Any book in its ninth edition has already proven its place to its audience - Sommerville's text has earned its reputation as a standard in the field. This book's twenty-six chapters cover four major topics: introductory material, dependability and security, advanced software techniques, and project management.The first section include basic life cycle phases of requirements, modeling, architecture, implementation, testing, and ongoing support, along with smattering of the social processes in which these activities take place.

Advanced topics, the third section, include modern topics such as aspect-oriented programming (AOP), component systems, and embedded applications. AOP seems to be moving in from the fringes of software development (Aspect-Oriented Programming with the e Verification Language gives lots of good reasons for that, despite being tangential to normal software). Still, object orientation dominates current practice by a wide margin and gets only minor mention, so I find the emphasis misplaced. Likewise, the embedded section under-represents the 99% of all processors that don't run Windows or Linux, i.e., the ones in your microwave, digital watch, CD player, car air bags, sewing machine and cell phone. Still, mentioning it at all puts this ahead of many comparable texts.

So does the second section, on dependability and security. As computers become more pervasive and take on more life-critical applications, these issues only grow in importance. As with other sections, however, topics that represent many people's entire careers get only 20 or 30 pages here. A book of this breadth necessarily sacrifices depth, however, so I can't complain too loudly. Likewise, the section on project management issues could be a book of its own, like Braude's Software Engineering: An Object-Oriented Perspective.

Real discussion of this book's content would take more space than I have here, and would soon get into matters that depend on specific applications or on personal opinion and experience. I found one pervasive weakness in this book, however, a weakness shared by every other software development and engineering text I've seen. Standards and regulatory requirements get only scant mention. In the real world, software design and implementation happens in a complex environment of interlocking standards that affect nearly every aspect of software design and implementation. I applaud Sommerville for mentioning Sorbanes-Oxley (despite the book's international audience). Still, the hundreds of applicable standards from the IEEE, ECMA, ISO, ITU, NIST, and dozens of other organizations warrant a chapter of their own. I look forward to seeing that chapter, in this book if not in some other.

PS: I'm wrong a lot, but that cover photo could credibly be MIT's Stata center under construction. If so, in restrospect now that it's completed, that wouldn't be the most uplifting choice of engineering images. ... Read more

This handy little reference is equation and information dense. Basic and oft used engineering equations are organized in a simple way.

I bought this for the PE in April, 2010. I used it to answer one question... which makes it worth the price right there.

In my day to day practice, I use it for frame engineering. This one is a keeper.

This book provides a wide variety of structural formula, both the basic and the more involved. It provides basic guidance on how to approach solving structural problems. I did notice that the preference in units is metric, but the book provides straight forward conversion from american units.

This work provides information on such things as geometric sections, beams, trusses, arches, plates, etc., often under various loading conditions. Its chapter on frame analysis is notable. Also featured are such things as building foundations, pipes and tunnels, soils, retaining structures, etc.

This is a very handy little book.Properties of plane areas, basic vibration, beam formulas, plates w/ various b.c.'s, foundations, frames, arches, earth retaining, pipes & tunnels.Think of it as a specialized, watered down Roark's with more than a few hidden gems.It was extremely useful in my exam and is still very used as a quick reference or for basic first passes and superpositions for more complicated problems.

I humbly suggest that the review mentioning units is unfounded.The book is unitless as far as I've seen, aside from the examples.The examples use metric units.

This book came to me in perfect physical condition so no complaints with that process.My complaint lies within the content of the book.I have noticed that there are way to many mistakes in the book. Especially in the problems at the end of each chapter and the answers they give in the back of the book. You can never trust the answer they put in the back of the book because on several occations I have found the answer to be wrong.Not only that, the graphical representations and charts are way to cluttered and appear to have several examples in one figure.All of the graphs need grid lines because they are all difficult to read.

I have an 8 year old son who is seriously addicted to Lego building blocks and anything else that can be built.I am also a cub scout den leader and that makes me pretty good at understanding what 8 and 9 year old boys like.

They like this book!It answers some basic questions, that very subtley provide some basic engineering principles.What is BEST about this book is that every chapter has several simple projects that your child and you can do together.Again, simple, but it is suprising how educational this kind of fun can be.

