercream frostings.Having just finished Mastering Life's Energies, there was no sense of panic or impassioned near-hysterics.Tracked down the market coordinator, let her know there was a situation, and between the two of us we came up with a perfectly workable solution - and I experienced a luminous moment.HIGHLY recommend it as a highly effective, spiritually low tech, well-crafted (love the way she reinforces core messages throughout the book & summarizes at the end) guide to living a coherent life that welcomes luminosity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent! Sublime! Practical !
I interviewed Dr. Nemeth many years ago for an article I was writing about spirituality and money.
Now, years later, I've come upon "Mastering Life's Energies." I tend to eschew "self-help" books but this is no self-help book. Well, yes, it can help the self. But I would say it challenges the old, limited self to grow into something much deeper and much more meaningful and yes, luminous. I appreciate especially the comments on ontology -- we name the specifics of our ground-of-being (via our life intentions and standards of integrity) and these become our guiding lamp-posts toward living a life of meaning. (I'd say we need such an Ontological Revolution in these challenging times we live in!) Nemeth integrates metaphors from the new sciences and brain research to support how we may re-conceptualize the meaning of what it means to be fully alive each day. Get the book. Read it! ... Product Description
A global study of the psychospiritual body and its central role in the esoteric and spiritual traditions of the world

• Explains the nature, purpose, and functions of the subtle body

• Explores the role of the subtle body in such traditions as Alchemy, Ayurveda, Tantra, Qi Gong, and Yoga

• Shows how the various layers of the subtle body provide a map for various levels of consciousness

Ancient traditions of both the East and West have long maintained that the human being is a complex of material and nonmaterial systems, or energy bodies. The “subtle body” is an energetic, psychospiritual entity of several layers of increasing subtlety and metaphysical significance through which the aspirant seeks knowledge of the self and the nature of God. In many traditions, the component parts of the subtle body serve as a map of the different levels of consciousness.

The practices and disciplines that evolved from an awareness and understanding of the subtle body, and how the material and nonmaterial work together, form a coherent system of psychospiritual transformation that is central to numerous and extremely diverse spiritual practices--including those of the Gnostics, Sufis, Native Americans, Vedic seers, Chinese, and Greeks. The subtle body plays an essential part in more recent traditions such as Anthroposophy and Gurdjieff’s Fourth Way and the cutting-edge science of Ervin Laszlo’s research into the Akashic field. But the benefits of understanding the role of the subtle energy body are not confined solely to the spiritual plane. The energetic bodies provide a coherent system of life-affirming principles and practices for the diagnosis and treatment of the whole person that is not only part of many traditional healing systems, such as Acupuncture and Ayurveda, but also is forming the basis for a synthesis of traditional and contemporary healing practices that could lay the foundation for the medicine of the future. ... Reviewed by Irene Watson for Reader Views (10/10)

The back of "The Subtle Energy Body" says "The `subtle body' is an energetic, psycho-spiritual entity of several layers of increasing subtlety and metaphysical significance through which the aspirant seeks knowledge of the self and the nature of God."Maureen Lockhart gives us pathways to find that knowledge of the self, attain freedom from things that tie us down and get a closer connection with our God.

The book is divided into two parts; one being "Eastern Perspectives" and the other being "Western Perspectives." Combining the two gives us a better understanding of the practices and how we can incorporate them into our own lives.

Personally I've been a seeker and healer for the past forty years so having an opportunity to delve into this book gave me a lot of "ahas."I specifically enjoyed reading chapter seven, "The Bodies of Buddha," where I found that "each Buddha is believed to be capable of overcoming a particular evil with a particular good, and each has a complete system of iconographic symbolism. Each is associated with a direction, a color, a mudra, a mantra, a symbol, an element, a sense, and specific qualities."

The book includes colorful photographs depicting icons, mandalas, and other symbols.I enjoyed seeing the Tibetan monks demonstrating mandala painting as well as seeing a sand mandala.I had the opportunity to experience watching both being done; mesmerized by the detail and focus the monks have. They are true symbols of having their energy body synchronized with their source.

"The Subtle Energy Body" makes a great resource for those that are already attuned their own energy body but more importantly it's for those that are seeking that "something" that is missing in their lives.Lockhart provides a gateway, you provide the body. ... Read more

I am one of "those" folks that book readers hate. The one that "HI LITE"the parts I love in the books I buy.

I have used several of the exercises in the book with small groups, as a monthly growth exercise.

Great tool.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great, if you are new ageish
I thought this would be something more analytical with real information. It was a little new ageish for my taste, but I have friends who swear by it. I guess it depends on how deeply you believe this stuff. It wouldn't be a good overview of the energy centers, but rather a more in-depth view, with more spiritual explanations.

Product Description

The coming energy crisis caused by a peak in global oil and natural gas production will profoundly affect the lives of all North Americans. As the price of these vital fuels rises, homeowners will scramble to cut their fuel bills. Two options for meeting the upcoming challenge are dramatic improvements in home energy efficiency and efforts to tap into clean, affordable, renewable energy resources to heat and cool homes, to provide hot water and electricity, and even to cook. These measures can result in huge savings and a level of energy independence.