I've worked as an engineer in the real world for over 4 years and have a small library of science and engineering texts, including about half a dozen EE texts, all of which are superb. I've never seen anyone devote two full chapters to resistor networks, nearly 150 pages!! In the real world engineers DESIGN circuits, not spend all day reverse engineering resistive networks, pretending they don't know the difference between a battery and a resistor! We drew circuit loops in jr high, I think we can move on to linear designs in college. Like I said, engineers write good engineering texts, not university professors.

The book received was the correct book, however it was a misprinted copy. The book I received had pages 31 through 78 printed twice and was missing all pages before 31. I ordered the book before my class started so did not notice the pages were missing in time to return the book.

Its a good textbook for outlining theory and formulas (5 stars for sure) but when it comes to exercises it is terrible (0 stars).The author makes up the most obscure complex problems that make you beat your brain out starting with the first problem in the exercise set.Dynamics is applying math and most math text's that I have used practice repetition to drive the concepts home while progressively making the problems harder.This text cuts right to the chase expecting the student to have a full grasp of the concepts just covered as well as remembering the every chapter prior.It is a completely unrealistic approach to teaching the material. You'll see that EVERY problem is a story problem.There are no basic problems of calculation to help memorize formula's or to get your feet wet.Its balls to the walls from problem 1.

Other than that its great, but I'll never get back the hair I lost figuring out the problems.

A great collection of both fundamental and advanced probability conceptsas applied to civil engineering design situations.This textbook was extremely useful during my undergraduate and graduate courses in probability as well as in more specialized courses in wind and seismic engineering.More importantly, I still find myself using this text now that I am out of college.

Wounderfully written textbook on a classic topic in engineering that will withstand the changes in technology and still prevail as some of the most important fundamentals in design methodology.

Designed as a textbook for university (or college) it starts with recommended course emphasis suggestions - very interesting. Because it is aiming at students the text is logical and concise. As is almost traditional in such texts, the field is defined and mapped - an insecurity within the profession I find irritating but is useful given the intended audience.

The entire volume is divided into three major sections, Mollecular and Cellular Principles, Physiological Principles, Biomedical Engineering, each with several chapters. The sections appear to cover the whole body of knowledge but the individual chapters do not. Because the book is part of a series this is acceptable. For example, there is little material on the large, important and ubiquitous area of computing and informatics but there are chapters on Immunity, Biosensors and Imaging. It is no Bronzino (The Biomedical Engineering Handbook, Third Edition - 3 Volume Set) after all, but there are several appendices with a nice collection of the very useful and the very idiosyncratic.

Each chapter concludes with a summary, some useful references, nomenclature, suggested further reading, links to the web, some short questions and detailed problems - classic textbook style, but again well organised and very useful for students and instructors alike.

A particularly interesting feature is the inclusion of "Profiles in BME" - sidebars with mini-biographies of people engaged in Biomedical Engineering. The authors have chosen a wide variety of careers to highlight and included nearly one in each chapter. These insights will be useful to students and practitioners alike - although it seems a little self-indulgence of the author to include himself as one of the first profiles.

Similar sidebars that focus on more complex topics are very helpful. Spread evenly through the volume these include topics such as, Thermodynamics of Chemical Reactions, Muscle Mechanics, Enzyme Kinetics, Chemotherapy and many more. A small criticism is that these boxes should be listed together somewhere for later reference.

The text is rich with many photographs, images, tables, sharts and illustrations - unfortunately, the majority in black and white. In a slightly old-fashioned way, the colour plates are gathered into the centre of the book.

Overall, the book covers a broad range of topics with clarity and style. As an introduction it is a fine work. If you're hoping it will be a comprehensive guide to the whole field (which it is not intended to be) it will disappoint. As a "drop in summary/refresher" it wil prove very useful. It is a book for Biomedical Engineers in the broadest sense - Clinical Engineers may lust for more current equipment detail and may look to Carr and BrownIntroduction to Biomedical Equipment Technology (4th Edition) or David in Clinical Engineering (Principles and Applications in Engineering).

Never-the-less, I like it a lot, and I am sure will find myself refering my junior engineers to it in years to come.

About what the book covers: I was looking for a book on pop-ups. The title suggests as much but it's mainly about paper engineering. And it describes this pretty well I guess.. it's just not what I was looking for..

So the 3 stars are for the quality of the book, not its contents.. that is just bad luck. In a brick and mortar store I would never have bought it.. not even for the price I payed, which all in all (with P&P) is about 14 dollars US.