The Homeowner’s Guide to Renewable Energy tells you how. It starts by outlining the likely impacts of fossil fuel shortages and some basic facts about energy. It then discusses energy conservation to slash energy bills and prepare for renewable energy options. Focusing carefully on specific strategies needed to replace specific fuels, the book then examines each practical energy option available to homeowners:

• Solar hot water, cooking, and water purification
• Space heat: passive and active solar retrofits
• Wood heat
• Passive cooling
• Solar electricity
• Wind-generated electricity
• Electricity from microhydropower sources
• Emerging technologies—hydrogen, fuel cells, methane digesters, and biodiesel

The Homeowner’s Guide to Renewable Energy gives readers sufficient knowledge to hire and communicate effectively with contractors and, for those wanting do installations themselves, it recommends more detailed manuals. With a complete resource listing, this well-illustrated and accessible guide is a perfect companion for illuminating the coming dark age.

Dan Chiras has studied renewable energy and energy efficiency for three decades and has installed several renewable energy systems. He lives in a self-designed passive solar/solar electric home. An award-winning author of over 20 books, he is a sustainability design consultant who teaches courses on renewable energy, green building, and sustainability at Colorado College.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE homeowner's guide for renewable & energy efficiency
This is a must have book for anyone wanting to read up on how to improve your environmental footprint. Good Source of information for both renewable energy and energy efficiency. The book is a easy read and I highly recommend this book as well as others that Dan Chiras has written.I love this author, he really knows what he is talking about. Not only does he talk about it, he also practices what he preaches.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very user friendly, informative.
This is very good review of renewable options. You don't have to be an engineer yet it is more than you've read in the newspapers and such.I saw some things I hadn't heard of.It is realistic, not everything works everywhere. It takes into account cost and return. It is not a tech manual, you won't know how to install the whole system (whichever it would be) but you'll likely know which way to go if need more.If I have a beef it is that the photos could be more and better.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok book.
Could have used more content on solar theory and techniques, and less on what is available commercially...

More DIY info would be better.

5-0 out of 5 stars The bible ofrenewable energy for the home.
This is an outstanding, readable, comprehensive presentation of the subject of renewable energy for the homeowner. For each topic the author presents the principles, salient facts and a range of projects from the simplest do-it-yourself to that which would require a professional installation. Illustrations are excellent. In solar hot water for example he presents projects which range froma mini batch system consisting of a coiled black hose to a professionally installed all weather solar collector, storage with on-demand gas supplement. Based on this reading I plan to build a freestanding outdoor thermosiphon solar shower using cast off materials and to replace an inefficient hot water tank with a propane on-demand all season hot water heater. Chiras educates the homeowner to think broadly and to plan very manageable projects suited to his/her needs. Superb! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great survey of Energy
I bought this book for a class.I found this book to be a great introduction to lots of topics surrounding energy.

Sure, I could complain about a couple of things:
1. some chapters feel like they are (somewhat) updated versions from the previous edition (which they are!), and
2. some minor topics are not explained, as if it was assumed that the reader would know what it was.No, there weren't too many of those.

Product Description
* Revised and expanded edition of the classic work on chakras by the renowned Indian scholar and tantra practitioner.* Over 35,000 copies of the original edition sold.* Includes full-color illustrations of the chakras to be used with the meditation exercises in the book and provides the tools necessary to activate these centers of transformative energy.

In the ancient science of tantra, the human body is viewed as the most perfect instrument for the expression of consciousness, a perfection realized through the development of psychic centers known as chakras. Located within the cerebrospinal system, the chakras are the stage upon which the interaction between higher consciousness and desire is played out. Consequently, it is through understanding and utilizing the energies of the chakras that we ultimately reach an enlightened state of being.

In Chakras, Indian scholar and tantra practitioner Harish Johari introduces the classical principles of the chakras as well as their practical application for today. In this expanded edition, complete with new art and text, he unfolds the mysteries of these subtle centers of transformation with visualization techniques essential to a fully realized tantric practice. Unlike other books in its field, Chakras provides the tools to activate these centers of transformative energy and elevate one's intellectual knowledge to an experience of spiritual growth.

Meditating on the beautiful, full-color illustrations of each chakravitalizes the cerebrospinal centers and harmonizes the entire systemboth physically and psychically. Explanations of each chakra elaborateon the chakra's connection to elements, colors, sounds, sense and workorgans, desires, planets and deities, as well as on behavioralcharacteristics and particular effects of meditation. For scholars andspiritual aspirants of every level, Chakras is an invaluable, practicalsource of information and techniques. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Too complicated for most novices like me
Though I found certain sections very interesting and appreciated the authors detailed concepts, this book was not an easy read.First of all the Chakras themselves aren't even mentioned much until chapter 3.This is because the previous sections are talking about other things related to the chakras like prana and kundalini energies. There are many sanskrit words that can be difficult to keep straight in your mind if you haven't heard them before. In fact because I had difficulty getting into the flow of reading this book I stopped and picked up The idiots Guide to Hinduism- Read that 400 page book cover to cover- and then after that I picked up this book again and felt a lot more comfortable with it because the Idiots guide had explained all those sanskrit terms pretty well.Still, I didn't like that the book isn't concise sometimes and it's easy for your mind to glaze over. The other thing I didn't like was the pictures.I love that it had full illustrations and that it also had these illustrations again in coloring book form so that you can color them yourself for meditation.. but the pictures themselves I found somewhat distressing. Not all of them- but some.A couple of them were even plain scary looking to me. Like the one representing the root chakra which shows a woman with very wide bulging eyes staring at you. Now these pictures all have meaning to them obviously, but when you're meditating on something it shouldn't disturb you in the least and as for me- well I couldn't meditate using that.Personally I enjoy the CD that is meant to accompany this book much more than the actual book itself.Amazon sells the CD and it's basically mantras you can use for your chakra system.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best on subject
I really enjoy this book. It contains information which I failed to find in many other books, devoted to chakra's. Only thing I'd like to add is that chakra's system connected to physical body in two side way. You can begin with end you like. But greatest benefit you can get paying attention on physical, energy and chakra systems same time. Prolonged staying in "wrong" body position with attempt to meditate can be fruitless and even harming to health.

5-0 out of 5 stars educational
A very interesting book which allows you to travel to new levels of the mind - a transformation for all that read it.It allows one to find peace and serenity, and helps garner trust in oneslelf. It also allows creativity to grow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable guide and reference work
The energy vortices or charkas are located within the cerebrospinal system and are the points of interaction between the spirit and the body. Each of the 7 main charkas is also connected to certain glands in the body and therefore has a role in the hormonal system.

The psychophysical energy dealt with here is electrochemical and operates through the life force (prana) that moves through the body along the nadi channels. The seven main chakras are all connected to the main nadi. By understanding this system one can cultivate a higher state of being.

This illuminating and comprehensive book includes the following chapters: 1. The Principles of Tantra Yoga, with a section on states of consciousness; 2. Kundalini Yoga; 3. The Essentials of the Chakras; 4. Chakras, Rebirth & Spirituality. The appendix consists of extracts from the Hindu scriptures on the various stages of Yoga.

The aforementioned Chapter 3 deals with each of the chakras in turn, providing a description of each, the psychological energies that operate in it, the shape, yantra and color of each chakra, its predominating sense aspects, its seed sound (bija), number of petals, residing deity and ruling planet. It was interesting to learn about the Soma Chakra, an unnumbered energy point also called Amirta or Indu, that resides within the 7th or Sahasrara chakra.

The principles of the chakra system and practical applications are discussed in detail, including visualization techniques. The text is enhanced by beautiful color paintings of each energy vortex plus plenty of interesting black and white illustrations. The book concludes with a glossary and index.

Johari's revised and expanded edition of Chakras is a very accessible work and packed with facts. As such it is ideal for both the novice and the advanced energy worker. It provides all the information, techniques and tools to activate one's energy system for enhancing spiritual growth, balanced emotions and mental and physical well-being.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Confusing
Why Not?
This book is very confusing, it uses a lot of sanskrit words,
which just makes it impossible to comprehend.
The information is presented with no form, they're is no way to remember everything. The book has no life in it.
The book needs more pictures, and the use of english terms instead of sanskrit.
If you are trying to learn about chakras, and yoga, this isn't the book for you.
It is like a sanskrit dictionary.
The part that really bugs me, is that it says the book is about chakras, when most of it is about Yogi Meditation.

Expect for that, the book has nice pictures (but few) and very descriptive. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Passive Solar Compendium
This is the design authority for energy crisis 1.0 passive solar design.Very appropriate today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Resource
Many years ago I found Edward Mazria's 1979 "Passive Solar Energy Book" in a used book store and bought it on a whim. For years it sat waiting in my reference library. Now as a retired Engineer interested in designing an energy independent house -- it is by far, a most useful Bible.

The book's self-limitation to "passive" (rather than "active") systems -- only affects the architectural design philosophy and patterns (rules of thumb). Russel Ball's sketches illustrate basic concepts extremely well.

Charts and tables of solar insolation on surfaces at various latitudes and tilt-angles (from his computer analysis in the 70s) are extensive, detailed and applicable anywhere, for ANY solar design.

My "Professional Edition" (687 pages) includes 14 Appendices filled with reference charts and tables -- and clear plastic chart overlays for latitude and panel orientation. I only wish Mazria's underlying formulas for calculations were provided (as many now on the Internet are dangerously poorly documented.)