I read this book while taking a masters course in system engineering.Over all, the book was clear and written in a format that allowed for self study.This was very helpful for me since my course was primarily online.The material was slightly redundant.The central thesis of the book was the fact that a system engineer needs to conduct the proper upfront planning as well as establish clear processes to ensure successful system development/delivery.The goal of System Engineering is to provide a system that meets the customer's need/requirements.This book introduces how this can be accomplished through a repeated process.
The redundant nature of the text requires a lot of cross reference (page flipping) between chapters in order to match the text description with the figure discussed.The book is more managerial then technical; most laymen will be able to read it without assistance from an instructor.Expanded explanations of reliability engineering as well as ID/prioritization of Technical Performance Measures would have been helpful.This textbook provided a good introduction to the SE process.I highly recommend this text book if you work as a System Engineer or Project Engineer for the Navy or Marines.This book references and will support their standard acquisition process.I give this book 4 of 5 stars.

This book (or something similar) really should be required for anyone graduating with an engineering degree who intends to work in industry.

Systems engineering is essentially the function that oversees any design effort to ensure that the resulting design does what it's supposed to. As such requirements are the bread and butter of systems engineering. The most visible job of the system engineer then is to turn the customer's desires into functional requirements, and then turn those requirements into something that can be designed to based on the system architecture the designers / system engineers prefer.

For example, consider if you have a city with a river through it and the local government wants to develop a system to carry cars across the river. The system engineer would first turn that desire into functional requirements. These would include requirements like: No. of cars per hour that can transit, can't interfere with riverborne ship traffic, growth in traffic that can be absorbed etc. From this you have something that you can verify design concepts against to see if they satisfy the customer desires, but actually can't pull out the ruler and calculators just yet. Systems engineers / designers would then consider options like a suspension bridge, a ferry system, or a tunnel beneath the river. Each of these system options would have their own architectures and the functional requirements would have to be translated into different design requirements for each. The bridge would have to be so high to allow ship traffic and have so many lanes and bear so much live weight. The ferry system would need so many ferries of such and such a carrying capacity. The tunnel would have to have so many lanes, would require such and such a ventilation capacity, etc. The systems engineer would be involved in determining which of these architectures would best suit customer needs, and then turn the functional requirements into the design to requirements so design work can begin in earnest.

Of course as design work continues and large components are broken down into smaller and smaller design components the systems engineer continues to guide the choice of how to configure the lower tier of design components, and to allocate design to requirements for them. If the system engineer has done their job right when all the design components are integrated into each other the resulting system really does what it was intended to do and meets the functional requirements.

This book tells you in a very clear, completely comprehensive, and extremely well laid out manner how to do this. It also tells you why you should do this, and how it is beneficial. The writing is straightforward, always to the point, and easily understood. The topic is pertinent and can help you understand how systems are actually engineered in the real world, a very rare and very appreciated breath of fresh air in engineering textbooks.

The author also covers all the aspects of systems engineering planning, including scheduling, budgeting, contracting, and system verification / validation, etc. Systems engineering is largely a management function so this information is interesting and necessary for the subject.

This book will be extremely helpful for engineers of any stripe who want to put their work into context, systems engineers for how to do what their supposed to do, and for contractors and government purchasers to implement processes to guarantee that they get a system that does what they want. (Provided what they want is feasible of course!)

Certainly recommended and a book that I use frequently for reference.

This book is aimed at the system engineer who is involved in product design and engineering or involved in government contracting and must produce system engineering management plans (SEMPs). It is also applicable to organizations who have or are planning to use the capability maturity model (CMM) to improve their effectiveness. For the intended audience this book is both comprehensive and complete.There are eight chapters, each followed by case studies, questions and problems, and six appendices.

It starts with a foundation of the basics, such as definitions, system engineering life cycle, analysis and concurrent engineering.It then builds upon this foundation by addressing all of the elements of a well-managed system engineering program:integrated product and process development, TQM, configuration management, support and logistics.Each element is discussed in detail and placed into the context of a total system engineering environment.

The chapter on system design requirements is particularly complete and covers every facet of this discipline, including reliability, maintainability, safety, software, etc.There is a lot of good material here, which is reinforced by the next chapter that covers design tools and methods.The design process is concluded by a chapter on design review and evaluation, which is a foundation of good quality practices as well as a well-written SEMP.

The real heart of the book starts in chapter 6, which covers SE program planing.It covers program requirements, the SEMP itself and provides a statement of work. It then provides a complete work breakdown structure for implementing system engineering functions and tasks. This chapter provides a risk management plan that is well thought out and serves as an excellent template. It also addresses the CMM for systems engineering. Much of this material has been superseded by the Software Engineering Institute's CMMI that now covers system engineering, software engineering and integrated product and process development.This is not a problem because the book's coverage of the CMM-SE is consistent with the material in the CMMI.

The final two chapters, addressing system engineering organization and supplier/sub contractor management are to the point and contains a lot of valuable information.

Had the author provided this book in soft copy on an accompanying diskette or CD ROM it would be a best seller on the Beltway because of the time it would save in developing a company-wide system engineering procedure manual.

Consulting companies and IT departments would also greatly benefit from this book because of the structured approach it provides for planning and managing system integration.Unlike their cousins in the government contracting and CMM domains, they generally approach system engineering and integration in a loose fashion that too often results in cost and schedule overruns, or project cancellation.By following the approach outlined in this book consulting companies and IT departments would find that technical, cost and schedule risks would be identified early and controlled, and that the design, integration and implementation of complex systems would enjoy a higher rate of success. This is especially true when multiple vendors are involved in an integration project - the material in chapters 1 (integrated process teams) and 8 (subcontractor management) provides a foundation for managing cross-functional teams. we used this book for undergrad se classes i taught.
unfortunately there are not a lot of alternatives.
(we *also* used buede for another class and mandel for project management etc).

the authors know their stuff, unfortunately some of it got lost in translation. perhaps because a lot of the material got translated from govt publications.

this is more like a handbook than a textbook.for the handbook user just get sage's tome.for a textbook -- well this is least worst for an intro to SE.for supporting areas other books are better.

what is good is excellent.but what is bad is frustrating.
they tried to cover way too much in one book and got confused with SE and OR and management techniques and quality and a whole bunch of other stuff that is really tangential to SE.

and the materialgets covered at uneven levels of detail so it is not a good handbook nor a good textbook just a good pile of notes on a lot of se related stuff.

previous editions had many errors and did not come with any answers to the problems, many of which were confusing as stated.

the first part of the book really introduces SE.The rest of the book is for review by someone who has specialised in the areas they cover.

The book would be much better if they concentrated on SE and left the other stuff to other books.i have not checked with the publisher for current availability,but previously there was no instructors guide and no answers to the questions.that is a big drawback for classroom use.

this would be best for an experienced person who wanted to review SE or get an introduction to a specialised topic relating to SE.

the dsmc/dau se handbook is (was?) free on the internet from various govt sites and does a great job of introducing SE.you should look at that resource before buying this book.indeed, unless you are using it in a class you might just want to borrow this from a library instead of buying it.

Very much the 30,000 foot view of systems engineering. I picked this book up because I saw it referred to all over the place, and assumed that it was reasonably definitive. Sadly, it is not. What the book does do is give the reader a reasonably good high-level overview of systems engineering in general, and of some of the techniques involved in estimating the "ilities" of a given system design. However, the level of detail on any one subject area is very light, and the bias of the book is very much toward DoD-style systems engineering. A good book for systems engineering managers. System designers should also seek out Wymore's "Model-Based Systems Engineering" for a thorough understanding of requirements and design.

I took a course in school that used this book and I really enjoyed the book and what it taught me about systems engineering.The authors do a great job of walking the student through the systems engineering process, and ginving a general overview of the steps.The later chapters expand upon this overview to give the detail needed to actually carry out the process.The last part of the book expands upon the "-ilities" of systems engineering which are the authors partiucalr areas of interest.I think anyone interested in systems engineering should get this book, its a great resource.A few things I didn't like was the constant referencing of graphs and figures from previous chapters, it really inhibits my learing when I have to keep flipping back and forth to follow a train of thought.There are also a few chunks of the book that are very, very hard to follow the logical train of thought and require meticulious attention to the detail, and often require rereading.I'm hoping the authors with put out an updated and expanded edition soon, that compensates for these shortfalls. ... I used this text in junior year for a one-semester advanced math class. However, this is the biggest textbook I have owned- little of it is applicable to any one class. However, it is fairly clear and readable as mathematics texts go and I have found it to be an excellent reference for independent use afterwards. It explains many useful techniques for confronting ODEs, PDEs, fourier analyses, and introductory complex analysis. It is clear enough to start practice problems without a professor having to tell you how any problems can be solved. It does not have the most detail, but it shouldn't be- It is a huge comprehensive book, and for further details you probably need a very specialized source anyway.