The book is written in a friendly and understandable format, while also filled with hard-data -- as relevant today as when written. I can't believe it hasn't been continuously re-published. If you are designing solar and find a copy, grab it without hesitation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Down to earth, practical methodology book
From a number of books I have been reading on passive energy topics, Mazria's small book is the most concrete, understandable and organized. I designed my home using the book and the forecasted energy compsumptionmatched the calculations!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference!
When I designed our first house this book was invaluable. We are now designing our second home and looked to see if there is an update.Unfortunately it has not been revised but then little has changed with thesun and mass and the book will once again be a valued resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars absolutely indispensable!
A seminal reference on the fundamentals of solar design.Easily used, yet thorough and quantitative.Should be required reading for everyone in the architecture & building design fields.Sunfall info given here is relevant to every structure ever designed -- and if you actually use it, the info *will* improve your design!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Nicole Wile does it again!
"Energy Healing For Dogs" is a well-written, easy to read book in typical Nicole Wilde style. Her knowledge of the subject is vast, and it's obvious that energy work has always been an important part of her relationships with animals. Her sense of humor is scattered throughout the book and I could hear her voice as I read it.Nicole used a few of my dogs for the pictures, and while taking them it was amazing to see how they reacted to her energy. One of my dogs has chronic pancreatitis and she tends to be uneasy in new situations. While taking the photos with Nicole, my dog quickly became very relaxed and a look of complete contentedness and relaxation came over her face.It was amazing to watch.I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to dog more with, and for, the animals in their lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Fascinating book - very informative yet easy to read. Includes scientific studies, step by step instructions and lots of pictures. Nicole's down-to-earth writing style is a joy!

5-0 out of 5 stars informative and effective
I'm not experienced with energy healing, but have been curious about the subject. I'm also a bit skeptical, what with all the "new age" stuff out there. But I'm always willing to try something that can help my dogs. I chose this particular book because it is written for everyone, from those like me who are brand new to energy work to those who are already practicing it. Wilde organizes the information in such a way that the reader can understand exactly what energy healing is and how it can benefit dogs, and then gives scientific studies to back up those claims. I appreciated that she didn't come at this subject from a "mystical" viewpoint, but instead presents energy healing as a natural skill that anyone can develop.

The chapter on canine body language was helpful so the person knows what to look for as far as the dog's comfort level, and I found the sections on sensing energy in everyday life and preparing yourself for healing to be helpful, even without the aspect of working with dogs. I was surprised to find that I could actually sense energy between my hands, and when I tried some of the techniques with my dog, I saw a definite relaxation response and felt a connection between us. My own dog tends to be nervous in general and she seemed to especially enjoy the heart center technique, which is helpful for emotional issues. A friend who had purchased this book tried the techniques too (we're practicing together) and she said her Shih Tzu, who is older and arthritic, always seems to feel a bit better after they have a session. The charts on canine chakras and color associations are interesting and have been helpful to refer back to as we practice. All things considered, I would highly recommend this book for all dog owners. If your dog has any type of medical or emotional issue you have nothing to lose, and if not, it's still a really nice way to have relaxing bonding time together, and improve your dog's general well being.

2-0 out of 5 stars Marginal, Nothing Groundbreaking
This was OK, but contained nothing new or groundbreaking - what I would call "Master of the Obvious" advice.I was really disappointed that the author even had a chapter advising that improving your looks would make you feel better. What was bad about the advice was she used as examples a man who got a face lift and a woman who paid a professional shopper to completely overhaul her wardrobe.Come on, Mira, get a grip!!!It was at this chapter that I lost all respect and to me the book lost credibility.I still can't believe she would include something so shallow.I'm just glad I didn't pay full price for this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple principles to give you more energy
Here are the teachings of this book summarized. Here is how to have more energy:

Quit worring about other peoples expectations. This is a huge drain on energy. Live up to your own standards.

Do things daily that are meaningful. What are your priorities?

Pray in a meaningful way, have a dialog with God.

Do what you really want to, stop doing what you do not like.

Imagine what you will be like with emotional energy. Make it real in your mind.

Look forward to a bright future.

Have fun in life!

Don't cry over spilt milk, move on.

Envy is poison and Guilt is Stupid.

and much more, very basic teachings that are common sense but we all need to be reminded of these things. If you want to examine these areas buy the book, if you know all of this, keep looking else where. This book is very basic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sigh of relief.....
Run, dont walk and get your credit card. You ,may think- I cant I have no energy. Well after this book, you WILL.You will literally feel the weight being lifted off your shoulders as you read. You will not believe how incredible this book is.Ever wonder why you are feeling blah?I couldnt figure it out either.I thought there was something wrong with me.I exercise, eat well, take care of myself but I felt too pooped to pop. This book will literally wrap you in a big hug and slap you upside the head as well. I could feel myself feeling lighter as I read.EVERY possible thing you could possibly think of that you think is bringing you down can be tied to emotional fatigue.Mira addresses every issue....And what to do.If that doesnt work or you cant do a particular solution, she offers another.I cant even begin to tell you how great this book is. You will feel like your old self and feel full of energy again.I feel like I can be me again.Thank you Mira!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I read lots of self help book and this is one of the very good ones.
Bought this after reading her other book "Is He Mr. Right?" which I recommended to my girlfriends. I briefed it and thought it was too simplistic so I was going to give it away. Then 1 night I couldn't sleep and read the book backwards and it was very good. So good that it was used in my meeting w. employees and it motivated them to be better. I plan to re-read, take notes, then pass this book on to others who will benefit from it. Looking forward to reading her 3rd book too "Too good to Leave, Too Bad to Stay".