I never received the book.About a month after I ordered
the book, I got a box which had been opened (and resealed)
before it got to me and no longer contained the book.
I verified that seller did drop it of at USPS in California
for shipment to South Carolina.There was a USPS label on
the box saying they had opened it and resealed it.No
one seems to know what happened to the book.

I suppose the problem is the USPS and not the seller; hard
to say for sure.

Security Engineering 2nd ed. by Ross Anderson offers an accessible yet comprehensive introduction to the discipline.Chapters are modular in nature so it's not required to go straight through the book.Amateur to mid-level explanations of important security engineering topics (encryption, emsec, etc) are very illuminating.

My only complaint is that the editing seems a little rushed.For example there are several obvious typographical errors and sometimes the same sentence or choice of words are repeated verbatim when the author refers back to examples of a particular concept.

This book has been the definitive guide for my embedded and distributed cryptosystems projects thus far. The writing is good--easy and fun to read. The content is incredible, and Bruce Schneier's approval doesn't hurt. I don't think I've ever learned as much in as few pages before.

Excellent book so far (I have not finished reading it yet) however my one criticism is that there is NO cd available.No excuse for that in this day and age.If you are going to produce a book with 27 chapters, it is going to be big and bulky.It's also going to decrease the likelihood of someone carrying the book around with them.Having the ability to print a chapter at a time would allow me to read it on the commute into work or at lunch.I even called the publisher and they said no cd or ebook is available.This is why I only gave it three stars. ... If you don't already have a favorite book you go to for reference, this one will cover most of your bases during the exam. I should have walked in with just a calculator and this book.

It is also OK to jog your memory as you study the topics, but if you didn't understand the topic when you were in school, you won't understand it from this book either.

I like this book overall. It is very well organized, indexed, and contains just the right depth of information to act as a reference. The practice exam based on this book is way harder than the real thing. I would definitely recommend it as a reference. For studying, I think it has too much depth - you will end up spending way more time than needed and be over-prepared. You are better off taking a prep class at a local universityI bought this book near the end of my study for the PE exam - about a month before the test. However, it made looking up information so much easier than my other references, that I used it as my primary reference during the exam (along with Machinery's Handbook, and notes from a preparation class).

Lindeburg has done a great job at pulling together everything you'll see on the PE Mechanical exam.The format of the 12th edition is better than the 11th.The 11th included extra problems at the end of each chapter.Though this is helpful for studying, it clutters up the book and adds extra pages to thumb through during the exam.Edition 12 moved the problems at the end of the chapter to another book ("Practice Problems for the Mechanical Engineering PE Exam" - which I also recommend).

The book isn't perfect.You will find errata.Most of it is covered in the errata sheets on ppi2pass.Take an hour to look at the errata sheet and transfer the corrections to the book.

All in all, if you read each chapter and then work the associated practice problems, you should be able to pass the exam.The nice thing about this book is the fact that it is up to date with the exam.This is not true of some of the review classes you can take.I paid $1,750 for a class at Renssalaer in Hartford.I should have just taken the money and flushed it down the drain.The class was out-dated (the teacher kept giving examples of problems he remembered from when each question was 1 hour long).He also kept teaching us subjects and then saying "You probably won't see this on the exam".Talk about a waste of time.Also, the class claimed that the Lindeburg book was the official text.It wasn't.The official text was a 3 ring binder full of the teachers barely readable (they were copies of copies of copies of copies....) notes.Anyway, enough ranting about that.If you want to take a class, make sure you talk to someone who's taken it before, and make sure it teaches out of the Lindeburg book.

Also, as soon as you start studying, buy an approved calculator.It will be your best friend during the exam and you will need to be 100% familiar with it.Use it every day and get use to its functions.I have the Casio fx-115 ES.It served me well during the FE exam and the PE exam.Also, buy 2 of them.You must have an identical spare!You don't want your main calculator to die during the exam and then try to use a calculator you found laying in the bottom of your junk drawer.It will slow you down if you're not 100% familiar with it.

This book had good points and bad points.