5-0 out of 5 stars Attitude Is Everything!
We all know people who drag around, whine and complain and can't take the initiative to make things happen in their lives. A copy of this book might be a life saver for them.
It's a good one for even high-energy people to have on hand. Every now and then things get you down, but dipping into this book gives ideas to jump start your enthusiasm again.
When you read a section, you say "of course," but it is good to be reminded of these. Some concepts may be new to you.
Examples of these "secrets" are:
*negative people bring you down
*unfinished business is an energy drain
*embrace the present
*never envy anyone
Mostly the book benefits you by giving you perspective. We all have a lot going on in our lives, but keeping it in perspective makes it much easier to deal with. Attitude is everything! ... Read more

Product Description
An intimate glimpse into the world of ancient Peruvian spiritual practice and cosmology.

• Reveals the mysteries of the world of living energy (kawsay pacha) through intensive in-depth interviews with six Q'ero mystics.

• Explores the energetics, spirits, tools, and practices of Andean mysticism--the real story behind the fictionalized accounts in The Celestine Prophecy.

Known as the "keepers of the ancient knowledge," the Q'ero Indians of Peru are the most respected mystics of the south-central Andes. In 1996 Joan Parisi Wilcox traveled to the Andes and was able to record the mysteries of kawsay pacha, the multidimensional world of living energy, through more than 40 hours of intensive interviews with six Q'ero paqos, masters of the ancient spiritual traditions of Peru.

The Q'ero are known for having preserved the Inca spiritual tradition more purely than any other indigenous population in the Andes. The in-depth interviews presented in this book recount the direct words of these masters so readers can discover for themselves the mind and heart space of these people. Four new chapters of this revised edition focus on the work of the mesa, the Andean form of a spiritual medicine bundle, and its use as a conduit for the healing energies of nature. The mesa is called the "heart's fire" because it represents the finest energy--the energy of compassion--that a paqo cultivates while walking the sacred path. Wilcox provides instructions on how to make, activate, and work with a mesa, as well as other practical exercises showing how we can use the power of the Andean spiritual tradition in our own lives. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Written word about Living Energy - with life in the words
"Masters of the Living Energy":Joan Parisi Wilcox aptly titles her book, honoring the Andean teachers -- several Q'ero elders, mestizo paqo Americo Yabar, anthropologistJuan Nunez Del Prado, and young paqo Puma Quispe -- who are interviewed in this pioneering work, which brings elements of the indigenous cosmology of the region to those English speakers who are taking a serious interest in it.The result is not a well-defined, clear-cut, organized system. This is good. The understandings and practices of the native peoples of the Andes do not constitute a body of doctrine. There is no counsel to rule on what is approved and what is heretical.

There is though an underlying ground of experience and shared awareness, which is revealed. The book is a little bit raw.I love that Wilcox has resisted the temptation to cook it too well.As we read the accounts of a variety of elders, investigators, teachers, we're let in on the messiness of coming into a culture not our own; our minds, being jostled about by the unfamiliar details, are left to ponder the real quarry: this field of"living energy" (Kausay, in the Quechua language). The indigenous "spirituality" (our concept) does not constitute a religion. There isn't a holy book, a clergy, or other means of authority. There isn't a bureaucratic structure between man and godhead, to grant favors or levy punishment, earthly or in the afterlife. What we glimpse instead is an archaic, pre-"civil"-ized, before city, before stratification, form of awareness. Each individual in connection (munay), balance, with the elements of nature, with others in the human family, and with and within the field of energy that constitutes itself into what we experience in this everyday world as well as in non-ordinary realms.

As it turns out, although these realms, which the conventional mindset of our modern culture would classify as superstition, are not described in an objectively identical way across cultures, there do turn out to be interesting parallels among indigenous peoples around the globe. And similarly, the diverging but overlapping prescriptions of elements of the Andean experience, as chronicled by Wilcox, leave us an impression, a feeling for the experiences that these teachers share. Opening a variety of doors, and peeking behind them ... such investigation is suggestive of the methodology of awakening that indigenous shamans - journeyers, travelers, dreamers - undertake. And while reading a book about such experiences is exactly ¬not the same as having them, since mental investigation is the tool at hand for many of us, we're invited to engage that tool and see if some of this speaks to a part of us we've been missing.

For those readers already somewhat familiar, there is much to ponder here, on topics like the mesa, Andean initiations, energetic healing practices, and ways to move the kausay using one's own field.