The Good:

Excellent review content
In combination with the practice problems, this is a very good preparation tool

The Bad:

- No practice problems in the text itself.
- PPI2Pass is no longer a friendly web sight and is entirely there to make money, be prepared to spend a lot if you want to use the site content
- Book Binding was TERRIBLE.my book was literally falling apart after 8 months of use.I have college textbooks that saw far heavier use and abuse over the course of 2 years that still have all of their pages.I am currently holding my pages in with scotch tape.
- There are equivalent products available from ASME that are better constructed and about the same price.Additionally, their video exam prep course is about $100 less than PPI's equivalent study course and is actually readily available

In hind sight, I would have opted for the ASME solution and never have gone with the PPI product. ... Read more

This edition of Human Factors Engineering is a brilliant read. It uses excellent examples that play out the content in story based scenarios. My only criticism is that it may be a bit too informative, meaning there is so much information it is kind of a whirlwind to read through. This however may contribute to its use in a widespread industry where the reader may be an engineer, architect, digital/clothing designer, etc. Great book and I recommend it to anyone interested in Human Factors Design.

My very first human factors course used this textbook, and it does an excellent job introducing and instilling the basics. It inspired me to pursue a human factors career, eight years later cumulating in a Ph.D. I now work in human-centered hardware design and find this the resource I go to most frequently to look up fundamental human factors principles. Each chapter also includes a list of resources cited in the text that I consult for more in-depth information on the wide array of topics this text covers.

This textbook is written for any human factors engineering application purpose, but did appear to be slightly biased towards aviation. Maybe that's because I used it for a Human Factors in Aviation course for my graduate work.

The book has a LOT of information, so much that it can be difficult to read at times, but I'd rather have too much than not enough.

The biggest complaint I have on the book is the authors diagrams. It is presented with a lot of diagrams and drawings to explain the point. Having a STRONG background in aviation, including 21 years in Naval Aviation, 11 of that as a FLight Engineer, and having taken HF in Aviation in my undergraduate stuidies, I can say that there were many times when I understood the material, but didn't understand the drawing or diagram. They're just too confusing sometimes.

All-in-all, I thought the book was very good. The examples used at the beginning of the chapters were helpful in establishing a baseline with which to establish the lesson material.

I ordered this book for a Master's class I'm taking and been a bit of a let down.Shipping was a breeze, and the content of the book is good, but the book is painfully boring.The pages are all black and white, and I have to force myself to continue on to each new paragraph.In general, I'd rather sit down and repeatedly stick pencils in my eyes than sit down and learn from this book about Human Factors.

This is a great book for engineers in their senior/4th year of school or engineers who are entering the work force.But, if you've long passed those stages in your life, then its still a beneficial book to read too.He does a good job at explaining how to be better at the so called "soft skills" where our training as engineers is (typically) lacking.He claims that, although schools are great at teaching the science, math, and all around technical side of engineering, they are usually poor at teaching these soft skills (writing, presenting, etc.)There are great tips in the book on how to be more effective at meetings, how to be better at managing your time, relieving stress, etc.Whats great is the chapters are (mostly) unrelated so you can read them in any order that you choose... In fact, he recommends it.I have personally used some of his tips on "being more effective at meetings" and can say that they have helped me be a better at my job.Lastly, he doesn't orient the book toward a specific type of engineering, but to all engineers in general.I would recommend this book to any graduating engineers who are going into the "real world".

Every engineering graduate should definitely read this book. It is concise, lucid, and to-the-point.

I do not quite agree with the title in its entirety. We do learn quite a few of these things at engineering schools. However, in our relentless pursuit of gaining technical knowledge, we keep learning these things at a much lower priority. Chapter 15, "Having Fun" describes something, which is actually quite real. I have personally experienced this, where our professors would sometimes force us to go ahead and have some fun. Carl Selinger mentions many such important things, which the engineer needs to be good at including writing and communication skills.

Carl Selinger starts by referring to Dale Carnegie's famous book "How to make friends and influence people". This makes the reader, develop very high expectations about the book. Despite his best effort, his style does not live up to the standards of Carnegie. Unlike Carnegie's book, there are not many third-person examples or experiences, which have been discussed. This sometimes lends a preaching style to the writing, which can become annoying.

For someone who is inexperienced, freshly graduated and has never been taught any of the things which the book discusses about, will find it difficult to comprehend and realize the importance of learning these skills. This is primarily because Carl largely mentions personal experiences. A naïve reader might critique the book as being too one-sided. Overall, the book is very good as a reference.