4-0 out of 5 stars Must Read!!!!!
This is the best book on Peruvian Shamans that I have ever read.I have read many books on the subject of Shamanism and I feel this is the best yet.The interviews she has with the Q'uero and the translators, the culture of these people, all facts pertaining to their beliefs, simply an amazing read.I would recommend this book to anyway who is embarking on the path of a Shaman.

3-0 out of 5 stars Masters of the Living Energy
This is the identical book by the same author as "Keepers of the Ancient Knowledge". I have had to send it back for a refund. I was not thrilled to find I had ordered a book that I already owned, but with a new title. Nowhere was there any mention of it to alert someone of that.

But, it's a great book, and I was looking forward to more insights on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Masters of the Living Energy
This is an awesome book containing information that is very timely and much needed to save our planet.- Only one criticism - this is an updated version of Keepers of the Ancient Knowledge but the only way to find out is by reading the introduction.Unfortunately I ordered both books and had to return Keepers. It would be awesome if Amazon had a way of letting customers know about updates with different names.

Thank you.

Product Description
Theodore Taylor was one of the most brilliant engineers of the nuclear age, but in his later years he became concerned with the possibility of an individual being able to construct a weapon of mass destruction on their own. McPhee tours American nuclear institutions with Taylor and shows us how close we are to terrorist attacks employing homemade nuclear weaponry.
Amazon.com Review
Theodore B. Taylor was among the most ingenious engineers ofthe nuclear age. He created the most powerful and the smallestnuclear weapons of his time (his masterpiece, the Davy Crockett, weighedin at a svelte 50 pounds) and also spearheaded efforts to create anuclear-powered spacecraft. But in his later years, Taylor becameincreasingly concerned that compact and powerful bombs could be easilybuilt not just by nations employing experts such as himself, but by singleindividuals with modest technical ability and perseverance. McPhee tours American nuclear installationswith Taylor, and we are treated to a grim, eye-opening account ofjust how close we are to witnessing terrorist attacks using homemade nuclearweaponry. The Curve of Binding Energy is compelling writingabout an urgently important topic. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Makes me glad the cold war is over
As in many of his books,John McPhee and his capacious memory and notebook spend time with interesting people--in this case a man who begins his career designing nuclear weapons at the start of the cold war. Also like others of his books, our intest is captured as much by the personalities as the subject.Besides meeting a fascinating and hightly idiosyncractic physicist, I learned enough nuclear physics from this little book to really liven up my 9th grade physics classes.I gave 4 stars because the book is necessarily dated, but I'm awfully glad we are a step or two further from the brink than some experts at the time expected, since we did not go down the road to using plutonium in nuclear reactors. On the other hand, the threat of terrorism is greater than it seemed then.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Info on Nukes
The Curve of Binding Energy by John McPhee is just a terrific read for anyone interested in the twin topics of nuclear energy and the nuclear bomb. We've all read stories about the negative environmental effects of storing used nuclear fuel, but you rarely are made aware of the other negative externality of used nuclear fuel; the threat to national security.

In this quickly-read, reportorial book written at the end of the seventies, McPhee follows the thoughts of Ted Taylor, a nuclear physicist and bomb designer.Taylor provides accounts of his work at Los Alamos and how the development of the nuclear bomb evolved from Fat Man and Little Boy to Super Oralloy and Mike. This is very interesting stuff with descriptions of bomb material, explosive yields, fission and fusion.Taylor was clearly conflicted with his work around the bomb and subsequent to leaving Los Alamos has devoted his expertise to developing safeguards and to raising awareness of the threat of a rogue bomb. This is where the connections are made between nuclear energy and nuclear weaponry.Much of the spent nuclear fuel stored in various physical states can be used to develop a workable nuclear bomb.Taylor focuses on the weaknesses in protective measures and the vulnerability of these supplies. An interesting point that is brought up near the end of the book is the comparative figures invested in fission research and coal power versus the amount of investment in fusion research (a much cleaner, less dangerous alternative). It leaves you seeing no reason why the government would resist funding a Manhattan Project around fusion technology. While no one can debate the usefulness of nuclear energy, especially given current conditions, it is important to remember the negative externalities associated with this power platform.

As with any McPhee book, I'm amazed at the level of detail he is able to provide which leads you to a much better understanding of a topic you may have known very little about before. The book also seems very topical as economic pressures will now encourage further development of nuclear power resources.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking and enlightening
The book is written by a respected author who appears to have become enamored with Theodore Taylor, an nuclear weapons designer. The two traveled to many places together, and the author plied Taylor with questions. The setting was the early 1970s, and nuclear weapons information was still secret, and the nuclear industry still appeared to be viable. Taylor did his best to answer questions and explain nuclear physics without violating classification. Since then, much has changed, and today Taylor could be more specific. When I wrote my first novel, a story based upon gun-type atomic weapons, I would Goggle an item to see what was in the public domain before using the material in my book. Frankly, I was amazed and frightened by the amount of nuclear weapons data available on the internet.

THE CURVE OF BINDING ENERGY must be viewed in this context. Also, the author, John McPhee, had to record and then present in a understandable manner, the technical information provided by a remarkable man. The author does not have a degree in physics or nuclear physics, and thus can be excused for not understanding some of what Taylor told him.

The book contains a wide ranging view, from Dr. Taylor's perspective, of the early nuclear industry and weapons program. Most of the errors I found are unimportant, since only people in the nuclear weapons program would recognize them. These I attribute to the author not understanding Taylor's remarks. I do take exception to Dr. Taylor's obsession with plutonium as a source of nuclear weapons materials for terrorists. Plutonium is the wrong choice for complex technical reasons. Should a terrorist obtain weapons grade plutonium (Pu-239), he would most likely accidentally assemble a critical mass, a self sustaining nuclear fission reaction--the equivalent of a nuclear reactor melt down. In other words, a small Chernobyl.

Dr. Taylor grossly oversimplifies explosive implosions spheres. He talks about fabricating one from TNT or C-4, using bowls as a mold. Pure fantasy. He also describes casting plutonium components, half spheres for the "pit" of an implosion device. Yes, in general terms that is how it is done, but he left out a large amount of details. Anyone attempting to follow his crude outline will meet with an untimely end, and so would the neighbors. Perhaps that was his intention.

Taylor styles himself as the inventor of several innovative small, high yield nuclear warheads. He looks at nuclear weapons from an inventors perspective, while I look at the weapons from an engineer's and users' perspective. I do not recall coming across his name, but since most of my dealing were with Sandia Corporation and the AEC, this in not surprising. I am, however, familiar with the weapons he mentions. I will only point out one minor mistake: the Mk-41 was similar in physical size to the Mk-17, and had a yield of 25 MT. It was the highest yield nuclear weapon in the U.S. inventory.

Taylor's major concern centered on the isotope he worked with--Pu-239. As stated in the book, Pu-239 is superior to U-235 for small, high yield nuclear weapons. Pu is a very toxic, hazardous metal to work with. For example, plutonium has five phases, while most elements have three: solid, liquid, and gas. Recovering Pu-239 from power reactor spent fuel rods is extremely difficult and expensive. Plutonium used in nuclear weapons is produced in a special type of nuclear reactor, a breeder reactor. Iran has one breeder reactor operating and another under construction. Dr. Taylor's warning about nuclear weapons proliferation is right on target.

Much of the book is devoted to the danger of theft of nuclear materials from poorly guarded storage facilities. If Taylor were discussing these issues with McPhee today, I believe he would place emphases on two different issues: poorly guarded spent nuclear fuel rods stored in cement pigs at nuclear reactors, the ideal source of radioactive materials for a dirty bomb; and, nuclear programs in North Korea, Pakistan, and Iran.

Today's terrorist nuclear threat is uranium nuclear weapons--gun-type U-235 devices that a terrorist can make if provided with a sufficient amount of highly enriched uranium (90% U-235). Dr. Taylor mentions the Little Boy (page 220), the simple gun-type nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima, and gun-type nuclear bombs several times. He, Dr. Taylor, finally gets to the real danger on pages 189-191. In 1973, Dr. Taylor, nor I, could envision a world where a rouge nations (North Korea, Iran, and Pakistan) would obtain the ability to produce weapons grade U-235 and Pu-239. Our concern was the Soviet Union and China. Weapon design information did not exist on the internet--there was no internet--and the thought of a nation purposefully providing U-235 and plans for a simple gun-type nuclear device to terrorists was beyond comprehension. Today this situation exists.

Today, it is possible to take the Little Boy design, and by incorporating commercially available components, build a nuclear device with a yield several times the Little Boy. A that can be disassembled and imported as parts into the U.S. or any other nation.

The CURVE OF BINDING ENERGY is a thought provoking, enlightening, if out of date, book. Reading it will be time well spent.

3-0 out of 5 stars OLD book needs massive update, still interesting
First and foremost this book was published in 1973.Any book about nuclear security that's 35 years old will have some obvious gaps but this one makes many bold predictions about the growth in nuclear power that obviously did not happen.
There is quite a bit to learn here though and anyone interested in how nuclear materials might be used for terrorism would do well to read this.
I found it very enlightening and honest and a good read on some reasons why nuclear power could be a problem in the future.Truly though, this is a book in need of a major rewrite and updating. The same material covered once again would be very worth reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars books can kill
I picked up this book to learn something about the risks associated with nuclear technology in the hands of terrorist states. What I read instead was an unexpected cautionary tale about the risks of irresponsible journalism.

The Curve of Binding Energy is an early piece by the talented essayist, John McPhee.McPhee explores the psyche and experience of a nuclear engineer, Ted Taylor, who in the 1950's made substantial contributions to the miniaturization of fission bombs and then became an advocate for "nuclear safeguards" - i.e. methods and policies to keep weapons-grade material or bomb-making technology out of criminal or terrorist hands.

Mr. Taylor's involvement in the book is highly ironic.Like most in the nuclear weapons community, he originally justified the work for its deterrent potential.Looking back two decades later, Taylor tells McPhee that the original rationale was naive. But unconsciously applying the same logic, Taylor was now willing to publicize all that he knew about the easiest ways to make a cheap A-bomb in the hope that proliferation of that knowledge would scare governments into adopting more effective safeguards.

Throughout the book, McPhee relates conversations in which he pumped Taylor for technical details about bomb construction. Each time, Taylor states that he has gone into just as much detail as he can on various subjects without breaching official secrets. This of course is nonsense.Any attempts to delineate the bounds of official secrets, and especially the juxtaposition of related methods and means are expressly forbidden by the security oath that Taylor once swore. If a terrorist nuclear bomb is ever detonated, Taylor will bear direct personal responsibilty.

Fortunately, the value of Taylor's technical insights is much less that McPhee implies. He reports many kind comments about Taylor from distinguished nuclear physicists who worked on the same projects. But none of these scientists express particular respect for his technical skills. And at least one of Taylor's important judgments in this book - that successful fission detonations are easy to achieve - was proved untrue last year when a DPRK demonstration fizzled.

No, to date no one has been killed or injured by one of Ted Taylor's creations. But the same cannot be said of John McPhee. The most intriguing details in The Curve of Binding Energy are its repeated speculations about the attractiveness of the WTC towers as terrorist targets and their vulnerability to destruction from a sub-nuclear explosion. It appears highly likely that this book was the original motivation behind O. A. Rahman's truck-bomb attack in 1993 and K. S. Mohammad's follow-on attack in 2001.

This is not a personal criticism of John McPhee. The point is that journalists - even great journalists - plying their own craft can do just as much unintended damage as any of their usual suspects. ... Read more

Jonny Bowden's health books are very informative and fun to read. He definitely can motivate you. His books are highly recommended. If you work with Jonny, you can change your health and your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great way to get motivated
This book had some very simple and easy tips for boosting energy. Some ideas were simply reminders of things we should all know but probably don't do but nonetheless it was good to be reminded. I particularly liked the section on the different natural supplements and their different effecs.

4-0 out of 5 stars A useful book to boost your energy
This book contain many useful tips on how to boost your energy level. It covers many areas of your life that may affect your energy level like
- what to eat and drink
- how to get quality sleep
- how to exercise
- taking supplements
- detox
- controlling your emotions and stress level
Although I have tried many ways to combat fatigue in the past, this book provides other means to do so.
Sometimes when I am tired, I just open one page and apply the tip in that page for the day. I will highlight those tips that works for me. This is how I am going to try all 150 tips.

To me, the energy level determines one's success or failure.

1-0 out of 5 stars Take one giant step back...and think.
Doctor Jonny gives sage advise, and a myriad of Jonny fans write puff pieces to his eternal wisdom and energetic good looks.

The advise Jonny gives is wildly contradicting in spots.(Why do none of the other reviewers pick this up?!)He pumps out advice on nutritional supplementation as quickly as a late night exercise program pumps out energetic promises. The advice may be good in places but this type of "150 ways to boost energy" is geared for an author to overstep science and understep where caution for certain individuals are concerned.

True, this is true for many other authors too, but there is little reason (besides money) for Jonny Bowden to write such a book at this point. It makes his earlier works suspect.Or so it seems to me.

Should the book be given two stars for the bits of advice which are good and well written?I think that most people will read this and glaze over reading how THIS nutritional supplement will do x for you.... and how "some new research suggests" that this other nutritional supplement will do the same thing... and how "there is more evidence" that XYZ will do these things... and (times 150).

Most simply won't have the background to know what is a good approach to take.

Books like this make a lot of money, and get people in trouble as they experiment.People then go to their doctors with "ringing in their ears," with irritable bowel and worse, with headaches that won't stop... and these self-experimenters admit to trying this new regimen of high dosage mega-cure-all pills and potions. But with that warning, see a well schooled MD with lots of dietary background (most have virtually none, and dieticians are more political action groups touting pseudo-science than you would care to believe, go and get solid advice from a good medical doctor who understands nutrition, and there are some things that can help with energy, especially for Baby Boomers who are fueling this craze.

2-0 out of 5 stars Kind of a Hack Job
I enjoyed the author's other books, but this one disappoints. What is mostly lacking is a critical eye to what's included--you get the sense that in order to reach his 150 item quota, the author's included a lot of dubious treatments and approaches without researching them very carefully (e.g., weight lifting supplements that have been shown to have serious side effectss (even the guys on "t-nation" stopped taking them), hormone replacement for men, the "subluxation" concept that used to be prevalent in chiropractic medicine, but has been abandoned by most ethical chiropracters).

And while the breezy writing style is still sometimes fun, there's a bit too much name dropping (and promotion of friends' businesses).Overall, what comes through is a rushed effort to crank out another best-seller. ... Read more
